This Is An E-Bike?

THE ARCHONT ELECTRO BY ONO BIKES

A few months back we ran a feature called “The E-Bike Got Cool”. Well, it just got even cooler, and going green has never looked so good. The Archont Electro by Ono Bikes is an outrageously stylish reinterpretation of the electric bicycle, completely redefining the category.

Ono Bikes is a custom e-bike and handcrafted bicycle manufacturer, seeking to change the way society portrays urban personal electric transportation. The Archont Electro is a three meter long, “Easy Rider” inspired bicycle. Its minimal long sweeping curves and sharp dips gracefully outline a chopper shape. The wheels, designed with an overabundance of spokes, enhance its elegant design. Add to that a classic Brooks saddle.

With all this beauty comes a powerful machine as well. In place of and designed like a fuel tank is a carbon fiber case which holds the bike’s 72v battery. The motor is mounted at the rear wheel, and rated at a colossal 7Kw, powering the bike up to 50mph.

Adding beauty, speed and sustainability together, the Archont Electro is sure to get your motor running!

The Smart Set

3 NEW SMARTWATCHES:
SAMSUNG GEAR S2, MOVADO MUSEUM SPORT MOTION, TAG HEUER CONNECTED

The Apple Watch gave a new face to wearable technology, creating a beautifully designed timepiece that doubles as a mini, albeit limited, wrist computer. It has inspired a smart looking set of new smartwatches, integrating smartphone technology and biometric tracking into a wristwatch. The Samsung Gear S2, Movado Museum Sport Motion, and Tag Heuer Connected are 3 of the hot new smartwatches to hit the market. As opposed to looking like high-tech gadgets, however, these three smartwatches could be mistaken for traditional watches, their faces deceptively camouflaging the state of the art functionality just beneath the surface.

SAMSUNG GEAR S2 $249. With its stylish design and selection of customizable watch face designs, from sleek modern to classic chronograph, the Samsung Gear S2, is the smartwatch for any occasion. The circular face and bezel let you dial effortlessly between functions, and once paired with a compatible Android phone, 3G connectivity lets you call, text, email and receive notifications, even when your phone isn’t nearby. Built-in wireless charging keeps the Gear S2 powered up with a wireless charging dock. Available in a variety of different wristbands.

MOVADO MUSEUM SPORT MOTION $995Marrying iconic Movado design with smart technology, Movado Motion timepieces infuse Swiss made elegance into wearable technology. Clean analog dials feature a date indicator subdial that tracks daily activity and sleep goals when the watch is connected to a compatible Android (4.4.3+) or iOS (8+) smartphone or tablet. With its clean and modern design, this sporty timepiece looks great anywhere. Shown here with a perforated rubber strap, it is also available in silver and black stainless steel.

TAG HEUER CONNECTED $1500. The Swiss craftsmanship of TAG Heuer meets smartwatch technology with the Connected. The first Google smartwatch powered by Intel, the TAG Heuer Connected is built on the latest release of Android Wear with thousands of apps available at the Google Play store. It is also iOS compatible. The design was inspired by the iconic Carrera line, and the price tag reflects its premium materials such as a titanium case and a 46mm sapphire crystal display with 240ppi resolution (just shy of the Apple Watch’s 290ppi). Wind and weather monitoring, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a microphone for voice commands are other features, and it is available in in seven colors.

Lift off

We love having access to the training and performance edge of elite and professional athletes. The latest to come across our radar are the XG4 Performance Insoles, carbon fiber insoles that add a burst of energy to every stride.

The XG4 takes an athlete’s own energy in and unleashes it back with a force to generate more speed, power and distance. Matt Arciuolo, Founder of Roar Athletic Performance, developed the patented carbon fiber insoles working with the United States Olympic Bobsled and Skeleton Team. In these sports, the power generated in the push off is critical to the speed of the run. Seeking to design something light and thin, that would fit into the tight-fitting shoes worn by these athletes, he turned to carbon fiber. Stronger than steel and lighter than aluminum, he developed a carbon fiber composite capable of absorbing and releasing energy. Normally carbon fiber is very rigid, but Arciuolo told Style of Sport, “We took that theory and stood it on its head. We wanted to make a carbon fiber that would flex.” And flex these insoles do, with a force to launch a sneaker 15 feet up and out, as demonstrated in HERE in this video.

XG4-Sprint-Contour1-800x300

XG4 PERFORMANCE INSOLE

Every sport is reliant on the athlete’s interaction with ground — the more efficient, the better the performance. The insoles store energy with each foot strike, and release it back with palpable kick at lift off, as this runner can attest.

The XG4 weighs .7 oz, less than the insole it replaces. There are four 4 flexes for different athletes, sports and weights. Employed by multiple NFL, MLB, and NBA teams, in addition to a number of Division 1 college teams, no matter the sport, the XG4 can provide the extra boost to make any athlete feel like a pro!

In The Loopt

HORIZON AIR AIRLINE SEATS; LOOPTWORKS ALASKA AIRLINES CARRY ON CROSSBODY

Horizon Air, the regional carrier for Alaska Airlines, periodically replaces the seat covers on their planes as a part of their regular maintenance procedures. When that time came most recently, they approached the Portland, OR, based company, Looptworks, to come up with a cool way to upcycle the leather on the seats into something completely new. Looptworks is brand that works with a variety of high profile and socially responsible companies to transform what would end up in a landfill into beautiful new products. Thus was created the Looptworks Alaska Airlines Carry-On Collection, which includes a wallet, laptop sleeve, tote, crossbody and messenger bag — all made with repurposed seat leather from Horizon Air.

Looptworks designs and manufactures bags made only with excess and waste materials – and they do it in a tangible way that makes sustainability a more graspable concept. They “upcycle”, a subset of recycling, which means they repurpose waste material into something that has equal or greater value. The extra neoprene from wetsuit manufacturers; high-end merino wool from architectural textile firm FilzFelt; leather from Langlitz Leathers, the legendary mecca for motorcycle jackets in Portland, are all reborn as bags that are as great looking as they environmentally friendly.

looptworks-bags

Top L-R: FELT AND LEATHER MESSENGER BAG $300. Partnership with FilzFelt, makers of German-milled, 100% Merino wool felt. Accentuated with premium excess leather from the footwear industry. LOOPT CLASSICS DUFFLE $350. Made with excess jacket leather from Langlitz Leathers. LUV SEAT BACKPACK $250. Made from authentic Southwest Airlines seat leather. Bottom L-R: ALASKA AIRLINES CARRY ON MESSENGER BAG $230. Hand-made, hand-numbered, and backed by lifetime warranty. HOPTU LAPTOP SLEEVE $30. Manufactured from excess wetsuit neoprene. NORTHWEST MESSENGER BAG $180. Made from premium, distressed leather from the bag industry and 1680 polyester from the outdoor gear industry.

Looptworks uses materials that are not just post-consumer, like the airline seats, but also virgin materials that have never been used— excess and scraps too small for the product originally intended, but perfect for something else. And part of their mission is finding those companies to partner with who are also looking to relieve the impact of the manufacturing process on the environment. Says Nick Mastors, Marketing Director of Looptworks, “There are a bunch of companies already out there creating a bunch of waste. If we can we find ways of repurposing that waste and turning it into something useful, then it directly offsets the need to make the same product with new materials.”

With our planet facing such extreme environmental challenges, the word sustainability gets thrown around, and sometimes it’s too overwhelming to comprehend. With the mandate to use only what already exists, Looptworks is taking that on one bag at a time. Says Mastors, “The name Looptworks refers to a closed-loop manufacturing system, where everything that is created, at the end of its useful life gets re-entered into the supply chain such that we don’t have to cut down forests, we don’t have to have landfill, we don’t have to mine for things. And it’s very cool to hold in your hand a product that directly embodies that vision.”

And cool these bags are. It’s one thing to be so environmentally and socially responsible in your manufacturing processes, but another to design a product so stylish and functional that people would buy it regardless. The Looptworks bags are just that, and make great holiday gifts too!

UNICEF Kid Power!

UNICEF is the original kids-helping-kids organization. You’d be hard pressed to find someone who didn’t “Trick or Treat for UNICEF” as a kid, which was likely their first experience with charitable fundraising. Now in a new initiative, utilizing that same altruistic spirit, The U.S. Fund for UNICEF is launching UNICEF Kid Power, a program where under-active kids are incentivized to be more active by helping feed malnourished children — and it all happens with use of a fitness band.

Wearable technology has gotten charitable. The Kid Power Band is the world’s first “wearable-for-good™” Fitness band. Target, as the exclusive retailer, has teamed up with the U.S. Fund for UNICEF to help bring UNICEF Kid Power to households and students across the country.

Caryl Stern, President & CEO of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, told Style Of Sport, “There are 2 reports… 1 in 4 American kids are underactive, and 1 in 4 kids around the world are malnourished to the point of starvation. You sit in your office and think, ‘How can it be that 1 in 4 kids is wasting what 1 in 4 kids is dying from. How do we marry that?’ Thus Kid Power was born.”

Here’s how it works: Kids wear the UNICEF Kid Power Band, a child-friendly fitness band they can use with the free Kid Power companion app. They go on missions through the app, learn about new cultures and earn points for completing activities and challenges. These points unlock therapeutic food packets that UNICEF delivers to severely malnourished children around the world. The more kids move, the more points they earn, and the more lives they save. Guests will be able to follow along on the UNICEF Kid Power website to track the total points earned, therapeutic food packets donated and impact made by kids all over the U.S.

The program already has a No. 1 fan: pop superstar P!nk (above) is the UNICEF Kid Power spokesperson. “Healthy living and positivity are at the center of my life,” she says. “With UNICEF Kid Power, kids and families can move and have fun, all while saving the lives of children around the world.”

Ian Ruhter: Images of the American West

YOSEMITE FALLS, 2012

Now on view at the Danziger Gallery in New York City are the photographs of Ian Ruhter, extraordinary large scale images of the American West. Ruhter’s photographs are a tribute to the great 19th century American landscape photographers, created as tintypes, a method of printing popular in the late 1800’s where the photograph is developed directly onto a thin sheet of metal. Ruhter’s images, at 48 x 60” however, are on a scale inconceivable in their time.

Five years ago, Ruhter began to experiment with the tintype process, which involves pouring a liquid mixture of iodides, bromides, and a solution called collodion over a glass or aluminum plate. The plate is then bathed in silver nitrate, making it light sensitive. It must be quickly exposed and developed in just a few minutes, before the collodion dries and loses sensitivity.

MONUMENT VALLEY, MY DARLING CLEMENTIME, 2013
(THE IMAGES IN THE MONUMENT VALLEY SERIES ARE NAMED AFTER JOHN WAYNE MOVIES)

Traditionally tintypes are very small, but Ruhter, obsessed with exploring the process, has pushed its boundaries. To create the size of tintypes he envisioned, Ruhter converted a delivery van into a giant mobile camera and traveling darkroom. The process is laborious and extremely unpredictable, however, the one-of-a-kind images that result are both ethereal and incredibly detailed, with rich layers of silver that create an almost three dimensional effect. Because the process is produced and controlled entirely by hand, each plate is inherently unique, with the chemicals’ process leaving irregular and ghostly shadows, halos, and ripples in each plate. Another Cup of Coffee? Research Says Yes!

SURFER LAIRD HAMILTON WITH HIS NEW LINE OF COFFEE AND CREAMERS

For years coffee drinkers have been told that their love of the buzz was bad for their health. Studies in the 1970s and 80s showed that the ingredients in coffee were tied to increased risk of cancer and heart disease. It is time now to rejoice! In recent years, researchers around the globe have learned that coffee may not be so bad for you after all, and in fact there are quite a few health benefits in that cup o’ joe. Coffee is…

1. A MOOD BOOSTER
We all know that coffee makes you feel more alert and energetic, but researchers report that those who consume 4 cups a day were 20% less likely to be clinically depressed than those having just one cup. Caffeine stimulates the brain’s release of dopamine for mood and anxiety regulation.

2. A HEART NOURISHER
Several studies have found that coffee fanatics drinking 3-5 cups a day have the lowest risk for cardiovascular disease. Please take note this means plain black coffee. Hold the milk and sugar!

3. A METABOLISM SUPPORTER
Caffeine has been linked with weight loss and prevention of weight gain because it can suppress appetite and stimulate calorie burning.

4. A NATURAL LAXATIVE
If you’re feeling backed up, coffee may be able to help. Many ingredients, namely chlorogenic acid, stimulate the distal colon which helps to quickly rid waste from the body.

5. A CANCER FIGHTER
In early 2015, three studies were published that found coffee to reduce risk of skin, endometrial and liver cancer. The National Cancer Institute published a study showing that people who drank four cups of caffeinated coffee a day had a 20 percent lower risk of melanoma than non-coffee drinkers. An AACR journal found that women who drink four cups a day have a reduced risk of endometrial cancer. U.K. researchers released an analysis of 34 studies conducted around the world and concluded that coffee consumption—even just one cup a day—reduces the risk of liver cancer.

Girl, 17, Cycles Across U.S. in 3 Weeks

RUTH ORKIN IN 1947; THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT PHOTOGRAPHED BY ORKIN IN 1939

In 1939, a 17-year old girl living in California decided to embark on a monumental bike trip across the country. The World’s Fair in New York City was her destination. That girl was award winning photojournalist and filmmaker Ruth Orkin (1921-1985).

Orkin grew up in Hollywood in the 1920s and 1930s, and at the age of 10, received her first camera, a 39¢ Univex. She began by photographing her friends and teachers at school. Obsessed with traveling after three cross country train trips with her family, she took a job as a teenager at a travel agency in 1937. When a pamphlet for American Youth Hostels arrived in the mail one day at work, offering cheap lodging and cooking facilities for travelers journeying by foot or bicycle, the call for adventure was too great to resist.

