Tom Adler publishes beautiful photography books. I own almost all of them. They are limited edition gems that visually chronicle the culture of surfing through the eyes of a particular photographer like Don James, Jeff Divine, or Ron Church, or though a particular surfer like Miki Dora or Tom Blake. His books are curated like time capsules, and designed to appeal not just to surfers, but anyone who appreciates beautiful books, photography and design.

Tom Adler also designs and publishes beautiful books on climbing. A couple of years ago, I stumbled upon “The Stone Masters”, a gorgeous coffee table book on the California climbing scene in 70’s. I was surprised to see it was a Tom Adler book. Like his surf books, it was distinctive in its design, but I had no idea his passion for the culture, photography and visual history of sport included climbing. This was not his only book I learned on the subject. There was also “Yosemite In The Sixties”, a compilation of magnificent black and white photographs by Glen Denny, capturing the famous climbing scene of Yosemite Valley’s Camp 4 in its heyday. It left me wondering what the connection was for him with these two sports. Read More

Olympic Patchwork

The 2014 Winter Olympics are fast approaching and I had an exciting Olympic moment of my own last week getting to try on one of the official US Olympic Team snowboard jackets created by Burton Snowboards. This is the third consecutive Olympics that Burton has partnered with US Ski & Snowboard Association to create the US Snowboard team uniform. They once again looked to American heritage for inspiration, choosing the patchwork quilt and the American flag.

Burton designers found their perfect vintage quilt at an antiques fair and brought it home to Vermont where it was deconstructed and re-constructed by a veteran Vermont quilt maker, who created the design that would be replicated onto the outerwear. The end result is a jacket that looks like it was hand-stitched with patchwork squares and no two jackets are alike. A duplicate of a vintage American flag is proudly featured on the jacket’s sleeve.

With the design inspiration in place, technical performance came next. Burton turned to the US Army RD&E Center to research and develop a new DRYRIDE Vaporshell laminate, which is being showcased for the first time in the Olympic Competition Jackets. Sochi is known for its unpredictable weather, and this waterproof breathable fabric has been created to stand up to anything Mother Nature decides to dole out. The corduroy that was chosen for the pant fabric, another staple of American heritage, has been weatherproofed with the same laminate. Water literally beads and rolls off it.

To round out the look, Burton also designed all items that will be worn under the jacket and pants, including first-layer bottoms and tops, three different beanies, gloves/mitts and a cozy wool/silk blend competition pull-over fleece. All are slightly reminiscent of items you might find in a New England country store. “We’re really proud that the 2014 uniform builds on Burton’s legacy of creating fun, unconventional designs that stray from the formal, traditional look of most uniforms,” said Greg Dacyshyn, Chief Creative Officer at Burton Snowboards. “The vintage quilt and flag print of the jacket combined with the corduroy pants give the uniform a ‘heirloom hippy’ vibe that lines up with snowboarding’s laid-back culture while paying respect to America’s longstanding creative heritage.

The Citi Bike Update

It has been about 6 months since the Citi Bike bicycle sharing program launched in NYC. Despite early glitches, it has caught on with great success. The Department of Transportation released data last week about the program which revealed that New Yorkers are taking 33,000 bike trips daily on a Citi Bike, most frequently for commuting, but also for errands, shopping, sightseeing and exercise. 95,000 had signed up for annual memberships. I wrote about my early experiences with the Citi Bike program at the end of June in a piece called SHARE THE RIDE. As I have since become an official Citi Bike rider, as seen on my keychain above, I thought it would be useful to update the piece with a few new thoughts.

Let me say first of all I think the program is great. What I do and don’t like about the bikes is just my personal experience, but it is fantastic to see so many New Yorkers out there on those blue bikes, adopting the program, and choosing pedal power over other forms of transportation. By and large, I can always get a bike, and equally important, get rid of it at the end of the journey. Only once have I been shut out by no bikes, but it was rush hour on a beautiful day, on a very populated Park Ave South. Only once have I been unable to return a bike because of no open stations at a particular destination or spots nearby. This required waiting for about 10 minutes for someone to take a bike out so I could slot mine in. Others were uncomfortably hovering to do the same. Both experiences made me realize that using the bikes to get someplace on time might not be the most reliable form of transportation. Hence, I don’t ride them that often, maybe a couple times a week.

As I wrote previously the bikes themselves are real clunkers. They are obviously built for durability, and with the kind of beating they take on NYC streets (the cobblestones are particularly brutal), they are proving fairly indestructible, but they are not that fun to ride. Perhaps part of that durability is how upright the frame has to be, but I find myself slipping forward off the seat and wishing that the pedals were more in front of me so I could get more power with the pedal stroke. The bikes only have 3 speeds and are not meant to go fast, but when you find yourself in traffic, needing to pick up speed fast to avert distaster, I find the geometry of the bikes a challenge. Hence I don’t ride the bikes for long trips.

What do I ride the bikes for most regularly is crosstown trips, or to and from destinations where there is no public transportation. For example, it’s the perfect way to get from my office on 29th and Park to the Chelsea art galleries, or from Tribeca to the east side subway. According to the DOT, this is one of the most popular ways the CitiBikes are being used, in tandem with other form of transportation.

So while I don’t love the bikes, I do love the program and the shared bond you feel with your fellow New Yorker on a Citi Bike at a red light. I have found a way to integrate and support the bike sharing program, which I think is important for environmental and health reasons, and it’s kind of cool to have that blue key ready to unlock a bike at any place and any time. While I do still find the bikes quite ugly, they have sort of become an indelible feature of the NYC landscape. As a life long New Yorker, riding the Citi Bikes feels like what real New Yorkers do.

It’s A Wrap… Kinesiology Tape

A few years ago, at the Beijing Olympics, I noticed Beach Volleyball Gold Medalist Kerri Walsh’s shoulder covered in very badass-looking colorful tape. It was applied with an intricate criss-crossing pattern and I was intrigued to find out more. As an recreational athlete who tends to overdo it with a fair amount of frequency, I am always interested in what professional athletes do to treat their injuries. Since its their job to get back on the field or court as quickly as possible, they usually have access to the most progressive therapies. It turns out the latest thing is Kenisio Tape and in the London Olympic Games it was everywhere.

Kinesiology Tape is applied to reduce pain and inflammation, and support muscles in movement. Developed in the mid-1970s by Dr. Kenzo Kase, a well-known Japanese practitioner in chiropractics and acupuncture, the tape was designed in response to the limitations he encountered working with traditional sports tape. Kenisio tape has a texture and elasticity very close to human skin. It is non-restrictive and allows for full range of motion, in contrast to traditional sports tape.

A few weeks ago, I found a doctor in NYC, Dr. Vladimir Friedman, DC, CCSP,CKTP, a chiropractor who uses the Kinesiology Tape as a post-treatment therapy. Nursing a hamstring strain going into a half-marathon, it seemed like the perfect time to see if Kenisio Tape worked. I felt I had come full circle when there on his wall was a picture of Kerri Walsh! While the jury is out as to whether Kinesiology Tape really works, I shaved 5 minutes off my time and broke that elsuive 2hr mark. You be the judge.

For more information on Kinesiology Tape, watch the segment from CBS This Morning above.

Burton + L.A.M.B + BIONIC

GWEN STEFANI & PHARELL WILLIAMS MIX IT UP WITH BURTON SNOWBOARDS

LEFT: BURTON x L.A.M.B. BOMBER JACKET WITH TUX SNOWBOARD PANTS; RIGHT BURTON x BIONIC BOMBER DOWN SNOWBOARD JACKET WITH 3L SNOWBOARD PANT

A few weeks ago we reported on Burton Snowboard’s collaboration and capsule collection with Filson, BURTON x FILSON, but the mash-ups have not stopped there. Now available online and in stores are two more collaborative collections from Burton, that bring the influence of two of the music industry’s biggest stars to snowboard style… one with Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B. and the other with Pharrell’s BIONIC.

BURTON x L.A.M.B.

The highly-anticipated women’s outerwear collection created with Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B. label is finally available in select stores and online, and mixes Gwen’s bold street style with Burton’s tech-savvy functionality. The L.A.M.B. for Burton collection features ten pieces that include down jackets, anoraks, parkas and pants that can’t be missed, each with different prints from large dalmatian dots to an oversized houndstooth.

The goal was to have some fun and try something a little different,” said Gwen Stefani. “The clothing itself is really technical and performance-oriented so it was a new challenge. We worked really hard on the pants – I wanted to design a pair that had a really great fit and is super flattering but also cool with an edge.” Her favorite pieces from the collection, she says, are the Parka Jacket and Tux Pant.

