Meter: The Runner’s Review

METER:THE RUNNER’S REVIEW is the quarterly print magazine published by Tracksmith, the relatively new but old school running apparel brand. The line takes its inspiration from the classic running styles of the 1970’s, and combines the look with modern performance fabrics.

Like Tracksmith, METER celebrates the culture and heritage of competitive running. With authenticity and simplicity, the photography and design presents the grace, intensity, and beauty of competitive running at its humblest, and the stories pay homage to its fabled athletes and races. Says Matt Taylor, CEO and Co-Founder of Tracksmith, “METER gives us an opportunity to explore the edges of running culture while also celebrating the history and traditions that make it the greatest and most accessible sport in the world. There’s no other place to get these types of stories.”

SPREADS FROM CURRENT ISSUE03

Available in single issue or subscription, the publications’s fourth issue is now available at Tracksmith.com. It is relay themed, with features such as: “The Women of the Penn Relays”, about the oldest track meet in the world and one at which women were not always welcome; “Izumo Ekiden”, one of Japan’s hugely popular road relays; and “Hood to Coast”, a 198-mile relay that starts halfway up Oregon’s Mt.Hood and finishes in the coastal town of Seaside.

Tory Sport Opens Shop

TORY SPORT FLATIRON

Coinciding with the release of their spring/summer collection, the second season of Tory Sport, is the brand’s much anticipated new store, prominently located in the Flatiron district of Manhattan. An assortment of other sport and fitness brands like Athleta, Nike Running, and New Balance have opened up flagship stores in this area in the last few years, as well as most recently the chic workout wear emporium, Bandier, making it a mecca for those looking for the hippest athletic and “athleisure” apparel.

Tory Sport, the activewear line from Tory Burch, debuted last fall with a pop-up that took over the Tory Burch store on Elizabeth St. Classic and elegant, yet playful and sporty, the spacious new store reflects the spirit of the line. Blue awnings and large screens, featuring videos and images that celebrate the grace and strength of athletes, pop against the building’s historic façade. The interior plays with contrast, providing a clean and minimal backdrop that lets the colorful palette and playful patterns of the new season pop.

Said CEO and Designer Tory Burch, “We thought about the casual vibe of a 70’s surf lodge and reimagined it with Scandinavian design principles.” The feel is chic sports club, with subtle references throughout — leather handrails evoke the grips of old-school tennis racquets, striped floors resemble pool lap lines, and a diamond pattern etched into nickel wall panels references a tennis net. Spring Cleaning: 8 Essential Detox Tips

SHANEY JO DARDEN, FOUNDER OF THE KEEP A BREAST FOUNDATION

Shaney Jo Darden is the Founder of the Keep A Breast Foundation (KAB), a non-profit organization she established in 2005 in response to the growing need for breast cancer awareness programs targeting young people. As a young woman herself, she had a number of friends who were diagnosed with breast cancer in their 20s and it was a wake up call to how early in life breast cancer can strike. She realized the conversation about breast cancer prevention needed to start much earlier, amongst her peers and in a language they spoke.

Keep A Breast began as an art movement. As a young designer in the creative scene of skateboard industry in the 90’s, Shaney jo drew upon the artistic community as a natural breeding ground for awareness and communication. Producing art shows at the time, she wanted to create something closer to the cause. What evolved was a series of customized breast casts, first of friends, painted by different influential artists such as Shepard Fairey and Ed Templeton, and later pro snowboarders, that in 2000 were officially showcased in an exhibition called Keep A Breast.

Keep A Breast shows were organized across the U.S. and throughout Europe, with growing participation by celebrity castees and artists. The success of these art benefits, highlighted by artists emerging from the skateboarding, music and action sports scenes, put breast cancer awareness on the map for a younger generation. Other youth oriented educational programs followed and today the Keep A Breast Foundation has three core programs, Traveling Education Booth, Treasured Chest, and most recently, Non Toxic Revolution — all of which promote breast cancer awareness through Art, Education, Awareness and Action.

While breast cancer is something the media generally focuses on in October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we should be conscious year round of the things we can do to prevent it. As spring officially kicks off, there is no better time than the present. With that in mind, we asked Shaney jo for some specific clean up tips to start the season off right…

W.O.W! Working Out With The Men of Wilhelmina

AT FLEX STUDIOS WITH MODEL CHRIS RYAN, SOS EDITOR CLAUDIA LEBENTHAL,
WILHELMINA CEO BILL WACKERMANN, AND MODEL CJ KOEGEL

PHOTOGRAPHY BY @IMAGISTA

Bill Wackermann is the CEO of Wilhelmina International Inc, having recently taken the helm at the famed modeling agency at the end of January. Although our paths had not crossed previously, Bill and I have common bond, having both spent many years at Condé Nast – he on the business side, most recently as the publisher of Condé Nast Traveler and Glamour, and me on the editorial side at Allure, Womens Sports & Fitness and Self.

Bill is someone who clearly takes his workouts very seriously–not just for the physical benefits, but also the spiritual ones. For this installment of W.O.W, we decided to try something new, a workout neither one of us had done before. Imagine my disappointment (not!), when Bill’s publicist asked if he could bring along two of Wilhelmina’s male models to join us — especially when I checked out the portfolios of CJ Koegel and Chris Ryan. All I can say is these are the days when I really do love my job.

We met up early Monday morning to check out the Flex 90 class at Flex Studios, a jam-packed 90-minute combo of TRX, Barre, and Pilates (30 minutes each). Taught by Jessica Cadden Osborne, coincidentally a Wilhelmina fitness model herself who we featured last summer in a SUP Yoga story, she put us all through our paces in one relentless, supercharged workout.

