The Five Minute Journal

Journaling is a simple and easy way to help improve mental health and overall wellness. The act of writing down issues we’re facing, problems we’re having, and goals we want to achieve, helps us process thoughts and understand our feelings. When we’re stressed, it feels like everything’s out of control, but journaling is a tool that can put things into perspective. The externalization lets us view those issues in an objective way and make the overwhelming seem manageable. Journaling can make you feel more positive and optimistic in as little as 5 minutes a day.

“Boosting your mental wellbeing can be as simple as taking a moment to reflect on your daily wins, big or small”, says Jasmine Eskenzi, Founder and CEO of The Zensory, an app designed to improve focus, creativity, relaxation, and positivity. “At the end of each day, intentionally jot down two or three positive moments — whether in a journal, on a sticky note, or even by saying them out loud. These victories might include achieving important goals or just savoring a pleasant lunch. The idea is to find happiness in the little things, acknowledging your worth, and appreciating the effort you put in.” Read More

The Hydration Situation

It’s very easy to become dehydrated, even if you are drinking the traditionally prescribed 8 glasses of water a day. A common belief is that you only need to replace electrolytes — minerals like magnesium, potassium, and sodium — after an intense and sweaty workout. To many people, the term hydration refers to water, but that is not enough when it comes to hydration on a cellular level. Every cell in our body requires fluid to function properly.

In order to maintain a balance between water inside and outside the cells, the body relies on electrolytes which regulate osmotic pressure and control fluid levels in each cell. “Hydration is very different from cellular hydration”, says nutrition expert, Sarah Wragge. “We can drink 3-4 liters of water everyday, which is what I recommend, but you need to add minerals to hydrate at a cellular level.”

“We lose water all day through sweat, urination, and even breathing, and in that process we also lose essential electrolytes and minerals.” Adds Sarah, “Our habits are very dehydrating. Things like coffee, sugar, alcohol, and all the fun foods we love are very depleting. Not to mention our food is no longer mineral rich because of modern farming processes and pesticides. We need to hydrate to replenish not just water, but minerals too.” Sarah has just introduced her own mineral replenishing supplement, Restore.

E-biking around town, cycling to work, or out on a road ride… everyone knows the importance of wearing a helmet, but your eyes also need protection from the elements like sun, dirt, wind, and rain. Shields and wraparound sunglasses are the best option, because they fit close to the eyes and give the best peripheral vision too — particularly important at the higher speeds of an ebike.

Whether you opt for sport or fashion sunglasses for cycling, there are a few things to consider when it comes to fit and performance:

♦ Make sure the lenses offer 100% UVA/UVB protection. A nice option are photochromic lenses that adjust with changing light conditions. Most performance sunglasses come with clear or lighter lens option to tailor your eye protection to activities and conditions.

♦ Consider the material of your sunglasses. If you live in cold areas, sunglasses made of plastic and nylon are vulnerable to becoming brittle. Look for durable, lightweight, and moldable materials like Grilamid, acetate, and titanium. Avoid glass lenses when cycling as not all are shatterproof should you fall.

♦ Check if you’re better suited to Asian-fit sunglasses, designed for people with lower nose bridges.

OMEGA AMBASSADORS FROM LEFT: NATHAN CHEN, OKSANA MASTERS, ALLYSON FELIX, NOAH LYLES

Four extraordinary U.S. athletes and OMEGA ambassadors took the stage at the Planet OMEGA Exhibition last Friday — Olympians Noah Lyles, Nathan Chen, and Allyson Felix, and Paralympian Oksana Masters — for an in-depth panel discussion about their careers and the Swiss brand’s legacy of timekeeping in sport. OMEGA has been the Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games since 1932, and the Official Timekeeper of the Paralympic Games since 1992. For over 90 years, the brand has been proudly recording dreams, while also developing some of the most critical timekeeping equipment that athletes rely on.