At 16, Orkin took her first Youth Hostel trip to San Francisco, and the following year somehow convinced her parents to let her bicycle across the country. Multiple newspapers carried the story of this 17-year old on a cross country tour of U.S. Youth Hostels. While she had actually hitchhiked from LA to Chicago, and then Chicago to New York – equally adventurous and kind of crazy — Orkin later wrote in her book, A Photo Journal, published in 1981, “The bicycling was done while I was sightseeing in each city: Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and Boston. I also biked the smaller distances between the four eastern cities and while hosteling through four New England states. All in all I biked a total of 2000 miles during those four months!”

Luxe Fitness Boutique Bandier Is Pumped For More

large-header-1 copy

This story originally appeared on one of our favorite websites, WELL+GOOD, the go-to-guide for all things health, fitness, and wellness!

Apparently, the supply of $145 mesh panel leggings and $75 floral sports bralettes has no end in sight. BANDIER, the fitness fashion boutique that stocks a wide array of luxe workout brands with locations in Southampton and Manhattan, plus a large e-commerce site, just announced three new stores in Manhasset, Dallas, and New York City’s Fifth Avenue.

“There’s definitely a huge demand for activewear in all of these places,” says founder Jennifer Bandier, who turned her passion for fitness (and role as a former music exec for bands like TLC) into a multi-brand activewear concept, where brands like Stella McCartney and K. Deer mingle on racks with Michi and Prismsport. “People are coming in and don’t want to wear one brand from head-to-toe, just like normal apparel. They like that they can come in to our store and mix-and-match curated fitness fashion pieces,” she says.

On October 21, Bandier’s Manhasset store will join Louis Vuitton and Chanel at The Americana Manhasset, which will cater to women on Long Island and its growing boutique fitness scene. The Dallas store, opening on November 6, will also open in luxury retail shopping center, Highland Park Village, making it the first Bandier boutique outside of New York. Something founder Bandier hints could be replicated again in 2016.

New York City Marathon: The Great Race

“THE NEW YORK CITY MARATHON: THE GREAT RACE” AT THE MUSEUM OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK

Now on view at The Museum of the City of New York is “The New York City Marathon: The Great Race”, the first ever exhibition to chart and celebrate the history of this epic race. From its humble beginnings in 1970, when a mere 127 participants ran 4 laps around Central Park, to its current 50,000 plus participants on a 26.2 mile course that winds through the five boroughs of New York City, the marathon is one of the city’s annual highlights for both runners and spectators alike. More than one million people line the streets to cheer these runners on, and are an integral part of the tapestry that makes this event so special.

“The Great Race” brings the marathon to life, telling its fascinating history as both a test of athletic endurance and inspiring example of civic pride and community spirit. An illustrated timeline documents its history along one wall, while at the heart of the exhibition are works by both amateur and professional photographers who responded to the Museum’s open call for images. From several thousand entries, a jury selected 120 photographs of the many sights seen along the 26.2 mile course, captured on devices ranging from cell phones to state of the art digital cameras. The show also features historic video footage of famous finishes, along with lifesize cutouts and profiles of key figures like Grete Waitz, Fred Lebow, and Bill Rogers, perfect for posing with for selfies!

CALL FOR ENTRIES: A SELECTION OF IMAGES FROM THE EXHIBITION

On a personal note, I am proud to say the exhibition is dedicated to my father, James A. Lebenthal, a long time trustee of The Museum of the City of New York and lifelong New Yorker, who was as passionate about the marathon as the city it celebrates. Though he never ran it himself, all three of his kids have mutiple times. For this runner’s view of last year’s race check out the 26.2 Miles of the New York City Marathon. My father passed away about a year ago, and initial funding of the exhibition was made possible by the many donations given to the Museum in his memory.

“The New York City Marathon: The Great Race” opened on Tuesday, October 20, 2015, just prior to the running of the 45th marathon on Sunday, November 1, and will be on view through March 8, 2016. The exhibition is being co-presented with New York Road Runners, the organizers of the TCS New York City Marathon, and the world’s premier community running organization.

Pucci Gets Decked Out

EMILIO PUCCI STREET AND CRUISER SKATEBOARDS

Sport and fashion have collided in a kaleidoscopic collection of Emilio Pucci skateboards, decked out with seven unmistakeably distinctive prints. The Italian fashion house challenged Swiss art and design students at University of ECAL in Lausanne to rethink Pucci’s classic aesthetics, and these vibrant skateboards are the result. Called “Dolce Vita”, this limited edition series features a playful mix of colors and patterns like ice cream cones, pasta shapes, high heels, diamonds, and other symbols of Italian culture.

There are two styles of skateboards, available in seven patterns and accented by colorful wheels. The Street model is a pro style skateboard designed for street and skate park tricks, and the Cruiser, with larger softer wheels, is for everyday recreational riding. All the Pucci boards are crafted with hand-selected hardwood and printed for optimum photo quality, scratch resistance, and durability.

Pucci teamed up with Nowness and director Edward Housden to create a short film, “Rolling with Emilio Pucci” which debuts the skateboard series. The five-minute film features model Martha-Rose Redding, sporting a silk crèpe di chine dress from the 2016 Pilot Resort Collection. She rides the Cruiser Shape as two boys rival her on the Street Shape. Without saying a word, the film articulates the chic and versatile style of the Pucci boards.

The boards are available for €370 (or roughly $420) exclusively at emiliopucci.com while quantities last. Designed for both skaters and fashionistas alike, better get on board fast before they all skate away!

Being Evel

EVEL KNIEVEL IN THE SKYCYCLE X-2 FROM “BEING EVEL”

Long before the “X-Games”, and action sports superstars like skateboarder Tony Hawk and snowboarder Shaun White were household names, there was “Evel” Knievel – a larger than life daredevil who captivated America with his motorcycle feats in the 1970’s. His jumps over multiple line-ups of cars, vans, and buses were infamous, and television rating bonanzas in an era when there were only three stations to watch. In a new documentary released earlier this year, “Being Evel”, we get an entertaining and inside look at the life and times the original “extreme athlete”. Says one of the film’s producers and narrator, Johnny Knoxville, of MTV’s “Jackass” fame, “I didn’t think of him as a daredevil, I thought of him as a superhero.”

The film traces the career of Robert Craig “Evel” Knievel from an insurance salesman some describe as a hustler, to a mega sports entertainer, with action packed archival footage and interviews with family members and those who worked with him along the way. In the era of ABC Wide World of Sports, America was glued to their TV sets each time he jumped, and out of the 10 most watched episodes of the show, Knievel’s jumps are 7 of the most popular. While most motorcycle riders wore black, his red, white, and blue star spangled leather suit and cape made him an American hero.

CAESARS PALACE JUMP AND CRASH

Knievel was legendary as much for his bone breaking crashes as his successful landings, and it was the footage of him crashing after his notorious jump over the fountains at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in 1967, his body bouncing and flip-flopping for 60 yards, that made him most famous. He became national news that day, and lucrative sponsorship and licensing deals followed in an era before that was how athletes got rich. Says Knievel in the film, “Nobody wants to see me die, but they don’t want to miss it if I do.”

Knievel is descibed as insatiable, constantly seeking bigger jumps, more money, and despite being married with a family, more women. The film follows the arc of his career that like his jumps, most notably the Snake River Canyon, went up and came down. The build up to what was truly a crazy stunt was impossible to ignore. Billed as the “death defying stunt of the century”, it was watched by more 2 million people on Pay-Per-View and closed circuit television, but seemed destined to fail from the start. The Skycycle X-2, a steam rocket motorcycle descibed by some a tin can, was to launch Knievel over the mile wide canyon with G Forces of 350 mph, yet Knievel had no training, no parachute experience, and on two test runs the Skycycle crashed into the river. Says Geraldo Rivera, who interviewed him before the jump, “It was the kind of stunt where you would see a guy kill himself. It was so audacious. It was so daring. It was so almost impossible in many ways but for his confidence”.

Being_Evel_still

Rigged with a parachute that deployed early on the takeoff, the jump fizzled and Skycycle dropped slowly into river. Knievel emerged unhurt, but so began his descent both literally and figuratively. He had become belligerent towards the media, who tore him up and it was widely questioned whether this was really a mechanical failure or the “Great Rip-Off of 1974”. He would continue to jump however, taking his act to London’s Wembley Stadium, and finally retiring after his longest jump of 14 Greyhound buses at Kings Island theme park in Ohio in 1975. But it was his maddest act of beating his former press secretary with a baseball bat, after the book he had authorized him to write was published, that brought about his ultimate decline. Sentenced to three years’ probation and six months in county jail, while publicly flaunting his brief incarceration, all sponsorship deals were revoked – cars, houses, money gone. Knievel was eventually forced to declare bankruptcy.

Evel Knievel died in 2007, and despite his ending is still considered an American icon.  For those of us who grew up in the 70’s and remember these televised jumps well, “Being Evel” is a fun look back and interesting view of how the phenomenon that was Evel Knievel all got started. Nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, “Being Evel” is now available on Amazon Video.

OMEGA SEAMASTER BULLHEAD “RIO 2016”

Continuing our COUNTDOWN TO RIO series, a preview of the sports, athletes and gear we will be seeing next August at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, take a look at the Omega Seamaster Bullhead “RIO 2016” watch. This commemorative timepiece celebrates the Olympic games, highlighting the colors of the Olympic rings with its blue leather strap, and yellow, green, red and black stitching. This color theme is continued on the 60-minute rotating inner bezel, designed to reflect the unity and harmony the Olympic rings signify. There is a 30-minute recorder at 12 o’clock, a seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock and a date window at 3 o’clock.

Omega is the “Official Timekeeper” of the Olympic Games and has been since Los Angeles 1932 when 30 stopwatches were used to time the events to 1/10th of a second. From the evolution to photoelectric timing to 1/1000th of a second, automatic start gates, photo finishes, swimming touch pads, and on screen television time clocks — what athletes are accustomed to when competing and spectators when watching the Olympics, have all been a part of the Omega history of sport timekeeping.

Reflecting a piece of this history, Omega first released this style in 1969. Only 316 of the Seamaster Bullhead “RIO 2016” pieces are being produced. Stamped with the Rio 2016 Olympic Games logo on the caseback, this commemorative watch is sure to become a collector’s item.

Best of The Box

CLOCKWISE TOP LEFT: AEROSPACE; OVERTHROW; GOTHAM GYM; SHADOWBOX; CHURCH STREET BOXING; PUNCH FITNESS

Walking around New York City these days it’s not unusal to see a pair of boxing gloves draped over the shoulder of a fashionably dressed woman. Check out Instagram and you’ll see many a fashion model punching it out with her trainer in sweaty style. Boxing has become the hottest workout in town. A slew of new boxing fitness studios opened their doors in 2015, from the spa-like Shadowbox to the nightclub grungy Overthrow. Long established boxing gyms like Gleasons in Brooklyn, which opened it’s doors in 1937, has more new members than ever, particuarly among women.

Fighters are known for their fitness and ripped physiques. Not only does boxing tone muscles and build full body strength, but it’s a major cardio workout, as anyone who has jump roped or hit the heavy bag for 3 minutes straight can attest.  Just one boxing class can burn up to a thousand calories. It’s a sport that requires not just physical but mental discipline as well. Putting together a series of jab-hook-cross-upper cut combinations while bobbing and weaving requires intense focus and concentration, in addition to muscular and cardiovascular strength.

We spent the summer checking out New York City’s hottest boxing gyms, both old and new. Boxing classes in general feature a mix of calisthenics like squats, lunges, jumping jacks and other plyometrics; good old fashioned sit-ups and other ab work; jump rope, shadowboxing, mitt and heavy bag work. Choosing a boxing gym can come down to location. Do you want designer chic or a “Rocky” style gym? Do you want to actually fight or just train like you do? Whether you’re looking to rule the ring or just blow off some steam, we’ve got your guide to all the hot fight clubs in town.

OVERTHROW

9 BLEEKER STREET

“Home of Underground Boxing”, the recently opened Overthrow feels more fightclub than fitness studio, and in fact the space is a former afterhours club and meeting spot for radical activists. Dimly lit with red hues, class at 7:30 am had a been-up-all-night vibe, but packed a punch. Classes are taught by pro and top amateur fighters, who put an emphasis on proper form. The 45 minute Boxing Burnout Class incorporates basic boxing technique, shadowboxing, heavy bag work, set to club thumping, heart pumping music.

SHADOWBOX

28 WEST 20 ST.

Whereas many boxing gyms train you like a real fighter, Shadowbox takes a fitness only approach, and the design of the space is like a boxing spa. Opened last spring, this street level studio offers daily heavy bag classes in a cool dim blue room hung with 40 bags. There is private training as well in a vintage whitewashed ring flooded with natural light. Workouts consist of intense shadowboxing and guided heavy bag work, interval training and body weight exercises, paired with high-energy music for a grueling full body workout. A ringside café serves Intelligentsia Coffee and Kilogram Tea, as well as fresh designer juices. The locker rooms feature full-service amenities and complimentary toiletries by C.O. Bigelow Apothecaries.

Tory Sport

TORY SPORT POP-UP SHOP

Arguably the most anticipated new player in the surging  “Athleisure” market takes the field today. Tory Sport is the new line of athletic wear from Tory Burch, a stand alone brand that is making its debut with a big statement. The line covers a wide range of sport and fitness pursuits, that include running, yoga, tennis, golf, swim and surf, as well as casual pieces for going to and from the gym. Launching with a pop-up shop in Manhattan’s Nolita district, taking over the original Tory Burch boutique on Elizabeth Street, Tory Sport takes the distinctive Tory Burch aesthetic and puts the focus on performance.

