The Wimbledon tennis tournament is one of the oldest sporting events in the world, first played in 1887. It is the third of the Grand Slam events and the only major still played on grass. When the tournament commences Monday, all players will step on to the court in white, as they have done for more than 125 years, adhering the strict traditional dress code of The All England Club. This year’s tournament will be whiter than ever with accent colors being limited to no more than 1 centimeter of trim.

Now we think tennis whites are one of the chicest looks in sport, and no matter the tournament have a winning style that can’t be beat. While we may be bending the rules a little in terms of this year’s restrictions, below are a few of our favorite tennis whites, a number of which will be making their debut on the grass courts of Wimbledon this week.

ABOVE:  NIKECOURT FLARE $200. Look for #1 seed Serena Williams to be sporting this revolutionary new tennis shoe from Nike at Wimbledon this week. It’s the first on-court shoe engineered specifically for this great champion. Offering lightweight stability in a more minimal, low-profile shoe, the extended stretch collar gives streamlined support, extra-durable rubber outsole provides more traction, and mesh overlays add breathability and comfort.

Good Vibrations

HYPERICE VYPER FOAM ROLLER

The benefits of foam rolling have been well documented for increased flexibility and range of motion; faster muscle recovery; better circulation; and thus improved overall sports performance. The latest evolution of the foam roller adds vibration therapy into the mix, another established recovery technique, and takes the foam roller to a whole new level.

The HyperIce Vyper is the first high intensity vibrating fitness roller. Word is Kobe Bryant was using a foam roller on a Power Plate, the full body vibration machine, which inspired the idea. The Vyper has 3 speeds of vibration powered by a rechargeable 16.8 Lithium Ion battery. Vibration Therapy delivers high frequency oscillations that force muscles to rapidly contract and relax. While foam rollers are the go to recovery tool, adding vibration with the intensity and frequency of the Vyper allows the therapeutic benefits to permeate deeper.

HyperIce is recognized for creating a new generation of wearable icepacks that have become post-workout recovery favorites for such high-profile athletes as Lindsay Vonn, Blake Griffin, and Hope Solo. The Vyper is their second product and is being utilized used by professional and everyday athletes alike to warm up and recover from training and competition.

Fashion-A-Bell: Carmen dell’Orefice

NORMAN PARKINSON & CARMEN DELL’OREFICE FROM BRITISH VOGUE JULY 1959
©CHRISTOPHER & GREGORY HARTLEY

Carmen dell’Orefice is one of the iconic models in fashion history, most famous in her older years for her unmistakable white coiffure. The fantastic image above is from British Vogue, July 1959, and shows her as a young model with renowned fashion photographer, Norman Parkinson. Loving the adventurous “Style of Sport” spirit of the image, we were curious about the story behind the picture.

While Parkinson was the photographer on the shoot in Bermuda, this image was actually taken by Bronson Hartley who ran a local helmet diving operation. Bell or Helmet Diving is a very old concept and the precursor to scuba diving. Using the same principle as a glass turned upside down underwater, water pressure keeps air trapped inside an open-bottomed metal helmet. Fresh air is then pumped in through an attached hose allowing divers to walk around the sea floor, with no training required.

Bronson was an esteemed marine biologist who had first come to Bermuda from New York City in 1930 with his family as a child to escape the Depression. At age ten he built his first diving helmet and continued to evolve his model. His hobby would later become his profession as he began taking adventurous tourists, and later celebrities like Charlton Heston, on the underwater adventure of a lifetime.

Continuing his zeal for invention, Bronson started making his own cameras and underwater housings. A pioneer in undersea photography, he made the first ever color 35mm underwater movie, “Mainstreet Undersea”, starring his wife, Martica, a model and actress. Hartley and the making of the film were featured in the December 15, 1952 issue of LIFE. For those who remember the show, Martica was a guest on “Whats My Line.” Read More

The “Mini” Marathon

On a steamy summer day more typical of August than June, elite and recreational runners alike took to New York City’s Central Park and bordering Central Park West Saturday morning for the Oakley Mini 10k. I was invited to run on Team Oakley, the sponsor of the race, and decked out in cool Oakley Women gear, I joined the record number of 7,874 finishers. Although it’s called the “Mini”, this morning’s heat made the 6.2 mile race feel more like a marathon.

Founded in 1972 by New York Road Runners, what was then called a the “mini” marathon was the world’s first road race exclusively for women, and featured 72 finishers in its inaugural running. The race got its name from NYRR founder Fred Lebow who convinced sponsors to support a 6 mile “mini” marathon and named it after the miniskirt. It was later lengthened another .2 miles to a 10k race. For those of you who grew up in NYC like myself, you might remember its former name, the “Leggs Mini Marathon” — the title sponsor being the panty hose packaged in the egg shaped container.

Running alongside me this morning were Oakley ambassadors Jamie Anderson, 2014 Olympic Snowboard Slopestyle Gold Medalist, and Olympic Ski Jumper Sarah Hendrickson. Oakley’s new ONE OBSESSION campaign invites all athletes to join the brand’s global network of 450 renowned ambassadors in living out their passions. Always fun having Olympic athletes as teammates and not bad getting to hang out at the VIP tent right at the finish line either!

