Need for Speed

For decades, the Bonneville Salt Flats has welcomed various extraordinary automobile events, among which is the World of Speed. Every year in September, amateur and professional racing teams settle on the salt for a week to pursue their speed record dreams. In LANDSPEED 2, photographer Julien Roubinet explores this iconic gathering and otherworldly destination, embedded in the American car and DIY culture.

About 12 miles long and 5 miles wide, the Bonneville Salt Flats are a 30,000 acre expanse of hard, white salt crust on the western edge of the Great Salt Lake basin in Utah. The seemingly endless expanse creates a surreal environment, the perfect surface and location to reach speeds nearing 500mph. Read More

In late September, Degree Deodorant launched the #TrainersforHire Campaign, an initiative for of National Disability Employment Awareness Month challenging the fitness industry to hire trainers with disabilities. The kick-off was an inclusive pop-up cycling class in New York City’s Flatiron Plaza, led by eight-time Paralympic Track & Field medalist, Blake Leeper. The class included people with and without disabilities, on both spin bikes and hand cycles, to showcase how simple it is to create an inclusive fitness class.

As a participant, I can attest to the inspiration of a spin class taught by an instructor with a disability – a Paralympian no less – and the fact that it was a great class regardless. Blake told me that he actually has an advantage to offer that others don’t. “I use my personal experiences of adversity and challenges, that mental toughness from being born without legs, and apply that to the class. I’ve had to push through, so push through with me.”

Blake was born with a congenital birth defect, and has worn prosthetics since he was 9 months old. He made his international Track & Field debut in 2009, and his first Paralympic Games were London 2012. Blake set his sites beyond the Paralympics last summer, with the goal of competing in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, but was barred from competition on the grounds that his blade-like prostheses might give him an unfair advantage. The SOS Covid Report: Power Up The Vax

Back in May we did a follow up piece with Dr. Richard Firshein on our guide to the three Covid vaccines (read here). At that time, the FDA and CDC had just recommended resuming the Johnson & Johnson vaccine after a pause due to rare cases of blood clotting that occurred – in one case resulting in death. Despite vaccinations being on the decline at that time, there was a feeling of optimism as cities were reopening. It felt like things were getting back to normal just in time for summer.

Then came the Delta variant and the surge in cases among the unvaccinated. With breakthrough cases, booster shoots, and new kinds of treatments the latest topics of discussion, we wanted to check back in with Dr. Firshein for an assessment on the state of Covid and the pandemic’s evolution. Dr. Firshein is one of the leading authorities and practitioners of integrative medicine and our go-to expert for the latest medical news and information.

STYLE OF SPORT: When we last spoke, it seemed like we might be getting out of the woods with this pandemic. I’m hearing that again now. But I remember you saying about how insidious this virus is, and how it loves people who are unvaccinated because that’s where it mutates. While Covid has become the pandemic of the unvaccinated, they keep it a threat to us all. Read More

BE BRAVE: Special Olympics x Parsons

33-YEAR OLD SPECIAL OLYMPICS ATHLETE DANIEL FLETCHER IN DESIGN BY PARSONS SCHOOL OF DESIGN STUDENT WEIJING XIAO

“As designers in this over-consumption, over-production world, we are constantly thinking if what we’re doing is meaningful. What is my clothing contributing to the rest of the world? In this circumstance, I realized you can actually do something that moves people and makes people feel confident.”

— Weijing Xiao

In January of 2020, a new course was introduced into the Parsons School of Design curriculum in partnership with Special Olympics. It was initiated through a connection with Special Olympics board member and fashion model Natalia Vodianova, and offered students the opportunity to create designs for Special Olympics athletes. Taking a collaborative approach, students and athletes worked to conceptualize, design, and create figure skating uniforms. The mission was to amplify the voice of Special Olympics across the world of sport, fashion, and education, and generate new possibilities for inclusion and social justice.

Proving so successful in its first year, the course was offered again in January of 2021. For this semester, students were given the assignment to design both tennis and track & field uniforms for the athletes. Celebrated fashion photographer and Special Olympics Champion Ambassador, Nigel Barker, served as a mentor throughout the design process. Read More

Ultramarathon Man

I’ve run the NYC Marathon 3 times. 26.2 miles is a heck of a long way to run, not to mention the hundreds of miles you log training for it. At no point on any of these quests did I think to myself, ‘26.2 miles just isn’t enough… I really wish it was longer’. But in the booming sport of ultramarathons, races are 50, 100, 135 miles, and even longer. Equally as grueling as the distances are the conditions in which they are run.