Featuring both apparel and accessories, Tory Sport is a chic and elegant take on the sporting life. A lifelong athlete herself, Tory Burch told Style Of Sport, “I was very much a jock growing up. I rode horses, played tennis, lacrosse, and played whatever my brothers did.” Burch still plays a lot of tennis, runs, paddleboards, enjoys hot yoga and spinning. For Tory Sport, functionality has been of the utmost importance from the get go. Said Burch, “We wanted the function to be a given — not necessarily obvious. We spent a lot of time with the inside of the fabric, like taking a running jacket and making it bonded and seam sealed. Quality is super important for us. It’s real function meets style.”

Tory Sport draws from the 70’s sport references with which Burch grew up. “I found I was wearing things from high school that had this retro vibe. “The Royal Tennenbaums” was inspiration, but we wanted to make it modern and do a cool take on that.” A classic pleated pique v-neck tennis dress is crafted from lightweight performance jersey. A running jacket takes vintage varsity style and makes it wind and waterproof, with a hood that zips into the collar. The swimsuits take that graphic swim team style and blend it with quick drying UPF 50 Eurojersey. Patterned and color blocked leggings, tanks and sport bras integrate such technical features as compression, mesh, and reflective detailing — functional details more typical for a sport brand than a fashion line —  infusing classic style with modern performance.

At the same time, what Tory Sport calls “Coming & Going” features casual sporty pieces meant for that transition time pre and post workout. A classic 70’s track suit, pearl covered slip-on sneakers, a merino turtleneck sweater, and a tech knit striped skirt, among other styles, are looks designed to be worn all day.

Paying the same attention to details as the line, the Tory Sport pop up is an integral part of the launch, with a look that is a new take on old country club style. The clean white interior is highlighted by bright canvas cushioned latticework furniture, a graphic surfboard and vintage sport photography. Wainscoting and wide-plank floors create a relaxed and easy setting. There is a monogramming station and vinyl letter press where customers can have select styles—from 70s-inspired track jackets and leggings to wristbands and T-shirts—personalized with their initials. A custom vending machine is filled with vintage sport magazines as well as golf tees, tennis balls, frisbees, water bottles and grip tape.

Tory Sport is available exclusively at torysport.com and at the Tory Sport pop-up shop at 257 Elizabeth St. A permanent Flatiron-district store is set to open in March of 2016.

This Is Not A Basketball Shoe

IT IS MICHELLE WIE’S NEW GOLF SHOE

When champion golfer Michelle Wie hits the links this weekend at the Evian Championship in France, she will be bringing a new look to the course. This self-professed sneakerhead has long been a fan of the Nike Blazer, the iconic high top basketball shoe which first debuted in 1972. Looking for a golf shoe that would reflect her distinct sense of style and shake it up a bit on the fairway, Wie asked Nike to design a variation for golf.

Produced in hot pink with a camouflage Swoosh, and paired with a performance outsole engineered for traction, the Nike Blazer Golf serves both the style and functionality requisites of the athlete. Wie, who wanted to feel more support on her her swing and greater connection to the ground, saw the high top as the solution. As an additional style detail, inside the tongue are the scores from each round of Wie’s unforgettable 2014 US Open victory, her first major win.

Screen-Shot-2015-09-09-at-5.01.28-PM-600x528OH… AND THIS IS HER NEW HAIRSTYLE TOO!

Over the past four decades, the Nike Blazer has evolved to include silhouettes designed for skate, sportswear and, now, golf. The Women’s Nike Blazer from Nike Golf will be available in early 2016 at nike.com and select retailers.

NFL 2015: The 10 Things You Need To Know!

Tonight we kick off the 2015 NFL season with Thursday Night Football! The Pittsburgh Steelers are playing the Superbowl winning New England Patriots, with Tom Brady’s suspension overturned just in time to have him back in the game. Now you may be asking yourself, “Didn’t I see an NFL game last weekend?” That was just a “pre-season” warm-up. Week 1 of the 16 game regular season is finally here and it’s time for the starting lineup to take the field. Here are the 10 things you need to know to sound sassy, sexy and smart should you find yourself in the middle of an NFL conversation…

1. TOM BRADY AND “DEFLATEGATE…

On the field or on the bench? You may have heard that during last year’s AFC playoff game versus the Indianapolis Colts, Tom Brady may have deflated the footballs so that he and his teammates would have a better grip in the poor weather conditions. Originally suspended four games for “general awareness of ball deflation by others”, that decision was recently nullified on the argument it was unfair. A federal judge criticized NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for dispensing “his own brand of industrial justice.” The union had planned to call Goodell as a witness, but was denied that opportunity when Goodell appointed himself as the appeal officer. Which brings us to number 2…

2. NFL COMMISSIONER ROGER GOODELL

Once again the center of football news, for nine years Roger Goodell has sat at the helm of the most popular sport in America. As NFL Commissioner, Goodell is judge, jury and executioner on all things league related. He even gets to hear appeals of his own rulings, and is often is the hot seat as a result of his decisions. You may recall last year’s Ray Rice scandal, when then Baltimore Ravens’ running back knocked out his fiance and dragged her unconscious body out of the elevator of the Revel Casino Hotel in Atlantic City. He was originally only suspended for two games (which makes Tom Brady’s 4 game suspension really bizarre), which was later overturned to an “indefinite suspension.” If you really want to “break the ice” at an NFL viewing party, just ask someone, “Who does Roger Goodell think he is?”

3. RG3 & THE WASHINGTON REDSKINS

Robert Griffin, III or “RG3” as he is known, was the starting quarterback for the Washington Redskins up until a few days ago. Entering his third year in the league, to say his tenure has been polarizing is an understatement. He’s gone from offensive rookie of the year, to fans clamoring for his backup to take the job, to getting injured this preseason, and finally losing his starting job. If you want to sound like you’re “in the know” you might ask “Can RG3 be a starting quarterback again?” Read More

Derek Lam 10 Crosby x Athleta

DEREK LAM 10 CROSBY AT ATHLETA SOHO

Last night the much anticipated collaboration between Derek Lam 10 Crosby and Athleta made its debut at the new Athleta Soho store in NYC. With the booming “athleisure” trend and explosive growth of women’s activewear, Athleta and Derek Lam 10 Crosby saw the opportunity to create a collection that incorporates Lam’s design aesthetic with Athleta’s technical fabrics and fitness expertise. Combining fashion with performance, the result is a minimal but fun, stylish but functional collection of athletic apparel that easily makes the transition from the gym to all day wear.

This is the first designer collaboration for Athleta who saw Derek Lam as the perfect partner to create a lifestyle collection that transcends the gym. Color blocked leggings and tops, oversized striped cashmere sweaters, leather hoodies and track pants, and layered sweatshirts are few of the signature pieces. Said Athleta President Nancy Green to Style Of Sport, “I wanted to do a collaboration with a designer as extremely talented as Derek, and create something that didn’t exist out there.”

“Our customer leads a very active lifestyle,” said Derek Lam. “Fitness is very much a part of it and we always strive to create clothing which works in her life. Athleta’s expertise in performance fabrics and fibers has offered us a really exciting opportunity to create a collection which complements perfectly what we do for Derek Lam 10 Crosby.”

The Derek Lam 10c Athleta collection is available now in select stores and online.

Shopping Birdwell Beach Britches

BIRDWELL BEACH BRITCHES OPENS NEW MANHATTAN BEACH SHOP

In 1961, Carrie Birdwell Mann transformed her small southern California home into a sewing room and store, launching Birdwell Beach Britches. It was one of the first businesses specializing in surf wear, making her living room one of the first surf shops. Her first employees were her husband and son, and her first customers were lifeguards in Newport Beach. These simple nylon board shorts with their quirky “Birdie” mascot would become the staple of Southern California lifeguards and surfers, and establish Birdwell as their iconic heritage brand.

54 years since its founding, Birdwell has just opened its first ever standalone shop in Manhattan Beach, California. Designed by Birdwell’s creative director Natas Kaupas, legendary skateboarder and surf influencer, the Manhattan Beach store is the embodiment of his vision for the brand. The interior’s displays and walls are decorated with art and artifacts from Birdwell’s rich Southern California history and the structural elements used in the space evoke the strength and utility of Birdwell’s purpose built apparel. The shop features a vast selection of Birdwell product, including custom designs and limited-edition styles not available anywhere else.

The calendar may say summer is winding down, but there are still plenty of beach days left for a new pair of Birdwells. The store is located at 1300 Highland Street, Unit 106, Manhattan Beach, CA.

The US Open is in full swing, the last major tournament of the 2015 tennis season. While all eyes are on Serena Williams as she tries to complete the Grand Slam (victories in the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, US Open), standing in her way are the “Rising Stars” of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association). These are the young up and coming players — the future stars of women’s tennis — ready to take on Serena and everybody else.

We had the chance to meet and photograph four of these “Rising Stars” last week at the Connecticut Open: Nicole Gibbs, Ana Konjuh, Karolina Pliskova, and Zarina Diyas. Ever wonder what a professional tennis player eats before a match? How she gets pumped up to play? Who she’d love to see in the stands? What songs motivate her? What she does when she’s not playing tennis? We played 15 Questions with each player, and found out some fun facts!

1. What is your favorite tournament and why? My favourite tournament is Melbourne. I always love to come back there. I love the city and have great memories there.  2. What is your most memorable win and why? Well, I have few of them and every single one is special, but it is always the final of the tournament where I won in my four titles. The special one was probably winning the title at home. 3. What is your favorite thing about playing at the US Open? It’s just the great atmosphere here. A lot of fans coming to cheer and also the city. It’s just great to be here. 4. What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not playing tennis? I love shopping, obviously, like every girl… haha. I also like food, so some good dinners in cities, or watching movies on my computer. 5. How do you get pumped up for a match? I’m always doing my warm up before matches and listening to music. And my coach is also motivating me. 6. How do you relax after a match? I always have some stretching or massage. Then going back to the hotel and rest, and good dinner later. 7. What other sports do you play? I don’t play any other sport, but because of my height I would probably choose basketball. 8. Favorite kind of music? 5 songs on your iPod now? It depends on the mood that day, but my favorite 5 song are: Phototograph by Ed Sheeran,  My Kind of Love by Emeli Sande, Phenomenal by Eminem, Dear Future Husband by Meaghan Trainor, Fast Car by Tracy Chapman.

The Equestrian: Georgina Bloomberg

GEORGINA BLOOMBERG AND “CROWN” AT THE HAMPTON CLASSIC
PHOTOGRAPHS BY DEBBY HYMOWITZ

This Sunday, one of the pinnacle events and grand finale to the Hamptons summer social scene takes place, The Hampton Classic Grand Prix. Always a star-studded affair, it attracts the see and be seen crowd who have come to watch the best riders in the world compete for the $250,000 prize.

Georgina Bloomberg, daughter of billionaire business magnate, philanthropist, and former Mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, is one of the sport’s top competitors and one to watch on Sunday. Thoroughly impressive in her own right, we had the opportunity to meet her earlier this week and discovered the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree. She is fiercely competitive, driven to succeed, and totally committed to the sport.

SOS: How did you get started riding? How did it become this passion? How did it become “Ok… this is my job?”

GB: I started riding when I was 4. My mother is English. She had grown up on horses and wanted me and my sister to take lessons and start riding. My sister started taking lessons and I just wanted to do everything she did so I started taking lessons too. I originally didn’t like it and was actually totally afraid of it, but as soon as I started being able to compete I fell in love with the competition and that part has never changed for me. I wouldn’t ride if I couldn’t show. I’m never going to ride for fun. I’m going to ride at the top level or not do it at all. There is no in-between for me.

_DSC6591

SOS: Wow… that says so much about you.

GB: Yes, I’m very competitive. If I’m going to do something, I want to do it all the way. I go to the barn in the morning and work hard at it so I can go to a competition and win.

SOS: How did you balance riding with everything else growing up?

GB: I grew up in Manhattan. There is less of an understanding of the sport than outside the city where there are closer barns. I was a very rebellious teenager and said “FU” to anybody who didn’t want to take my way. For me it was difficult to balance because my teachers were not so understanding when I had to miss school to go to Florida to compete. So instead of trying to accommodate them more, I just basically gave up on school. Read More

If you love stand up paddleboarding (SUP) and are a yoga enthusiast, why not do both at once? The summer’s hottest water sport is SUP Yoga and with plenty of warm weather left, now is the time to give it a try.

Paddle Diva is the Hamptons premiere stand up paddleboarding school, located in Shagwong Marina in East Hampton, NY, with another outpost at the Surf Lodge in Montauk. Founded in 2009 by Gina Bradley, she has made it her mission to get more women on the water by taking the intimidation out, making it super accessible and most importantly, fun! Classes take place in an idyllic wind protected cove, or on guided tours, with one stop shopping for all your paddle gear. She has a custom line of women’s specific boards as well. Says Bradley, “When I first started, the sport was underserving the female market and my goal was to change that. There were a million reasons women weren’t getting into the sport and I was going to find a million reasons for them to do the sport.”

Bradley has done just that offering multiple classes daily and excursions for all levels. Paddle Diva offers SUP Yoga classes as well, which give students an opportunity to try both stand up paddleboarding and yoga in one session. The first half of the hour long class is paddling instruction, followed by yoga done on the board. Says Bradley, “We are not trying to replicate the studio yoga experience on the water. We are just trying to open people’s mind to a whole new way you can work out. We want to get people out if the gym and into nature.”