The Triple Crown

AMERICAN PHAROAH WINNING THE BELMONT STAKES AND THE TRIPLE CROWN

History was made yesterday as American Pharoah became only the 12th horse in history to win the Triple Crown. Ending a 37 year drought without a winner, since Affirmed won the Triple Crown in 1978, jockey Victor Espinoza rode American Pharoah to a victory at the Belmont Stakes. Espinoza had had two previous opportunities to win the Triple Crown with California Chrome last year and War Emblem in 2002. Winning the Triple Crown with American Pharoah, Espinoza also established himself as one of the greatest jockeys of all time as well with this crowning achievement.

triple-crown-1

SEVEN OF ELEVEN TRIPLE CROWN WINNERS, CLOCKWISE TOP LEFT: WAR ADMIRAL 1937; AFFIRMED (right) 1978; COUNT FLEET 1943; CITATION 1948; SIR BARTON 1919; OMAHA 1935; SEATTLE SLEW 1977

To be a Triple Crown winner, a horse (and his jockey) must accomplish the grueling task of winning the Kentucky Derby (1 1/4 mi), the Preakness Stakes (1 3/16 mi), and the Belmont Stakes (1 1/2 mi), all in the same racing season. Only 11 thoroughbreds have ever accomplished this feat since the series began in 1919, when Sir Barton won the first Triple Crown. Due to the longer length of the track and the fresh competition of horses who have not competed in the previous two races, it is very difficult for a Triple Crown contender to win that last race at Belmont. You may remember Smarty Jones in 2004, I’ll Have Another in 2013, and California Chrome in 2014, who were three of the 23 horses who have won at the Derby and at Preakness, but not at Belmont. The last horse to achieve horse racing’s most prestigious honor was Affirmed in 1978. Read More

The Women’s World Cup Kicks Off

FROM THE US WOMENS NATIONAL TEAM:
LAUREN CHENEY, ALEX MORGAN, ABBY WAMBACH, CARLI LLOYD

The men had their turn on the world soccer stage last summer, and now it’s almost time for the ladies to show us how the game is played. The FIFA Womens World Cup kicks off this Saturday, June 6, in Canada, with the best teams in the world competing for one of the most coveted trophies in sport. All games will be televised, and the majority will be shown in the US by Fox Sports 1. CLICK HERE for the schedule and TV listings.

For all you soccer fans, and those who want to know what to know, here’s your SOS Guide to the Womens World Cup:

FIFA Under Fire.

Unfortunately as the tournament begins, soccer’s global governing body, Fédération Internationale de Football Association, or FIFA, has been headline news. Last week, Swiss police arrested several FIFA officials and the US Justice Department charged 14 officials with corruption, bribery, fraud, and money laundering, dating back to the 1990s. The accepted bribes and kickbacks are estimated at more than $150m, including an alleged $10m bribe South Africa paid in exchange for support in its 2010 World Cup bid. Switzerland is also investigating whether FIFA officials were bribed in their selection of Russia and Qatar, respectively, as the 2018 and 2022 World Cup hosts.

Two days after the scandal broke, FIFA’s president Sepp Blatter was re-elected to a fifth term, but on Tuesday he announced his resignation. Interpol (the International Criminal Police Organization) has since filed wanted person notices for six people involved in the Department of Justice’s indictment, and yesterday Chuck Blazer, a former FIFA exec, admitted he (and others) accepted bribes when choosing the World Cup venues in 1998 and 2010. This developing story will surely continue to be the center of conversation as the Women’s World Cup tournament begins.

There will be six groups, lettered A-F; the top 16 teams will go on to the Round of 16. The top 8 teams will meet in the Quarter-finals on June 26 and 27, with winners advancing to the Semi-finals on June 30 and July 1. The two teams who lose in the Semi-finals will play in a match for Third Place on July 4, and the tournament will wrap up with the Final game on Sunday, July 5. Read More

Out for a Run: Preppy New England Style

large-header-1 copy

This story originally appeared on one of our favorite websites, WELL+GOOD, the go-to-guide for all things health, fitness, and wellness!

If a fitness fashion brand spent summers on Cape Cod or Martha’s Vineyard, ran track growing up, and wore more J.Crew than Helmut Lang, it would be TRACKSMITH. And if you’re someone who’s more likely to be caught in your dad’s worn-in Oxford than rocking a leather jacket, it might just be the line you’ve been waiting for. The Boston-born activewear brand, which launched a men’s line last summer, is debuting its women’s collection online today (and with a pop up on Boston’s Newbury Street just in time for the Boston Marathon crowds).

Tracksmith has deep roots in the history and tradition of running—and it’s inspired by the classic, New England (and yes, a little bit preppy) style. So their aesthetic is whole different than what you’ll find on Carbon38’s site or at Bandier. Translation: There’s not a pop of neon, mesh detail, or splashy print in sight.

The line is the brainchild of co-founder and CEO Matt Taylor, who has running in his blood. Taylor was a collegiate track runner at Yale, worked as the marketing director of Puma for a few years, and created the wildly popular Usain Bolt mobile app during the 2012 Olympics. Read More