Sprinter Noah Lyles is one of the world’s most exciting young track athletes, having already won a bronze medal in the 200m event at Tokyo 2020 and three gold medals at the 2023 World Championships. “In my sport, every split second really counts. From the starting blocks, right to the finish line. The excellence that OMEGA brings is very reassuring and I know that all the athletes really appreciate the accuracy they bring to those important moments.”

Added Allyson Felix, the most decorated U.S. Olympic track athlete with 11 Olympic Games medals, including 7 gold, “I’ve been to five Olympic Games, and at every one, OMEGA has brought a consistent high level of timekeeping . Read More

Stacey Griffith: Two Turns From Cancer

This is not a piece I ever thought I would write. This is not a story I ever expected to tell. It’s an October Breast Cancer Awareness Month feature about my friend, SoulCycle Master Instructor Stacey Griffith…

I have known Stacey Griffith for over 15 years, first as a rider in her class at SoulCycle. We became great friends too, kindred spirits in our love of sports, and travel adventure buddies. Stacey and I had big plans last summer, the launch of a Love & Sports branded content vertical on Style Of Sport, featuring editorial created for the apparel brand she co-founded with her partner Michelle Smith. But those plans got put on hold in an instant when Stacey received a diagnosis of breast cancer in June.

Stacey is one of the most popular SoulCycle teachers, one of the originals from SoulCycle’s inception with a devoted following. She is one of those special fitness instructors, who combine inspiration and motivation into a fun and addictive workout. Her class is an escape, for me and countless others, where for 45 minutes you forget about the world outside and leave your problems at the door. Stacey has coached and guided her students through many of those problems, real-life tough stuff. A number of women have gone through breast cancer with her in that room. The last thing anyone would imagine is that she would be on the receiving end of this disease. Nor would she. Read More

Timex x The James Brand

Following the sold-out successes of its two previous partnerships, Timex and The James Brand have just released their latest capsule collaboration in honor of the iconic legacy and retro spirit of the TIMEX IRONMAN® watch. The TIMEX IRONMAN® x James Brand Collection sports an amped-up colorway, bringing a fun energy to everyday carry whether out for a run, hitting the trail, or heading into town.

The three-piece collection includes the dynamic TIMEX IRONMAN® performance watch in vibrant, neon hues harkening back to its mid-1980s debut. The timepiece features a durable yet lightweight electric yellow resin case, accented by bright red buttons, and paired with a #Tide™ sustainable teal fabric slip-thru strap made from upcycled, ocean-bound plastic. It is accompanied by a color coordinated ultra-lightweight Redstone Knife and retro canvas wallet, both designed by The James Brand.

Best known for absolute performance and minimalist design in the realm of daily carry, The James Brand sought to connect what’s on the wrist with what’s in the pocket through its latest collaboration with Timex. “A watch says a lot about its wearer, and we often think of timepieces as the ‘first cousin’ to our EDC (Every Day Carry) products,” said Ryan Coulter, founder of The James Brand.

The limited edition TIMEX IRONMAN® x James Brand Collection is now available exclusively at thejamesbrand.com, timex.com, and via retail partner, Huckberry while supplies last.

The E-Street Bike

EROY ARC HERO $4999

88 miles estimated range

You may have noticed beefed up ebikes around town, looking more like motorcycles than bicycles. Because they have pedals, these battery powered electric motorbikes are considered e-bikes and not motorcycles, and can be powered with either pedal assist or the hand throttle. These new e-motorbikes offer a whole lot of style with added power and stability, but how do you know what to look for if you’re in the market to purchase one?

For some basic info, there are 3 classes of ebikes:

Class 1: Provides assistance only when you pedal up to 20 mph (the max speed allowed in bike lanes)
Class 2: Equipped with a throttle in addition to pedal assistance up to 20 mph.
Class 3: Provides assistance only when you pedal up to 28 mph

We spoke to LAST MILE NY which sells a selection of e-motorbikes — along with other ebikes, scooters, and electric skateboards — who provided a few other things to consider:

Miles on a single charge… or the estimated range is most important thing, not necessarily top speed. As an FYI, the max speed allowed for an ebike is 28 mph, although the limit is 20mph if you’re riding in the bike lane.