With everybody talking about Netflix’s “Wet Hot American Summer”, we’re feeling those old school summer camp vibes. Set in 1981, when 70’s & 80’s style overlapped, it’s a sport meets hippie mash-up of the early era favorites. These late summer pieces may feel retro, but all are new for fall. From bellbottoms, tube socks, cut-offs, poncho sweatshirts, and even your classic Sunfish sailboat, you can take the girl out of camp, but you can’t take the camp out of the girl!

LEFT COLUMN: ABERCROMBIE & FITCH WOMENS FLAP POCKET PLAID SHIRT $58. It’s the classic plaid shirt, great on it’s own or as an extra layer. ONE TEASPOON BANDIT SHORTS $99. Worn in, frayed and with pockets showing, these denim cut-offs are summer favorites. CONVERSE CHUCK TAYLOR ALL-STAR $55. While the Chuck 2’s may be the new kicks in town, the original will never go out of style now available in a rainbow of fresh new colors. PATAGONIA WOMENS BIVY HOODED VEST $179. This plush and cozy hooded vest is constructed with wind and water resistant nylon canvas, insulated with 600-fill 100% Traceable Down, and makes that 80’s style statement with its western style yoke shoulder detailing. TRACKSMITH VAN CORTLAND SHORTS $60. These running shorts may have that retro style, but they are made to perform with a modern update, constructed with a lightweight and luxurious technical antimicrobial mesh.

MIDDLE COLUMN: L.L.BEAN SIGNATURE COTTON FISHERMAN SWEATER $99. This camp favorite fisherman’s sweater has been updated with a shrunken silhouette done in groovy indigo blue. SAILOR KNOT ROPE BRACELET $4.25. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone who didn’t have one of these rope bracelets as a kid. Worn everyday, all day so it shrunk wrapped to your wrist, it’s the must have summer camp favorite! SUNFISH SAILBOAT $3995. Nothing says summer more than the cheerful Sunfish and there is no sailboat more iconic, evoking memories of days spent sailing on the lake and bay. First introduced in 1952 and still produced today, it is the perfect boat for beginners and experts alike, and it’s signature bright striped sail is available in a multitude of colors. AMERICAN APPAREL STRIPED KNEE HIGH SOCK $10. The classic wide striped athletic sock is a sport style staple, and available from American Apparel in all your favorite team colors. OAKLEY KICK BACK SUNGLASSES $210. Shown here in a polarized variation ideal for woodsy outdoor sports, the oversized tortoise aviator frames give that 80’s vibe to the Kick Back.

RIGHT COLUMN: ALTERNATIVE GLOBETROTTER ECO-MICROFLEECE HOODIE $68. This oversized, short-sleeve poncho style hoodie gives some boho style to your average sweatshirt. ADIDAS ORIGINALS 3-STRIPES TEE $30. As seen on “Wet Hot American Summer”, this old school relaxed-fit 3-Stripes t-shirt looks as cute with jeans as it does with athletic wear. MADEWELL FLEA MARKET FLARES $135. The wide leg flare is back and this button front edition features a high rise, fitted hip and thigh, with a sweet rearview, for that ’70s camp and covergirl look.

Surfing Andy Warhol

ART ADVISOR GLORI COHEN WITH 5 OF THE ANDY WARHOL FOUNDATION SERIES SURFBOARDS,
PHOTOGRAPHED IN HER ART FILLED DEAL, NEW JERSEY HOME

In 1967, Andy Warhol moved to La Jolla, California to make the movie, “San Diego Surf”, his homage and twist on the classic surf films of the late 1960’s. Surfboard shaper Tim Bessell was then just a kid, living down the street.

Fast forward to the 1980’s where Bessell was invited to New York by film producer Gary Binko and by chance met Warhol at the opening of the Playboy Club. As it turned out, Warhol and Bessell had a mutual friend, another surfboard shaper named Carl Ekstrom. Famous for his asymmetrical surfboard designs, two had been used as props in the movie. Ekstrom told Bessell if he ever ran into Warhol, tell him he said hello. Little did he realize he would have the chance to do just that!

Spotting him at the opening, standing with a group of models, Bessell introduced himself on a dare. Warhol didn’t surf, but was obsessed and enamored with surf culture. Taken with Bessell and his friends, Warhol invited him to hang out at The Factory and the offices of Interview magazine.

Ironstrength On The Intrepid

DR. JORDAN METZL LEADS HIS IRONSTRENGTH WORKOUT
ON BOARD THE FLIGHT DECK OF THE USS INTREPID

Last night 1,000 fitness fans had the opportunity to participate in one of the biggest bootcamps in NYC History on board the flight deck of the USS Intrepid. The “Ironstrength” workout was led and created by Dr. Jordan Metzl, award winning sports medicine physician at the Hospital for Special Surgery, whose focus and motivation is to use fitness as preventative medicine. “As a physician, the focus of medicine has historically been to treat disease. It is such fun to use the medicine of exercise to prevent disease from happening in the first place”, said Dr. Metzl.

As we wrote about last April in Running Strong, Dr. Metzl is the best-selling author of five books, a 33-time marathon runner, and 13-time Ironman triathlete. Both a doctor and athlete, it is in his role as fitness instructor that he bridges the gap between the two. He created the Ironstrength workout to prevent the sports injuries he sees as a doctor and has experienced as an athlete himself. It is functional strength training designed to keep us healthy and injury free. Full body and plyometric exercises, like jump squats, twisting lunges, jumping jacks, mountain climbers, planks and burpees are go to favorites in the Ironstrength workouts. They are total body moves for total body strength.

Dr. Metzl teaches the Ironstrength workout in various locations around the city twice a month. It is different every time and kind of like a flash mob that descends upon a particular location and disappears when the workout is done. Last night’s mega class, hosted by The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, took Ironstrength to a whole new level and was a dream come true for Dr. Metzl. “Ever since I’ve been in New York, I’ve always thought this would be the coolest place to teach a class. A friend of a friend is the general manager who hooked it up, and with a grant from Johnson & Johnson, we made it happen. It makes me believe in life if you have a crazy idea, just see it through and you can get it done.”

The class was sponsored by Safe Kids Worldwide, a global organization dedicated to preventing injuries in children, the number one killer of kids in the United States.

Katie Ledecky: Swimming’s New Superstar

KATIE LEDECKY AT THE 16th FINA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN KAZAN, RUSSIA

Look out Micheal Phelps, the sport of swmming has a new super hero. Yesterday 18-year-old swimmer Katie Ledecky broke her own world record and won the 800-meter freestyle finals at the FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia, sweeping all of the freestyle events in which she competed. She is the first swimmer in history – male or female – to win four freestyle events at a single world championships. Ledecky will take home five gold medals, individually in the 200, 400, 800 and 1500-meter freestyle events, and with her U.S. teammates in the 4×200 freestyle relay.

What is most impressive is the range of events in which she is champion. From the sprint distance of the 200-meter to the endurance race of the 1500-meter, she dominated. After breaking her own world record in the 1500-meter preliminary event, she broke it again 24 hours later in the event finals – by more than two seconds. Then, just 29 minutes later, she raced in the 200-meter semi-finals. USA Today noted “a long-distance freestyler should not be able to win a sprint. This is a testament to Ledecky’s strength, stroke, kick and smarts.” She turned heads once more in the 800-meter finals on Saturday, breaking her own world record from 2014 and winning by more than 10 seconds.

Since the 2012 Olympic games, Ledecky has broken nine world records in just two years. She is the current world record holder in the 400, 800, and 1,500-meter freestyle. Hailing from Bethesda, Maryland, Ledecky is quickly becoming the most impressive female swimmer of all time. She just graduated from high school in the spring and will attend Stanford University on a swimming scholarship. She will defer enrollment until the fall of 2016, as she’ll focus the next year on training for the Summer Olympics in Rio.

Rio won’t be Ledecky’s first go-around as an Olympian. In 2012, at just 15 years old, she stunned the world when she took home gold in the 800-meter freestyle finals. In what the announcers called “one of the finest swims you’ll ever see,” she was an impressive four seconds – or two body lengths – ahead of the silver medalist, Spain’s Mireia Belmonte Garcia. With the 2016 Summer Olympic Games just about a year away, excitement is already building. One of the big stories and athletes to watch will sureley be Katie Ledecky and we’ll be keeping our eyes on her all the way to Rio!

Chuck Taylor All Star II

WILT CHAMBERLAIN IN THE ORIGINAL CONVERSE CHUCK TAYLOR ALL STAR;
THE NEW CHUCK TAYLOR ALL STAR II HI-TOP

Last week’s introduction of the new Converse Chuck Taylor All Star II was met with excitement, apprehension, and curiosity. Chuck Taylors are an American staple. There is a pair in almost every closet — young and old, rich and poor, famous and unknown. They are the original basketball shoes — the sneakers in which Wilt Chamberlain famously scored 100 points in 1962. One wondered, how could a legendary shoe with such history, popularity, and a dedicated following possibly be in need of an update. Didn’t Coca-Cola learn its lesson in 1985, introducing “New Coke” to such disdain and anger they had to return to the original “Classic Coke”?

Before American iconography and basketball heroes, there was 47-year-old Marquis Mills Converse, who in 1908 opened Converse Rubber Shoe Company in Malden, Massachusetts. Not until 1917 was the All Star basketball shoe introduced, and a few years later in 1921, basketball player Charles “Chuck” Taylor went to work for the company. Taylor became an ambassador for Converse’s All Star basketball shoes. Within a year, his suggestions to change the design of the shoe to provide enhanced flexibility and more support were adopted. In 1932, the All Star signature patch was added to the classic, high-topped sneakers and they became known as the Chuck Taylor All Star.

ALL-STAR-2 LO

Nike bought Converse in 2003 for $305 million cash and the brand has become one of the biggest sources of revenues for the company. Converse sales approached $2 billion in 2015, according to The New York Times. Smart enough to recognize the mistake Coke made replacing a beloved product with a new one, the Chuck Taylor All Star II is simply an addition to the line, and the original is still available.

Pre-Cooling

NIKE PROTOTYPE COOLING HOOD

For U.S. Olympic champion and decathlon world record holder Ashton Eaton, like all professional athletes, every perceivable advantage counts. In the decathlon competition, Eaton seeks to maximize each break between the 10 events to minimize fatigue and be ready to go in the next. Wondering why it felt so good after running to pour a bottle of water over his head, he realized while there may not be a physiological answer, because he felt better, he performed better.

Simultaneously, the Nike Sports Research Lab (NSRL) was exploring the performance benefits of cooling the face. Conclusive evidence of physiological gains emerged — specifically, an understanding of the face’s consciousness and recognition of temperature. It is two to five times more sensitive than other body surface areas. According to a recent post on Nike News, Eaton’s thoughts on recovery in hot conditions, and his desire for an “ice hat”, spurred this collaboration between the athlete, the NSRL and the Nike Apparel Innovation Team. From there, the cooling hood prototype was born.

571d5876aa9222b84d4427234f0a364a_crop_north

“Pre-cooling” is one the the latest trends in sports recovery which involves lowering an athlete’s core body temperature before competition or training for enhanced performance. When exercising in the heat, the body sweats more, which reduces the flow of blood and oxygen to working muscles, making training more difficult. The New York Times first reported on pre-cooling back in 2012. The German World Cup team wore ice vests and sleeves during warm-up and half-time in the 2014 World Cup, and the 2004 U.S. Triathlon Team used ice vests before their races.

According to another recent New York Times article Slushies vs. Frozen Underwear for Hot-Weather Workouts, studies have shown that, in broad terms, pre-cooling works, even in such simple ways as a cold shower or an icy drink. You can exercise in the heat for longer periods of time and at a higher intensity than if you do not first chill out. With the dog days of summer upon us, it is worth giving anything a try to beat the heat!

NFL Hires First Female Coach

JEN WELTER, ARIZONA CARDINALS NEW ASSISTANT COACH
(INSTAGRAM/WELTER47)

The glass ceiling has been smashed wide open with the announcement today of the hiring of Jen Welter, the NFL’s first female coach. Welter will be among seven assistant coaching interns to work with the Arizona Cardinals during training camp and preseason, coaching specifically the inside linebackers. Self-described on her LinkedIn page as “a football playing PhD,” Welter has and continues to make history in the football world.

Welter comes to Arizona from the Texas Revolution, a men’s professional indoor football league team, where she played running back and special teams in 2014. At 5-foot-2, 130 pounds, she became the first woman to play a non-kicking position in a men’s professional football league. She then signed on with the Revolution to work with linebackers and special teams in 2015, making her the first female coach in men’s professional football. Said Michael Strahan, former New York Giant, future Hall of Famer, and co-host of “Live with Kelly and Michael,” this morning, “She has more playing experience than a lot of male coaches out there.”

StaceyG + Milly

A SUMMER DAY IN THE HAMPTONS WITH
MILLY’S MICHELLE SMITH AND SOULCYCLE’S STACEY GRIFFITH

It is starting to feel like Milly month around here! Last week we went behind the scenes at Milly Cabana, and this week we’re back with her t-shirt collaboration with another Style of Sport favorite, Soul Cycle Master Instructor, Stacey Griffith. The StaceyG+Milly limited edition collection of tanks and tees recently debuted and are proving to be the “IT” item of the summer with celebs like J.Lo, Demi Lovato, and supermodel Hilary Rhoda spotted wearing them in both the Hamptons and LA.

Stacey Griffith is undoubtably SoulCycle’s hottest instructor, with an obsessively dedicated following that includes Milly’s Designer & Founder, Michelle Smith. For those who take Stacey’s classes regularly, phrases like “No One Remembers Normal”, “Charge It Hard Like Your Amex Card” and “Can’t Stop Won’t Stop” are just a few of the comedic bits of motivation she throws out during class to keep everyone going full throttle. Says Michelle, “These Stacey-isms are our funny, witty, snarky, spiritual wisdom for the day.”

