Seeing Fatima’s Eyes

“Seeing Fatima’s Eyes” is the second volume in the Um Yeah series of surf photography books by Thomas Campbell, and holds a collection of images highlighting his time spent in Morocco over the years since 1991. The book follows “Slide Your Brains Out”, the first in the series published in 2012.

Morocco is not a place one immediately associates with surfing, but Campbell is not your typical surf photographer. Transcending the genre and eschewing the typical action shots seen in surf magazines, his images are more of a personal travel journal, focusing on the details of space and time — the landscape, energy, people, and yes, surfers encountered along the way. Moody, evocative and ethereal, his images have an appeal beyond surfing for those who simply respond to beautiful photography taken with a unique point of view.

SEEING FATIMA 3

SEEING FATIMA 10

Morocco marks the southern terminus of a famed European surf pilgrimage: France in September, Spain in October, Portugal in November, across the Strait of Gibraltar to Tangier, and then finally to Morocco for the winter. Campbell found himself on this trail by coincidence. He told Style of Sport, “It was kind of random how I got there. It was the beginning of long period of travel. I hitchhiked across states, and ended up in New York. I spent about a month there and then got a cheap ticket to Europe to go on a skateboard tour around the United Kingdom and Scotland. From there I went to Spain and camped out at Mundaka (Basque Country) for a month and then down to Portugal. I saw the same people surfing in Portugal as I had in Spain, and quite a few were heading to Morocco from there. I didn’t really know about this migration that happens.”

It was a gallery in Morocco that gave Campbell his first solo show. He decided to return there the following year to create the body of work during wave season. As he describes in an interview in the book, “I rented an apartment-house style place. It was a really rustic spot with three small bedrooms, right in Taghazout just inside of Anchor Point. It was $80/mo. Here – at home – I couldn’t even afford to have my own studio. But in Morocco, I could afford to live and work. It was really an amazing time, I kind of let the amount of swell dictate when I would surf or paint.”

Rory’s Special Shoes

When Rory McIlroy tees off this weekend at the Irish Open at Royal Country Down, he will not be be playing for himself but for the Rory Foundation, which raises funds for children’s charities around the world. He announced that if he wins, he’ll give the $638,000 first prize to the Rory Foundation.

He will also let his feet do the talking. During each round of the Irish Open, McIlroy will lace up a different pair of strikingly unique Nike Lunar Control 3 golf shoes, each designed by a child whose life has been impacted by cancer. McIlroy, the Rory Foundation and Nike worked together with the Cancer Fund for Children, a charity in Northern Ireland that provides support to kids whose lives have been affected by cancer, to raise awareness through these NIKEiD designs.

“I’m delighted that the young people associated with the Cancer Fund for Children got to design my shoes,” said McIlroy. “The shoes are really unique with some crazy designs. The Irish Open is going to be a very special event for golf and my Foundation and I am excited to compete in them this week.” These NIKEiD designs can be purchased on NIKEiD.com and a portion of the proceeds will benefit The Rory Foundation.

CLOCKWISE TOP LEFT: Round One: Designed by Sara Lockhart. “I read online that Rory really likes different shades of green so I combined that with some of my favorite colors,” said Lockhart, 12, whose mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Rory’s verdict: “I like the message she’s put on the tongue. She wrote ‘good luck’ on them.”

Round Two: Designed by Ryan Keenan. “I chose the colors because it is for the Irish Open and they are colors associated with Ireland,” said Keenan, 16, whose mom was diagnosed with cancer. Rory’s verdict: “He’s put a little message on the tongue saying, ‘Go Rory,’ so they’re pretty cool for Friday.”

Round Three: Designed by Chloe Hyndman. “I picked black and white to make them look professional, but then added a print to keep them fun and recent,” said Hyndman, 15, whose mom was diagnosed with cancer. Rory’s verdict: “I think these are pretty self-explanatory. You’ve got the little pebble/grain design, which is pretty cool, and purple with a little bit of blue in the laces.”

Round Four: Designed by Alex Kernaghan. “It says ‘Be You’ on my Nike shoes because that’s all you ever should be — yourself,” said Kernaghan, 13, whose father recently passed away from cancer. “I also added in a bit of blue as it’s my dad’s favorite color and yellow to represent the charity.” Rory’s verdict: “Alex has designed these shoes which have basically every color in the rainbow… These are a pretty funky pair of shoes and I’m excited to wear them.”

Zara Terez

ZARA TEREZ (UPPER RIGHT) AT HER SHOWROOM

Scan the room at most popular boutique fitness and yoga studios like Soul Cycle, Barry’s Bootcamp, and Pure Yoga; online fitness shops like Carbon 38, Bandier, and Net-A-Sporter; and the fitness departments at stores like Nordstroms and Saks Fith Avenue, and you’ll see a vast assortment of crazy prints, bold colors and graphic patterns. The biggest trend in fitness apparel now is printed leggings, and a handful of specialty fitness brands have established themselves as the trendy favorites: Prismsport, Onzie, Olympia, and one of the most popular, Zara Terez.

Zara Terez is the woman behind this burgeoning brand and she is 29 years old. Her wild and whimsical prints like Candy Crush, Mix Tape, Some Kale, Peacock, Pineapple and Emoji cannot be missed. Terez was raised in the fashion business. Her father, who she describes as a “garmento” owned Budget Dress, and was a manufacturer and wholesaler of women’s dresses. Her mother was the owner of All My Favorite Things, a manufacturer of jewelry and accessories in New York. Both are now retired.