After market support… the reason Last Mile carries the brands they do is that it’s really easy to get parts from them and service the bikes. It’s really important to make sure you have components that are up to date and can be replaced if need be. Read More

Like Pickleball? Try Padel

PADEL HAUS

It’s hard to miss the pickleball craze that has swept the country in the last few years. Nearly everywhere you look, courts have popped up in parks, schoolyards, driveways, and other open spaces. CityPickle took over Wollman Rink in New York City’s Central Park this summer with 14 courts.

But a few weeks ago I was strolling along the waterfront in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and I saw four packed padel courts in Domino Park at a place called Padel Haus. While pickleball may be the fastest growing sport in America with over 36 million participants (Association of Pickleball Professionals), padel is actually the fastest growing sport in the world with over 25 million players (International Federation of Padel).

Padel is like a hybrid of tennis and squash. The sport originated in 1969 in Acapulco, Mexico. Like pickleball, it is played with a paddle, but one that is thicker, perforated, and with a slightly different shape. Unlike pickleball, the ball is not plastic, but a tennis ball. The court is bigger, roughly half the size of a tennis court, and enclosed with glass walls. What makes the sport really fun is you can play the ball off the back wall, adding a new and challenging element to the game. Like pickleball, padel is quick and easy to learn, making it as fun and addictive of a sport to play. Read More

On Court With Jen Brady

Photos by Ben Solomon

Jennifer Brady, one of the most promising American players and 2021 Australian Open finalist, is returning to action at the US open this week, after injuries kept her sidelined for the last couple of years. Within months of reaching a career-high ranking of No. 13, Brady incurred a stress fracture in her knee which needed surgery. Previously planning for a comeback earlier this year, Brady’s plans were thwarted by a foot injury.

Ahead of her long-awaited comeback, Brady appeared at a special on-court event at Court16 FiDi last week, where she put a select group of the media (myself included) through drills, shared tips, and let us experience her famed big forehand. She also hit with the young tennis campers — next gen tennis stars. The 28-year-old American plays with a Babolat Pure Aero, which we also not only got to hit with, but take home too! Read More

Keeping Pace with Kara Goucher

American long-distance runner, Olympian Kara Goucher is used to running 135 miles a week, but these days it’s about 20 miles, and that’s in a good week. A few years ago, after multiple falls — one of them into oncoming traffic — and a loss of sensation in her left foot, Kara was diagnosed with Repetitive Movement Dystonia, a neurological movement disorder.

ALTRA, Kara’s shoe sponsor, has just released the ALTRA Paradigm 7 in a special colorway, along with a $50,000 donation to Dystonia research. $5 from every pair sold of Kara’s signature “Hope” color edition will benefit the Bachmann-Strauss Fellowship in Dystonia Research, a part of The Michael J. Fox Foundation whose mission is to grow the global base of researchers studying the movement disorder dystonia and symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

“I think when I see someone wearing the colorway I’ll probably freak out a little bit” said Kara. “It will be pretty cool to know someone cared enough to buy that color way and their money is going to go to help other people.”

Unafraid of a challenge, Kara is also the author of the recently published book, The Longest Race: Inside the Secret World of Abuse, Doping, and Deception on Nike’s Elite Running Team. Kara was the star witness who brought down Alberto Salazar, the now-disgraced Nike running coach who was the head of an elite team known as the Nike Oregon Project. What seemed like the opportunity of a lifetime, Kara revealed became for her and other female athletes, a culture of misogynistic abuse, and one that pushed the limits of anti-doping rules. Good Sugar

There is a new juice bar in town. It’s really more a plant-based café with salads, soups, and baked goods also offered. It’s impossible to miss with its lemon-yellow signage, screaming graphics, and the name goodsugar. Sugar has gotten such a bad rap, that even fruit, which we used to think was good for us, has become off limits. How could there possibly be such a thing as good sugar?

goodsugar founder Marcus Antebi is on a mission, and it’s a loud mission, to change that perception. Walk in and you’ll see. But the mission is much bigger than just sugar. Antebi also happens to be the founder of Juice Press, and goodsugar is the next stage in the evolution of the juice bar and Antebi himself.

