Countdown to Rio: The Watch

OMEGA SEAMASTER BULLHEAD “RIO 2016”

Continuing our COUNTDOWN TO RIO series, a preview of the sports, athletes and gear we will be seeing next August at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, take a look at the Omega Seamaster Bullhead “RIO 2016” watch. This commemorative timepiece celebrates the Olympic games, highlighting the colors of the Olympic rings with its blue leather strap, and yellow, green, red and black stitching. This color theme is continued on the 60-minute rotating inner bezel, designed to reflect the unity and harmony the Olympic rings signify. There is a 30-minute recorder at 12 o’clock, a seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock and a date window at 3 o’clock.

Omega is the “Official Timekeeper” of the Olympic Games and has been since Los Angeles 1932 when 30 stopwatches were used to time the events to 1/10th of a second. From the evolution to photoelectric timing to 1/1000th of a second, automatic start gates, photo finishes, swimming touch pads, and on screen television time clocks — what athletes are accustomed to when competing and spectators when watching the Olympics, have all been a part of the Omega history of sport timekeeping.

Reflecting a piece of this history, Omega first released this style in 1969. Only 316 of the Seamaster Bullhead “RIO 2016” pieces are being produced. Stamped with the Rio 2016 Olympic Games logo on the caseback, this commemorative watch is sure to become a collector’s item.

Tory Sport

TORY SPORT POP-UP SHOP

Arguably the most anticipated new player in the surging  “Athleisure” market takes the field today. Tory Sport is the new line of athletic wear from Tory Burch, a stand alone brand that is making its debut with a big statement. The line covers a wide range of sport and fitness pursuits, that include running, yoga, tennis, golf, swim and surf, as well as casual pieces for going to and from the gym. Launching with a pop-up shop in Manhattan’s Nolita district, taking over the original Tory Burch boutique on Elizabeth Street, Tory Sport takes the distinctive Tory Burch aesthetic and puts the focus on performance.

Featuring both apparel and accessories, Tory Sport is a chic and elegant take on the sporting life. A lifelong athlete herself, Tory Burch told Style Of Sport, “I was very much a jock growing up. I rode horses, played tennis, lacrosse, and played whatever my brothers did.” Burch still plays a lot of tennis, runs, paddleboards, enjoys hot yoga and spinning. For Tory Sport, functionality has been of the utmost importance from the get go. Said Burch, “We wanted the function to be a given — not necessarily obvious. We spent a lot of time with the inside of the fabric, like taking a running jacket and making it bonded and seam sealed. Quality is super important for us. It’s real function meets style.”

Tory Sport draws from the 70’s sport references with which Burch grew up. “I found I was wearing things from high school that had this retro vibe. “The Royal Tennenbaums” was inspiration, but we wanted to make it modern and do a cool take on that.” A classic pleated pique v-neck tennis dress is crafted from lightweight performance jersey. A running jacket takes vintage varsity style and makes it wind and waterproof, with a hood that zips into the collar. The swimsuits take that graphic swim team style and blend it with quick drying UPF 50 Eurojersey. Patterned and color blocked leggings, tanks and sport bras integrate such technical features as compression, mesh, and reflective detailing — functional details more typical for a sport brand than a fashion line —  infusing classic style with modern performance.

At the same time, what Tory Sport calls “Coming & Going” features casual sporty pieces meant for that transition time pre and post workout. A classic 70’s track suit, pearl covered slip-on sneakers, a merino turtleneck sweater, and a tech knit striped skirt, among other styles, are looks designed to be worn all day.

Paying the same attention to details as the line, the Tory Sport pop up is an integral part of the launch, with a look that is a new take on old country club style. The clean white interior is highlighted by bright canvas cushioned latticework furniture, a graphic surfboard and vintage sport photography. Wainscoting and wide-plank floors create a relaxed and easy setting. There is a monogramming station and vinyl letter press where customers can have select styles—from 70s-inspired track jackets and leggings to wristbands and T-shirts—personalized with their initials. A custom vending machine is filled with vintage sport magazines as well as golf tees, tennis balls, frisbees, water bottles and grip tape.

Tory Sport is available exclusively at torysport.com and at the Tory Sport pop-up shop at 257 Elizabeth St. A permanent Flatiron-district store is set to open in March of 2016.

This Is Not A Basketball Shoe

IT IS MICHELLE WIE’S NEW GOLF SHOE

When champion golfer Michelle Wie hits the links this weekend at the Evian Championship in France, she will be bringing a new look to the course. This self-professed sneakerhead has long been a fan of the Nike Blazer, the iconic high top basketball shoe which first debuted in 1972. Looking for a golf shoe that would reflect her distinct sense of style and shake it up a bit on the fairway, Wie asked Nike to design a variation for golf.

Produced in hot pink with a camouflage Swoosh, and paired with a performance outsole engineered for traction, the Nike Blazer Golf serves both the style and functionality requisites of the athlete. Wie, who wanted to feel more support on her her swing and greater connection to the ground, saw the high top as the solution. As an additional style detail, inside the tongue are the scores from each round of Wie’s unforgettable 2014 US Open victory, her first major win.

Screen-Shot-2015-09-09-at-5.01.28-PM-600x528OH… AND THIS IS HER NEW HAIRSTYLE TOO!