What began as party favors inspired the collection. Michelle had been making Milly t-shirts for a while and decided to print up a bunch with these inimitable quotes for Stacey’s birthday back in April. Seeing the words in print and with a few A-listers sporting them around SoulCycle, the collaboration was inevitable. With their popularity, more are soon to come and mens tees are on the way too.

Lie Down Paddleboarding

YOUR EDITOR VENTURING OUT ON A BARK COMMANDER AST PRONE PADDLEBOARD

While the popularity of stand up paddleboarding has exploded, a new offshoot of the sport has arrived, which is actually where SUP got its start. Prone paddleboards are now what many of the pros use on the SUP race circuit, and this trend has begun to trickle down to the recreational paddler. Designed to be paddled while lying flat or sitting on your knees, prone paddleboards are like bullets — sexy and fast! No paddle is required, nor is there standing involved. Typically 12 or 14ft, these boards slice through the water with ease and make chop feel like glass. Prone paddleboarding delivers a great endurance workout and can also improve your surfing by strengthening those paddling muscles needed to catch waves.

BARK COMMANDER PRO ELITE

One of the biggest names in SUP, Bark Paddleboards and namesake surfboard shaper Joe Bark, manufactures some of the top prone boards as well.  Shown above is the Bark Commander Pro Elite ($1999/2249), the carbon fiber production model of the winning board for the last seven years of Molokai-2-Oahu — the 32-mile island-to-island World Championship race in Hawaii. Up top, and what I demoed at Island Surf in Westhampton Beach, is the less expensive and more durable Bark Commander AST ($1499/$1699) — ready for those who want to go out and have some fun trying a new summer sport. Ideal for both fitness and racing, the AST features comfortable knee wells and a built in chest rise, so you can max out every stroke. It has a sleek matte finish too, for a cool look both in and out of the water.

The Girls of “Girls” On Girls Bodies

BROOKLYN STRENGTH OWNER, CADENCE DUBAS, AND JEMIMA KIRKE

large-header-1 copy

This story originally appeared on one of our favorite websites, WELL+GOOD, the go-to-guide for all things health, fitness, and wellness!

In March, Lena Dunham posted a photo from her Tracy Anderson workout to Instagram with a caption detailing her longtime struggle with anxiety and how exercise has helped her manage it. “It ain’t about the ass, it’s about the brain,” she wrote about her reasons for working out and its benefits. The post set off a flurry of support, garnering over 100,000 likes and close to 6,000 comments.

It wasn’t a groundbreaking statement, but the sentiment, presented to her fans, was just one example of how Dunham and her Girls co-stars are representing a new kind of exercise zeitgeist for young women, promoting sweat sessions for mental health, balance, strength and confidence—as opposed to a path to getting skinny.

To dig deeper, we interviewed Jemima Kirke, an artist who plays Jessa on Girls, and her Brooklyn fitness trainer, Cadence Dubas. Kirke’s journey started with the challenge of accepting her post-baby body, and she says that only after working out with Pilates trainer and Brooklyn Strength owner Cadence Dubus did she learn to place an emphasis on getting strong rather than skinny, which has taken self body shaming out of her routine.

“As women, we’re taught our whole lives that thin is better, that the less space we take up the better, and that being strong is not associated with being feminine,” Kirke told us. “For Cadence, it’s ‘Strong is feminine.’ Because we need to be strong in our lives and work out for more than just looking good. It’s functional, it improves the quality of your life, so that you can pick up your kids and chase after them without getting winded. It’s about that, not about working out because you ate…fuck whatever it is that you ate!” Read More

Surf Is Where You Find It

Gerry Lopez is one of the most revered surfers of his generation, a legendary wave rider who came of age in the 1970′s, and continues to surf and snowboard with inimitable flair today. Lopez first made his mark on the famous Banzai Pipeline on Oahu’s North Shore, with a laid back style so cool and distinctive, he came to be known as “Mr.Pipeline”. Surf Is Where You Find It is a collection of 38 short stories – tales and revelations told by Lopez about the people, places, and lessons learned during a lifetime of surfing. Originally published in 2008, this revised and expanded 2015 edition is filled with three times as many photos, many of them never-before-seen shots from Lopez’s personal albums. Surf Is Where You Find It shares his memories of surf eras gone by, and commemorates those who helped shape the surfing world of today.

Lopez, in addition to being a surfing pioneer, was also an early practicer of yoga, long before that discipline had the mainstream popularity it does today. We had a chance to chat with Lopez about the book, career highlights, and the parallels between yoga and surfing that made him one of the sport’s iconic figures.

Gerry Lopez-1

SOS: So Gerry…where do I begin with you? There is so much we could talk about! Let’s start with the book, Surf Is Where You Find It. What I think is really fun about the book is that you can jump around from chapter to chapter. They really are short stories and I think everyone will find ones that interest them. For someone who’s not a surfer, what are the lessons can they can learn from this book?

GL: Well in my lifetime, I’ve met a lot of people who never rode a wave, but we share the same consciousness. Surfing is a kind of a state of mind… I mean, it’s a feeling that people have about their life that really, in a way, kind of makes them a surfer. There are a lot of parallels to yoga.

Behind The Scenes: Milly Cabana

CLOCKWISE TOP LEFT: MICHELLE SMITH, AKA “MILLY”, PREVIEWING A ONE-PIECE FROM HER MILLY CABANA COLLECTION WHILE ON VACATION IN CAPRI; MIX AND MATCH BRIGHT SOLIDS AND COLOR TRIMMED BIKINIS WITH INSPIRATION BOARD; MICHELLE, AMIDST HER CREATIVE MESS, IS HER OWN BEST FIT MODEL; FABRIC INSPIRATION; MILLY SKETCHES; BRIGHT CROCHETED BIKINI

Last summer, while photo editing “Models of Influence” by Nigel Barker, I spent a lot of time flipping though old Elle magazines looking for images of the 80’s supermodels. It was there that I found a new appreciation for those sexy sporty Gilles Bensimon pictures of models like Elle Macpherson, Rachel Williams and Famke Jansson, seen through the Style Of Sport lens. I knew my friend Michelle Smith, the Founder and Designer of Milly, would love them too.

Michelle and I are “Soulmates”, getting sweaty together on a regular basis at SoulCycle. But we are also connected by our obsession with those iconic moments in fashion history, a visual language that we share from years spent in the business — me, in editorial and her, in design.

It was, in fact, those 80’s Elle images that became the inspiration for her Milly Cabana swimwear collection in stores in November. Michelle gave Style of Sport an inside peek of what’s to come and shared how a bunch of old tear sheets evolved into this evocative and sporty collection.

STYLE OF SPORT: Alright… so tell me how this all begins. What is your creative process?

MICHELLE SMITH: It starts in two different ways. I start looking at images. I have this vibe in my mind, and I’m also looking at a lot of colors and fabric swatches at the same time. So you’re in my office right now and you see a lot of stuff on the floor that makes no sense (laughs), but to me this makes total sense.  I know where everything is and this is actually really neat for me. When I’m working, when I’m like really into it, my whole floor is covered in fabric and so they kind of feed off each other. Like the fabrics and the colors are feeding off these inspiration images that I’m pulling, and it’s sort of building and creating this look and it’s focusing in on one particular thing. I was really inspired, and I actually reached out to you looking for that essence of the late 80s — Elle magazine, Gilles Bensimon, Elle Macpherson, really active, sporty, healthy, vibrant, gorgeous vibe.

World Cup Fitness

“I want to be known as one of the best ever female soccer players. I want to leave my own legacy and in order to do this, I have to outwork my opponents on a daily basis. Being fit and strong will help me achieve my goals.”

–Carli Lloyd, from Nike Women Presents:U.S. National Team Midfielder Carli Lloyd

Back in May, Nike launched a Fitness Diary followed by Nike+ Training Club workout with Carli Lloyd… before she would go on to become the star of the Womens World Cup, with an unprecedented 3 goal hat trick in the final, and win the Golden Ball trophy for the best player.

NTC_Better_For_It_Challenge_10

“Soccer is a sport that requires you to be agile, quick and light on your feet, so the explosiveness of high intensity training translates really well,” says Lloyd. “Endurance is really important — I have to be prepared to run 90-plus minutes — and the types of drills in my workout will help all levels of athletes build their fitness base.”

It looks like her training paid off, and it can for us too with her workout, Carli Lloyd’s Metabolic Kick High Intensity (HIT) Workout, available on the Nike+ Training Club. (It’s in the Get Focused section). In keeping with her relentless zest for fitness, the workout includes a series of high intensity training moves modeled after some of Lloyd’s favorites, such as Dolphin Push Ups, Split Squats to Jump, and the Cha Cha Shuffle, a fun drill mixing fast feet and lateral hops.

NTC_Better_For_It_Challenge_11_41570

“In the beginning stages of my youth career, I just relied on talent. I wasn’t fully fit and didn’t have the discipline that was needed to make it to the highest level. Every day, you have to train and play as if it’s a World Cup final.”

The World Cup may be over but we can still train like it’s biggest star!

In decisive fashion, Team USA team beat Japan last night 5-2 to win the Womens World Cup, stunning the previous world champions in a rematch of the 2011 World Cup final. The first three goals were scored in the first 16 minutes of play, two of them by Carli Lloyd who scored a total of three goals and emerged as the star of this World Cup with an unprecedented “hat trick.” It was her third goal that was no doubt the most impressive, launched midfield from 55 yards out and just over the head of Japan’s goalie, Ayumi Kaihori. Lloyd won the Golden Ball trophy for best player.

This is the third World Cup win for the American women, the last time being in 1999. That match was one of the most memorable soccer games in history, with players like Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy and Brandi Chastain, who famously whipped off her shirt after scoring the winning goal in the final seconds on a penalty kick. But with stars like Carli Lloyd, Abby Wambach, Hope Solo, Alex Morgan, and Megan Rapinoe, this American team established their own place in history with one of the most dominating wins in World Cup history.

The Wimbledon tennis tournament is one of the oldest sporting events in the world, first played in 1887. It is the third of the Grand Slam events and the only major still played on grass. When the tournament commences Monday, all players will step on to the court in white, as they have done for more than 125 years, adhering the strict traditional dress code of The All England Club. This year’s tournament will be whiter than ever with accent colors being limited to no more than 1 centimeter of trim.

Now we think tennis whites are one of the chicest looks in sport, and no matter the tournament have a winning style that can’t be beat. While we may be bending the rules a little in terms of this year’s restrictions, below are a few of our favorite tennis whites, a number of which will be making their debut on the grass courts of Wimbledon this week.

ABOVE:  NIKECOURT FLARE $200. Look for #1 seed Serena Williams to be sporting this revolutionary new tennis shoe from Nike at Wimbledon this week. It’s the first on-court shoe engineered specifically for this great champion. Offering lightweight stability in a more minimal, low-profile shoe, the extended stretch collar gives streamlined support, extra-durable rubber outsole provides more traction, and mesh overlays add breathability and comfort.

Salt. X Aether

Adventure seekers rejoice! Two very Style of Sport brands, Salt Optics and Aether Outerwear, have joined forces to create a limited edition ultimate function-equals-style sunglass. The collaboration’s two styles, the SCOUT and the EXPLORER, were created with the motorcycle rider in mind, but are sleek enough to be worn by anyone, anytime. These SALT + AETHER glasses have been constructed to deliver optical clarity when engaging in fast, in-your-face activities. And did we mention they are unisex?

Made from lightweight, beta-titanium frames with nearly unbreakable temples, the collection offers two lens options, both polarized to block glare. The first lens option also includes a photochromic filter that automatically adjusts to suit the light conditions. The second includes a scratch-proof mirror coating that increases glare blockage. Both lenses are available in a total of four colorways. Windshields with an extended top frame, inspried by classic glacier glasses, control wind-flow and peripheral sun, and reduce these distracting elements by more than eighty percent.

Good Vibrations

HYPERICE VYPER FOAM ROLLER

The benefits of foam rolling have been well documented for increased flexibility and range of motion; faster muscle recovery; better circulation; and thus improved overall sports performance. The latest evolution of the foam roller adds vibration therapy into the mix, another established recovery technique, and takes the foam roller to a whole new level.

The HyperIce Vyper is the first high intensity vibrating fitness roller. Word is Kobe Bryant was using a foam roller on a Power Plate, the full body vibration machine, which inspired the idea. The Vyper has 3 speeds of vibration powered by a rechargeable 16.8 Lithium Ion battery. Vibration Therapy delivers high frequency oscillations that force muscles to rapidly contract and relax. While foam rollers are the go to recovery tool, adding vibration with the intensity and frequency of the Vyper allows the therapeutic benefits to permeate deeper.

HyperIce is recognized for creating a new generation of wearable icepacks that have become post-workout recovery favorites for such high-profile athletes as Lindsay Vonn, Blake Griffin, and Hope Solo. The Vyper is their second product and is being utilized used by professional and everyday athletes alike to warm up and recover from training and competition.

Fashion-A-Bell: Carmen dell’Orefice

NORMAN PARKINSON & CARMEN DELL’OREFICE FROM BRITISH VOGUE JULY 1959
©CHRISTOPHER & GREGORY HARTLEY

Carmen dell’Orefice is one of the iconic models in fashion history, most famous in her older years for her unmistakable white coiffure. The fantastic image above is from British Vogue, July 1959, and shows her as a young model with renowned fashion photographer, Norman Parkinson. Loving the adventurous “Style of Sport” spirit of the image, we were curious about the story behind the picture.

While Parkinson was the photographer on the shoot in Bermuda, this image was actually taken by Bronson Hartley who ran a local helmet diving operation. Bell or Helmet Diving is a very old concept and the precursor to scuba diving. Using the same principle as a glass turned upside down underwater, water pressure keeps air trapped inside an open-bottomed metal helmet. Fresh air is then pumped in through an attached hose allowing divers to walk around the sea floor, with no training required.