The mission statement reads “to create a vibrant and sustainable society that embodies our values… a world where citizens embrace diversity and express their individuality through vibrant colors… building a better world together.” Lofty goals for a juice bar, but seemingly easy for Antebi who pours this ethos into every glass of juice he sells, as you will experience in our conversation below. Well-Suited: Nike x Martine Rose

When the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) arrived for their first match of the FIFA Womens World Cup , their choice of travel attire marked a significant fashion moment for women’s sports. Instead of the usual sweats and hoodies, the team donned the Nike x Martine Rose player’s suit, jacket, shirt, and Shox Mule MR 4 shoes.

These custom crested Nike x Martine Rose suits set a new precedent, symbolizing not only style but also camaraderie, equality, and positive change both on and off the pitch. The Nike x Martine Rose Collection dissolves the boundaries of men and women’s soccer styling with gender-free tailoring that advances the culture of sport for the next generation.

Said Megan Rapinoe, a four-time USWNT player and muse for the Nike x Martine Rose Collection: “Wearing this suit to walk out on the field feels like the culmination of my whole career – to elevate the women’s team look, to show something unexpected, and to continue to push boundaries in what it means to be an elite female athlete. It’s also just fun to be able to show up rocking something that’s unique and popping. And to have one of the best designers in the world create for the best team in the world is incredible.” Read More

Shaping Surf History

FROM TOP: TOM CURREN, 1981; AL MERRICK AND STUDENTS, 1980; AL MERRICK WITH ONE OF HIS INNOVATIVE TWIN FIN SHAPES

Shaping Surf History: Tom Curren and Al Merrick, California 1980-1983, a new surf book from Rizzoli, documents a brief but influential period in surf history in Santa Barbara, California. It was an era that saw an extraordinary mix of innovation, individuals, and epic surf conditions on the back of a record-breaking El Nino — beautifully captured by author and photographer, Jimmy Metyko, in a visual encapsulation of one of the most fertile periods in the sport.

With dramatic action shots and personal vignettes, Metyko follows the rise of young legend-to-be and future three-time world champion Tom Curren, whose preternatural wave-riding abilities would help establish California at the forefront of contemporary surfing. He puts us on the waves with a remarkable view and insider’s perspective of the sport’s evolution embodied by this young surfer, whose singular style was enhanced by revolutionary board shaper Al Merrick of Channel Island Surfboards.

We recently chatted with Metyko about this era in surf history, his own evolution from surfer to photographer, and the compilation of work in his first book… Read More

Seiko 5 Sports celebrates its 55th anniversary with a Limited Edition re-creation of the first Seiko 5 Sports watch from 1968, in addition to three other watches that pay homage to the designs and colors of the 1969 collection.

Teen Race of Hope

TOP (AND BOTTOM RIGHT): HAYDEN LUCAS LEADS THE WAY IN THE HOPE FOR DEPRESSION RESEARCH INAUGURAL TEEN RACE OF HOPE 5K

It was a sea of yellow t-shirts on Sunday, May 21st when more than 275 teenagers, their families, friends, and teachers flooded Pier 40 for Hope for Depression Research Foundation’s (HDRF) inaugural Teen Race of Hope 5K to defeat depression. On a perfect spring day, with beautiful views of Manhattan as a backdrop, participants set off on a 3.1-mile course along the Hudson River, unified in HDRF’s signature color t-shirts and hats.