Dean Karnazes is often credited with that booming popularity, and putting the sport of ultrarunning onto the map. For him, a marathon is a training run, and he usually runs one before breakfast. Karnazes completed his first ultramarathon in 1993. His first 100-miler was the famed Western States Endurance Run, a race that has become the marquis event of the sport. With just 369 spots, there are nearly 10 times the number of applicants. It’s the ultramarathon everyone wants to run, and comparable to the NYC Marathon, there is a lottery to get in. Karnazes is an 11-time 100-Mile/1 Day Silver Buckleholder in the event, which is awarded for completing the race in less than 24 hours.

In addition to other unfathomable challenges is the 135-mile Badwater Ultramarathon. It is run across Death Valley in the height of summer where temperatures have climbed as high as 130 degrees. Karnazes won it in 2004, in addition to five other top-10 finishes from 2000 to 2008. At the opposite end of extreme, he has run a marathon in the South Pole, with temperatures as low as -40 degrees. He has run across the United States from Disneyland to New York City in 75 days; 50 marathons in 50 states on 50 consecutive days; and, just this summer, 1000 miles across Australia. Read More

THE INTERNATIONAL HIGH DIVING INSTITUTE TRAINING PLATFORM; FOUNDER, ELLIE SMART AND CO-FOUNDER OWEN WEYMOUTH

Now open in Park City, Utah for the summer season is the International High Diving Institute (IHDI) with the United States’ first high diving training platform. The towering structure has been erected in partnership with the Utah Olympic Park, alongside the ramps where freestyle ski aerialists have trained since its construction for the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics.

The highest platform in Olympic diving is 10 meters, roughly the height of a 3-story building. In the sport of high diving, women compete from heights of 20 meters and the men, 27 meters! For professional high divers, IHDI Founder Ellie Smart and Co-Founder Owen Weymouth, this means diving from cliffs too.

There has never been anywhere in the US to train at those heights, but the platform has been designed as a place where novices can experience the sport as well. With nine take-off points ranging from 3 to 27 meters, IHDI offers programs for all levels that include the High Diving Experience. This 1.5 hour course teaches safety fundamentals like how to take off, control body position, and land, and lets beginners progress up to heights of 12.5 meters. Read More

Go With The Flow

STEVEN KOTLER

We all know what it feels like to be “in the zone”, that sense of effortless execution, be it on the tennis court, a ski run, or even working on a project. It’s total focus, clarity, and absorption in the task at hand, a challenge solved with ease, and seeing both the finish line and the steps to get there. We’ve all experienced this state that’s known as “flow”, and it’s more than a feeling. Neuroscientists have in fact discovered that flow is a physiological and recreatable state of consciousness in brain.

The term flow has recently been popularized by Steven Kotler, Executive Director of The Flow Research Collective. Kotler has spent decades researching and decoding the neurobiology of flow, and the connection between the brain and the body when humans are performing at their best. The Flow Research Collective is an organization whose mission is to understand the science behind human performance, and train individuals and organizations how to achieve more flow and optimize the benefits it provides.

The concept and term “flow” is not new. It has been around since the 1970’s, and was originally introduced by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, a Hungarian-American psychologist who was the first to identify and research the phenomenon. Csikszentmihalyi coined the term in his 1990 book, Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience and described flow as “a state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter; the experience is so enjoyable that people will continue to do it even at great cost, for the sheer sake of doing it”. Slim Summer Sips

With Covid restrictions lifted, summer celebrations have kicked into high gear and cocktails are flowing. But as festive as they may be, many of those tasty mixed drinks are loaded with sugar and the quickest way to sabotage any training program. Generally it’s not the alcohol that’s the problem, as clear liquors like tequila, vodka, and rum have zero grams of sugar. It’s what you mix them with. The good news is with some easy substitutions you can still have your favorite cocktails and drink them too.

Here are four quick tips for any cocktail:

1. 1 tsp. of sugar only has 16 calories and 4 grams of carbs. That’s enough to sweeten any drink. If you’re having just one, and not adding other sugary liquors, that’s not such a big deal. If you are going to indulge, or following a Keto diet, healthy sugar substitutes like stevia are a great alternative. It comes in both liquid and granular form, so you can muddle it, and even make your own simple syrup. The recipe is below.

