A Yogi’s Journey

I belong to Pure Yoga in NYC, a popular members-only yoga studio on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. There is one on the Upper West Side as well. As I have discussed before on STYLE of SPORT, I really don’t like yoga, but force myself to go as a counterpart to all the running and spinning I do. Like any fitness class you take, it’s about finding an instructor you like, and one of the first yoga teachers I found at Pure, whose class enjoyed, was Amanda Murdock. For me, that’s saying a lot.

I first took Amanda’s class back in 2013 during my annual 31 Days of Fitness feature. I remember thinking then that she was very skinny. With a ballerina’s physique and muscle definition, my assumption was she was or had been a dancer. I didn’t presume the other explanation. It was only a couple of years ago, when I noticed her body started to change and become much healthier looking, that I wondered if she might have had an eating disorder. The Pure community is fairly tight knit, and when I asked another instructor, a friend of both of ours, she told me that had been the case.

Amanda has gone from about 90lbs. to 120lbs. since I have been a member of Pure. As a fitness instructor Amanda’s transformation has been very public. I started thinking about what it must be like to have a classroom of eyes staring at you every day — going through such a challenging and emotional journey while on display. I wanted to know her story and tell her story. Although Amanda and I were friendly, our only contact was in class, and I was very hesitant to ask her about something so personal. Read More

W.O.W! Working Out With Kelly Ripa

From daytime television to morning television, Kelly Ripa has been making her presence known on the airwaves since 1990. We first got to know her as Hayley Vaughan on ABC’s “All My Children”, before becoming the co-host of “Live with Regis and Kelly” in 2001. Now the solo host of “Live with Kelly”, Kelly Ripa has proven she’s a force to be reckoned with and not just on the small screen. Packed into a 5’3” frame, this media powerhouse is a whole lot of muscle and endless energy, all of which I’ve witnessed plenty while riding with her over the last few years at SoulCycle.

The bubbly personality we all know and love on television is balanced by a sarcastic wit that fellow riders at SoulCycle experience on a regular basis. There is no diva here; Kelly is just a fresh-faced, funny, and approachable spin mate who didn’t hesitate to say yes when I worked up the nerve to ask if she’d be on Style of Sport. Her only request was that she didn’t have to wear any makeup. ‘How cool’, I thought, ‘How real! How Alicia Keys!’ The daily application of makeup is one part of her job that she is happy to skip when not required.

The “double” seems to be a phenomenon unique to SoulCycle where riders just can’t get enough, taking not just one, but two classes in a row.

Moo-ve Over, There’s a New Milk in Town!

It used to be if you were looking for an alternative to cow’s milk, your only option was soy milk. It was the first non-dairy milk to go mainstream, popping up in grocery stores and soy lattes everywhere. Soy milk fell out of favor, however, for the digestive and allergen issues it caused some people, and rice milk became the popular alternative. Almond milk soon took its place, and has held court as the nut milk of choice for a few years.

Walk into a health food store or your local hipster coffee house these days, and you’ll find a plethora of plant-based milk alternatives, from cashew to coconut, oat to hemp, and more – each claiming to be the best alternative to the alternatives, and leaving us to wonder which one we should drinking.

Plant-based nut and grain milks vary in their macronutrient composition (protein, carbohydrate and fat), and also in the micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) they contain. Each have their pros and cons, and for many it comes down to personal preferences – taste, consistency, and dietary needs. For me, it’s which one makes my coffee the creamiest, and is the color closest to cow’s milk. The good news is on that front there are a number of options available in a barista or coffee creamer blend. Read More

3 Minutes to A Healthy Back!

If you’re an athlete, being sidelined with an injury sucks. So many of us (myself included) don’t take simple preventative measures to keep them from happening, particularly when it comes to the spine. According to Dr. Scott Duke of Duke Chiropractic, our go-to resource for all things sports medicine, 80% of the walking population will eventually have some kind of back injury. We asked Dr.Duke for a quick, no-excuses routine anybody could do to keep their back healthy and ready for action!

The 3 X 3 Back to Back routine is 3 part series of moves that takes just 3 minutes!  This is an easy everyday workout designed to mobilize, stretch, and strengthen the spine without spending a lot of time. It’s a perfect warm up before working out that preps the body for activity and keeps us doing all those crazy workouts we love. Each section below is 1 minute.

 

PART 1: MOBILITY

This is your warm up, designed to loosen up and lubricate the spine. Each exercise is 20 seconds of continuous movement at your own pace.

