Now on view at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) is Get in the Game: Sports, Art, Culture. The exhibition explores the powerful influence of sport in our culture, and is the museum’s most expansive presentation dedicated to a subject with more than 200 artworks that include paintings, sculptures, photographs, design objects — together with sports gear, gaming and apparel — by some of today’s most influential artists.

The exhibition is organized around five key themes that look at the intersection of visual art, sports, and design from multiple perspectives: Mind and Body, Winning and Losing, A Fan’s Life, Breaking Records, and Rules and Field of Play. Among the more than 70 artists featured in the exhibition are Emma Amos, Ernie Barnes, Kevin Beasley, Karla Diaz, Derek Fordjour, Jeffrey Gibson, Michael Jang, Ivan Salcido, Thenjiwe Niki Nkosi, Catherine Opie, Paul Pfeiffer, Cheryl Pope, Robert Pruitt, Ben Sakoguchi, William Scott, Joan Semmel, Gary Simmons, Tabitha Soren and Hank Willis Thomas.

CLOCKWISE TOP LEFT: GABRIEL OROZCO, PING POND TABLE, 1998; MAURIZIO CATTELAN, STADIUM, 1991; HANK WILLIS THOMAS, GUERNICA, 2016; HOLLY BASS, NWBA (JORDAN) 2012; CATHERINE OPIE, DIANA, 2012; JENIFER K WOFFORD, VMD, 2024

Woven throughout Get in the Game are interactive installations and historical videos that reconsider political and cultural issues through the lens of sports, athleticism, competition, and play. Viewers will encounter artists and designers inspired by athletes advancing conversations about gender, race, and identity, as well as artworks that highlight the remarkable achievements of sports figures such as Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Colin Kaepernick, Diana Nyad, Venus Williams and Zinedine Zidane. Ski In Ski Art

American ski and snowboard brand K2 has just launched the all-new Omen Ski Collection with Berlin-based artist Julia Schimautz for the winter 2025 season. The artist’s vibrant designs embody the spirit of the Omen Ski Collection, the twin-tip freestyle ski line that offers durability, performance, and a whole lot of fun for park, pipe, and street skiing.

Schimautz is a highly regarded graphic designer known for her bold colors and playful multi-disciplinary art forms. Her graphics for the Omen Ski Collection utilize risograph printing — a technique that blends elements of screen printing and photocopying, creating distinctive blurred shapes through intentional misalignments. Combining vintage aesthetics with the imperfections of printing processes, the result are one-of-a-kind vibrant graphics and a whole new look in ski design. Read More

Nike: Form Follows Motion

Now on view at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany is Nike: Form Follows Motion, the first ever comprehensive museum exhibition about Nike. The show explores the company’s five-decade ascent from a grassroots start-up to a global phenomenon, with a focus on Nike’s design history: from the company’s beginnings in the 1960s and the design of its famous swoosh logo; to iconic products such as Air Max and Flyknit; and current research devoted to future materials and sustainability. The exhibition highlights how sport is a catalyst for both design innovation and social change, and also sheds light on the almost mythical devotion to sneakers and sportswear in popular culture.

Named after the Greek goddess of victory, Nike has become more than just a brand. It is a whole design culture. Products have been developed with a blend of scientific study, sports research, and aesthetic sensibility — from material engineering to biology to body mechanics. Athletes have played a uniquely influential role by bringing their own experiences and requirements into product development. Nike: Form Follows Motion offers a look behind the scenes of this design laboratory for the first time. Read More

Surfer Magazine Returns

Almost five years since the magazine ceased print publication, SURFER is back on newsstands. The timing of the relaunch rides the proverbial wave of post-Olympics buzz where the sport garnered unprecedented worldwide attention. The surfer considered the greatest of all time, Kelly Slater, graces the magazine’s cover.