BURTON x BIONIC

Also just in time for the holidays, is Burton’s capsule collection of eco-conscious winter outerwear and accessories created with music and style icon Pharrell Williams, brand ambassador for BIONIC Yarn. BIONIC is an eco-textile brand that makes luxe high-performance fabrics from recycled plastic bottles. BIONIC Yarn incorporates 40-45% recycled content which actually makes it up to 400% stronger than traditional thread and a very durable fabric for snowboard outerwear.

Pharell took his inspiration for this collection from South American textiles, and traditional Peruvian prints are the foundation of the line. With a look that feels both modern and vintage, the Burton x BIONIC line is made up of 7 pieces that include jackets, pants, and accessories designed to transition from wintery weekend pursuits to the daily grind. The brightly striped Bomber Down Jacket features a distinctive silhouette inspired by 1970’s ski jackets, reflecting yet another mash-up of ski and snowboard style!

Both the L.A.M.B collection for women and BIONIC collection for men are available in super limited supply. Grab these pieces while they last at select snowboard shops, Burton flagship stores and on Burton.com.

The Nike Allover Flash Running Jacket features a glass-beaded exterior that produces 360 degrees of 400-candlepower reflectivity for enhanced visibility. As seen in the picture above, and in all the other items featured here, it glows like flash bulb when light hits it.

Currently available from Puma as well is a new collection of running shoes and apparel that use reflectivity as both a safety and a design element. While the Faas 100 R Stealth Running Shoes and Pure Nightcat Jacket may appear muted in color by day, they illuminate with patterns and graphics sure to be seen under passing headlight beams by night. In addition, the Asics Lite-Show, Saucony ViZiPro and Nathan TorchLight collections all include performance driven shoes, apparel and gear created to keep you in the light even when it’s dark.

In addition to reflectivity, the pieces in all these collection are made for cold weather running. They are warm and breathable, wind and weather resistant, designed to keep you out there enjoying those outdoor sports even when the weather might try to keep you indoors.

Our Kind of Granola Bar

KIND HEALTHY GRAIN BARS

While it’s hard not to love a good granola bar, with its seemingly healthy combination of whole grains, nuts, seeds, dried fruit, and honey, they are often so high in fat and sugar that the calorie count is the same as a candy bar. That’s why we are so happy our friends at Kind, makers of one of our favorite snack bars and granolas, have just come out with a new line of granola bars called Kind Healthy Grains Bars.

As with their other products, these granola bars are made with simple all natural ingredients: whole grains like oats, millet, quinoa, and amaranth, combined with other tasty ingredients like nuts, seeds, coconut, berries, peanut butter and chocolate. They are sweetened with brown rice syrup, maple syrup and/or honey, all low glycemic to keep blood sugar levels in check.

Each of these chewy and crunchy bars has about 150 calories, 24 grams of carbs, 8 grams of sugar, 3 grams of fiber, 5 grams of fat. They are gluten-free and available in 5 flavors: Peanut Butter Dark Chocolate, Vanilla Blueberry, Maple Pumpkin Seeds, Dark Chocolate Chunk, Oats & Honey… all of which are equally delicious! So if you are snackers like us or looking for a extra bit of fuel on the go, add these to your arsenal of healthy treats.

Ski You At The Barre

AMIE ENGERBRETSON IN MURREN SCHILTORN, SWITZERLAND

With many resorts officially open for business, ski season is upon us, but it’s still early and there is plenty of time to get those ski legs in shape. We heard about a cool ski conditioning class being taught out in Lake Tahoe, California by a local ripper and ski model, Amie Engerbretson. For you skiers who can also be found at the bar (class that is), Amie’s class is a barre style workout created specifically for ski conditioning. It is designed to build responsive stabilizer muscles and an iron core, as well as those strong legs and glutes essential for great skiing. As Amie says, “a strong, prepared body instills confidence and everything from there is a trickle down effect. Conditioning improves your on hill performance, helps prevent injury and guarantees a fun day out on the hill”

Todd Snyder City Gym

A few weeks ago, we reported on a crop of new bespoke sporting goods and apparel stores that had recently opened in downtown Manhattan, distinctive for their integration of design and sport. Another shop of note just joined the group, Todd Snyder City Gym, a pop-up which features the Todd Snyder + Champion collection, in addition to a curated collection of vintage inspired sporting goods, books, magazines and other American made miscellania.

The Todd Snyder + Champion collection is designer Todd Snyder’s collaboration with the 94-year-old sportswear brand Champion, and reflects a nostalgia for the high school gymnasium of yore. It features vintage inspired sweatshirts, sweatpants, varsity jackets, t-shirts and other sport influenced apparel. The design of the store creates the perfect backdrop for the collection and this era, complete with aged metal lockers, vintage black and white sport photographs, as well as a display of old school sporting goods for sale, such as assorted leather balls from Leather Head, wooden bats by Hoosier and classic canvas hi-tops from PF Flyers. Merino Wool: Hi-Tech By Nature

ROW 1: IBEX SHAK FREESTAR ZIP-UP MID-LAYER; ICEBREAKER SPRITE RACERBACK TANK & HOT PANTS; SMARTWOOL NTS MID 250 PATTERN BOTTOM; ROW 2: ICEBREAKER OASIS LEGGINGS; PATAGONIA MERINO 3 MIDWEIGHT ZIP NECK; ICEBREAKER UNISEX POCKET HAT; ROW 3: SMARTWOOL PHD NTS LIGHT 195 WIND ZIP T; NIKE DRI-FIT WOOL V-NECK; ICEBREAKER UNISEX CORONET GLOVES

Merino wool is fast becoming the performance fabric of choice for many athletes and outdoor enthusiasts. It is a uniquely versatile fabric that keeps the athlete warm when its cold and cool when it’s hot — ideal for running, hiking, skiing, cycling, and any other outdoor sport.

Merino is regarded as being one of the finest and softest wools, consisting of a higher number of thread fibers than others. These fibers trap tiny pockets of air which act to insulate in cold weather, and at the same time wick moisture away to the surface, keeping the body cool when it’s heating up. Because the individual fibers stay dry this keeps the fabric odor-free, aided by the anti-bacterial lanolin naturally occurring in the wool. Few other single fabrics work so well in such a broad range of temperatures.

Whereas synthetic fabrics, essentially a blend of polyester and nylon, have been the popular choice for activewear in recent years, brands like Smartwool and Icebreaker have been toting the advantages of Merino wool for a while now, and using it exclusively in their sport apparel. Other major sport brands like Nike, Patagonia, Arc’Teryx and Lululemon, seeing the benefits, have recently added Merino based apparel to their product line. As a result, stylish Merino baselayers, performance tops and bottoms, hats, gloves and other accessories are now available in a wide variety styles and colors, designed to appeal to all kinds of athletes and sports enthusiasts.

The ElliptiGO

THE ELLIPTIGO

The ElliptiGO is an outdoor elliptical bicycle, designed to mimic the motion of running while on two wheels. I had been seeing these bikes here and there, and was curious to check one out, although I was unsure whether this was a gimicky hybrid cycling apparatus or a serious piece of fitness equipment. Once my good friend and former pro Volleyball player, Gabrielle Reece, told me she had an ElliptiGO, I figured it was legit and had to give it a try.

I just had the opportunity to take one out for a test ride in New York City’s Central Park and am on board. I had a great workout riding the 6.2 mile lap of flats, uphills and downhills and had a blast at the same time. Propelled by long elliptical strides, the ElliptiGO provides a fun and low-impact way to exercise outside, which beats a cardio machine at the gym any day. For the same reason that I am such a fan of Stand Up Paddleboarding, the upright stance forces you to use your core muscles and the height of the vantage point provides an enjoyable vista as well.

In a test commissioned by the company, researchers found that riding an ElliptiGO burns 33% more calories than riding a regular bike, while delivering a cardiovascular workout comparable to running. Besides the quads, the glutes and hamstrings are actively engaged, and as Gabby pointed out, the hips are getting a good stretch at the same time.

The company has been targeting the ElliptiGO to runners, both injured and healthy, as way to train and experience benefits of running outdoors without any of the negative results from the impact of the sport. The ElliptiGO has become a cross-training tool for many runners, and promotional videos feature testimonials from such pros as ultra marathoner, Dean Karnases, and former world champion distance runner, Mary Decker Slaney, toting the ElliptiGO as a way to increase increase milage through cross-training, get back into running after injury, and enjoy the physical and psychological benefits of running without the pounding of the sport. My experience is this is fun and effective aerobic training for any fitness enthusiast looking to add something new to their workout routine.