 

1. Cat-Cow

On all fours, flex and extend spine. Head should move in line with spine.

 

2. Pelvic Release

Lie flat on back with left foot crossed on right. Arms flat at 90 degree angle. Drop left knee out to the side while turning head to right. Switch legs and repeat.

Team USA Lifts Off

Day to Night

Now on view at Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery is “Day to Night”, the second exhibition of works on this theme by photographer Stephen Wilkes. The images represent a visual exploration of an iconic location, photographed from daybreak to nightfall, often capturing an historical event from start to finish: Easter Mass at the Vatican in 2016; the Inauguration of President Obama at the U.S. Capital in 2013; and on our Style of Sport beat, the final stage of the Tour de France in Paris in 2016.

At first glance, what is most obvious in these photographs is the light changing as time progresses from day into night. On closer inspection however, which is mandatory, what you see is everything that happened during that time span, seamlessly compressed – literally — into one image. Taken from a single fixed position, Wilkes selects from hundreds of moments captured, putting together all these slivers of time and what occurred within them, into a single image. Twin sisters, Cristen Barker and Kimmy Hise, are better known as the ChinTwins. Former fashion models, this gorgeous yogi duo has an Instagram following that has swelled to over 70,000 since we last featured them in Twin Poses. Using their powerful platform as social media influencers, the sisters have paired with Senhoa on the Clarity Collection, a jewelry line created to provide safe employment to survivors of human trafficking in Cambodia.
 
Senhoa is a non-profit organization that provides assistance, education, training and opportunities to women and girls who are at risk or have survived human trafficking and sexual exploitation in Cambodia. Each artisan individually handcrafts every piece of jewelry and 100 percent of the sales goes towards funding early intervention initiatives. Senhoa’s mission is to combat human trafficking and sexual exploitation through empowerment, advocacy, and prevention programs.

Ready, Set, Show!

 

 
Now in its fourth year, The Rolex Central Park Horse Show has taken over Wollman Rink once again, transforming New York City’s famed ice skating rink into a Grand Prix show jumping ring. Nestled at the bottom of Central Park, with the city’s skyscrapers behind it, this urban yet bucolic setting makes for a spectacular venue. The show has become a highlight of the equestrian circuit, attracting the biggest names in the sport who come to compete under the lights and under the stars in the heart of New York City.

The course itself is extremely challenging for both riders and horses, squeezing the multiple combinations of head high jumps that define a Grand Prix competition into what is a small and oddly shaped arena. But first there is the metamorphosis of an ice skating rink into a horse ring which is no easy feat. From the first load of dirt to the first horse in the ring, it is about 5 non-stop days and nights of activity – one that we thought would fun to document. The time lapse video shown above takes place over the course of week, compressing the whole process into about 90 seconds.

Eye of the Falcon

 

 
In what fans had hoped would be an exciting rematch of the 2016 NFC Championship Game, the Atlanta Falcons came out on top again Sunday night, beating the Green Bay Packers 34-23. As eagerly anticipated was the Sunday Night Football debut of the $1.5 billion Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the brand-new home of the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United FC (MLS).

The state-of-the-art Mercedes-Benz Stadium covers 2,000,000 square feet, and includes 71,000 total seats. It boasts the largest scoreboard in the world — three times as large as any in the NFL — a revolutionary 360 degree, 58 by 1100-foot LED “halo board” that circles the entire arena. There is also 100-foot mega-column LED display board.

What is most spectacular about the new stadium, however, is its 14-acre retractable roof, featuring 8 translucent petal-like panels that weigh roughly 500 tons each, and open and close like a camera lens. In front of a sellout crowd, the stadium’s groundbreaking roof opened for the first time Sunday night for the Falcons’ first open-air home game since 1991.

Surfing Andy Warhol

In 1967, Andy Warhol moved to La Jolla, California to make the movie, “San Diego Surf”, his homage and twist on the classic surf films of the late 1960’s. Surfboard shaper Tim Bessell was then just a kid, living down the street.

Fast forward to the 1980’s where Bessell was invited to New York by film producer Gary Binko and by chance met Warhol at the opening of the Playboy Club. As it turned out, Warhol and Bessell had a mutual friend, another surfboard shaper named Carl Ekstrom. Famous for his asymmetrical surfboard designs, two had been used as props in the movie. Ekstrom told Bessell if he ever ran into Warhol, tell him he said hello. Little did he realize he would have the chance to do just that!