2. Fresh fruit squeezed into your drink, citrus wedges, and other seasonal fruits added for flavor are a far better choice than sugar, syrups, or even juices.

3. Presentation is key! A chilled cocktail glass, salted rim, and beautiful garnishes like fruit wedges, cucumber slices, and mint leaves add visual appeal that make any drink taste better!

4. Drink responsibly… it’s the best way to keep calories in check! Read More

New Bikes on the Block

Move over Citibike, there’s a new bike in town. JOCO is a privately owned bike share service, and their distinctive orange bikes are popping up all over Manhattan. Unlike Citibike, the entire fleet of JOCO bicycles are electric assist, or e-bikes, and docking stations are located in parking garages, apartment buildings, and other private spaces. This micro-mobility brand is on a mission to merge sustainability and convenience, and “bring the joy back to your commute”.

JOCO was founded by two young entrepreneurs, coincidentally both named Jonny Cohen. The duo met at Columbia Business School, one with a focus on investment banking and real estate, and the other on transportation. Both living in NYC, they wanted to create a more efficient, enjoyable, and sustainable way to get around town. Together they have combined their skills to develop an alternate form of transportation.

“60% of trips in the US are under 5 miles. You don’t need a two-ton vehicle to travel such a short distance”, say the Jonnys. With carbon emissions at an all-time high, JOCO is addressing the transportation needs and environmental issues facing the city. JOCO launched on Earth Day in April with 30 docks, and by June they will be in 100 locations with 1,000 bikes across NYC. Their plan is to grow nationwide by creating a vast charging infrastructure network that will power the future of micro-mobility. Read More

Opening June 2nd at Gagosian New York is JONAS WOOD / Four Tennis Courts, four new works in the continuation of this artist’s series. In the oil and acrylic canvases on view, Wood has reworked four of his favorite drawings from a suite of twenty-four produced between 2016 and 2018, all of which depict famous international tennis tournaments.

Wood first made use of sports imagery in dynamic post-Pop portraits derived from boxing, baseball, and basketball cards. He later became interested in depicting the physical spaces associated with sports. While watching games on television, Wood developed a shorthand approach to representing courts and fields, paring complex scenes down to geometric shapes and flat, saturated colors. Each court is rendered in large scale portrait format, preserving its key characteristics, while simplifying or eliminating the players and spectators.

The courts of Abu Dhabi, London, Melbourne, and Paris this new series are all distinguished by their iconic colors and identifying signage. Wimbledon with Bball Orchid (2021) and French Open with Orchid (2021) incorporate snippets of paintings of plants and basketballs, hinting at the studio space beyond the screen. Australian Open with Red Lines (2021) and Abu Dhabi (2021) feature strategically positioned abstract elements, with bars of red and black recalling postwar Color Field painting. Read More

Free-Range, Grass-Fed: What Food Labels Really Mean

Cage-free, non-GMO, gluten-free… when it comes to grocery shopping these days there are so many labels stamped on a product it can be overwhelming. While all are there to tell you how healthy a product is, these labels can sometimes be misleading too. “Farm fresh”, “whole grain”, “all-natural” may sound good, but you need to look closer to know what’s really inside the packaging.

Even the health food store can be a minefield when shopping. Take eggs for example: there are a plethora of cage-free and free-range choices, but neither label means those chickens were not raised in a cage, and it can get quite complicated when you really get into each category of food.

The key, says our resident health and nutrition expert Sarah Wragge, is understanding the “sourcing” of all these foods. That’s how you know what to look for and what to avoid. On the basest level she has two non-negotiables:

Rule number 1 is a product must be Certified Organic. This goes for all food groups. Says Sarah, “When you buy something that is not organic, you are consuming pesticides, you’re consuming hormones, you’re consuming antibiotics.” The Certified 100% Organic stamp guarantees fruits, vegetables, and all the ingredients in a product have been grown or raised according to the USDA’s strict organic standards. For meat and poultry, that includes the provision that the animals must be raised exclusively on organic feed, have access to the outdoors, and cannot be given antimicrobial drugs or hormones. Covid Vaccine Update: What You Need to Know Now

About two months ago, just after the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine was cleared for emergency use by the FDA, we turned to Dr. Richard Firshein for a side-by-side breakdown and comparison of the three vaccines currently available in the US, including Moderna and Pfizer (read here). Dr. Firshein is one of the leading authorities and practitioners of integrative medicine, and our go-to expert for the most cutting-edge medical news and information.