Bronson was an esteemed marine biologist who had first come to Bermuda from New York City in 1930 with his family as a child to escape the Depression. At age ten he built his first diving helmet and continued to evolve his model. His hobby would later become his profession as he began taking adventurous tourists, and later celebrities like Charlton Heston, on the underwater adventure of a lifetime.

Continuing his zeal for invention, Bronson started making his own cameras and underwater housings. A pioneer in undersea photography, he made the first ever color 35mm underwater movie, “Mainstreet Undersea”, starring his wife, Martica, a model and actress. Hartley and the making of the film were featured in the December 15, 1952 issue of LIFE. For those who remember the show, Martica was a guest on “Whats My Line.” Read More

On a steamy summer day more typical of August than June, elite and recreational runners alike took to New York City’s Central Park and bordering Central Park West Saturday morning for the Oakley Mini 10k. I was invited to run on Team Oakley, the sponsor of the race, and decked out in cool Oakley Women gear, I joined the record number of 7,874 finishers. Although it’s called the “Mini”, this morning’s heat made the 6.2 mile race feel more like a marathon.

Founded in 1972 by New York Road Runners, what was then called a the “mini” marathon was the world’s first road race exclusively for women, and featured 72 finishers in its inaugural running. The race got its name from NYRR founder Fred Lebow who convinced sponsors to support a 6 mile “mini” marathon and named it after the miniskirt. It was later lengthened another .2 miles to a 10k race. For those of you who grew up in NYC like myself, you might remember its former name, the “Leggs Mini Marathon” — the title sponsor being the panty hose packaged in the egg shaped container.

Running alongside me this morning were Oakley ambassadors Jamie Anderson, 2014 Olympic Snowboard Slopestyle Gold Medalist, and Olympic Ski Jumper Sarah Hendrickson. Oakley’s new ONE OBSESSION campaign invites all athletes to join the brand’s global network of 450 renowned ambassadors in living out their passions. Always fun having Olympic athletes as teammates and not bad getting to hang out at the VIP tent right at the finish line either!

The Triple Crown

AMERICAN PHAROAH WINNING THE BELMONT STAKES AND THE TRIPLE CROWN

History was made yesterday as American Pharoah became only the 12th horse in history to win the Triple Crown. Ending a 37 year drought without a winner, since Affirmed won the Triple Crown in 1978, jockey Victor Espinoza rode American Pharoah to a victory at the Belmont Stakes. Espinoza had had two previous opportunities to win the Triple Crown with California Chrome last year and War Emblem in 2002. Winning the Triple Crown with American Pharoah, Espinoza also established himself as one of the greatest jockeys of all time as well with this crowning achievement.

To be a Triple Crown winner, a horse (and his jockey) must accomplish the grueling task of winning the Kentucky Derby (1 1/4 mi), the Preakness Stakes (1 3/16 mi), and the Belmont Stakes (1 1/2 mi), all in the same racing season. Only 11 thoroughbreds have ever accomplished this feat since the series began in 1919, when Sir Barton won the first Triple Crown. Due to the longer length of the track and the fresh competition of horses who have not competed in the previous two races, it is very difficult for a Triple Crown contender to win that last race at Belmont. You may remember Smarty Jones in 2004, I’ll Have Another in 2013, and California Chrome in 2014, who were three of the 23 horses who have won at the Derby and at Preakness, but not at Belmont. The last horse to achieve horse racing’s most prestigious honor was Affirmed in 1978. Read More

The Women’s World Cup Kicks Off

FROM THE US WOMENS NATIONAL TEAM:
LAUREN CHENEY, ALEX MORGAN, ABBY WAMBACH, CARLI LLOYD

The men had their turn on the world soccer stage last summer, and now it’s almost time for the ladies to show us how the game is played. The FIFA Womens World Cup kicks off this Saturday, June 6, in Canada, with the best teams in the world competing for one of the most coveted trophies in sport. All games will be televised, and the majority will be shown in the US by Fox Sports 1. CLICK HERE for the schedule and TV listings.

For all you soccer fans, and those who want to know what to know, here’s your SOS Guide to the Womens World Cup:

FIFA Under Fire.

Unfortunately as the tournament begins, soccer’s global governing body, Fédération Internationale de Football Association, or FIFA, has been headline news. Last week, Swiss police arrested several FIFA officials and the US Justice Department charged 14 officials with corruption, bribery, fraud, and money laundering, dating back to the 1990s. The accepted bribes and kickbacks are estimated at more than $150m, including an alleged $10m bribe South Africa paid in exchange for support in its 2010 World Cup bid. Switzerland is also investigating whether FIFA officials were bribed in their selection of Russia and Qatar, respectively, as the 2018 and 2022 World Cup hosts.

Two days after the scandal broke, FIFA’s president Sepp Blatter was re-elected to a fifth term, but on Tuesday he announced his resignation. Interpol (the International Criminal Police Organization) has since filed wanted person notices for six people involved in the Department of Justice’s indictment, and yesterday Chuck Blazer, a former FIFA exec, admitted he (and others) accepted bribes when choosing the World Cup venues in 1998 and 2010. This developing story will surely continue to be the center of conversation as the Women’s World Cup tournament begins.

Now Back to the Game.

This year, the Women’s World Cup will feature a new, expanded format. In the Group Stage, 24 teams will compete in the largest tournament ever. There will be six groups, lettered A-F; the top 16 teams will go on to the Round of 16. The top 8 teams will meet in the Quarter-finals on June 26 and 27, with winners advancing to the Semi-finals on June 30 and July 1. The two teams who lose in the Semi-finals will play in a match for Third Place on July 4, and the tournament will wrap up with the Final game on Sunday, July 5. Read More

Out for a Run: Preppy New England Style

large-header-1 copy

This story originally appeared on one of our favorite websites, WELL+GOOD, the go-to-guide for all things health, fitness, and wellness!

If a fitness fashion brand spent summers on Cape Cod or Martha’s Vineyard, ran track growing up, and wore more J.Crew than Helmut Lang, it would be TRACKSMITH. And if you’re someone who’s more likely to be caught in your dad’s worn-in Oxford than rocking a leather jacket, it might just be the line you’ve been waiting for. The Boston-born activewear brand, which launched a men’s line last summer, is debuting its women’s collection online today (and with a pop up on Boston’s Newbury Street just in time for the Boston Marathon crowds).

Tracksmith has deep roots in the history and tradition of running—and it’s inspired by the classic, New England (and yes, a little bit preppy) style. So their aesthetic is whole different than what you’ll find on Carbon38’s site or at Bandier. Translation: There’s not a pop of neon, mesh detail, or splashy print in sight.

The line is the brainchild of co-founder and CEO Matt Taylor, who has running in his blood. Taylor was a collegiate track runner at Yale, worked as the marketing director of Puma for a few years, and created the wildly popular Usain Bolt mobile app during the 2012 Olympics. Read More

Seeing Fatima’s Eyes

“Seeing Fatima’s Eyes” is the second volume in the Um Yeah series of surf photography books by Thomas Campbell, and holds a collection of images highlighting his time spent in Morocco over the years since 1991. The book follows “Slide Your Brains Out”, the first in the series published in 2012.

Morocco is not a place one immediately associates with surfing, but Campbell is not your typical surf photographer. Transcending the genre and eschewing the typical action shots seen in surf magazines, his images are more of a personal travel journal, focusing on the details of space and time — the landscape, energy, people, and yes, surfers encountered along the way. Moody, evocative and ethereal, his images have an appeal beyond surfing for those who simply respond to beautiful photography taken with a unique point of view.

SEEING FATIMA 9

SEEING FATIMA 3

SEEING FATIMA 10

Morocco marks the southern terminus of a famed European surf pilgrimage: France in September, Spain in October, Portugal in November, across the Strait of Gibraltar to Tangier, and then finally to Morocco for the winter. Campbell found himself on this trail by coincidence. He told Style of Sport, “It was kind of random how I got there. It was the beginning of long period of travel. I hitchhiked across states, and ended up in New York. I spent about a month there and then got a cheap ticket to Europe to go on a skateboard tour around the United Kingdom and Scotland. From there I went to Spain and camped out at Mundaka (Basque Country) for a month and then down to Portugal. I saw the same people surfing in Portugal as I had in Spain, and quite a few were heading to Morocco from there. I didn’t really know about this migration that happens.”

It was a gallery in Morocco that gave Campbell his first solo show. He decided to return there the following year to create the body of work during wave season. As he describes in an interview in the book, “I rented an apartment-house style place. It was a really rustic spot with three small bedrooms, right in Taghazout just inside of Anchor Point. It was $80/mo. Here – at home – I couldn’t even afford to have my own studio. But in Morocco, I could afford to live and work. It was really an amazing time, I kind of let the amount of swell dictate when I would surf or paint.”

Rory’s Special Shoes

When Rory McIlroy tees off this weekend at the Irish Open at Royal Country Down, he will not be be playing for himself but for the Rory Foundation, which raises funds for children’s charities around the world. He announced that if he wins, he’ll give the $638,000 first prize to the Rory Foundation.

He will also let his feet do the talking. During each round of the Irish Open, McIlroy will lace up a different pair of strikingly unique Nike Lunar Control 3 golf shoes, each designed by a child whose life has been impacted by cancer. McIlroy, the Rory Foundation and Nike worked together with the Cancer Fund for Children, a charity in Northern Ireland that provides support to kids whose lives have been affected by cancer, to raise awareness through these NIKEiD designs.

“I’m delighted that the young people associated with the Cancer Fund for Children got to design my shoes,” said McIlroy. “The shoes are really unique with some crazy designs. The Irish Open is going to be a very special event for golf and my Foundation and I am excited to compete in them this week.” These NIKEiD designs can be purchased on NIKEiD.com and a portion of the proceeds will benefit The Rory Foundation.

CLOCKWISE TOP LEFT: Round One: Designed by Sara Lockhart. “I read online that Rory really likes different shades of green so I combined that with some of my favorite colors,” said Lockhart, 12, whose mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Rory’s verdict: “I like the message she’s put on the tongue. She wrote ‘good luck’ on them.”

Round Two: Designed by Ryan Keenan. “I chose the colors because it is for the Irish Open and they are colors associated with Ireland,” said Keenan, 16, whose mom was diagnosed with cancer. Rory’s verdict: “He’s put a little message on the tongue saying, ‘Go Rory,’ so they’re pretty cool for Friday.”

Round Three: Designed by Chloe Hyndman. “I picked black and white to make them look professional, but then added a print to keep them fun and recent,” said Hyndman, 15, whose mom was diagnosed with cancer. Rory’s verdict: “I think these are pretty self-explanatory. You’ve got the little pebble/grain design, which is pretty cool, and purple with a little bit of blue in the laces.”

Round Four: Designed by Alex Kernaghan. “It says ‘Be You’ on my Nike shoes because that’s all you ever should be — yourself,” said Kernaghan, 13, whose father recently passed away from cancer. “I also added in a bit of blue as it’s my dad’s favorite color and yellow to represent the charity.” Rory’s verdict: “Alex has designed these shoes which have basically every color in the rainbow… These are a pretty funky pair of shoes and I’m excited to wear them.”

Summer Surf Flick Classics!

FIVE SUMMER STORIES 1972

Summer has arrived and it’s time for another round-up of great sport flick classics. The beaches are beckoning and the Best of Surf is the theme of this collection. If you can’t make it to the shore, surf’s up at home. So queue up the DVDs and get ready to paddle out, drop in and ride those waves! As always, click the image for a preview trailer.

Let’s lead it off with “Five Summer Stories”, heralded as one of the finest surf movies ever made. This classic features all the great surfers from the 70’s like Gerry Lopez, Shaun Tomson, Jeff Hakman, Corky Carroll and Margo Oberg. Filmed against the backdrop of the Vietnam War and the Nixon years, the movie portrays a young, outlaw sport at a strategic point in its creative evolution.

RIDING GIANTS

RIDING GIANTS 2004

From acclaimed director Stacy Peralta of “DogTown and Z-Boys” fame, comes “Riding Giants”, a multi-generational look at the intrepid surfers who have dedicated themselves to challenging the biggest waves on the planet. The movie features such pioneers and legends as Greg Noll, among the first who dared to enter Hawaii’s big surf in the late 1950s; Jeff Clark, who discovered the massive waves of Mavericks near San Francisco; and Laird Hamilton, considered by many to be the best big wave rider of all time.

SUPER SESSION 1975

Zara Terez

ZARA TEREZ (UPPER RIGHT) AT HER SHOWROOM

Scan the room at most popular boutique fitness and yoga studios like Soul Cycle, Barry’s Bootcamp, and Pure Yoga; online fitness shops like Carbon 38, Bandier, and Net-A-Sporter; and the fitness departments at stores like Nordstroms and Saks Fith Avenue, and you’ll see a vast assortment of crazy prints, bold colors and graphic patterns. The biggest trend in fitness apparel now is printed leggings, and a handful of specialty fitness brands have established themselves as the trendy favorites: Prismsport, Onzie, Olympia, and one of the most popular, Zara Terez.

Zara Terez is the woman behind this burgeoning brand and she is 29 years old. Her wild and whimsical prints like Candy Crush, Mix Tape, Some Kale, Peacock, Pineapple and Emoji cannot be missed. Terez was raised in the fashion business. Her father, who she describes as a “garmento” owned Budget Dress, and was a manufacturer and wholesaler of women’s dresses. Her mother was the owner of All My Favorite Things, a manufacturer of jewelry and accessories in New York. Both are now retired.