Time For A SUPgrade

 

 

If you’ve been into Stand Up Paddleboarding for a while now — preferring the serene waters of the bay or lake over ocean waves, but still riding a traditional surfboard shaped SUP — it might be time to graduate to a race or touring board. With a nose shaped more like a kayak, called a “displacement hull”, these sleek and streamlined boards are designed to go fast and straight, cutting though choppy waters and gliding with ease.

Touring boards are generally more stable and are wider than race boards, designed for recreational paddlers, while race boards tend to be narrower, designed for more advanced and competitive paddlers. The Sunfish

 

 

There are few images more evocative of summer than that of a Sunfish sailboat lazily cruising around a lake or bay — with its cheerfully striped triangle sail, topped off with the black silhouette of its namesake fish. If you went to summer camp or grew up near a flat body of water, chances are you learned how to sail on a Sunfish or at least were along for the ride. The Sunfish has been around since 1952 and continues to be one the most popular sailboats for both beginners and experienced sailers alike.

The Sunfish is distinguished by its simplicity, which makes it one of the easiest boats on which to learn how to sail, for both kids and adults alike. Its small size and single “lateen” sail (a triangular sail mounted at an angle on the mast), with its basic two line rigging, make it an easy boat to set up and set sail. Upgrades can be added for competitive sailing, of which the Sunfish is in fact a popular class of racing.

Sailing basics, like learning how to tack and jibe and use the wind, are easy to teach on a small boat. Being so low on the water, its size makes it very responsive too. Says Susan Koehler, one of the founders and owners of The Dinghy Shop in Amityville, Long Island in New York, and one of the largest Sunfish dealers on the East Coast, “With the Sunfish you can feel the water, feel the wind, and feel the response of the boat.”

Part of the fun of being so low in the water is on a hot summer day you’re sure to get wet — be it a refreshing splash or a likely dunk, if like this editor you decide to take one out for a sail for the first time since summer camp. Yes, the Sunfish can be easy to tip as we did, but they are easy to right as well and a good laugh usually ensues. Though I was acting as first mate, after 30 plus years my skipper’s sailing basics returned quickly as we jibed, tacked and sailed our way home — with me gleefully leaning off the side of the keeling boat, laughing and smiling just as I’d done as a kid.

A Sunfish is still what summer memories are made of.

Trading Places: Michelle Wie & Genie Bouchard

When two of the biggest stars in tennis and golf, Eugenie “Genie” Bouchard and Michelle Wie respectively, met for the first time last week, you would have thought they were lifelong friends. Both Nike athletes, they had been brought together for a promotional event and quickly hit it off, literally, hitting golf and tennis balls, and exchanging coaching tips. Their rapport was instant and their ability to pick up each other’s sport didn’t lag too far behind.

Korean-American Michelle Wie, 27 years old, has been on the LPGA tour since just before her 16th birthday and is currently #34 in the Rolex Ranking. Though at age 10 she became the youngest player to qualify for a USGA amateur championship, Wie actually had dreams of becoming a professional tennis player. This phenom’s golf game was better than her tennis game, however, and so the clubs beat the racquet. Wie won her first major at the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open. Though she doesn’t get much of a chance to play tennis these days, after a few pointers from Genie, she quickly showed she’s still got some game.

Canadian Genie Bouchard, 23 years old, is currently ranked 57th in the WTA and has been a force to contend with since she hit the tour: named WTA Newcomer of the Year in 2013 and WTA Most Improved Player in 2014. She was the 2014 Wimbledon runner-up, and semi-finalist in both the Australian and French Open that same year. Though Bouchard has virtually no golf experience, she was swinging like a pro after just a few tips from Michelle.

Here Comes The Judge

Maybe you’re not a Yankee fan, or a baseball fan, or even a sports fan, but every now and then a player comes along that captures your attention regardless. Last night baseball fans across the country watched as the Yankee rookie phenom, Aaron Judge, effortlessly crushed baseball’s best hitters to win the Home Run Derby — highlight of the MLB All-Star Game festivities.

While his victory might have seemed a foregone conclusion after the season he’s had, he is just 21 years old and it was his first time at the big game. Though he led the American League in All-Star votes, Judge exceeded expectations, pummeling homer after homer, with four rockets of more than 500 ft, and put on an epic show for the fans and his fellow All-Stars alike.

Larger than life, standing a massive 6-foot-7 inches tall and 280 lbs, Aaron Judge’s humility looms just as large. It’s part of what makes his greatness so great. In his rookie season, he is leading the league in home runs with 30 thus far, having blasted one 495 ft. into the left field bleachers at Yankee Stadium a few weeks ago — the longest home run in a regulation game so far in 2017. Regardless, he was as giddy as any fan meeting their baseball heroes at the Home Run Derby last night, though many of them were there to see him.