The ElliptiGO is available in three different models ranging from the most basic 3 speed model, priced at $1799, to the 11-speed sleek carbon fiber model, priced at $3499. They’re not cheap, so you know they’re pretty serious. For more information and to take one for a test ride, go to ELLIPTIGO.COM.

Burton x Filson

FILSON X BURTON SENTRY SNOWBOARD JACKET & SQUIRE SNOWBOARD JACKET

Two of our favorite and most prominent outdoor brands, Burton and Filson, have just launched a small Burton x Filson capsule collection that brings their two worlds, and seemingly opposite ends of the outdoor spectrum, together. Filson, founded in 1897, is a company rich in tradition, with a long history as manufacturers of quality upscale hunting and fishing apparel. Associated with an older and more staid customer, Filson is not the first company that would come to mind to collaborate with Burton Snowboards and those crazy snowboard shreddin’ kids. Burton Snowboards has grown up, however, and its riders matured. With the company’s 40th birthday not too far off, the respect for its elders is apparent in this and other recent collaborations with long established heritage brands, such as Redwing Shoes and Manitobah Mukluks. In turn, these heritage brands understand the tradition of high quality functional sportswear Burton has been creating since 1977, and the value of partnering with a brand that has such extreme customer loyalty.

The collection features 4 pieces — 3 jackets and 1 pair of pants — for men only (sorry ladies!) and marries the signature fabrics for which Filson is famous with Burton’s experience in creating highly functional snowboard outerwear. The Sentry Jacket, shown above, uses Filson’s Tin Cloth, a weather repellent oilcloth originally created in the early 1900’s and designed for the Pacific Northwest’s exploding timber industry. The Squire Jacket utilizes a combo of Filson’s rugged Mackinaw Wool and durable wax-soaked cotton Shelter Cloth. With these fabrics, Burton has added its own signature detailing designed for the snowboarder, such as drop-tail styling, vents and powder skirts, and hidden sound and goggle pockets… marrying tech with timeless style.

While at first it seems that Burton and Filson couldn’t be more different, this collaboration actually shows how similar these two companies really are, both as sportswear and as lifestyle brands. Both have a reputation for creating sport apparel that works, designed with the kind of style that is wearable anyplace and anytime, and appeals to all sorts of customers, whether they participate in the sport for which they were designed or not.

The Watch To Watch

MI COACH SPORT RUN WATCH

Just back from the New York City Marathon Expo, where there was all sorts of super cool new running shoes, apparel and gear. I have to say the hot item of the show was the running watch just debuted by Adidas. Like many state of the art running watches on the market, such as the Suunto Ambit2, Nike+ Sportwatch, and Garmin Forerunner 610, the MI COACH SPORT RUN watch has GPS for pace, distance and route logging; customizable training data screens; heart rate monitor; and timer, interval and lap functionality. There are a number of unique features, however, that set it apart.

To start, the MI COACH SPORT RUN is the first touch screen sport watch — i.e. no tiny buttons to access data — and the screen is color. Simply swipe from function to function. The heart rate monitor measures bpm off the wrist, so no additonal heart rate strap is required. The watch also features a built in MP3 player with 4GB of data storage and Bluetooth audio for use with cordless headphones. It syncs with the MiCoach platform for workout planning and tracking, and real time coaching is delivered via audio cues or vibration alerts from the watch.

Now I have not tested the watch myself, although I am eager to take it out for a run, but from what I saw in the demo and its ultra sleek style, this looks like the watch to watch!

The Toggle Coat

BURBERRY BRIT ~ WOOLRICH

toggle coat by saint laurent and j.crew

SAINT LAURENT ~ J.CREW

toggle coat by y-3 and merrell

Y-3 ~ MERRELL

The toggle or duffle coat is a sporty classic for both men and women. It is a perennial favorite of fashion houses and outdoor brands alike, and owes its popularity to the British Royal Navy who made the coat standard issue during World War I. The distinguishing features of the duffle coat were designed for functionality. The wooden toggles could be easily fastened and unfastened while wearing gloves in cold weather at sea and the oversized hood offered enough room to wear over a Naval cap.

The same design prevails today and this fall season, brands from Saint Laurent and Burberry to Woolrich and Merrell have brought us their interpretations of this timeless classic. Here are our six picks for the season’s best toggle coats.

New Kids on the Block

AETHER NYC

A handful of bespoke sporting goods stores have recently opened in downtown Manhattan, displaying a distinct urban influence with their integration of design and sport. New stores like Aether NYC (shown above), Shinola, Patagonia Bowery and Best Made Company, all feature beautifully rendered and sophisticated interiors, and carry a range of refined products to match. There is no compromise on functionality, however, and these shops also offer a variety of accessories curated for the chic sporting lifestyle. Highlights of the spacious interior are the spiral staircase, steel catwalk and vaulted skylight in the rear, along with a cozy fashion newsstand cafe by The Smile in front.

KAPUSKASING TENNIS TOTE; GARNET GOLF BAG; TIMMONS SKIBOOT BAG

Designer and founder of Park, Anne-Marie Olson, was raised in Ottawa Canada where she grew up swimming and fishing, playing tennis and golf, and skiing in the Laurentian Mountains nearby. Summers were spent with her grandparents in the bucolic setting of Kapuskasing, Ontario, where every day was filled with sports and outdoor activities. The authenticity of the Northern-Ontario lifestyle is apparent in all her bags, and reflect a nostalgia for a time when wooden tennis rackets, plaid canteens, Hudson Bay blankets and wicker picnic baskets were the standard accessories for all outings and sporting events.

In addition to bags, Park also makes other vintage inspired items like blankets, folding chairs, flasks and a fur trimmed sleeping bag, the perfect compliments to the chic sporting life.

LandPaddling

KAHUNA CREATIONS RASTA BEACH BOARD AND ADJUSTABLE KAHUNA STICK

Summer may be over, but except for you diehards and warm weather dwellers, there is no need for the SUP season to end. From Kahuna Creations comes the Kahuna Stick, which is essentially a land paddle for your skateboard. Designed to be used with a longboard, the Kahuna Stick features a long curved rubber end with which the rider pushes themselves along in a motion similar to Stand Up Paddleboarding. The same core muscles are used and similar to SUP, it’s a great workout. Check out this VIDEO for a little demo.

Now this does require a bit more coordination than with Stand Up Paddleboarding, and falling on pavement is not as forgiving as falling in the water. However, the stick is designed to be used with a longboard, which is much more stable than a regular skateboard. Kahuna has longboards up to 59″ (almost the size of a small surfboard!), that are over a foot wide and pretty steady underfoot.

So if you’re feeling adventurous and missing those SUP days of summer, this is a great way to get outdoors and enjoy that paddling sensation in the cooler months when the water might not be so inviting.

The VW Bus: The End Of An Era

MID 60’S ERA VOLKSWAGEN T2 CAMPER VAN

With new automotive safety restrictions in the country, Volkswagen Brazil has announced it will cease production of the Volkswagen T2 at the end of 2013. Known as the Kombi in Brazil, the van has been in production there since 1957. Brazil has been the sole country to produce this iconic Volkswagen since Germany phased it out in 1979, followed by Mexico in 1994. The T2 now has the distinction of being the longest produced vehicle in automotive history.

During the 1960’s, the Volkswagen Transporter, as it was originally named, became the recognized vehicle of the hippie generation. With its free riding spirit and live-in lifestyle, the T2 was soon adopted by the surf community as the transportation (and home for some) of choice. Read More

Even for those brands that simply have pink in their palette, it’s a great time to wear this commemorative color in support of family, friends, and those we don’t know at all, to show we are all on the same team. So whether walking or running, skiing or snowboarding, biking or skating, punch it up with some pink and let’s all do our part to support this critical cause.

LT: The Life & Times of Lawrence Taylor

LAWRENCE TAYLOR, NEW YORK GIANTS VS. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS, JANUARY 1994

Now airing on Showtime is “LT: The Life & Times”, a documentary that chronicles the ups and downs of the career of NFL Hall of Famer, Lawrence Taylor. Nicknamed “LT”, Lawrence Taylor is arguably the best linebacker to have ever played the game and considered one of the best defensive players of all time. His tumultuous life off the field, however, brought him equal notoriety for substance abuse, illegal drug possession, and numerous resulting NFL suspensions.