Terez originally launched her brand as a leather handbag company, and almost by accident. Stumbling upon a custom leather shop in lower Manhattan in 2008, she asked if they could make a hundred bags of her design. When they said yes, she asked about a thousand. She saw there was a market for cool but affordable handbags. Terez told Style of Sport, “Everything was either high-end designer or mass market, but there was nothing in that $300-400 range. There was also not enough stuff out there that allowed for freedom of expression.” She was determined to make them here as well. “I was going to rebuild the garment district,” she commented with youthful determination, having watched so much of the fashion manufacturing business leave NYC as she was growing up.

Cargo Bike

MADSEN KG271 BUCKET CARGO BIKE
LOAD IT UP: 40 GALLON CARGO PASSENGER BUCKET CAN SEAT FOUR

With cycling having grown in such popularity as a way to commute and get around in everyday life, cargo bikes are now gaining traction as an eco-friendly way for people to transport more than just themselves. As popular alternatives to cars, cargo bikes are popping up in cities and suburbs, transporting groceries, delivering packages and even taking the kids to school. And while once boxy eyesores, cargo bikes have taken on the same sophisticated design aesthetic as other popular bicycles.

Cargo bikes have been quite popular in Europe for many years. Dutch tradesmen first used cargo bikes in the 19th century to deliver their goods before cars were invented. The traditional style of cargo bike, the bakfietsen (which is Dutch for “box bike”), is a normal two-tire bike with a cargo box mounted in front of the handlebars. Another common style, called a longtail, has a longer frame and an extended box over the back wheel.

There are many added features that modern cargo bikes offer. The Xtracycle EdgeRunner, for example, a popular brand in the US, can carry up to 250 lbs, has all weather brakes, boasts a selection of four different colors, and comes in two sizes. Bullitt makes a cargo bike built for speed and Yuba offers an electric cargo bike, the Spicy Curry.

Businesses worldwide are using cargo bikes not only to increase their eco-friendliness, but to also cut costs and utilize a new form of advertising. At select Ikea stores in the Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden, customers can rent a cargo bike to take their purchases home. In Copenhagen, the mail is delivered by cargo bike. The Whole Foods on Third & 3rd in Brooklyn partnered with People’s Cargo to create a custom solar-powered bike that includes a cooler for delivering groceries. United Parcel Service (UPS) has experimented with bike delivery in Rhode Island and Oregon. Cargo bikes are even being used in Sao Paulo, Brazil as “pop-up public squares”. If you don’t own a cargo bike, you can even rent one from online sites such as Spinlister.

If you’ve adopted cycling as your preferred mode of transportation, the cargo bike is the next step in the evolution of your pedal power.

Comprised of custom handmade surfboards, and made in USA apparel, it could be called “Woods and Water,” as the collection unites the heritage of Woolrich, the Original Outdoor Company, and the coastal lifestyle of California’s Almond Surfboards.

The clothing, which includes both men’s and women’s pieces, was designed for a perfect day at the beach. The “Wax and Wool” collection includes graphic tees, blankets, a tote bag, henleys, sweatshirts and corduroy walk shorts. Also included in the collaboration are custom Woolrich inspired surfboards. Custom built and hand shaped by Almond, the boards feature prints inspired by the iconic Woolrich buffalo check.

Each piece reflects the different backgrounds of these two brands, yet common appreciation for timeless, quality goods.

The Fight Of The Century

FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR. AND MANNY PACQUIAO

In what is being billed as the “Fight Of The Century”, tonight Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. will finally square off in one of the most anticipated championship fights in the history of boxing. While you may not care about the sport, it is certainly the topic of conversation. Here’s the who, what, when, where and why you need to know to make you sound like a boxing fan. You might even turn a few heads with your new found expertise!

WHO: Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao… aka “MONEY” and “PAC-MAN

Floyd Mayweather Jr., who hails from Grand Rapids, Michigan, is the undefeated, 11-time world champion boxer who was named by Forbes as the highest paid athlete in the world in 2014. With a win on Saturday, he is just one more win away from tying famed Rocky Marciano’s all-time record of 49-0. Outside the ring, Mayweather doesn’t have a shiny record however. He’s faced seven assault charges, serving two stints in jail, as well as other incidences with domestic violence, probation violations, and defamation claims.

That’s why we’re rooting for Manny Pacquaio. Pacquiao is also a world champion professional boxer who is a native of the Philippines. He has some interesting part-time gigs including Philippine Congressman and head coach of the Kia Sorento basketball team. He even played seven minutes in one of his team’s game, adding professional basketball player to his resume. His experiences and enthusiasm outside the ring are inspiring.

Rumor has it that Mayweather is “allergic to southpaws” – southpaw is a boxing term for a left-handed fighter, so Pacquiao’s left-handedness could be the key to his success. Oscar De La Hoya, who lost to Mayweather, told the Wall Street Journal: “Mayweather has never fought a lefty who moves in and out, side to side like Pacquiao.” Though Mayweather is heavily favored to win, you’ve always got to believe in the underdog.

WHAT: The most lucrative fight… EVER

Mayweather and Pacquiao have agreed to split the nearly $300 million purse 60-40. Some sources have projected as much as an additional $400 million in revenue. Though the exact details of the monetary agreement between the two boxers haven’t been explicitly revealed, we do know that it will be the most profitable match in history.

Running Strong

IRONSTRENGTH WORKOUT CENTRAL PARK 6:30 AM.
CLOCKWISE TOP LEFT: JUMP SQUATS; DR. JORDAN METZL SHOWING FINE FORM ON HILL SPRINTS; MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS; SKIPPING DRILLS

If you live in Manhattan, Dr. Jordan Metzl is one of those doctors everyone seems to know. If you, or your kids, have had a sports injury, chances are they’ve seen Dr. Metzl or been advised to at least. That’s how I know him myself. A nationally recognized physician, who practices at the acclaimed Hospital for Special Surgery, Dr. Metzl is selected annually by New York Magazine as one of New York City’s top sports medicine doctors. He is equally well known as a competive runner and tri-athlete, with 32 marathons and 12 Ironmans under his belt. For those who don’t know what an Ironman is, it’s a mega triathlon that consists of a 2.2 mile open water swim, a 112 mile bike ride and THEN a 26.2 marathon.

Dr. Metzl now adds fitness instructor to his roles as sports doctor and athlete, and it is here that he acts as a liason between the two. His workout program “Ironstrength”, which he teaches in various locations around the city twice a month, is now available on DVD, and new book Running Strong, are preventive guides to the sports injuries he sees both as a doctor and athlete himself. Ironstrength started as a class of 20 people and now has an invite list of about 7000. It’s different everytime and in a variety of locations. The class is kind of like a flash mob that descends upon a particular location and disappears when the workout is done.

As an athlete, there is nothing worse than being sidelined by an injury, which Dr. Metzl knows first hand. A torn ACL in college took him off the playing field, and it was the knowledge he gained rehabing that injury with “functional strength training” that he shares with his patients, class participants and readers. Both the Ironstrength workouts and Running Strong are guides to functional strength training designed to keep our bodies healthy and injury free. These are full body exercises that mimic movements performed in everyday life — not lying on your back and pushing heavy weights. Plyometrics and functional strength exercises like jump squats, twisting lunges, jumping jacks, mountain climbers, planks and burpees are go to favorites in the Ironstrength workouts. They are total body moves for total body strength.

IMG_0357SIDE PLANK

Running Strong is geared towards all levels of runners, from the those just getting out on the road, to competitive athletes looking to increase their speed and mileage. Accompanying videos of the various exercises prescribed are included, along with “virtual visits” to Dr. Metzls office where he explains the anatomy of an injury, how to rehab it and prevent it from recurring. These videos can be accessed via a link in the e-book and with a smart phone app in the printed edition.

These exercises and the Ironstrength workout are not easy. Says Dr. Metzl, “I want you to work hard and set the bar high for each exercise. But I also want you to approach it from your leval of fitness. If you need to do fewer reps fine. Adjust the workout to your leval of fitness and build as you get stronger.” Each exercise can be modified as well for those wanting a more or less strenuous workout.

As much Dr. Metzl likes seeing patients, his goal is to keep us out of his office by building strength in those muscles needed to support the rigorous activities like running that we rely on our bodies to perform. His next objective is teaching other healthcare professionals and doctors how to prescribe exercise for their patients as well.

The Finest Line

Once on the fringes, big wave surfing has moved into the forefront of the sport of surfing with a generation of surfers riding waves of unfathomable height and magnitude, and reinventing the limits of what is surfable. The Finest Line is a photographic foray into the world of big wave surfing and the first book to look at this subculture as a whole.

Written by Rusty Long, professional surfer, journalist, photographer, and one of the biggest names in big wave surfing himself, The Finest Line takes us around the world, from one legendary wave to the next, with breathtaking images and awe-inspiring stories of hallmark sessions from such breaks as Maverick’s, Jaws, Cloudbreak, Teahupo’o, Belharra, Nazaré, Shipsterns Bluff, Dungeons, and Puerto Escondido. The book also includes interviews and insights from many of the leading surfers of this era, including Mark Healey, Greg Long, Grant “Twiggy” Baker, Mike Parsons, Peter Mel, Dave Wassel, Kohl Christensen, in addition to a foreword by famed surfer Tom Carroll.

In the introduction, Long shares how from just after the turn of the century until 2014, big wave surfing has risen to completely new heights. Feats that were once very rare, like paddling into fifty-foot plus waves, have become normal. The introduction of the Jet Ski was perhaps the biggest factor in assisting big-wave progression. Tow-in surfing pulled surfers on to waves too big to paddle into. Surfer Laird Hamilton rose to prominence during this era, along with Buzzy Kerbox, Darrick Doerner, and Dave Kalama, who shattered boundaries with the Jet Ski assist, and redefined the way surfers could approach and ride giant waves. The tow-in surfing boom around the millennium, most prevalent at Jaws on Maui and Maverick’s off Half Moon Bay, California, opened the door to the pioneering of many other waves. Waves considered unrideable or even unapproachable, like the giants at Teahupo’o in Tahiti and Shipsterns Bluff in Tasmania, became rife with chargers yearning to be towed into the craziest waves possible.

What is the best way to test out the staying power of your makeup? In an inspiring new campaign, makeup artist Bobbi Brown called in four professional female athletes put her new sweat-resistant, waterproof “Long-Wear Life Proof” eye-makeup line through the paces. Her roster includes surfer Kelia Moniz, alpine ski racer Julia Mancuso, snowboarder Hannah Teter, and BASE jumper Roberta Mancino. A short YouTube video series, called #LONGWEARLIFEPROOF, shows each athlete in action, captured via GoPro, looking gorgeous and smudge-free while surfing, skiing, snowboarding and sky diving. Bobbi Brown told The Huffington Post that these four extreme athletes have taught her that “beauty is about so much more than makeup; it’s about strength, confidence and courage, and that what you put in your body is just as important as what you put on it.”

The impressive campaign brings the products to life, and shows that no matter the woman, the sport, or the conditions, the last thing these fearless females should have to worry about is their makeup.  Says Hannah Teter, “I may be an extreme sport athlete, but I still want to look pretty out there on the slopes”

W.O.W! Nigel Barker & The DogPound

GUN SHOW WITH THE DOGPOUND!
FROM LEFT: DAWIN PENA, NIGEL BARKER, ME, KIRK MYERS, BREY PENA

In our WOW (Working Out With) series, yours truly goes head to head with a person of note, in the gym or some other sporting arena, to sweat a bit and talk about what’s up. For this installment, I connected with renowned photographer and fashion television host, Nigel Barker, at Gotham Gym in NYC to work out with his crew, known as the DogPound.

Nigel and I met in 2014 and got to know each other well working on his newest book, Models Of Influence, of which I was the photo editor. Published in February 2015, the book is retrospective of 50 of the most influential models in fashion history and the iconic photographs that defined them. Decade by decade, each chapter spotlights an era, and highlights the “50 Women Who Reset the Course of Fashion.”

Known well for his 17 seasons on “America’s Next Top Model,” Nigel was most recently the host of “The Face,” and is regularly featured on other television shows as the go-to fashion authority. A highly regarded photographer, filmmaker, philanthropist, and author, Nigel is no slouch in the gym either. Six days a week at 5:45 am sharp, he works out with a group of about 15 other guys and 3 very large trainers — Kirk Myers, Dawin Pena, and Brey Pena — aka the DogPound.

The group was originally assembled by actor Hugh Jackman, and includes various other captains of industry and a few Olympic athletes as well. The name “DogPound” is an homage to “Dali,” Jackman’s French bulldog, who presides over all workouts. The group meets every morning to “smash it,” their signature expression for crushing everything from weightlifting, high intensity interval training (HIIT), and literally smashing things — boxing, hammer drills, hitting drills, ball slams and throws. I got a taste of it, pushing a 200 lb. tire back and forth with Nigel, along with a sampling of other DogPound favorites. A little stomach bug kept me from going full out, but even a shortened session left my heart pumping and eager for another round with the DogPound! After our workout, we talked fitness, fashion, and Models of Influence.

Take Me Out To The Ballgame

IT’S MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL OPENING DAY…

…and the official start of another season of America’s favorite pastime! It’s hard to find someone who doesn’t appreciate what makes the game so special… a sunny day at the ball park, or an evening game played under the lights; hearing that crack of the bat and the cheers of the fans echoing in the stands. Even the healthiest among us can’t resist a hot dog, peanuts, and an ice cold beer. It’s a game of tradition and nostalgia, and most of us love watching the game even if we don’t know anything about baseball. It’s made for the fans.

Wouldn’t it be even more fun if you had a few insider tips and knew a bit of trivia about the game and the season to come? Here are the top “9 Things You Need To Know” for the 2015 season. That’s one for each inning, of which there are 9. We assumed you knew at least that.