1. The Championships, Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world.
The first Wimbledon championship took place in 1877 when only Men’s Singles were played. Ladies’ Singles and Men’s Doubles events came on the scene in 1884.

2. Wimbledon is the only major played on grass… today.
Prior to 1975, three of the four majors — the US Open, Australian Open, and Wimbledon — were all played on grass. Only the French Open was not. Wimbledon is played on the grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, and during the event, the grass is cut to a height of exactly 8mm. As the tournament progresses, the wear and tear becomes obvious as the baseline gets browner and browner. This used to appear at the T, when the game was more serve and volley, but the style of play has shifted over the years to a baseline game. There is usually no play scheduled on the middle Sunday to allow the courts to recover from Week 1 and be thoroughly watered for optimum performance in Week 2.

Competing in front of sold out stadiums and on television sets worldwide, the professional athlete has to look as good as she plays. She needs a hairstyle that will keep the hair off her face while still showing off a little personal style. Ponytails and braids, headbands and visors are just a few tricks of the trade and favorites among tennis players — and no one knows more about that than Julien Farel, namesake of the Julien Farel Restore Salon & Spa.

Every year since 2007, Julien Farel and his team of stylists open a pop-up salon for the players and their VIPs at the US Open tennis tournament. They cut and style the on and off court looks of such players as Novak Djokovic, Victoria Azarenka, and Rafael Nadal. “What I love about it”, says Lucie Ducrot, one of the salon’s top stylists, “is you get to meet all the players intimately because you cut their hair. They are always so low key and down to earth, and you create a relationship because you see them every year. The first year I cut Novak Djokovic’s hair he won! I was so proud!”

On a mission to drop 30 lbs. fast, Janey throws herself into the boutique fitness scene: sweating it out at “Soarbarre”, primal screaming at “The Workout”, and going topless at “Nipple Yoga”. Though the comparison to many popular workouts may seem obvious, Lucy Sykes swears the similarities are purely coincidental. We caught up with Sykes at an “Abs & Arms” class at FlyBarre, her go-to workout of choice, for a special Fitness Junkie class. The “Optimists”

It was very windy last Sunday afternoon on The Great South Bay in Bellport, Long Island, and out in full force were the fleet of  “Opti” sailboats, or “Optimists” as they are formally called. Optis are the most sailed single class boat. They are used to teach kids to sail and thus are also the biggest youth racing class of sailboat. While younger sailors begin in Optimists, competitive sailors usually continue to race them up to 14 or 15 years of age. Due to their inherent stability, robust construction and relatively small sails, these little boats can handle winds of up to 30 knots and so seemingly can these impressive young sailors!

A Cavernous Journey

I’ve known fashion photographer Kelly Ryerson since the beginning of this millennium, and first worked with her at Women’s Sports & Fitness magazine, where we journeyed on many an outdoor adventure. One of our most memorable was to photograph some bathing beauties in Goldbug Hot Springs, a hidden gem of a natural hot tub, bubbling along the banks of the Salmon River in the mountains of Idaho.

Hiking has always been a source of joy and solace for Kelly. As kid growing up in Austin, Texas, trekking through the woods and trails was simply the way to get to whatever watering hole she and her friends decided to cool off in that day. When faced recently with the emotional wallop and pain of a divorce, it was to hiking that Kelly returned, finding comfort in both its physicality and serenity.

Last March, Kelly embarked on an epic 5-day journey to Sơn Đoòng Cave in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, Vietnam – only just recently discovered – photographing it in these majestic images shown here. This is the story of her cavernous adventure…

Surf Shack

All’s Well in Wellington

Unless you are part of the equestrian set, Wellington, Florida might not be a familiar destination, but every winter the world’s best riders descend upon this sport mecca for the 12-week Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF). Hosted at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center, the main attraction is the show jumping and its numerous Grand Prix events — along with the perfect climate for rider and horse alike. 

Next door to Palm Beach, Wellington was originally created in 1972 as a 7000-acre equestrian preserve. The Winter Equestrian Festival has been going on since 1979, but it wasn’t until 2008 that Wellington began to evolve into the equestrian lifestyle destination it is today. In 2006, about 1000 acres that included the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center, were purchased for $135 million by Mark Bellissimo, a former tech entrepreneur, who envisioned the economic impact developing this community could have.