Directed by 27-time Sports Emmy winner Peter Radovich, Jr., and narrated by Jon Bon Jovi, the documentary takes an in depth look at Lawrence Taylor’s life with previously untold stories from Taylor himself, his family, friends, former teammates and coaches, including Bill Parcells, for whom he won the Super Bowl with the New York Giants in 1987; Bill Belichick, who was the Giants defensive coach; Phil Simms, the quarterback; and even Joe Theismann, whose career he ended with that famous hit that broke his leg. Despite LT’s flaws, all seem to have genuine affection for him, Parcells in particular, based on the tenacity with which he played the game.

The Watch To Sport

SUUNTO AMBIT2 S

When we hear the words “womens model” we usually think smaller, pink and teal, and not nearly as cool looking as the mens, but the new Suunto Ambit2 S defies those preconceptions. Designed with the same large size face as the mens but proportioned for smaller wrists, this sleek white sportwatch is chic as its gets, while still offering the impressive range of functions which has made the Ambit one of the most popular sport watches on the market.

With an intergrated GPS and heart rate monitor, the Ambit2 S tracks the such basics as pace, distance, elapsed and split times, but also monitors host of other customizable data with a sport by sport setting. Switch functions from running to biking, for example, and the watch becomes your bike computer. Switch again to swimming and the watch becomes an interval timer and lap counter. For the outdoor adventurer, routes, navigation and a compass are just some of the functions available. Click HERE for a demo. All data monitored can then be transferred and stored on Movescount, Suunto’s online sport and fitness community.

Available this October, the Suunto Ambit Ambit2 S is the sportwatch we are loving for our outdoor activities this fall. Hey… even the guys might want to sport it as well!

School is back in session. The playgrounds and schoolyards are packed with kids running around, exhilarated to be out of the classroom. In the mad dash to get outside, gym clothes are thrown on over school clothes, and this fashion mix is in style for us grown-ups too. More sophisticated but with the same spirit, the look is playground punk, and blends sport with street style. Leather jackets and biker boots are mixed with schoolgirl classics like tartan kilts and penny loafers. Reissues of standards like the gym class t-shirt and old school canvas high tops are paired with tight candy striped jeans and quilted sweatshirts. Even the bike is a mix of chopper and traditional english style. It’s a look that’s playful and chic, a mix of naughty and nice, ready for action and perhaps a little bit of trouble.

For those seeking a slimmer and more stylish high performance sport sunglass, the Overdrive is available in great duel toned color combos (we love the orange and slate gray!), mixing matte and gloss finishes.

Go Team

Football season is upon us. NFL apparel and its oversized team jerseys are not something that usually earn style points, but all over the September issues are chic ads featuring models such as Karolina Kurkova and Hilary Rhoda supporting their favorite teams. In an effort to appeal more to its style conscious female fan base, the NFL hired famed fashion lensman Patrick Demarchelier to shoot this campaign promoting the NFL Shop and line of women’s apparel available at Target as well.

So for all you football fans out there rooting for the home team, now you can do it with some style. V-necks, burnouts, sparkles, hoodies and more, matched with the right accessories, this sporty look need not be reserved for game day only.

Hang 100,000

MARC NEWSON NICKEL SURFBOARD 2006

Now available through private sale at Paddle8 is this limited edition Marc Newson nickel surfboard. It is one of an edition of 22 produced in 2006, which Newson originally priced at $100,000. Most recently one sold at auction at Sothebys for $220,000.

The renowned industrial designer created the board in collaboration with veteran surfboard shaper and legend Dick Brewer, designed with the demands of big wave surfer Garrett McNamara in mind. His name might be familiar as he was in the news last January for having ridden a 100 ft. wave, the largest ever surfed, off the coast of Nazare, Portugal.

This silvery projectile is a work of art and a typically exquisite Newson creation. As an industrial designer, however, Newson’s objective was to create the perfect board for McNamara. Nickel was a optimal choice of material because of its strength and rigidity, critical in big wave surfing. In fact the board is really only good in extreme surf. This bodes well for the rest of us, who would happily own this board as the ultimate showpiece, an object of desire most anyone would covet whether they surf or not.

To watch a video on the process and creation of the board, click here.

Bladerunner

ADIDAS SPRINGBLADE

Earlier this year, Adidas launched the Energy Boost, a lightweight running shoe with a sole constructed of tiny microcapsules fused together to provide great cushioning and responsiveness. The Boost foam is temperature-resistant, keeping the spring in your step regardless of weather conditions. I’ve been running in them all summer and loving them. Thus, I was intrigued to check out Adidas’s newest running shoe, the Springblade.

Upon first glance, there is no doubt the Adidas Springblade is a revolutionary design. Instead of a traditional midsole, the sole features 16 forward-angled blades positioned to propel the runner forward. Looking very much like miniature versions of those high-tech carbon fiber running prosthetics, each blade is individually tuned in geometry and position to accommodate the entire phase of the running stride. One’s discerning nature might question whether this is a bit of a gimmick, but after taking them for a spin, I have to say the shoes provided a cushioned and responsive ride, delivering on their promise of maximum spring and energy return.

The shoe is optimally suited for more of a heel striker than a forefoot runner, making them a nice choice for the recreational runner whose gait tends to be more the former and those looking for a more cushioned ride.

I am more of a purist, personally preferring a more traditional looking shoe for running and will be sticking with my Boosts for now. For those looking to make more of a fashion statement on the road however, the Springblade offers excellent performance along with its attention grabbing high-tech design.

Fit For Any Occasion

SHINE FITNESS BAND

We love when a new sport or fitness product hits the market, as remarkable for its style as its functionality. As we reported back in March in Tracking Devices, there are some very beautifully designed fitness and activity trackers currently available, like the Nike Fuel Band, Fitbit, and Jawbone. The recent addition to the genre however, SHINE from Misfit, has got to be the most gorgeous motion detector we have seen thus far. Slick black brushed aluminum, interchangeable on a clasp, sport band, leather band, or necklace, this is an elegant objet wearable for any occasion… and yes, it tells time too.

Designed to monitor your every move, whether in motion or at rest, fitness trackers are great motivators. They encourage you to set physical goals for yourself each day, attainable through a wide range of activities, which can then be downloaded onto your computer or mobile device. With Shine the syncing is done as artfully as the monitoring, both in process and graphics. The iPhone app provides a circular outline, on which the Shine is placed and radiating circles indicate the syncing is in process. The information is automatically downloaded onto the phone and from there stats, goals, trends and insights are presented with refined graphics.

If you have been looking for some fitness motivation, Shine is designed to inspire and is reasonably priced as well at $119.95.

Sunday Night Sports Flix: 5 Great Documentaries

With many of you taking vacation during these last official weeks of summer, and perhaps looking for some sporty entertainment for rainy days or relaxing evenings at home, we thought it was time to bring you another installment of Sunday Night Sports Flix. Acclaimed filmmaker Bruce Brown of “Endless Summer” fame, turns his camera from the world of surf onto the exhilarating insanity of motocross racing, documented with his signature humor and expertise. The grueling mayhem of the sport in its early days is the focus as the film follows the tortuous Mexican 1000, an off-road race down the Baja peninsula. Never before seen camera work puts you in the motorcycle seat. Read More

Go Fly A Kite

Last week I spent two days at the NY Kite Center in Amityville, Long Island, taking my first stab at Kiteboarding, the hot new-ish board sport out on the water. I had been wanting to give it try it for a while, seeing the sport evolving and gaining in popularity. As it turns out, one of the premiere kiteboarding locations in the tri-state area and the largest schools in the Northeast, is located just an hour train ride away from Penn Station in New York City.

For those unfamiliar with the sport, it’s not parasailing, where you are pulled behind a boat while hanging from a parachute; nor is it paragliding, where you are attached to a large hanglider which you fly. I mention those because when I told people what I was doing, those were the sports they referenced. Kiteboarding is sailing a very large kite while riding what is basically a wakeboard, and using the power of the wind to pull you across the water. It’s an adrenaline sport for those who like to catch air, chill for those who just want to ride, and addictive for anyone who has gotten the hang of it!

Getting the hang of it, however, does takes some time. There is first learning to fly and control a small trainer kite on land, then moving on to the regular sized kite. The next step is flying the kite while standing in the water. After two days of 3 hour sessions, I got as far as “bodydragging”, where you let the kite pull you across the water in figure 8 formations. Except for the awful name, I have to say that was pretty fun in itself. Next step is the board, which I am ready and eager to put on.