At that time, there were high hopes for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. It required just one dose and could be stored at temperatures similar to any other vaccine. Unlike Pfizer and Moderna, which require two doses and subzero refrigeration, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine would be far easier to distribute and get into people’s arms… the primary goal of all three.

Fast forward six weeks to April 13th when both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended a pause in the Johnson & Johnson vaccinations after rare blood clotting occurred in six recipients causing serious illnesses, and in one case death. All six were women between the ages of 18 and 48, and all developed the illnesses within one to three weeks of vaccination.

10 days later following a thorough safety review, the FDA and CDC recommended resuming the Johnson & Johnson vaccinations, citing that the vaccine’s benefits outweighed its known and potential risks in individuals 18 years and older. Out of the roughly 7 million people in the United States who had received Johnson & Johnson shots at that time, the chance of these serious and life-threatening side effects was about one in a million. Surf Snow Skate

SANDY SHAPES SURFSKATES:

PACIFICO ~ MEDITERRANEO ~ TROPICALE

Surfskates are skateboards for surfing on the street. Designed to mimic the feel of a surfboard, they are longer, with a front truck design that allows the rider to carve, pump, and cut as they would on a wave… or on a snowboard.

Sandy Shapes Surfskates are actually made from snowboards… or those remnants of wood that didn’t quite become snowboards. This Italian manufacturer of beautiful one-of-a-kind wooden snowboards and splitboards has turned the scraps of wood that would have been discarded into an equally beautiful line of surfskates. In an effort to minimize waste, these excess pieces have been reimagined into something totally new.

Each skate deck is constructed from sheets of natural and colored ash and walnut, and interspersed with 6 layers of beechwood to obtain an optimal structure and flex for surfskating. There are three shapes: the Pacifico, inspired by classic surf cruisers; the Mediterraneo, a shorter surfskate for fast cutbacks and responsive turns; and the Tropicale, a swallowtail surfskate inspired by fish surfboards for those “old-school” riders.

So whether you like to surf, skate, or snowboard, these environmentally friendly surfskates are a fun and stylish way to experience the sensations of the ocean or snow while cruising city streets.

Get Off Your Acid!

DR. DARYL GIOFFRE

Dr. Daryl Gioffre describes health as energy, and the energy he exudes is off the charts! A celebrated chiropractor and functional nutritionist, Dr. Gioffre is the founder of the Gioffre Chiropractic Wellness Center. He is a passionate motivational speaker, most recognized from his regular appearances on Live with Kelly And Ryan, and believes peak health and longevity come down to one simple concept… Get Off Your Acid! It is his mantra and the title of his first book, Get Off Your Acid, as well the goal behind his line of “Acid-Kicking” supplements. His follow up book, Get Off Your Sugar: Burn the Fat, Crush Your Cravings, and Go From Stress Eating to Strength Eating, recently debuted and picks up where Get Off Your Acid leaves off.

The pH balance of acidity and alkalinity in our bodies has become a popular health topic in recent months, one that we have written about in numerous posts, as well. Basically, our bodies function optimally at a blood level pH balance of 7.4 on a scale of 0 to 14, where 0 is the most acidic and 14 is the most alkaline. When the scale tips too far towards acidic it creates inflammation that causes fatigue, bloating, congestion, and a host of more serious symptoms. Dr. Gioffre, like many other health and wellness experts, believes the acidity in our bodies that comes from diet, stress, and lifestyle choices is at the heart of most chronic health issues.

Our bodies are designed to maintain a healthy pH balance but numerous factors can throw it off, most obviously what we eat, like rich, processed, and sugary foods. According to Dr. Gioffre however, stress is the primary cause of acidity and inflammation. And think of what we’ve been experiencing over the last year! “Our baseline stress level is so elevated right now”, says Dr. Gioffre, “that we are essentially marinating in our stress hormone cortisol, 24-7”. A Good Night’s Sleep

About 70 million Americans suffer from chronic sleep problems. Although not always serious, left untreated, lack of sleep can cause an array of problems for daytime function, and lead to other health issues. Physiologically, when it comes to our fitness goals, not getting enough sleep can interfere with performance and even sabotage our weight loss… regardless of whether we are exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet.