W.O.W! Working Out With Abby Elliott

If you are a fan of Bravo’s “Odd Mom Out”, you hate, but kind of love Abby Elliott. The character she plays, Brooke Von Weber, the entitled young wife of your stereotypical NYC hedge fund CEO, is fairly detestable, but Abby does it with such deadpan and oblivious humor, it’s hard not love her for playing it so well.

Abby is third generation comic genius and third generation “Saturday Night Live” alum. She was a cast member from 2008-2012. Her father, Chris Elliott, probably most recognizable for his regular sketches and guest appearances on “Late Night With David Letterman”, was also a cast member from 1994-1995. Her grandfather, Bob Elliott, one half of the famed comedy duo, “Bob and Ray”, made a guest appearance on the show in 1978.

Abby is currently filming the eagerly anticipated third season of “Odd Mom Out”, Bravo’s foray into scripted television. Set in Manhattan, it is a satirical peek at the outrageous lifestyles of the extremely rich wives and mothers who live on the Upper East Side. Abby’s character Brooke is most definitely the odd mom IN. She is the leader of this pack — foe of writer and creator Jill Kargman’s character, Jill, the series “odd mom out”. Both spoof the opposite ends of the spectrum at the other’s expense and the result is pure laughs.
 


 

For this installment of “W.O.W! Working Out With”, I met Abby at The Bar Method in Soho, her go-to workout of choice. While I kept waiting (and kind of hoping) for Brooke to appear, Abby is far from the character she plays. This fresh faced and unaffected cheerful young woman blended in with the crowd of regulars there for the packed morning class. With long hours on set, typical of any filming actor’s life, it’s been hard to workout lately as much as she would like, but with her first day off in while, this was her first stop. I, a HUGE fan of the show, was beyond excited to join her, although slightly dreading the torture I knew was in store.

In anticipation of Roland-Garros, aka The French Open, Lacoste has partnered with designer Yazbukey in a new LACOSTE x Yazbukey tennis collection. Yazbukey is known for creating whimsical accessories with a Pop Art inspired aesthetic, which she has integrated into this capsule collection of apparel and accessories.

The LACOSTE x Yazbukey collection humorously combines the visual world of Yazbukey with the tennis heritage of the crocodile and Lacoste brand. Says Lacoste creative director, Felipe Oliveira Baptista, “I always think it’s a good thing to take the brand to places where people don’t expect it and have its story told through a different world.”

A tennis match played by three tennis ball-shaped emoticons and a crocodile is the running theme throughout the line that features polo shirts, tees, tote bags, hats, leather goods, and more. Describes Yazbukey, “We created three characters for a tennis match – or a game of seduction – with four players: the crocodile and three tennis balls”.

I don’t ride motorcycles but if I did, I’d ride a Ducati. Italian bred, they are works of art – powerful pieces of sculptural engineering that even to those who may never straddle one, are just plain sexy.

I’ve been on some pretty awesome press trips, and would have dreamed to be invited to Seville, Spain to test the new 2017 Ducati SuperSport, recently awarded the title of  “Most Beautiful Bike” at the prestigious EICMA Motorcycle Show in Milan, Italy. Lucky for distinguished writer and long time motorcycle aficionado Jake Bright, he got to go. Thrown in with some of racing’s best, his love of motorcycle riding clicked back into gear speeding around the track and through the Spanish countryside…

This Saturday, March 4th, the Pepperdine Women’s Beach Volleyball team kicks off the 2017 season with their home opener against USC and UCLA. Yes, Beach Volleyball is a NCAA sport, and with 3 out of the top 5 ranked teams on the West Coast, these college athletes make you wish they all could be California girls. Tall, fit, and tan, with killer spikes and power blocks, these women are exactly as you picture them and then some.

Collegiate Beach Volleyball is a relatively new NCAA sport, which is why you may be surprised to hear about it. I know I was when I stumbled upon the Pepperdine Waves on Zuma Beach last fall, and couldn’t help but notice these physical specimens practicing on the court next to ours. Similar to college tennis, five teams of doubles compete for each school. The team winning 3 out of 5 matches wins the tournament. The Pepperdine Waves are ranked #4 going into the 2017 season, with USC ranked #1 and UCLA #3.

Pepperdine University is a small Christian college nestled in the hills of Malibu, California. Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, it is one of the most beautiful college campuses you’ve ever seen. The Waves home court is on world famous Zuma Beach — think “Baywatch” — to keep you California dreaming. The NCAA announced beach volleyball as an emerging sport in January 2010, and Pepperdine officially added the program for the 2012 season.