Santa Monica Track Club

CARL LEWIS WINNING 100M 1984 OLYMPIC TRIALS (GETTY IMAGES/DAVID MADISON; NIKE SANTA MONICA TRACK CLUB TANK

The World Track & Field Championships are currently being held in Moscow and Usain Bolt is continuing to reign supreme as the fastest man on earth. Meanwhile, Nike has produced a selection of retro-styled Santa Monica Track Club tees and tanks for both men and women. These shirts are reminders of one of the greatest sprinters and long jumpers in Track & Field history, Carl Lewis, and the club for which he ran.

The Santa Monica Track Club was founded in 1972 as a post-collegiate track club whose primary purpose was to develop athletes for the Olympics, World Championships and international Track & Field competition. By the 1980s, the team was a major player in Track & Field, with its members setting numerous World and National records. The brightly colored Santa Monica Track Club sunburst logo became the recognizable icon of these elite athletes.

Carl Lewis joined the team in 1979 and was the dominant sprinter and long jumper in the sport from 1981 to the early 1990s. He won 10 Olympic medals, including 9 gold, and 10 World Championships medals, including 8 gold. His world record in the indoor long jump has stood since 1984 and his 65 consecutive victories in the long jump, achieved over a span of 10 years, is one of the most impressive undefeated streaks in any sport.

The club continues today to develop world class Track & Field Athletes, still helmed by its founder Joe Douglas.

This sweatshirt may look like your basic gray hoodie, but at the ends of the drawstrings are built-in headphones. The HoodieBuddie contains a standard headphone jack in the front pocket that is compatible with any mp3 player, iPhone or other mobile device. Plug it in and the audio travels through cables embedded within the sweatshirt to the headphones. Wires stay tucked away and tangle free, and you always have a set of headphones handy. Now while the sound may not be the most amazing, it’s not bad, and the convenience can’t be beat.

The HoodieBuddie comes in a wide variety of hip styles and colors, like High Low Burnout Wash and Mock Twist French Terry, for both guys and girls. Best of all it’s machine washable… headphones and all.

For the upcoming change of season, we are seeing a return to the brands of our youth and a nostalgia for the sportswear with which we grew up. Companies like L.L.Bean, founded in 1912; Woolrich, family run since 1830; and Eastland Shoes, in business since 1955, all represent American made quality and craftsmanship which have become increasingly popular in today’s marketplace. Jansport and Burton Snowboards, among others, have created “heritage” collections, returning to the original designs and even logos of their early days.

These companies have a loyal following among the generation that was raised wearing their apparel. They have found a new generation of customers, however, by partnering with contemporary designers and updating their looks, while remaining true to the essence of the brand. Designer Todd Snyder has collaborated with Champion, established in 1919, to launch a men’s sportswear line for Fall 2013 entitled “City Gym”. The collection is inspired by archival Champion pieces and vintage photos from the New York Athletic Club. G.H.Bass is soon debuting a new campaign which pays tribute to the Weejun Penny Loafer. L.L.Bean’s “Signature” collection, consists of the tried and true classics but cut slimmer for a younger urban customer. And Sperry Topsider has been revitalized by the fun and colorful reinvention of its classic boat shoe, first released in 1935.

Finally we have new companies like Topo Designs and Best Made Company, re-creating retro sporting gear and apparel, inspired by camping, fishing, hunting and other outdoor sports in their early lo-tech days. What’s old is new again, or even better, doesn’t age. These classics are iconic pieces of American sportswear, as stylish today as when they were when first worn.

Fly Free

nike-free-flyknit-track-club-early-release-1

First came the Nike Free, a super flexible, minimal running shoe, designed to support the foot’s natural movement during the stride. Introduced about 10 years ago, the shoe has become one of the biggest sellers in swoosh history among athletes and fashionistas alike.

Then came the Nike Flyknit about a year ago, available in both a race and training model, revered for its knit structure and resulting precision fit. While Track & Field superstar Allyson Felix may train in this shoe, it is the beautiful tapestry of the interwoven threads, that have established it as another winner among the fashion set.

Debuting next week, August 1 to be precise, is the eagerly anticipated combination of these two styles, merging into one as the Nike Free Flyknit. The shoe features the sole of the Free 5.0, combined with an extra elasticized Flyknit upper. While I haven’t seen the shoe yet, if the pictures do it justice, I have a feeling this one will become another favorite among runners and sneakerheads alike. Falling into both categories myself, I can’t wait to get my hands, or should I say feet, on a pair!

Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia

NEW YORK SUPERFOODS CHIA MOXIE PEANUT BUTTER

No we are not talking about ChiaPets, that sprouting clay animal of our youth, but the wonder seed chia, rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fiber, the benefits of which are lowered cholesterol, anti-aging, and cancer prevention. The seeds are some the most nutrient-dense foods you can eat, with just two tablespoons containing 10 grams of fiber, 6 grams of protein, more calcium than milk, more Omega-3s than salmon and more iron than spinach.

Besides these wide-ranging health benefits, this superfood is one of the top fuel sources for endurance athletes. The best-selling book, Born To Run, highlighted chia seeds as the indigenous dietary staple of the Tarahumara Indians, a tribe of ultra-runners in the Copper Canyons of Mexico, noted for their 50+ mile runs. Because of their extreme absorbancy, chia seeds provide sustained energy and help prevent dehydration. They expand up to ten times their original size when soaked in water, forming a gel-like substance that slows the conversion of carbohydrates into sugar and allows carbohydrates consumed to fuel the body for longer periods of time. This helps stabilize blood sugar levels and regulate body fluids to retain electrolytes, critical in preventing dehydration during long runs.

Now we are not the Tarahumara Indians, who are going to eat a handful of not particularly tasty chia seeds before a run. There is however, a new line of chia rich products on the market, created specifically for athletes. I recently sampled the “Chia Chargers” and “Chia Moxie Peanut Butter” by the family owned and run, New York Superfoods. These products are completely natural, gluten-free, certified non-GMO and delicious! Co-founder Catherine Walsh, a runner and triathlete, created these products with her husband, to fill a gap in the marketplace of nutritious chia products designed for athletic performance. Launched in 2010, they created the first ever raw chia health energy bite, the Chia Charger®  and now have a line chia peanut butters as well. Regardless of your fitness level or activity, these products are a tasty way to incorporate this superfood into your diet, with the added benefit of enhanced athletic performance. Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia!

“The Crash Reel”

KEVIN PEARCE: PHOTOGRAPH BY ADAM MORAN

Now airing on HBO is “The Crash Reel”, a documentary about snowboarder Kevin Pearce, his horrific crash during a half pipe training run, and amazing recovery from the Traumatic Brain Injury that resulted. The film takes place over two years and focuses equally on the Pearce family (his father is Simon Pearce, well known glassware manufacturer). Watching footage of the actual crash, one is amazed it was not fatal and his journey back from near death is quite miraculous. The emotional toll Kevin’s accident takes on his family, their strength and bond is highlighted in particular when Kevin expresses his desire to snowboard again.

The film is directed by Lucy Walker, twice Oscar nominated for “Waste Land” and “The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom”. In its review, The New York Times credits Ms.Walker with not making “The Crash Reel” a triumph-over-adversity film. While Kevin does snowboard again, it far from his skill leval before the crash. She raises the question of sponsors and television encouraging recklessness, and exploiting these action sport athletes who know no limits.  The film also features the stories of a number of well known action sports athletes not as lucky as Kevin.  Read More

Patagonia at 40: The Legacy Collection

CLICK FOR SNEAK PEEK OF THE LEGACY COLLECTION

In celebration of their upcoming 40th anniversary, the designers at Patagonia decided to go back to where it all started. They culled from the archives and dug up their most iconic pieces, 9 of which have been reinterpreted and reproduced for the Legacy Collection debuting in September.

Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard, family, friends, and many of the original crew were asked to select their favorite pieces from over the years. All were pretty much in agreement about which ones to bring back. “It’s really just a moment that you are actually doing your activity”, says designer John Rapp, “most of it is prepping”. He describes this as a “lifestyle” collection, inspired by those technical pieces but created to “get you there and back”.

US Womens Open Golf Championships

SEBONAK GOLF COURSE, SOUTHAMPTON, NY

SEBONACK GOLF COURSE, SOUTHAMPTON, NY. We witnessed history today with South Korean, Inbee Park, winning her third straight major of the season, the 2013 US Womens Open Golf Championships, a feat not accomplished since the great Babe Zaharias in 1950. Park had previously won the US Open in 2008 at age 19, making history then as well, as the youngest player to ever win that championship. Park now has the opportunity, going into the British Open, to be the first golfer ever, man or woman, to win the first four majors of the year.