The race was conceived by 17-year old Hayden Lucas in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month with the goal to bring attention to the youth mental health crisis in the US. and fight the stigma that still surrounds mental health and treatment. The event marked HDRF’s first Race of Hope in New York City, and the first one to be youth focused. HDRF also holds an annual Race of Hope in Palm Beach, FL. and Southampton, NY.

Lucas, a junior at Dwight High School, served as the leader of the newly formed HDRF Teen Task Force. Joined by 16 student ambassadors, Lucas was the Chief Student Ambassador for the Race. “When I came to the Hope for Depression Research Foundation with the idea of a teen race, they were all in, supporting me from the beginning”, Lucas told STYLE of SPORT. “Thanks to them we are able to run here today to spread awareness and work towards ending the stigma about Mental Health.” Read More

Spring Cleaning for Body & Soul

“Spring cleaning” is the annual ritual of a thorough house cleaning as the seasons change. The practice dates back to a time when homes were heated by burning wood and coal, and a spring cleaning was necessary by winter’s end to get rid of the soot and dirt left behind. The tradition has continued, and is a perfect seasonal ritual for body and mind as well.

When most people think of a cleanse, an extreme deprivation or fasting program comes to mind. But a cleanse can be just as effective, and much more doable, by simply eating the right foods. Silke Tsitiridis has created a 3-5 day bySILKE cleanse and wellness program based on the science of “mimic fasting”.

“I don’t believe in dieting and never have”, says Silke. “You should be able to eat, process, and enjoy every kind of food. But I do believe in seasonal resets where we give the body a break so it can function at its optimal capacity. Change of seasons are a great time to really stop and pause. It’s a reset for the body and mind.” Read More

Leave No Trace: Sheer Sun Protection

THE CLEAREST & SHEEREST MINERAL-BASED SUNSCREENS

When it comes to choosing sunscreen there are essentially two choices: mineral-based and chemical. By the names of the categories you can guess which one is better for your skin and the environment.

Mineral – aka natural sunscreens – are made with naturally occurring ingredients like zinc and titanium dioxides, recognized as “safe and effective” by the FDA. They sit on top of the skin like a protective barrier, as opposed to chemical sunscreens which are absorbed into skin. Chemical sunscreens often contain active ingredients shown to be toxic to the body and environment, and damaging to marine life and the coral reefs as well.

The zinc oxide and titanium dioxide in mineral sunscreens provide broad spectrum sun protection from both UVA and UVB rays, but the problem has traditionally been the chalky white residue they leave on the skin. This summer’s new class of mineral sunscreens rub in fast and clear, with the addition of skin hydrating, nourishing, and anti-aging plant based oils and natural ingredients.

Running, surfing, cycling, swimming… your favorite outdoor sports require the strongest, waterproof and sweat-proof protection. From drugstore to sport to boutique brands, these are 15 are our favorite mineral based sunscreens:

The Mosquito Bowl

On Christmas Eve 1944, two all-star football teams took the field to play the game of their lives. They were former collegiate players, record breaking All-Americans, and team captains from schools like Cornell, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, and Brown who represented one of the greatest pools of football talent ever assembled. They should still have been playing at these universities, but instead here they were in the middle of the Pacific ocean, on an island called Guadalcanal. Now U.S. Marines, they were training for what would be the bloodiest battle of WWII, the battle of Okinawa. That football game became known as “The Mosquito Bowl”.

“It was over a few beers that former collegiate football players in the 29th Regiment of the 6th Marine Division stood toe-to-toe with former collegiate football players of the 4th Regiment and made the emphatic claim that the 29th would kick the 4th’s ass if there was ever a football game between the two”, writes Buzz Bissinger in his newest book The Mosquito Bowl, “which of course was preposterous in a place like Guadalcanal with a war going on.”

When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, college football was at the height of its popularity. As the nation geared up for total war, one branch of the service dominated the aspirations of college football stars: the United States Marine Corps. “If you merged the players from the 29th and the 4th into one team, it would not only have posed a challenge to any National Football League franchise, with proper training it most likely would have beaten most of them, as the aggregate included sixteen players who had already been drafted by pro football or would receive offers.” Read More

Turn Up The Heat On Your Workouts!