At the helm of the publication is new editor-in-chief Jake Howard. Howard has been a fixture in the surf publishing world for more than 25 years, and brings a wide array of experiences to the role, including previously serving as managing editor for SURFER. “To have a seat at the editor’s desk of SURFER, it’s a dream. In 1960, John Severson published the first issue of SURFER, and to be able to carry on that tradition and legacy, it’s a tremendous honor”.

Adding about the cover, “As we were trying to figure out the best way to celebrate the resurgence of SURFER, who better to land on the front of the book than the GOAT himself? For over 30 years he’s taken us on an unimaginable ride. From his world titles, to innovations in surfboard design and wave pools, to his unflinching commitment to the environment and making the world a better place, it just feels right to have Kelly on the cover of this issue.” Read More

Paris Reimagined

Corinne Vionnet, From the series “Paris Paris Paris”, Eiffel, 2022

As the Olympics continue in the most iconic venues around Paris, Corinne Vionnet has just completed the latest series in her ongoing Photo Opportunities focusing on re-imagined images of Paris. An online exhibition of the work can be viewed August 5- September 6, 2024 at Danziger Gallery

Beginning in 2004, before many other contemporary artists began layering jpegs pulled from the internet, what struck and interested Vionnet was that when tourists went to a popular travel destination they often tried to recreate picture they had already seen, one in the collective imagination, rather than seeing it freshly through their own eyes. “Pickleball” Elbow? New Sport… New Injuries

The Association of Pickleball Professionals (APP) recently unveiled updated pickleball participation research that revealed 48.3 million adult Americans – nearly 19% of the total adult population – have played pickleball at least once in the past 12 months. But with its surging popularity have come a rise in injuries related to the game. While many believe that pickleball is less strenuous and easier on the body than tennis, given the small size of the court, there are a number of contributing factors.

Dr. Donald Rose M.D., an orthopedic surgeon in New York City says the onset of pickleball has led to many different types of injuries. A lot of his patients are former tennis players, who feel they can’t play tennis anymore, and want an alternative. “Whereas they may have played an hour of tennis, they feel they can play multiple hours of pickleball because they don’t have to cover as much ground. They go out thinking it’s just a simple game.”

Although the average age of players is 34.8 years old, revealed in that same APP study, patients Dr. Rose sees are generally 50 and over, who he says perhaps are not as conditioned as they were or should be. The other problem, he says, is pickleball is played on hard courts. Resulting injuries are due to chronic repetitive overuse like stress fractures, hip bursitis, planter fasciitis, achilles tendinitis, as well as ankle and knee strain.

ON CLOUDBOOM STRIKE LS

When Hellen Obiri, the Kenyan distance runner and two-time 5000m Olympic silver medalist, takes her place on the starting line of the Olympic marathon in Paris next month, it will be the global debut of the On Cloudboom Strike LS, the most technically advanced running shoe ever made. Though Obiri won the Boston marathon in a custom model of the shoe this year, this will be the first time the shoe is commercially available.

According to The New York Times, the first time Obiri saw the shoes she said, “No, I can’t run with these.” The shoes had no laces. They had no heel cap — a hard plate at the back kept the foot in place. They were made of a weird, stretchy, plastic-y material.

The Cloudboom Strike LS is manufactured using a single 1.5km long filament that is spun by a robotic arm onto a high-performance racing midsole to create an ultra-thin, mesh-like upper. Forming the complete shoe upper in a single step means no glues or seams. Elastic and fully moldable to every foot, means no need for laces. Like a second skin, the Cloudboom Strike LS offers a precision fit. Read More

Why Fake Sugar is Fat Sugar

A few months ago, we featured a nutritional reset program created by Robin Barrie Kaiden. More than a quick fix, it was about establishing lifelong healthy habits to lose weight and keep it off. Taking part in the program myself, Kaiden pointed out the number of seemingly healthy shakes, protein bars, and powdered latte mixes I was consuming daily, made with monk fruit sweetener. She said they were sabotaging my fat burning efforts.