Sleep has become one of the buzziest wellness topics, amplified over the past year by the inordinate amount of stress and anxiety the pandemic has caused. More than ever, people are not sleeping well. There is even a name for it, “Coronasomnia”. Here, at the start of Sleep Awareness Week we turned to our resident health and wellness expert, Sarah Wragge, for some answers and solutions to the sleep conundrum facing so many of us.

STYLE OF SPORT: I feel like I could not be talking to you at a better time as you just had a baby a few weeks ago and are the mother of a 4-year old as well!

SARAH WRAGGE: (Laughing)… You could definitely say I’m sleep deprived!

SOS: I know you’re usually on top of your sleep game, so let’s talk about this phenomenon of sleep deprivation and how it’s affecting so many of us. Read More

Power Brews

With the popularity of intermittent fasting, a nutritional tool that can help your body burn fat, that first cup of coffee is often the break-fast meal. For those who prefer training in the morning, while in a fasting state, fueling their workouts can be a challenge. Many athletes and fitness enthusiasts have conditioned their bodies to use fat for energy — as opposed to carbs which were once the norm — and have turned their morning brew into nutritional, fat-burning fuel.

Bulletproof coffee was one of the first fat-packed recipes to gain popularity: essentially black coffee with a scoop of grass-fed butter or ghee, and MCT or coconut oil. The added fat slows down caffeine absorption for more sustained energy. The theory is by adding fat to a cup of black coffee, you can transform it into an energy-boosting, brain-fueling, fat-burning meal. Grass-fed butter or ghee adds high-quality fats and essential nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids; fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K; and antioxidants. MCT Oil, which is derived from coconut oil, is said to help to increase energy levels, improve cognitive performance, regulate blood sugar, and boost fat burning. Bulletproof manufactures its own MCT oil called Brain Octane FuelRead More

Knocking Down The Fences

A.J. ANDREWS

Happy International Women’s Day! On this annual celebration of women’s achievements, A.J. Andrews is the perfect athlete to highlight as a true barrier breaking woman. This Pro softball phenom made history in 2016 as the first woman to win the prestigious Rawlings Gold Glove Award. Given to the best defenders on the field, for 59 years it had only been awarded to MLB players until A.J. snagged the trophy… similar to one her infamous diving catches

An outfielder for the National Pro Fastpitch’s Akron Racers, A.J. has always been at the forefront of her sport, known for a fearlessness that no obstacle — fences or even the broken hand she played with for an entire season — can stop. The PBS film Knocking Down The Fences, gives an inside look at what drives this remarkable athlete. In it she declares, “If you hit a ball in the outfield, and it’s anywhere in my vicinity, I’m going to make sure it ends up in my glove.”

Your SOS Guide to the 3 Covid-19 Vaccinations

Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 vaccine was just cleared for emergency use by the FDA, bringing the total to three vaccines, alongside Moderna and Pfizer BioNTech, that are now available in the US. Though the numbers might appear as if it is less effective, this Johnson & Johnson vaccine might be the one that many of us have been waiting for. Thus far we have not been given a choice between the two available vaccines and it is unclear whether that will continue to be the case with three in the mix. Dr. Anthony Fauci and the CDC all agree the best vaccine is the one available to you.

We turned to Dr. Richard Firshein of the Firshein Medical Center to guide us through the three vaccines. Dr. Firshein is one of the leading authorities and practitioners of integrative medicine, and our go-to expert for the most cutting edge medical news and information.

What are the basic differences between the three vaccines?

The three vaccines really fall into two categories: Pfizer and Moderna in one category, and Johnson & Johnson in the other. There are basic differences between the two categories. Pfizer and Moderna require 2 doses and subzero refrigeration for storage, while Johnson & Johnson requires just 1 dose and can be stored at temperatures similar to any other vaccine. Those two differences in themselves make the Johnson & Johnson vaccine far easier to distribute and get into people’s arms… the primary goal of all three. Read More

Against The Tides

BETH FRENCH

Against The Tides is the captivating story of British marathon swimmer and world record holder Beth French, and her quest to swim across the most dangerous open water crossings in the extreme challenge known as Oceans Seven. For marathon swimmers it is the ultimate test — the equivalent of climbing the Seven Summits in mountaineering — and very few people have ever completed it. Beth ups the ante with the goal to accomplish it in a single year which has never been done, even more unfathomable as she spent much of her youth in a wheelchair with a debilitating illness, unable to move.