PART 1 OF FLEX 90: TRX

While we both spend a lot of time working out, TRX, Barre, and Pilates are workouts you can’t fake your way through. On their own, they’re challenging enough, but together they are a brutal. They force you to use those little muscles that the big ones usually compensate for — in addition to a whole lot of core. Bill and I had our fitness put to the test, and I’m proud to say we held our own against the young studs. We chatted the next day about the workout, his new job, and how his approach to fitness is very much in tune with his philosophy on professional success:

Priority Goes Cruising

PRIORITY COAST

Our friends at Priority Bike have just announced a Kickstarter campaign for the newest addition to their line up, the Priority Coast — the first cruiser bike that’s really made for the beach. Designed to withstand sand, salt, and all the elements the coastal beach environment can muster, the Coast will not rust or breakdown like traditional cruisers.

Distinctive to all the bikes in the Priority family is the maintenance and grease-free belt drive system of the Coast in place of a traditional chain. This feature, along with a 100% aluminum frame and fork, stainless steel components and sealed bearings, makes the clunky, heavy steel, hard-to-pedal cruiser a bike of the past. The lightweight, smooth-riding Coast is ideal for riding to the beach for that morning surf session, yoga class, and all your outdoor activities. It even has a surfboard attachment for easy transportation with your board!

Remaining true to Priority’s socially-funded company structure, the pre-sale campaign will run on Kickstarter March 15th through April 15 at the pre-sale price of $349 (regular price $449). And stay tuned, because we’ll be giving one away to a lucky Style of Sport reader as summer gets closer!

On Deck: Photos by Spike

PHOTOS BY SPIKE SKATEBOARD DECKS

Timed coincidentally with the launch of the new cable TV channel from Vice Media, Viceland, of which Spike Jonze is co-president, is a series of skateboards featuring some of the photographer and filmmaker’s most iconic early images. Girl Skateboard Company, which Jonze co-founded in 1993, has just released the “Photos by Spike” board series and reproduced five of his favorite images that include The Beastie Boys (1994), Sonic Youth (1992), Bjork (1995), Nirvana (1991) and Karen O (2004).

Jonze began his career in the action sports world as a photographer shooting BMX and skateboarding for such vertical magazines as Freestylin’ and TransWorld Skateboarding. It was such skateboarding videos as “Video Days”, shot with his inimitable wit and point of view, often while skateboarding himself, that led to directing music videos as the Southern California skate culture intersected with the alternative music scene. The skateboarding footage he shot as cameraman for 100% by Sonic Youth got the attention of MTV in the early 90’s, and he went on to direct music videos for bands like Weezer, The Breeders, and later The Beastie Boys, creating some of their most memorable videos like Sabotage. Jonze’s feature film debut as director was “Being John Malkovich”, followed by such other notable classics as “Adaptation”, “Where The Wild Things Are”, and “Her”, which he also wrote and won the Oscar for Best Writing, Original Screenplay in 2014.

The Photos by Spike decks are available now at your local skateboard shop and March 16th online at crailstore.com. Like all things Spike Jonze, these skateboard decks are guaranteed to become pop cult classics.

Cycle for Survival

Earlier this week, Cycle for Survival, announced they had hit an incredible fundraising milestone… $100 million dollars! Cycle for Survival is an indoor cycling event that has become a national movement. Hosted by Equinox, in partnership with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, it was founded in 2007 by Jennifer Goodman Linn — a Memorial Sloan Kettering patient and Equinox member — with her husband, Dave, following Jen’s own rare cancer diagnosis. They wanted to do something to fight back. Despite losing her battle with cancer in 2011, Jen continues to inspire to this day.

From the $250,000 raised in its first year, to over $29 million already in 2016, now in its 10th year, Cycle for Survival has distinguished itself as the fastest-growing athletic fundraising event. 100 percent of every dollar raised goes directly to fund research and clinical trials led by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for rare cancers that include brain, pancreatic, ovarian, stomach, all types of pediatric cancers, and many others. These account for approximately half of all cancer diagnoses, and are often underfunded. Doctors and researchers who have received Cycle for Survival funding credit these resources for making groundbreaking discoveries possible. I am proud to say as a member of Stacey’s Crew, with just our two bikes we raised $15,667!

STACEY’S CREW: SOULCYCLE’S STACEY GRIFFITH & YOUR EDITOR, CLAUDIA LEBENTHAL

The Cycle for Survival rides take place at Equinox locations in over 15 cities across the country, with multiple rides in each. This year more than 27,000 riders will participate as members of self-formed teams that take 4 consecutive 50-minute spin classes, seeking donations in support for this cycling marathon. There are national teams as well, with riders participating in more than just one event. To look at the leaderboard of fundraising totals for these National Teams is pretty inspiring in itself… $444,492 for Team Perry, $300,734 for Team Ginger Strong, and $280,385 for JP Morgan Chase, just to name a few.

So besides seeking to inform, this post is seeking donations for our team or any other that might inspire you to give. $10, $25, $50, $100 or more… as I always say, there is no such thing as a small donation. Just give something… what you’d spend on a latte, bottle of wine, or nice dinner with friends. Or give a whole lot! You’ll feel good and won’t have to ride a bike for almost 4 hours!

Converse x Andy Warhol

CONVERSE X ANDY WARHOL

A few months ago we featured a collection of limited edition Andy Warhol surfboards. If those were out of your price range, how about a pair of Chuck Taylor All Stars from the Converse Andy Warhol collection?

Continuing their collaboration with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc. for a third season, this collection features the artist’s most famous wallpaper graphics, pop art flowers and cows, reproduced on the classic Chuck’ 70 design, and using modern details to celebrate the original Chuck Taylor All Star from the 1970’s.

There are currently 3 different hightop and 2 low top florals available, plus 2 t-shirt styles in full bloom for spring 2016!