As the editor of STYLE of SPORT, I’m quite knowledgeable about nutrition, or so I thought. How could this zero calorie, natural sweetener made from plants possibly be making me fat? I didn’t want to believe her until I finally got rid of all the monk fruit sweetened products in the kitchen and saw my lean body start to return.

The percentage of the population who are obese and the incidence of diabetes has increased over the past few years, primarily due to eating habits and physical inactivity. The irony is this has also coincided with an increase in the use of artificial sweeteners. The belief has been it is better to use these non-caloric alternatives than sugar, especially the new “natural” sweeteners like stevia and monk fruit, for weight loss. Read More

Soul Survivor

Trammell Logan is a SoulCycle instructor. He’s one of the most popular SoulCycle instructors. He’s one of my favorite SoulCycle instructors. Young, fit, and healthy, Trammell almost died in the back seat of an Uber 6 years ago. He suffered a pulmonary embolism that should have killed him. Rushed to the hospital and taken into surgery, they discovered massive blood clots in his lungs and heart. When he woke up the next morning, the doctors said it was a miracle he survived. Trammell’s life was in fact saved that day thanks to one of his dedicated riders.

A few weeks ago on a Saturday morning I went to ride Trammell’s class. He was celebrating his 10th anniversary as a SoulCycle instructor. But it was a celebration of his life as well. Sitting in the front row was Dr. Roopa Kohli-Seth, MD, Director of the Institute For Critical Care Medicine at Mount Sinai. He acknowledged and thanked her for putting together the team that saved his life that day. Trammell joked that he didn’t really know her that well at the time, other than the fact she took his class regularly, and was always asking him to turn on the fans.

Roopa saved his life not just once but twice. Trammell suffered a stroke 2 years later.

I knew bits and pieces of all these events, but on that 10th anniversary I asked if he’d share the full story from start to finish, and how these life-altering, death-defying experiences have changed him as a man and as an instructor. Read More

Three exhibitions focus on skateboarding, and the theme of the kidney-shaped design of the swimming pool at Aalto’s Villa Mairea that influenced Southern California pool design and skateboard culture. The fourth exhibition delves into the history of Finnish rap and the significant role of Central Finland in shaping the nation’s hip-hop culture.

Aalto2 Museum Centre is a unique meeting place of architecture, design and cultural heritage in the heart of Central Finland, and fulfills Alvar Aalto’s desire to create a forum to bring together a variety of art forms. It combines two buildings designed by Aalto: the Museum of Central Finland and the Alvar Aalto Museum. Read More

The Bikeriders

Danny Lyon is highly regarded as one of the most influential documentary photographers of the last five decades. Paralleling the style of 1960s “New Journalism” made famous by writers such as Joan Didion, Hunter S. Thompson, and Tom Wolfe, Lyon is known for immersing himself in the communities of the subjects he photographs. One of those was the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Clubthe with whom he spent two years on the road. The resulting photographic series and book, The Bikeriders, is the inspiration for a new feature film of the same title opening this summer.

First published in 1968, The Bikeriders, documents the lives and journeys of the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club in photographs and interviews from 1963 to 1967. Lyon was a motorcycle rider himself, and when he went to a meeting of the Outlaws in a bar, one of them asked him to join the club. Authentic and personal, Lyon’s depiction of the outliers of society portrays a gritty but humanistic view that contrasts from the commercialized image of America at the time. Read More

The Karma of Dharma

SRI DHARMA MITTRA

Sri Dharma Mittra is 84 years young. He has been teaching yoga for over a half-century at his school in New York and around the world, sharing the pathway to radiant health and spiritual enlightenment from the wisdom accumulated from years of practice. He opened his first yoga studio in 1975, long before yoga was as ubiquitous as it is today.

Dharma Yoga is described as a modern interpretation of classical Eight-limbed Yoga. According to Yoga Sutras of Patañjali, the ancient doctrine of yoga philosophy, there is an eight step progression to an infinite state of bliss. The word Ashtanga, as in yoga, is derived from “ashta”, which means “eight”, and “anga” which means “limb”. Each limb prepares you for the next, and the “asanas” or physical poses are just one of the 8 limbs. In addition, the word Asana literally means seat, and refers to poses like Lotus you would take for the practice of meditation — very different from the “power yoga” workout we now associate with Ashtanga.