The Oceans Seven consists of seven of the most unforgiving straits and channels around the world. There is The North Channel between Ireland and Scotland, 21 miles; The Cook Strait between New Zealand’s North and South Islands, 16 miles; The Molokai Channel between Molokai and Oahu, 27 miles; The English Channel between England and France, 21 miles; The Catalina Channel between Santa Catalina Island and Los Angeles, California, 21 miles; The Tsugaru Strait between the Japanese islands of Honshu and Hokkaido, 12 miles; and The Strait of Gibraltar between Spain and Morocco, 10 miles. Liquid Horizon

Born and raised in Kauai, surfer and photographer Daniel Fuller has spent his life in, on, and surrounded by water. He is regarded as one of surfing’s preeminent big wave riders. Fuller has become a lauded photographer as well. It is no surprise his images focus on the ocean, captured in an ethereal and mystical way. His intimate connection with the aquatic world brings a unique perspective to his photography, now published for the first time in Liquid Horizon: Meditations of the Surf and Sea. This retrospective showcases an opulent collection of abstract seascapes created from 2007-2020.

Fuller’s nocturnal images of waves and water are photographed evocatively by moonlight with slow exposures. While soulful, they exhibit a creative discipline, repeating and evolving a single idea over time. As art writer and gallerist Adam Lindemann describes in the preface, “The ocean and the shore are abstracted beyond recognition, to the point that what we see is just color; the composition is a transition from one to the other — dry land merges into the water and the image becomes a part of the liquid experience.”

Whether on a surfboard or with a camera, there are both similarities and differences in how Fuller captures a wave. We spoke to him about his process and vision, and the expression of his experience with the ocean into his art… Read More

Wave Prophecy Sorayama

Famed Japanese contemporary illustrator, Hajime Sorayama, has teamed up with Mizuno to transform its iconic WAVE PROPHECY sneaker into a work of art that is the WAVE PROPHECY SORAYAMA. Sorayama is best known for the erotic machinery of his Sexy Robot series and has added his signature highly stylized, slick and shiny layer to the futuristic evolution of this running shoe.

The most distinctive element of the WAVE PROPHECY SORAYAMA is the sole, already unique its design, which showcases the intersection of Mizuno’s technology with Sorayama’s creative vision. Sorayama wanted the sneaker to inspire “floating in the air” and the resulting design gives the impression it might actually lift off and fly.

This collaboration with Sorayama and Mizuno was not their first. The two teamed up previously on the design of prosthetic running blade called the KATANAΣ, also rendered in his shiny silver, and perhaps even more so embodying his Sexy Robots.

The WAVE PROPHECY SORAYAMA will be available for early release at 2G Tokyo and 2G Osaka on January 30, and at Dover Street Market Ginza and KITH Tokyo on February 6. The shoe is priced at ¥38,500 JPY (approximately $370 USD).

The Art of the Cleanse

Michele Gasti / Gallery Stock

Every January, after a festive month of non-stop eating and drinking, many people decide to go on a “cleanse”. It’s usually a quick fix deprivation program designed to shed those holiday pounds fast, jump start your New Year’s goals, and get you mentally back on track. No sugar, no alcohol, no carbs, no fat, no more fun. It’s short term, so people think it’s doable, and a cleanse does usually result in some initial weight loss. The problem, however, is what happens after the cleanse… or during, should you slip up.

We checked in with our resident nutrition and wellness expert, Sarah Wragge, about whether to cleanse or not to cleanse after a period of indulgence. “Most people decide to do a cleanse because they think they must do something extreme to undo what they’ve been doing,” she says. “It’s an all or nothing extremist mentality, with no room for failure, and so it’s not sustainable.”

So here you are feeling congested, bloated, and confused. The good news, says Sarah, is there are a number of things you can be doing right now to get back to your fighting form and sustain it for the long term. Cleansing doesn’t have to be extreme, and it can actually be a regular part of your daily routine. Here are some healthy ways to kick off 2021, and keep it going all year!