The tournament was also historic in that it was the first Womens Championship ever played on Long Island. Sebonak Golf Club in Southampton, which opened in 2006, hosted the US Open on a beautiful waterfront course, featuring panoramic views of the Peconic Bay and Cold Spring Pond. Designed by Jack Nicklaus and Tom Doak, the course is impeccably maintained, but with a rustic vibe very different than the more historic neighboring courses, Shinnecock Hills and National Golf Links of America.

With the championship taking place close to home, I had the opportunity to spend a couple of days watching history in the making and soaking up the scenery. Above and below are a few Instagram snaps from my time on the course.

The fortnight at Wimbledon is now underway and for the next two weeks we will watch the classic style of tennis whites in play. It is a timeless look and quite sophisticated when mixed with accents of black and gray. This is the trend in tenniswear this season. Very much in keeping with the spring/summer fashion trends, the designs are bold and graphic, featuring a palette of white, black and the shades in between. Above are nine of the season’s most winning combinations — dresses, skirts and tops so chic, they will keep you looking stylish even when the match is over.

Share the Ride: The Citi Bikes

The Citi Bike bike sharing program is up and running in New York City, and those blue Citibank logo-ed bikes have taken over the city streets (and sidewalks). Bicycle commuting is becoming increasingly popular in major US cities, and it’s great to see that NYC has jumped in on the healthy and eco-friendly transportation kick. While I myself am an avid subway rider, I wanted to give the bikes and the sharing system a try. There has been much written about the program, pros and cons, and I thought I would interesting test it out and share my experience.

Firstly, let me talk about the bikes. At Style Of Sport, while technical performance is the starting point for anything we feature, the style is what we love the most. I did a story a couple of weeks ago titled The Urban(e) Cyclist, all about the chic and distinctive style that has evolved with the popularity of city commuter cycling. My first exposure to a bike sharing program was in Paris. Their simple gray bikes that blend harmoniously with the Parisien scenery is a preferred look for me, but this is New York, where the taxis are bright yellow and now our bikes are bright blue. While I am appreciative Citibank’s sponsorship of this program, I wish the branding was toned down a bit, so we didn’t feel like we were riding around doing free advertising, especially given all the beautiful bikes there are to buy.

So with a few errands to run downtown today, I thought this would be a great opportunity to take the Citi Bikes for a ride. I logged on www.citibikenyc.com to see what I needed to do to get started and found out day passes were available for $9.95 at any kiosk stand. I downloaded the Citi Bike app so I would have a map of all the bike stations handy on my phone. I live on the upper east side of Manhattan and there no stations above 59th st, so I had to subway it down to begin my journey. With a stop at Rizzoli on 57th, I headed over to the Citi Bike station at 56th and 6th. Read More

As commuter cycling has grown increasingly popular in major metropolitan cities, it has borne a distinct urban cycling style. As this is not cycling for recreation, but for transportation, the look is one that needs to transition easily from sport into workplace attire… albeit casual.

Europeans have been using bicycles as a form of transportation for a long time now and the cycling tradition is rich in history. The design of the bicycles and apparel we see on US city streets is inspired by cities like London, Amsterdam and Paris, but with its own uniquely American style. It is rugged but refined, elegant but tough.

Urban commuter bikes and their riders are built to take the beating of city streets but this breed handles it with style. Ones bike is a fashion statement and there are so many beautiful ones on the market, in addition to accessories likes helmets, shoes, saddles and and even bells. Above and below are a few of our favorites to keep you looking stylish while riding around town. So get out there, be safe, have fun and get to work on time!

Into The Woods: Camp Style

CLICK ABOVE TO SHOP

Around this time of year, as kids are getting out of school and gearing up for their summer vacations, I grow nostalgic for camp. My sister and I went to Camp Se-Sa-Ma-Ca in Raymond, NH, near to Lake Winnipesauwkee, where we bunked in cabins in the woods, the ceilings of which were carved with the name and year of every camper who had ever stayed there before us. We filled our camp trunks from a checklist of “What-to-Bring”, each item seemingly with the word “warm” or “sturdy” in front, ready for any outdoor adventure the summer would bring.

While all the modern hi-tech gear might be more functional, you can’t beat the old school camper style. It warms the heart to see it’s all still around, from the original brands and new ones too. Some things never go out of style. Although we can’t spend our summers at camp anymore, we can still have all the gear and cozy classics that remind us of all the fun we had.

Summer Sneaker News: Plush & Superflex

LEFT SOLE: NEW BALANCE MINIMUS HI-REZ; RIGHT SOLE: ADIDAS CLIMACOOL AERATE 2.0; TOP RIGHT: SAUCONY VIRRATA (SHOWN IN FLEX); BOTTOM RIGHT: NIKE FREE 5.0 (SHOWN IN FLEX)

The word in running and training shoes this summer is FLEX, with soles that are cut, sliced and grooved to allow the foot to move the way nature intended. Inspired by the minimalist and barefoot running movement, these shoes take those principles but add the cushioning that has proven to be more of a necessity since the trend started.

Besides the comfort and ride, what we love are all the bright and poppy colors in which to go for a run or to the gym this summer. After all, fun shoes are half the reason to train! Above and below are a few of our season’s best picks. No need to change shoes when the workout is done.

It is the most minimal of their running and training shoes with an 00mm drop from heel to toe. Somewhat amphibian like, 42 independent cushioned pods move naturally with the foot to deliver unparalleled flexibility and underfoot sensation.

ADIDAS CLIMACOOL AERATE 2.0. Very flexible and extra cool for summer is the Climacool Aerate with its anatomically shaped perforated footbed and articulated midsole for increased airflow and movement. The OrthoLite sockliner provides long-lasting cushioning, excellent moisture management and breathable comfort. The Schwinn Stingray

HERMOSA BEACH 1967 BY LEROY GRANNIS

Al Fritz, creator of the Schwinn Sting-Ray passed away last week at the age of 88. The Schwinn Sting-Ray, with its chopper-style handlebars and banana seat, has sold millions since its introduction in the 1960s. His “creation” however was actually inspired by a trend he spotted in Southern California of kids customizing and souping-up their bikes to look like motorcycles. Realizing the mass-market potential, Fritz built a prototype which he called the “Sting-Ray”, because the shape of the handlebars reminded him of a swimming stingray.

Despite initial corportate resistance, the first Sting-Ray was produced in 1963 and went on to great commercial success before it was discontinued in the early 1980s. Various models were produced during that time, including the iconic “Orange Krate”.

ROW 1: SUMMIT CLASS AT EXCEED PHYSICAL CULTURE; WORKOUT STATION AT REFINE METHOD; CROSSFIT ROPE TRAINING; ROW 2: TRX AT EXCEED; KETTLEBELLS; THE FHITTING ROOM; ROW 2: REFINE METHOD; JUMP ROPE AT YMCA; CONCEPT ROWER INTERVAL AT EXCEED

What’s old is new again and nowhere is this more apparent than in fitness right now. Extremely popular are classes like CrossFit, Bootcamps, and other circuit training programs that incorporate the basic tried and true exercises and equipment. Kettlebells, ropes, medicine balls, Concept Rowers, and most fundamentally, one’s own bodyweight, are just some of the equipment used in these classes — all of which have stood the test of time and been proven extremely effective.

In circuit training, one moves from exercise to exercise, staying in constant motion and keeping the heart rate up, resting one body part while working another. The result is real athletic strength and conditioning that gets the body ready for any activity and looking fit, too!  The beauty of these movements is they can be taken on the road and done on the go. STYLE OF SPORT asked Ed Cashin, Co-Founder of Exceed Physical Culture in NYC, to design a quick circuit-on-the-go which can be done anywhere and anytime.

Ed Cashin is a nationally recognized leader in the field of functional fitness with a 25-year career that includes expertise in TRX, Russian Kettlebell and sport-specific training.  At Exceed, Cashin and his team of trainers offer a full range of classes that integrate Cashin’s SUMMIT method (Strength and Ultra Metabolic Movement Interval Training), a fitness regimen which allows clients to train more efficiently and effectively with a combination of high intensity cardio and functional strength moves. While classes might utilize various pieces of equipment, most exercises can be done with one’s bodyweight only for an equally intense workout. Read More

In the summer of 1968, three men – climber and surfer Yvon Chouinard, climber and skier Doug Tompkins, and champion skier Dick Dorworth – set off from California in an old van to surf, ski and climb their way down to the southern end of Argentina. Their ultimate goal was to climb the legendary mountain in Patagonia, Cerro Fitz Roy, summited only once previously. Told Endless Summer style, the DVD “Mountain of Storms” (screengrabs above and below), is the documentary of the road trip that changed their lives and inspired Chouinard to found the company Patagonia.