For those like myself, who thought yoga was only practiced on a mat, the outline below provides the basic foundation for my conversation with yoga master Sri Dharma Mittra. The Eight Limbs of Yoga are as follows: Read More

MARK SISSON IN HIS PELUVAS

I first met Mark Sisson in 2016 at The XPT Experience, a 3-day immersive sports performance clinic programmed with workouts and lectures on the cutting-edge training, nutrition, and recovery practices of top elite and professional athletes. XPT was founded by famed big wave surfer Laird Hamilton and his wife, former pro volleyball player Gabby Reece. One of the guest speakers that particular XPT was Mark Sisson, creator of The Primal Blueprint and a line of paleo/keto products called Primal Kitchen.

Sisson began his journey as a competitive endurance athlete, and has evolved into a world-renowned authority on optimal health, fitness, and performance. The Primal Blueprint was published in 2009 and essentially put the Paleo diet on the map. This groundbreaking primer adapted the lifestyle practices of our hunter-gatherer ancestors to a modern-day nutritional program. His blog MarksDailyApple, launched in 2006, became recognized as the primary resource for information on ancestral health, and Sisson has written several best-selling books based on the ancestral diet and lifestyle.

The “Primal” or Paleo diet is high in protein and healthy fats; low in carbohydrates; and specifically eliminates certain food groups like grains, legumes, dairy, sugar, and anything else that were not available in Paleolithic ancestral times. As a result our bodies learn to burn fat for fuel, our own supply as a bonus, instead of carbohydrates. Paleo and the similar high protein/low carb Keto diet, exploded in popularity with the health and weight loss benefits people experienced — as did Primal Kitchen, Sisson’s line of supplements and condiments that made this way of eating taste delicious. Primal Kitchen was purchased in 2019 by Heinz for approximately $200 million looking to capitalize on this trend. Read More

New Jersey to Hawaii: Surfing USA

Two new surf photography books published by Rizzoli make their debut this month, spanning the shores of the Atlantic and Pacific, from New Jersey to Hawaii: I Heard There Were No Waves in New Jersey: Surfing on the Jersey Shore 1888-1984 by Danny Dimauro and Johan Kugelberg, and Carissa Moore: Hawaii Gold: A Celebration of Surfing by Carissa Moore.

I Heard There Were No Waves in New Jersey: Surfing on the Jersey Shore pays homage to the beaches and boardwalks of the Jersey Shore, often overlooked for the warmer waters of its Hawaii and California counterparts. This visual history celebrates the unique surf culture that has thrived on the Atlantic coast of New Jersey, and its influence on the worlds of surfing, skateboarding, and beyond. Read More

Spring Skiing Montana: 3 Days in Bozeman

When I headed out to Bozeman, Montana last week for a quick 3-day ski trip, I assumed those 3 days would be spent at Big Sky. It was one of the few ski resorts out west I hadn’t skied and been at the top of my list. As the name implies, Big Sky encompasses a sprawling 5850 acres of Rocky Mountain skiing terrain, ranging from wide-open groomers to dynamic glades to challenging steeps, with more runs to ski than I’d ever jam into 3 days. Little did I know there are two other mountains to ski in the vicinity: Bridger Bowl, the community run mountain where the locals ski, and at the other end of the spectrum, the ultra-exclusive Yellowstone Club.

A few years ago a good friend of mine, Lynn Shanahan, moved out to Bozeman. We met on a press trip about 20 years ago when she was a Group President at Tommy Hilfiger and I was the Visual Editor at Self magazine. Tommy Hilfiger was sponsoring the U.S. Freestyle Ski Team at the time and had invited a handful of editors to Deer Valley, Utah to watch an Olympic lead-up competition. In the good old days of the print magazine business, our accommodations were at the world-famous Stein Erikson Lodge and the rest of the weekend followed suit in alpine luxury.