Over the past four decades, the Nike Blazer has evolved to include silhouettes designed for skate, sportswear and, now, golf. The Women’s Nike Blazer from Nike Golf will be available in early 2016 at nike.com and select retailers.

NFL 2015: The 10 Things You Need To Know!

Tonight we kick off the 2015 NFL season with Thursday Night Football! The Pittsburgh Steelers are playing the Superbowl winning New England Patriots, with Tom Brady’s suspension overturned just in time to have him back in the game. Now you may be asking yourself, “Didn’t I see an NFL game last weekend?” That was just a “pre-season” warm-up. Week 1 of the 16 game regular season is finally here and it’s time for the starting lineup to take the field. Here are the 10 things you need to know to sound sassy, sexy and smart should you find yourself in the middle of an NFL conversation…

1. TOM BRADY AND “DEFLATEGATE…

On the field or on the bench? You may have heard that during last year’s AFC playoff game versus the Indianapolis Colts, Tom Brady may have deflated the footballs so that he and his teammates would have a better grip in the poor weather conditions. Originally suspended four games for “general awareness of ball deflation by others”, that decision was recently nullified on the argument it was unfair. A federal judge criticized NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for dispensing “his own brand of industrial justice.” The union had planned to call Goodell as a witness, but was denied that opportunity when Goodell appointed himself as the appeal officer. Which brings us to number 2…

2. NFL COMMISSIONER ROGER GOODELL

Once again the center of football news, for nine years Roger Goodell has sat at the helm of the most popular sport in America. As NFL Commissioner, Goodell is judge, jury and executioner on all things league related. He even gets to hear appeals of his own rulings, and is often is the hot seat as a result of his decisions. You may recall last year’s Ray Rice scandal, when then Baltimore Ravens’ running back knocked out his fiance and dragged her unconscious body out of the elevator of the Revel Casino Hotel in Atlantic City. He was originally only suspended for two games (which makes Tom Brady’s 4 game suspension really bizarre), which was later overturned to an “indefinite suspension.” If you really want to “break the ice” at an NFL viewing party, just ask someone, “Who does Roger Goodell think he is?”

3. RG3 & THE WASHINGTON REDSKINS

Robert Griffin, III or “RG3” as he is known, was the starting quarterback for the Washington Redskins up until a few days ago. Entering his third year in the league, to say his tenure has been polarizing is an understatement. He’s gone from offensive rookie of the year, to fans clamoring for his backup to take the job, to getting injured this preseason, and finally losing his starting job. If you want to sound like you’re “in the know” you might ask “Can RG3 be a starting quarterback again?” Read More

Derek Lam 10 Crosby x Athleta

DEREK LAM 10 CROSBY AT ATHLETA SOHO

Last night the much anticipated collaboration between Derek Lam 10 Crosby and Athleta made its debut at the new Athleta Soho store in NYC. With the booming “athleisure” trend and explosive growth of women’s activewear, Athleta and Derek Lam 10 Crosby saw the opportunity to create a collection that incorporates Lam’s design aesthetic with Athleta’s technical fabrics and fitness expertise. Combining fashion with performance, the result is a minimal but fun, stylish but functional collection of athletic apparel that easily makes the transition from the gym to all day wear.

This is the first designer collaboration for Athleta who saw Derek Lam as the perfect partner to create a lifestyle collection that transcends the gym. Color blocked leggings and tops, oversized striped cashmere sweaters, leather hoodies and track pants, and layered sweatshirts are few of the signature pieces. Said Athleta President Nancy Green to Style Of Sport, “I wanted to do a collaboration with a designer as extremely talented as Derek, and create something that didn’t exist out there.”

“Our customer leads a very active lifestyle,” said Derek Lam. “Fitness is very much a part of it and we always strive to create clothing which works in her life. Athleta’s expertise in performance fabrics and fibers has offered us a really exciting opportunity to create a collection which complements perfectly what we do for Derek Lam 10 Crosby.”

The Derek Lam 10c Athleta collection is available now in select stores and online.

Shopping Birdwell Beach Britches

BIRDWELL BEACH BRITCHES OPENS NEW MANHATTAN BEACH SHOP

In 1961, Carrie Birdwell Mann transformed her small southern California home into a sewing room and store, launching Birdwell Beach Britches. It was one of the first businesses specializing in surf wear, making her living room one of the first surf shops. Her first employees were her husband and son, and her first customers were lifeguards in Newport Beach. These simple nylon board shorts with their quirky “Birdie” mascot would become the staple of Southern California lifeguards and surfers, and establish Birdwell as their iconic heritage brand.

54 years since its founding, Birdwell has just opened its first ever standalone shop in Manhattan Beach, California. Designed by Birdwell’s creative director Natas Kaupas, legendary skateboarder and surf influencer, the Manhattan Beach store is the embodiment of his vision for the brand. The interior’s displays and walls are decorated with art and artifacts from Birdwell’s rich Southern California history and the structural elements used in the space evoke the strength and utility of Birdwell’s purpose built apparel. The shop features a vast selection of Birdwell product, including custom designs and limited-edition styles not available anywhere else.

The calendar may say summer is winding down, but there are still plenty of beach days left for a new pair of Birdwells. The store is located at 1300 Highland Street, Unit 106, Manhattan Beach, CA.
