As commuter cycling has grown increasingly popular in major metropolitan cities, it has borne a distinct urban cycling style. As this is not cycling for recreation, but for transportation, the look is one that needs to transition easily from sport into workplace attire… albeit casual.

Europeans have been using bicycles as a form of transportation for a long time now and the cycling tradition is rich in history. The design of the bicycles and apparel we see on US city streets is inspired by cities like London, Amsterdam and Paris, but with its own uniquely American style. It is rugged but refined, elegant but tough.

Urban commuter bikes and their riders are built to take the beating of city streets but this breed handles it with style. Ones bike is a fashion statement and there are so many beautiful ones on the market, in addition to accessories likes helmets, shoes, saddles and and even bells. April is here and with it a new STYLE OF SPORT Calendar! Instead of featuring just a single topic as we have been doing (i.e. bikes, sneakers or sunglasses), we are putting it all together with a mix of our favorite sporty things. Everyday there is a hot new must have, must do, must try piece of gear, apparel, workout, sport and more being featured for you to check out.

APR.30: RIME. Located in Brooklyn and now on the upper east side of Manhattan, is the very mod sneaker store RIME. A sneakerhead’s dream, the shop carries only the most coveted and limited editions of Nike, Adidas, Puma, Supra, Vans and more, in addition to other accessories and apparel. Love the wedge sneaker? They stock virtually every one!

A Bicycle Built for One: The “Fixie”

The main selling point when buying a bike used to be how many speeds it had. The hottest ride on the street these days is the “fixie”, or the “fixed gear” bicycle, which means one speed only. The pedals are directly tied to the movement of the wheels… you pedal forward, the bike goes forward… you pedal backward, the bike goes backwards. The bicycle and rider are one. There is an appeal in this fundamental simplicity and beautiful design is the result. With so few moving parts, the pared down aesthetic and retro styling makes these bicycles true works of art, reminiscent of the first bicycles ever built.

The fixed gear culture has quite the obsessive following. The objects of desire are the custom builds with carefully chosen frames, handle bars, wheels and other parts, but if you’re looking to pick one up ready-to-ride, here are a few beauties I have found. CLICK CAPTION FOR SHOPPING INFO