Lynn has quite the different life now, having opened up a bar and café in Gallatin Gateway, just southwest of Bozeman, called The Jump. Once a strip club, The Jump still has dancing but not on poles. She herself is a competitive ballroom dancer. With regular live music, locals and tourists alike, along with students from Montana State University in Bozeman, can be found on the dance floor nightly for some country western two-step and line dancing. They offer dance lessons too. Read More

Sunshine and Eggs

As winter starts to thaw, we put away the puffers, and peel off the layers, many of us have a spring awakening by what’s left underneath. The body is not as toned as we’d like, and there is a spring realization that it’s time for a spring cleaning. The search begins for a quick fix: a restrictive diet, cutting out a food group, intermittent fasting, a juice cleanse – something radical to lose that winter weight fast. But what if the answer was a back-to-basics approach of 3 balanced meals a day, real food, and eating more, not less?

Robin Barrie Kaiden MS, RD, CDN, CSSD, one of the nation’s leading experts in wellness, nutrition, and fitness, and frequent contributor to CBS, NBC, ABC, Parenting, and Forbes.com, among other media outlets, says of her 2-week Reset program, “It’s not a strict diet where you lose a pound only to gain three the next week. I want to teach people lifelong healthy habits to take with them going forward. The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to change your habits.”

Kaiden is a graduate of Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutritional Sciences and an Exercise Science minor. She has a Master of Science Degree from Columbia University as well. Her post graduate work was at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, studying nutrition and dietetics at the hospital level. Read More

Everyone Can Be A Ballerina

BALLET BODY(TM) BARRE

Barre3, The Bar Method, Pure Barre are just a few of the countless barre fitness studios across the country. Barre classes are very popular sculpt and tone workouts that integrate small isometric movements designed to work muscles to fatigue. Ballet Body(TM) Barre is a very different kind of barre workout.

Developed by former ballerina Roberta Senn, Ballet Body(TM) Barre follows the format of traditional barre classes ballerinas have taken for years to maintain their long and lean physiques and develop the strength required to perform at the highest level. The result is what Senn calls “the most beautiful bodies on the planet.”

Senn was discovered by Jerome Robbins on her very first audition after moving to New York City, who cast her in the original production of Fiddler on the Roof on Broadway in 1964. She left the production a year later to pursue dancing in a ballet company, and spent many years abroad with the Geneva Ballet, Israel Ballet, and Iranian National Ballet (disbanded after the Islamic revolution of 1979). Masters Swimming

MASTERS SWIMMING AT ASPHALT GREEN

Contrary to what you might think, Masters Swimming is not just for master swimmers. In fact it’s for everyone, swimmers of all levels, as I learned last week at Asphalt Green where I trained with the AGUA Masters swim team for week 3 of 52 Weeks of Fitness.

“Masters Swimming is for anyone 18 and over. At Asphalt Green we’re really trying to welcome everyone, from someone who just learned how to swim to former Olympians”, says Jim Wu Head Coach AGUA Masters. “We try to incorporate workouts that will appeal to all levels.” AGUA Masters swim team is dedicated to helping adult swimmers improve their swimming by developing better technique, fitness, and endurance through structured group instruction and training.

The last time I was on a swim team, I think I was 12 or 13. I still swim regularly but recreationally, not very far or particularly fast. I had seen the AGUA Masters team practicing at Asphalt Green where I am a member, their workout written out on the white board, and thought it looked like a fun way to increase both my distance and speed. Pumped Up Pilates

WEEK 2 OF 52 WEEKS OF FITNESS:

PILATES MEETS STRENGTH TRAINING AT VAURA PILATES, TOP; RE/GEN METHOD, BOTTOM

According to ClassPass, Pilates was the most popular workout of 2023, overtaking strength training as the number one choice of fitness enthusiasts. There are countless Pilates fitness studios across the country — many of which we have featured like SLT, SolidCore, Club Pilates, and Lagree Fitness – with classes on a Pilates reformer machine or a variation thereof. All are slightly different, but at their core is core – core strength that is.