CLOCKWISE TOP LEFT: TRUFUSION, HOTWORX, WHITFIT NYC,
MELT HOUSE OF FITNESS (2)

Hot Pilates, Hot HIIT, Hot Barre… While hot yoga has been popular for quite some time, other hot workouts have popped up on the fitness landscape. Many hot yoga studios have added these new classes to their schedules, finding that those who enjoy yoga in a heated room like other hot workouts as well. New state-of-the-art, infrared heated studios have also opened specifically designed for all kinds of hot classes.

Hot studio temperatures range from 90 to 108 degrees, with varying levels of humidity depending on whether they are heated with blown HVAC air or infrared heat. Among the benefits of the heat are increased flexibility, greater exertion, and higher calorie burn. Because of how much you sweat, hot classes are detoxifying for the body, and can help promote relaxation and reduce stress.

But these same benefits can also be dangerous if one is not careful. Some of the risks of hot workouts, according to Maria Restrepo, CPT at FitDominium, are dehydration and overexertion that can cause dizziness, nausea, headache, and, in severe cases, heatstroke. It is critical to stay hydrated before, during, and after a hot fitness class. Participants need to be cautious and listen to their bodies, stopping or modifying exercises as needed. Read More

I’ll Have a Myers Cocktail

It’s a drip not a drink.

Although it sounds like something you might order by the pool on vacation, a Myers Cocktail is an IV drip of vitamins and minerals. Intravenous vitamin drips, or IV Drips, have become one of the most popular wellness therapeutics, but the Myers Cocktail has been around since the 1960’s. It is the original IV drip and still the cocktail of choice because of its numerous health benefits.

The Myers Cocktail is named after the late Dr. John Myers, MD, аn іntеrnіѕt from Jоhnѕ Hорkіnѕ Hospital in Bаltіmоrе, who first introduced vitamin and mineral IV therapy for chronic medical conditions such as asthma, fibromyalgia, fatigue, and migraines. His theory was that because only a percentage оf thе vitamins аnd mіnеrаlѕ we ingest, either іn fооd or supplements, are аbѕоrbеd by the body, an intravenous іnfuѕіоn directly into the bloodstream would allow for faster and better absorption.

The classic Myers Cocktail IV drip is a megadose blend of Vitamin C, B-Complex, B12, and minerals that include magnesium and calcium. Some IV drip bars and wellness studios add other minerals like Zinc and Glutathione. Although these vіtаmіnѕ аnd minerals hаd previously been аvаіlаblе іn іntrаvеnоuѕ fоrm, he was the first to combine thеm together. This potent cocktail is known to increase energy levels, boost the immune system, reduce stress, improve cardiovascular function, speed up metabolism, and rehydrate the body. It’s great for post-workout recovery – and can help get rid of a hangover. Its revitalizing properties support the body’s natural alcohol detox process, aiding in the elimination of toxins and promoting overall well-being. Read More

What to Eat at the Vending Machine

It’s late at night or you’re stuck someplace… in a waiting room, at the office, in between classes. You’re hungry, a bit peckish, or maybe just bored. There’s a vending machine down the hall. It’s filled with chips, candy, cookies, and other snacks. You’d like to at least try to be healthy and are wondering what to have. Popcorn? Trail Mix? Pretzels?

The good news is most vending machines have much healthier snacks than they used to. You can generally find Skinny Pop, Sun Chips, Kindbars, and other more nutritional offerings. We asked our go-to nutrition expert Sarah Wragge what are the smart food choices when the vending machine is the only option. Here’s our guide to what to eat and what not to eat before you make your selection.