The Calendar of Triathlon

MAY has arrived and with it brought a new STYLE OF SPORT CALENDAR. The theme this month is TRIATHLON. While May is actually National Bike Month, we were ahead of the curve and featured bicycles on our March Calendar of Bicycles. With summer coming, we wanted to feature lots of outdoor sports, so get ready for 31 days of all the hottest Swim/Bike/Run gear, apparel, and accessories for you seasoned competitors and those new to the sport.

CLICK BELOW TO SHOP

MAY 31: FELT BICYCLES DA1Here we are at the last day of the month and with so many incredible triathlon bikes to feature, we wanted to put one more in the spotlight. Comparable to Specialized’s top of the line S-Works Shiv and priced at a meager $10,329, the sleek and sexy DA1 from Felt Bicycles clocks in at the world’s fastest time trial bike and weapon of choice for the best triathletes on the international circuit. The focus at Felt is on optimizing rider position to maximize aerodynamic efficiency, comfort being a key factor in the equation. The frame is constructed from UHC Ultimate+Nano carbon fiber and optimized for Shimano Di2 11 Speed electronic shifting. The result is a race machine that is proven to be fast and responsive when the competition requires the best.

MAY 30: 2XU COMPRESSION CALF GUARDS. 2XU makes an extensive array of compression apparel and accessories very popular with triathletes and endurance athletes. These tight-fitting lycra garments are designed to support the muscles to reduce fatigue and injury. They increase oxygen flow to the muscles for improved training, faster recovery and stronger performance. The calf muscles are particularly prone to strain with the 3 sports of triathlon, and the 2XU Compression Calf Guards are a nice option in the warm summer months. They provide 50 SPF sun protection, plus they can be worn under a wetsuit making transition times faster.

MAY 29: KINETIC BY KURT ROCK AND ROLL TRAINER. Most triathletes and cyclists use an indoor trainer during those months when the weather prevents outdoor cycling. Some athletes use them regardless as great way to train on the bike in a controlled environment. The Kinetic by Kurt Rock and Roll Trainer takes the indoor cycling workout to a new level as the only trainer produced that mimics the natural side to side movement of the bike when cycling outdoors. Kinetic is recognized as one of the leading makers of indoor trainers and guarantees the construction and technology of their products with a lifetime guarantee.

MAY 28: ZOGGS PREDATOR FLEX REACTOR PHOTOCHROMATIC GOGGLES. There are lots of great open water swim goggles on the market, but these photochromatic goggles from Zoggs have to be one of the coolest options out there, with lenses that automatically adjust for changing light conditions. The flexible frame provides a secure, comfortable and leak-free fit, while the Curved Lens Technology allows a distortion-free, full 180 degree field of vision.

MAY 27: CLIF SHOT BLOKS. Newest to the line of Clif Shot products are the very tasty Clif Shot Bloks, each one providing 33 calories worth of organic carbohydrate and electrolyte fuel, critical during long training rides and runs. The Bloks come in an assortment of flavors so delicious you might be tempted to eat them even when you’re not in training!

MAY 26: PEARL IZUMI TRI FLY IV CARBON SHOES. A triathlon specific cycling shoe is an important accessory for any triathlete looking to speed up their performance. We featured the high-end S-Works Trivent back on May 6, geared toward the elite level triathlete. The Pearl Izumi Tri Fly IV Carbon is an excellent shoe for all levels, and reasonably priced as well. It is extremely lightweight with a ventilated mesh upper and fully lined for sockless comfort. It features the large heel loop critical for triathletes for easy pull-on in the T1 swim to bike transition. The stiff carbon Power Plate optimizes the transfer of power into the pedal stroke and the concave shaping provides great overall support.

MAY 25: FUELBELT. For long distance training runs, continuous hydration is essential on the road and the FuelBelt is the best way to keep water and your preferred electrolyte beverages handy. The FuelBelt is available with 2-4 bottles, an integrated gear pouch, and is now in a variety of fun summer colors!

MAY 24: ISM ADAMO SADDLES. Adamos are considered the most comfortable performance bike saddles. The patented ISM design has eliminated the nose of the traditional saddle, which tends to force too much weight onto sensitive soft tissue, and directs the pressure onto the more supportive sit bones. The are a number of different models, designed for different kinds of competition and levels of riders. The Attack is the newest road racing saddle, just voted “Best In Class” by Triathlete Magazine, but The Breakaway and Podium are also very popular. The Saddle Selector on the ISM website, helps narrow down which saddle is best for you.

MAY 23: ADIDAS TRAINING SANDALS. You’ll be stylin’ round the pool deck this summer, before and after laps, in the hot collection of training slides from Adidas for both men and women. These no-slip flip-flops and sandals will pamper your feet with the super cushy Fitfoam® of the Chilwyanda and massage nubs of the Adissage. All come in a fantastic array of fun summer colors!

MAY 22: ZIPP 404 FIRECREST CARBON CLINCHERS. Despite a number of excellent competitors, Zipp has dominated the aero wheel market for many years and the 404 Firecrest Carbon Clinchers are a new milestone in race wheel design. Their revolutionary rim shape is not only incredibly aerodynamic and light, but has resulted in handling more stable than any other Zipp wheel. In addition, a wider brake track allows more air in the tires for a silky smooth ride. The unmatched combination of superior aerodynamics, ride quality, strength and handling make these wheels the ones to beat.

MAY 21: CASTELLI ROSSO CORSA CLASSIC GLOVES. Chic Italian style and technical performance come together in this classic glove. Reticulated gel-padded palms, breathable mesh back and an anatomically designed shaped provide great comfort and protection. The smooth interior finish, slip-on wrists and central pull tab make them easy to put on and take off. The microsuede wipe panel on the thumb is another appreciated feature, especially out there on the road.

MAY 20: TIFOSI OPTICS FOTOTEC/HIGH SPEED RED. While interchangeable lenses are a great option, even better are photochromatic lenses that adjust automatically to changing light conditions, much more convenient during the course of a long run or ride. Tifosi Fototec lenses with variable tint technology transition from light to dark very fast and provide 100% protection against harmful UVA/UVB rays. The “High Speed Red” option is ideal for triathletes as it sharpens contrast, highlighting details the road ahead. The TEMPT is a small-medium frame, ideal for women, but still offers good coverage. Made of Grilamid TR-90, characterized by an extremely high bending strength, these sunglasses have adjustable hydrophilic rubber ear and nose pieces for a customizable, comfortable and no-slip fit. The Cyclist’s Spin Class

Recently opened in a bright and lofty brownstone on Manhattan’s Upper East Side is T2 Multisport, a cycling training center for competitive athletes and recreational “Spinners” alike. T2 is founded by Robert Pennino, Founder and CEO of the Terrier-Tri Triathlon, Cycling & Marathon Club. Pennino’s goal was to create a triathlon training facility in NYC, where none existed, open to all athletes, teams and coaches. T2 stands for “Transition 2”, the transition stage from bike to run in a triathlon.

The cheerful space does not feel like your typical NYC gym, but a cool hangout for cyclists and triathletes. The walls are covered with riders own bicycles and 20 beautiful new Specialized Allez bicycles. Wanting to appeal not just to competitive athletes, but to those who might not have their own bikes, Pennino engaged Specialized as a partner. They loved the concept of a “Spin Class on a Real Bike”.

The indoor cycling at T2 is done in group classes on CompuTrainers, computerized bicycle resistance trainers which simulate real courses and real riding. CompuTrainers and other bicycle resistance trainers are a regular part of training for cyclists and triathletes. Pennino wanted to offer this kind of cycling workout to “spinners” as well. As Lucy Danziger, Editor-In-Chief of Self Magazine, a competitive triathlete, Ironman finisher and investor in the facility says, “CompuTrainers are highly beneficial for overall fitness. It’s a tool all the pros use. Even those who can ride outside all year long choose to train indoors because it’s such an efficient workout”. Read More

How To Get This!

PHOTOGRAPH BY FABRIZIO FERRI

This week in THE TRAINER’S CORNER, we are thrilled to have renowned celebrity and supermodel trainer DAVID KIRSCH! A fitness and wellness leader for more than 20 years, Kirsch has trained some of the most famous women in the world including Liv Tyler, Naomi Campbell, Julia Roberts, Heidi Klum, Linda Evangelista, Karolina Kurkova, Kerry Washington and most recently, Kate Upton – getting her in cover ready shape for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue. His clients refer to him as a body sculptor, and his specialty – a beautiful backside! Kirsch says “No two clients’ bodies are alike. The same can be said about their butts. Some want more booty, others less; some want it higher and rounder; some smaller and tighter”.