Toronto+Blue+Jays+v+New+York+Yankees+pd81TSUaaIsl

1.A-Rod is back

New York Yankee Alex Rodriquez makes his return to baseball after being suspended for a year for using performance-enhancing drugs. Baseball’s bad boy accepted his 162-game suspension for doping, which kept him off the field the entire 2014 season. The suspension, the most severe punishment in baseball history, is said to have cost A-Rod $25 million in salary. Rodriguez may be the man you love to hate in baseball, but games are more exciting with him in the lineup. We hope he has a good season. Everybody loves a comeback!

Jeter is not copy

2.Derek Jeter is not

Yankee fans are still recovering from Derek Jeter’s retirement after a fairytale farewell season. Number 2 hung up his cap and his number is being retired too. Relive one of his most memorable plays HERE and then get ready for a new era of Yankee baseball. Their new shortstop, Didi Gregorius, has some big cleats to fill! While he’s more known for his glove than his bat, Gregorius had a great spring at the plate, and has fans looking forward to his first season in the Bronx.

EBBETSFIELD

3. Uniform style

Most teams have gone traditional in recent years and have multiple variations of their home and away uniforms (the better for merchandising, of course). The Oakland A’s are taking #ThrowbackThursday pretty seriously. At every Thursday home game, the A’s will honor their franchise by repping throwback uniforms and giving away commemorative buttons to the first 5,000 fans.

Our favorite uniforms are still the originals though, many of which are available at EBBETS FIELD FLANNELS. Their authentic wool flannel baseball jerseys, caps and jackets are identical to the originals in fabric and craftsmanship, and have been recreated using the original materials, lettering, sleeve patches and trim.

Game time is 6:09pm on Saturday, April 4th. The next game is No. 1 Kentucky vs. No. 1 Wisconsin at 8:49pm. The Wildcats and the Badgers will meet in a rematch of last year’s Final Four pairing. Kentucky enters the game undefeated for the season.

ClassPass

Back in January we ran a monthlong fitness feature, “The 31 Days of Fitness”, taking a different class everyday and sampling all the workout options available a la carte. Our goal was to showcase the plethora of boutique fitness studios offering specialty spinning, yoga, bootcamp, pilates, boxing, rowing classes and more, on a pay-per-class basis. ClassPass unites them all into one monthly gym membership with access to the most popular boutique fitness studios — many of which we included in our 31 Days. Barry’s Bootcamp, Flywheel, AKT In Motion, Aerospace, CityRow, Exhale, Physique 57, Flex Studios, and Mile High Run Club are just a few of the hundreds of participating studios.

The average price of a class at the most popular boutique fitness studios is around $30 depending on the package purchased. If you are working out regularly, say even the prescribed minimum of 3 x per week, this can cost as much in a week as a month at a gym. A ClassPass membership runs from $79 – $99 per month depending on the city. Members have unlimited access to all participating studios, but are limited to taking 3 classes at the same studio each month. ClassPass is available in 31 U.S. cities as well as London, Toronto, and Vancouver, and users book their class reservations through the ClassPass app.

With summer on the horizon, Spring Training is now in session. It’s time to shed those winter coats… and coatings. ClassPass offers a huge variety of great workout options all for one affordable price. No more excuses!

NikeLab x Sacai

Now available at Nike.com, NikeLab stores and select specialty boutiques like Dover Street Market, is the eye-popping NikeLab x sacai capsule collection. NikeLab is the most fashion forward division of Nike, recreating its iconic sport pieces as streetwear. Fashion label, sacai, has been referencing and reinterpreting traditional sportswear the last few seasons with its own unique approach. The two were brought together by a shared passion for innovation and a bold expression of style resulting in a new women’s collection that transforms classic performance icons into fashionable sport hybrids.

Nike’s design ethos celebrates the body in motion, which was very much in sync with sacai’s vision for the line. Sacai Founder, Chitose Abe, began her design journey by mining the Nike archives and pulling references from running, tennis and American football, reinterpreting Nike’s heritage sportswear silhouettes. Through Abe’s language of surprise and juxtaposition, the classic Nike Windrunner becomes a skirt featuring plissé-style pleating. A hooded sweatshirt is trimmed with a peplum detail. Panels combine with strategically placed openings and underlays to create fluidity when the garments are still or in motion, playful as the wearer turns from front to back.

NIKE-X-SACAI-2

The shared appreciation for innovative materials and technology was paramount to the Nike/sacai design process. The partners explored different ways to utilize the materials at hand and also establish exciting new fabrications. A special mesh lace hem was specifically developed by Nike and Abe to adorn the trim of graphic Nike T-shirts. March Madness: 10 Things You Need To Know

March Madness has officially begun and it’s the hot topic of conversation everywhere. Kicked off at Selection Sunday last week, the 68 teams have been named to compete in the 2015 NCAA Divison I Men’s Basketball Tournament. The “First Four” qualifying round starts March 17, 18, with 8 teams battling for 4 remaining spots, and then it gets going for real Thursday, March 19! If college basketball is not your area of expertise, here are The 10 Things You Need to Know to get in on the conversation!

1. What the heck is bracketology?

When people say they’re “filling out their bracket,” they mean that they are predicting the winner of each game. The odds of picking a perfect bracket are 1 in 9 quintillion.  In fact, it’s so improbable that last year Warren Buffet offered $1 billion dollars to the person able to pick the winner of all 64 games. This years bracket is above.

2. First is certainly not the worst.

There are 4 regions and the No.1 seeds for each are Duke, Villanova, Wisconsin, and Kentucky.

3. Kentucky is looking to make (more) history.

The Wildcats finished the regular season at 31-0 and are only the fourth team ever to go into March Madness undefeated. With 8 national titles under their belt, Kentucky is second to UCLA on the list of most NCAA Tournament Championships.

4. The Big Dance isn’t a performance at halftime. College basketball fans commonly refer to the NCAA Tournament as “The Big Dance” and when a team is selected to play in it, they are said to be “going dancing.” Impress your friends and colleagues by knowing that the term was coined in 1977 by Marquette coach Al Maguire.

5. Krzyze-what?

Duke’s head coach, Mike Kryzewski, is known as “Coach K” for short. With Duke’s bid to this year’s tourney, Coach K becomes only the 3rd coach in college basketball history to make it to 20 consecutive NCAA Tournaments.

Shaun Tomson Drops In

SHAUN TOMSON DROPPING IN AT PIPELINE ON HIS ZIGZAG HAWAIIAN GUN. PHOTOGRAPH BY JAMES CASSIMUS, 1983;
RIGHT: REPLICA OF THAT BOARD NOW ON AUCTION

Recently on eBay was a one of a kind replica of legendary surfer Shaun Tomson’s 7’7” 1983 Zigzag Hawaiian Gun. The proceeds of the auction went to benefit the Santa Barbara Boys & Girls Club for which the surfboard was created by Tomson, who lives in Santa Barbara, Ca. and serves on its board of directors. The theme of the auction was “Back To The 80′s”, and Tomson collaborated with Hawaiian shaping master Bill Barnfield, who originally shaped this and many more of his boards, to reproduce this iconic 80′s classic. The board was painstakingly recreated from recently discovered design templates by Barnfield, and featured an airbrushed design by the original artist Suzi Gillette. The neon colors and slash graphics represented the quintessential look of the surfboards from that era.

Shaun Tomson is recognized as one of the greatest surfers in the history of the sport. Born in South Africa, he came to Hawaii in the mid-70’s and made his presence known on the waves before surfing was a professional sport and you were paid to surf. “Bustin’ Down The Door”, a large format photography book and documentary he wrote and produced tells the story of his arrival on the North Shore of Oahu in the winter of 1975 with Australian legends Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew, Mark Richards and Ian Cairns, surfing the waves of Pipeline, Sunset, and Off the Wall. They proved their skills and prowess with a radical new approach, brazen attitude and unique style that garnered much attention, and were the pioneers of modern day surf style, culture and industry.

I had the opportunity to speak with Tomson earlier this week about his involvement with The Boys and Girls Club, and the board he and Barnfield created for this year’s event. The board was originally designed specifically for surfing the famed wave, Pipeline. I asked him what is it about this wave that makes it so notorious. Read More

Get Pumped

CUSTOMIZED REEBOK ZPUMP FUSION

It’s been 25 years since Reebok first released “The Pump”, considered an icon in the annals of sneaker history. Originally a basketball shoe, it contained an inflatable chamber that could be pumped with air via a mini ball valve on the tongue.

Reebok has resurrected this 80’s classic with updated technology in the recently released ZPump Fusion, its new running and training shoe. Made to adapt to the contours of the foot, a lightweight inflatable chamber surrounds the foot. The pump actuator has been moved to the ankle. When pushed it channels air into the chamber, which expands and molds around the foot for a locked-in fit. The shoe features a sock-like construction with a seamless 360-degree stretch compression sleeve and boasts high-speed, underfoot performance and control with its grooved outsole. The ZPump Fusion is also customizable and can be designed with colors and graphics of your choosing as shown above.

FREEZY FREAKIES: DESIGNS ARE REVEALED ONLY IN COLD TEMPERATURES
AS SEEN ON THE RIGHT GLOVE

For all you big kids who grew up in the 80’s, nostalgic for the pop culture style trends of your youth, Freezy Freakies are back! For those who have no idea what we’re talking about, Freezy Freakies were the color changing gloves many of us wore as kids, that are now available for the first time in adult sizes. Made with thermocromatic ink that is transparent in warm temperatures, the colorful designs on the Freezy Freakies gloves are only revealed in cold temperatures.

Four popular original designs — Unicorn, Turbo, Ski Alpine and Fighter Jet — are being produced once again, but for big kids, i.e. grown-ups, only. They now boast updated performance features like a soft microfleece lining and toasty Thinsulate™ midlayer. They are available in a limited edition so don’t miss out on this blast from the past. Plus, Freezy Freakies give you a reason to like the cold, which is good because it’s March and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere.

Zen Came Tulum

There are not a lot of people who could convince this non-yogi to go on a yoga retreat but when Halle Becker — one of the things I wrote I did not hate in “The Six Things I Hate About Yoga”– told me she was leading one with Loren Basset in Tulum, Mexico, I booked my spot before you could say “ohm”.

Past the line-up of all-inclusive resort complexes on the Mayan Riviera is the still unspoiled stretch of beach of Tulum Mexico, an eco-chic holiday destination that has long been a mecca for yoga retreats. The resorts there are made up of beachfront thatched roofed huts and open air palapa studios that are the dream settings for any yoga class. Our retreat would be at the Amansala, a longstanding favorite and home of the “Bikini Bootcamp“. A yoga vacation would be a better description than retreat, because although the meals were filled with deliciously fresh and healthy offerings, we would not be retreating from such guilty pleasures as chips, guacamole and margaritas. And while there was a 2 hour yoga class in the morning and 1 1/2 hour class in the afternoon, I opted for my own one class a day plan, which for 5 days in a row was more yoga than I practice in a month.

Halle Becker and Loren Basset have been friends for 8 years. Halle was originally Loren’s student at a studio called “Some Like it Hot.” I know them both from Pure Yoga. On a whim, they decided to organize a retreat 4 years ago. The first year had 16 people who they begged to come and they hosted it at the remote Holbox Island resort in Mexico. Their second retreat was at Amansala, where it has been ever since, and by chance that year Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, Reece Witherspoon, and Demi Moore happened to be staying. They joined Halle and Loren’s classes for fun, which you can only imagine was off the hook. The retreats have grown in size each year and been sold out ever since. Read More

A Decade of Adidas by Stella McCartney

ADIDAS BY STELLA MCCARTNEY STORE, AVENTURA MALL, MIAMI

Just opened in Miami’s Aventura Mall is the new Adidas by Stella McCartney store, their second stand alone store in the US. It features the new Spring/Summer 2015 capsule collection which marks the ten-year anniversary of the collaboration between Stella McCartney and Adidas. The brand has become synonymous with the “Ath-Leisure” category of the fashion market, and the booming 35.1 billion activewear industry that now represents 17% of all apparel sales.

From Run to Yoga to Swim, Stella McCartney calls the new line “a combination of strong design aesthetic with true performance technologies”. It utilizes Adidas’s trademark fabrics like Techfit (bands which offer compression and stability,) Climachill and Climacool (temperature control to ensure maximum performance) and BOOST footwear (an innovative foam storing thousands of energy capsules for reactive cushioning.)

CLICK ABOVE TO WATCH KARLIE KLOSS IN ACTION

Last week we were in Vail/Beaver Creek, Colorado for the World Ski Championships. This week we are back in our home turf of NYC for New York Fashion Week. A video popped into our email feed from Vogue this morning, filmed with a GoPro, and capturing an action packed day in the life of supermodel Karlie Kloss. It shows this gorgeous model, at the top of her game, from dawn til dusk, on a typical NY Fashion Week day.

GoPro cameras are noted as hi-def action cams, usually employed by adrenaline junkies, looking to immortalize their extreme pursuits. We thought we’d share a more typical Go Pro video we saw last week of skier Julie Mancuso, a supermodel in her own right, on her typical day, capturing a different kind of action. Julie was at Vail at the World Championships competing in both the speed and slalom events, and “modeling” her new signature line of POC goggles, sunglasses and helmet in competition. A decorated Olympian, she has won the most medals of any female alpine skier, with a gold in the giant slalom at the 2006 Winter Olympics, a silver in both downhill and combined (downhill & slalom) in 2010, and a bronze in the combined in 2014. When she’s not on the slopes, Julie is on the waves paddling and surfing, splitting her time between Squaw valley and Hawaii. Check out this “Wonder Woman” in action.