GOOD CHOICES

Sarah’s overall rule of thumb is: “If you are peckish or bored, push through. There is a time to feast, and a time to famine! Keep those insulin levels low and power through until your next meal to tap into your body’s fat stores.” BUT… if you are really hungry, and the vending machine is all there is: Read More

Eddie Would Go

PHOTOGRAPHS BY ANNE MENKE

The surf expression “Eddie Would Go” references the legend of Hawaiian surfer, lifeguard, and waterman Eddie Aikau, who in the 1970’s was considered one of the greatest big wave riders in the world. Eddie was the first official lifeguard at Waimea Bay on Oahu’s North Shore, famous for its massive surf, and he was known for fearless rescues in treacherous conditions that no one else would dare.

Eddie’s life took on mythic proportions when it was tragically cut short during the 1978 “Hokule’a” 2500-mile sea voyage, retracing the ancient route of the Polynesian migration from the Tahitian islands to Hawaiian islands in a traditional double hulled canoe. When the Hokule’a capsized in stormy weather, Eddie set out on his surfboard to get help. Though the crew was later rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard, despite great search efforts Eddie was never seen again. He was just 31. Read More

The Hotel Evo-Lution

AUTOCAMP, TOP; EVO HOTEL BOTTOM

Last November, on a press trip to Salt Lake City with sport eyewear brand 100%, accommodations were provided at the Evo Hotel. I had Googled the hotel prior to arrival, and was intrigued to discover it was connected to Evo.com, one of the biggest outdoor sports online retailers.

The hotel was located in The Granary District, one of Salt Lake City’s oldest industrial areas, which has recently undergone a resurgence to become a hip new section of town. There was a bouldering gym and skate park in the hotel, right off the reception area, as well as a spacious physical Evo store with a curated selection of ski, snowboard, climbing, and other outdoor sports gear and apparel — along with a large rental and demo section.

We did a story a few months ago about Auto Camp, a new hotel company redefining outdoor lodging by bringing uniquely modern accommodations like Airstream suites and luxury tents to some of America’s most scenic destinations: Yosemite National Park, Joshua Tree National Park, and Moab, Utah, among others. This new genre of boutique hotels caters specifically to outdoor sports enthusiasts — people of all ages and demographics — connected by their shared passion. Other properties like Gravity Haus in Colorado and Loge Camps on the West Coast reflect this growing trend. Read More

Trick or Treat – Part 2

Last October we did a story on Halloween candy and seemingly healthier alternatives to Trick or Treat favorites like peanut butter cups, Snickers, m&m’s, and gummy bears. After consulting with our resident nutritionist Sarah Wragge, we discovered many of the lower calorie, less sugar, and even “healthy” brands had so many fillers, fake sweeteners, and inflammatory ingredients you were better off having the real thing. A Snickers as compared to a Quest Bar was the perfect example.

A few weeks later I happened to be standing in line at CVS in the aisle with all the crackers, chips, and cookies. The Pepperidge Farm Milanos caught my eye. I LOVE Milano cookies, but would never buy them assuming they were high calorie, fat and sugar filled. Out of curiosity I picked up the bag and looked at the nutrition label. To my surprise, 1 serving of 2 cookies had 120 calories, 7 grams of sugar, and 7 grams of fat. Not that bad I thought! Sure there were a few ingredients that weren’t super healthy, but as an occasional splurge it wasn’t such a big deal.

“It’s not the calories that are of concern”, says Sarah, “but how those substitute ingredients affect the body.

Then I looked at the Lays potato chips. The ingredients were potatoes and vegetable oil. 1 serving of 15 chips had 160 calories, 10 grams of fat, and 15 grams of carbohydrates – again, not the worst thing, especially when I compared them to the supposedly healthier Baked Lays on the shelf. Yes, those had fewer calories per serving and less fat, BUT they were higher in carbs with long list of ingredients, additives, and SUGAR. I knew there was no way these Baked Lays were better for me than the regular potato chips. Read More

What I love about it is that it’s really strength focused – very important for us women of a certain age to keep our bones strong – and I’ve written about how strong the women in particular are in this class: In The Aarmy.