Terez originally launched her brand as a leather handbag company, and almost by accident. Stumbling upon a custom leather shop in lower Manhattan in 2008, she asked if they could make a hundred bags of her design. When they said yes, she asked about a thousand. She saw there was a market for cool but affordable handbags. Terez told Style of Sport, “Everything was either high-end designer or mass market, but there was nothing in that $300-400 range. There was also not enough stuff out there that allowed for freedom of expression.” She was determined to make them here as well. “I was going to rebuild the garment district,” she commented with youthful determination, having watched so much of the fashion manufacturing business leave NYC as she was growing up.

Cargo Bike

MADSEN KG271 BUCKET CARGO BIKE
LOAD IT UP: 40 GALLON CARGO PASSENGER BUCKET CAN SEAT FOUR

With cycling having grown in such popularity as a way to commute and get around in everyday life, cargo bikes are now gaining traction as an eco-friendly way for people to transport more than just themselves. As popular alternatives to cars, cargo bikes are popping up in cities and suburbs, transporting groceries, delivering packages and even taking the kids to school. And while once boxy eyesores, cargo bikes have taken on the same sophisticated design aesthetic as other popular bicycles.

Cargo bikes have been quite popular in Europe for many years. Dutch tradesmen first used cargo bikes in the 19th century to deliver their goods before cars were invented. The traditional style of cargo bike, the bakfietsen (which is Dutch for “box bike”), is a normal two-tire bike with a cargo box mounted in front of the handlebars. Another common style, called a longtail, has a longer frame and an extended box over the back wheel.

There are many added features that modern cargo bikes offer. The Xtracycle EdgeRunner, for example, a popular brand in the US, can carry up to 250 lbs, has all weather brakes, boasts a selection of four different colors, and comes in two sizes. Bullitt makes a cargo bike built for speed and Yuba offers an electric cargo bike, the Spicy Curry.

Businesses worldwide are using cargo bikes not only to increase their eco-friendliness, but to also cut costs and utilize a new form of advertising. At select Ikea stores in the Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden, customers can rent a cargo bike to take their purchases home. In Copenhagen, the mail is delivered by cargo bike. The Whole Foods on Third & 3rd in Brooklyn partnered with People’s Cargo to create a custom solar-powered bike that includes a cooler for delivering groceries. United Parcel Service (UPS) has experimented with bike delivery in Rhode Island and Oregon. Cargo bikes are even being used in Sao Paulo, Brazil as “pop-up public squares”. If you don’t own a cargo bike, you can even rent one from online sites such as Spinlister.

If you’ve adopted cycling as your preferred mode of transportation, the cargo bike is the next step in the evolution of your pedal power.

Wax And Wool

ALMOND X WOOLRICH

We love to see collaborations among sport brands, and the new Almond x Woolrich launch of the “Wax and Wool” collection brings together two of our favorites. Comprised of custom handmade surfboards, and made in USA apparel, it could be called “Woods and Water,” as the collection unites the heritage of Woolrich, the Original Outdoor Company, and the coastal lifestyle of California’s Almond Surfboards.

The clothing, which includes both men’s and women’s pieces, was designed for a perfect day at the beach. The “Wax and Wool” collection includes graphic tees, blankets, a tote bag, henleys, sweatshirts and corduroy walk shorts. Also included in the collaboration are custom Woolrich inspired surfboards. Custom built and hand shaped by Almond, the boards feature prints inspired by the iconic Woolrich buffalo check.

Each piece reflects the different backgrounds of these two brands, yet common appreciation for timeless, quality goods.

The Fight Of The Century

FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR. AND MANNY PACQUIAO

In what is being billed as the “Fight Of The Century”, tonight Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. will finally square off in one of the most anticipated championship fights in the history of boxing. While you may not care about the sport, it is certainly the topic of conversation. Here’s the who, what, when, where and why you need to know to make you sound like a boxing fan. You might even turn a few heads with your new found expertise!

WHO: Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao… aka “MONEY” and “PAC-MAN

Floyd Mayweather Jr., who hails from Grand Rapids, Michigan, is the undefeated, 11-time world champion boxer who was named by Forbes as the highest paid athlete in the world in 2014. With a win on Saturday, he is just one more win away from tying famed Rocky Marciano’s all-time record of 49-0. Outside the ring, Mayweather doesn’t have a shiny record however. He’s faced seven assault charges, serving two stints in jail, as well as other incidences with domestic violence, probation violations, and defamation claims.

That’s why we’re rooting for Manny Pacquaio. Pacquiao is also a world champion professional boxer who is a native of the Philippines. He has some interesting part-time gigs including Philippine Congressman and head coach of the Kia Sorento basketball team. He even played seven minutes in one of his team’s game, adding professional basketball player to his resume. His experiences and enthusiasm outside the ring are inspiring.

Rumor has it that Mayweather is “allergic to southpaws” – southpaw is a boxing term for a left-handed fighter, so Pacquiao’s left-handedness could be the key to his success. Oscar De La Hoya, who lost to Mayweather, told the Wall Street Journal: “Mayweather has never fought a lefty who moves in and out, side to side like Pacquiao.” Though Mayweather is heavily favored to win, you’ve always got to believe in the underdog.

WHAT: The most lucrative fight… EVER

Mayweather and Pacquiao have agreed to split the nearly $300 million purse 60-40. Some sources have projected as much as an additional $400 million in revenue. Though the exact details of the monetary agreement between the two boxers haven’t been explicitly revealed, we do know that it will be the most profitable match in history.