A few new studios have popped up on the fitness landscape like Vaura Pilates and Re/Gen Method that combine the popularity and benefits of Pilates and strength training into one workout. It’s a new approach to Pilates and a new approach to strength training. Though there is an emphasis on core work, core strength alone is not the end goal. Maintaining your stability and form on the Reformer as you slide the platform and pull the straps against the resistance of the spring makes Pilates classes a total body workout. These new classes add weights into the mix for added difficulty and results.

Vaura Pilates is a new Australian import that just opened in NYC, and I took their first class opening day. Billed as an “athletic” Reformer class, Vaura mixes dumbbells, a weighted ball, and the traditional Pilates ring into moves on the Reformer. Every class is different and each teacher encorporates the equipment in their own way. My instructor, for example, integrated upper body dumbbell moves like bicep curls, triceps extensions, and shoulder presses into lower body moves like lunges and squats on the Reformer. Read More

adidas x Bumble

It’s a match! adidas Training and Bumble have unveiled a partnership to tackle gymtimidation, a barrier to training which can impact athletes at all-levels.

To better understand next-gen training attitudes, a study was commissioned by adidas on the effects of intimidation in the gym that found nearly one-in-three have avoided the gym completely as a result. The driving factors include fear of being judged, not being confident in how machinery works, uncertainty on how to push to the next level, and no one to workout with.

When looking at ways to combat these feelings, seven-in-ten say a gym partner helps overcome feelings of discomfort and intimidation, with six-in-ten likely to be more motivated, and half even going more often. Read More

Jitter-Free Jolts

Pop into almost any 7-11, CVS, or convenience store, and you’ll see the refrigerated section filled with assorted flavors of Celsius. The top-selling energy drink on Amazon, Celsius has taken over the market from brands like Red Bull, Monster, and other sugar and caffeine enhanced energy drinks that once dominated the market. While this “natural” energy drink still contains 200mg of caffeine, almost twice the amount in a cup of coffee, the boost in Celsius comes from the alternative plant-based ingredients like Guarana and Green Tea, which offer other health and fitness benefits as well. Plus Celsius contains no added sugar.

In addition to Celsius, there are other naturally caffeinated, low or no sugar energy drinks on the market, promoting sustained energy and mental focus without the caffeine jitters. Accelerator Active Energy, endorsed by football and Swifty fan favorite Travis Kelce, also gets its caffeine boost from Guarana and Green tea, along with Yerba Mate, a thermogenic blend said to boost metabolism and burn more calories.

“Many energy boosting, focus-inducing beverages on the market today do contain the same amount of caffeine that you would find in a cup of coffee,  but the addition of ingredients that calm the nervous system reduce the ‘jitters’ associated with caffeine, and therefore can make the user feel more focused”

-Sarah Herrington, MS, CNC, CPT

Other energy drinks have added adaptogenic and nootropic ingredients like Ashwagandha, Gaba, and L-Theanine, known for their cognitive and relaxation enhancing benefits.  Adaptogens support the body’s response to stress, including the stimulation from caffeine, while nootropics elevate cognitive function such as memory, focus, and mental clarity. Drinks like BioLift, Kin Spritz, and MTE have been formulated and are marketed to promote those benefits. Read More

52 Weeks of Fitness! Tennis Everyone?

Welcome to Week 1 of 52 Weeks of Fitness! That’s 52 different health and fitness activities in the year to come. We’re kicking it off with tennis. The first major of the year, the Australian Open, starts next week and I’m tuning up my game…

While everyone has been talking about Pickleball, tennis is alive and well, and you’re never too old to learn. Group adult instruction programs and classes like Drill & Play and Cardio Tennis are offered for all levels at almost any tennis club, at many of which you don’t need to be a member to join a class.