Double Vision. One Focus.

 

 

“On 4/3/15 I woke up like the picture on the left. I’d had a stroke in my sleep which caused a palsy in the 3rd nerve of my brain, causing my right eye to swing out. I saw two of everything and could only see straight if I closed one eye. It’s taken over a year and a half, 3 surgeries, an ocean of tears, and the desperate need to regain my life to get ME back. I took the pic on the right just after taking my new SoulCycle instructor photos — hence the incredible and very fake lashes. I never imagined having the courage to share the ‘before’ pic, but think it’s important to recognize and celebrate the journey, no matter how painful. Unlike so many stories, this one has a happy ending, one that will hopefully inspire determination and hope!”

This is the story of Emma Zaks, a bubbly, energetic, and very popular SoulCycle instructor. Those who ride with Emma watched this healthy and fit 33-year old woman go through an unimaginable two-year journey — becoming increasingly ill with debilitating symptoms, both gastro-intestinal and neurological, that ultimately resulted in a stroke.

On and off the SoulCycle schedule at first, Emma began subbing out her classes for other instructors. Then followed a long absence. She would later return to teach — a patch on one eye and face swollen from the steroids doctors had prescribed for devastating symptoms no one really could explain. An autoimmune disease of some sort was the rumor. As is her nature, Emma remained her upbeat self through it all, or so it appeared, never letting her riders see the pain and fear going on inside.

Luckily, this story has a happy ending. After her illness was finally diagnosed and treated, Emma started posting little bits of her journey on Facebook. So moved and overwhelmed by her strength and bravery, we asked her to tell us what happened from beginning to end. This is her story in her own words…. and her Facebook posts.

Stephanie Ruhle is the eponymous host of “MSNBC Live with Stephanie Ruhle,” which airs every weekday morning at 9 am. If you watch MSNBC regularly you will also see this busy newswoman pop up on your TV screens at other points during the day — especially now, when political developments are non-stop and there is never a dull moment in our nation’s news.

Previously a banker at Deutsche Bank and Credit Suisse, Stephanie got her start in business television as an anchor and managing editor for Bloomberg Television. There she co-hosted “Bloomberg GO,” Bloomberg’s flagship morning show. Among many other industry leaders, she regularly interviewed such financial titans as former Goldman Sachs President, Gary Cohn, now White House Director of the National Economic Council; Wall Street mogul, Wilbur Ross, now Commerce Secretary; famed “corporate raider” and Wall Street activist, Carl Icahn, now special adviser to the president on regulatory overhaul; and billionaire real estate tycoon, Donald Trump, now the 45th President of the United States.

Like many of those she has covered, Stephanie has shifted from business into political news in what has to be one of the most exciting times to be a reporter. It requires a lot physical and mental stamina. “It comes with a great responsibility,” she says, and you have to be “fitter than ever.” Given the time demands of her job; role as a wife and mother of three kids; and active involvement in women’s leadership development, having founded the Corporate Investment Bank Women’s Network and serving on the board of trustees for Girls Inc., how does Stephanie stay in such obviously good shape?

Looking for a little motivation to get you out on the road? How about a new pair of running shoes! We asked Nike, Asics, Newton, Hoka, and Brooks to send us their top picks for a lightweight neutral trainer. Since different runners like different shoes, I invited Sarah Toland, co-author of Lindsay Vonn’s recently published book, Strong Is The New Beautiful, and a 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier in the 5K and 10K, to road test these running shoes with me. She’s a tall and lanky gazelle of a runner, while I’m shorter and more compact in my running style  — what Sarah describes as “a recreational marathoner with zeal”. My goal is simply to get from point A to point B. Hers is to do it fast! Here are two different runners thoughts on five of the newest top trainers:

Savory Goodness! 9 Healthy Snacks

 

 

We’ve expounded on our love of snacks in many a post. Being as active as we are, and working the long hours that we do, we are always looking for healthy treats to keep us going in between meals. We last shared our favorite sweets in Super Sweets, and now we’re on to the savory. Here’s 9 of our go-to favorites!

ROW 1: HARD BOILED EGG. At about 80 calories with 7 grams of protein, a hard boiled egg is a filling snack that doesn’t fill you up. There is ongoing discussion about the cholesterol count, but recent research has concluded that infrequent egg consumption does not increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Conveniently packaged in its own natural carrying case, boil them up and take them to go!

SEASNAX. Seasnax roasted seaweed sheets are marketed as “strangely addictive” and that they are. This is great news as seaweed is nutrient packed!