With that in mind we present David Kirsch’s “Beautiful Butt Camp” designed to address all these issues and more! The key to the following exercise circuit, Kirsch says, is to “Put Your Brain in Your Butt”. Whether it’s a lunge or squat, anchor in your heel and not the ball of your foot. The objective is to burn the glutes, not the quads. If you’re feeling it in your quads, STOP and readjust!  The following set of exercises should be done as a circuit – one right after the other without rest. Perform 15 repetitions for each exercise. Good luck, have fun, and kick ass!

SQUATS

1) Start with your feet shoulder-width distance apart and perfectly upright posture.
2) Bend at the knees, keeping your weight over your heels until your thighs are parallel to the floor.
*Modification: Leaning against a wall will provide extra balance. Your feet should be 18-24 inches from the wall, and shoulder-width distance apart. Squat as deeply as your knees and back allow.
*Modification: If you’re looking for more of a challenge, grab a pair of hand weights. Read More

The classes utilize rowers, free weights, kettlebells, suspension trainers, plyo boxes, medicine balls and more in what they call a FHIX (Functional High Intensity Mix) of exercise moves. Each class is unique but always delivers their signature five essential building blocks for optimal results: (1) functional movements (2) strength training (3) high intensity intervals (4) total body focus (5) highly varied exercises. Following the trend of a la carte fitness, this is a great workout to add to your fitness platter!

The Trainers Corner

Although there is still a chill in the air, it’s April and Spring has officially sprung. Summer and all its body baring clothing are just weeks away. If you’ve been slacking this winter, its time to get the rear in gear! Week to week from THE TRAINERS CORNER we will be bringing you tips, workouts, gear and apparel to get you motivated, looking good and feeling great.

This week in THE TRAINERS CORNER, we have SoulCycle Master Instructor and STYLE OF SPORT Contributing Fitness Editor, Stacey Griffith, who has created a special SOS workout, the “10×10”. It’s a 10 minute, down and dirty, quickie workout designed to get the job done fast. There are 10 basic exercises everyone knows how to do, performed for 1 minute each. Other than a jump rope, no equipment is required, so this routine can be done anywhere anytime. Plus we’ve got some hot tunes to go with it!

So if you haven’t been working out, this is a great place to start, and if you have, it’s a great extra 10 minute boost of power to add to your routine.

THE ROUTINE

1. JUMP ROPE
2. PUSH-UPS. Straight legs or knees on the floor
3. SQUATS. Keep the knees at 90 degrees!
4. CRUNCHES. Legs up, knees bent, feet on the floor…. your choice
5. JUMPING JACKS
6. TRICEP DIPS. Can be done off a bench, chair or sofa. With arms behind you and heels on the floor, lower your butt towards the floor and use your triceps to push back up again.
7. LUNGES. Alternate legs and keep the knees at 90 degrees.
8. PLANK: Arms at 90 degrees, forearms on the floor, legs straight, flat back.

Hydro-Planing

TYLER WARREN’S “SOAP BAR TRIO”MINI-SIMMONS INSPIRED SURFBOARDS

In the early 1950s, a surfer named Bob Simmons began shaping multi-finned “planing hulls” that were an evolutionary link to surfing’s Polynesian roots, but utilized the principles of modern hydrodynamic theory. Employed by Douglas Aircraft in 1952, as were Ray and Charles Eames, Simmons’ distinctive planing hulls embodied the same aesthetics of aerodynamic form that were a central element in mid-century modern design. Tracking Devices

fitband2

There is a proliferation of sleek new digital wristwear on the market that charts your every move. These stylish tracking devices are designed to motivate by monitoring your progress, sharing your sports data with friends, and adding some entertainment to your workout. Here are 6 fun and functional wristbands and sport watches that offer a variety of performance enhancing features and look cool too.

NIKE+SPORTWATCH $169

This very stylish watch offers a host of functions including GPS tracking, average and current pace, distance, splits, elapsed time and more.  It connects directly to your computer with a built in USB and syncs with Nike software that shows you a heat map of your run, with speed, elevation, and mile times highlighted. It’s not the most comfortable on long runs, but a beautifully designed timepiece that makes you want to get out there and go.

FITBIT FLEX $99.95

Not just for running, the Fitbit Flex is one of the hot new activity trackers out there right now. Not only does it monitor all your daily activity like steps taken, distance traveled and calories burned, but hours and quality of sleep as well. Plus, FitBit automatically syncs with your smartphone. It’s slim and stylish, available in a variety of colors, and a fun wrist accessory.

NIKE FUEL BAND $149

Another fitness tracker wristband and another Nike product (there is also the Nike+SportBand) is the Nike FuelBand. Like the Fitbit Flex, the FuelBand tracks all your daily activity and converts it into NikeFuel, the metric system and social network by which fitness goals and achievements are measured.  The Nike FuelBand is available in a sophisticated palette of translucent white, charcoal and matte black, with an LED display that illuminates your progress (and the time) throughout the day.

GARMIN FORERUNNER 610 $350

Garmin is one of the most recognized names in handheld GPS devices and the Forerunner 610 is their top of the line GPS sport watch. The touchscreen lets you tap and swipe through all the prerequisite sportwatch speed and distance functions, and also includes a Virtual Partner and a Virtual Racer, as a built-in pacer and competitor. The Forerunner 610 is waterproof and shock resistant, and syncs wirelessly with your computer as well.

SOLEUS GPS 3.0 $199

The Soleus GPS 3.0 is a more basic but easy to use stylish GPS watch that tracks your speed, distance, lap and mile times. With the addition of a heart rate monitor, it is a great all around training tool at a very reasonable price.

JAWBONE UP $129

Another entry into the hot wristband activity tracker catagory is the Jawbone Up, a flexible rubber bracelet that monitors your every movement, calorie and wink of sleep. Most unique is the Idle Alert feature, which reminds you to move when you’ve been sitting too long.

Spring Training Is Now In Session

Row 1: ROXY OUTDOOR FITNESS; PEAK PERFORMANCE; ADIDAS ENERGY BOOST; Row 2: NIKE FLYKNIT LUNAR 1; AEROSPACE; Row 3: AEROSPEED JUMP ROPE; SUPA DUPA GREEN JUICE FROM JUICE GENERATION; BARI

We are almost midway through March and the first day of Spring is just about a week away! Summer will be here before you know it, but there is still plenty of time to get the body fit and looking good for all the summer fun to come. And so we begin SPRING TRAINING… a regular round up of workouts, gear, apparel, nutrition and other tools to get you ready for all that summer has in store.

THE LOOK: Why dress like a gym rat when you can go surfer style! Roxy has just launched Roxy Outdoor Fitness, a new line of  shorts, tanks, jackets, leggings and more, that combines boardsport style with the technical performance required for all your outdoor fitness pursuits.

THE SHOE: New from Adidas is the Energy Boost running shoe. It has great cushioning, is lightweight and durable. Unlike regular EVA foam, which loses its bounce in cold temperatures, the Boost foam is temperature-resistant and keeps the spring in your step under all extreme weather conditions. Meanwhile Nike has just released the Nike Flyknit Lunar 1+, which combines the unrivaled style of the Flyknit with the cushioning of the LunarGlide.

THE WORKOUT: Having had so much fun trying all the different workouts in my 31 Days Of Fitness in January, I have been back on the fitness beat, checking out some of the places I missed in the first round. I took a class at Bari a couple of weeks ago and was thrilled to see Aerobics are alive and well. What everybody now calls “Dance Cardio”, which is very popular at gyms and studios everywhere, is very reminiscent of the aerobics classes I remember from the days of Molly Fox and Jeff Martin, studios which dominated the NYC fitness scene in the 90’s. Bari has its own unique take on the trend, with a custom system of bands suspended from the ceiling, on which arms moves are performed during the cardio workout. There are a variety other kinds of classes to choose from as well. The environment is very cheerful and its a fun place to get your sweat on. Read More

“Oscar Sunday” Night At The Sport Flicks

RAGING BULL (1980)

Its Oscar Sunday and time for another installment of “Sunday Night At The Sports Flicks”. While the obvious choice would have been to go with only Oscar winning sport movies, there would have been quite a few boxing films in the mix, so for variety’s sake I decided to open it up to Oscar nominated films as well. For a fun trivia question, what are the three sports films to win Best Picture? Answer is at the bottom of the post. As always, click the image for movie preview.

Directed by Martin Scorcese, Raging Bull is the based on the rise and fall, life story of 1940’s middleweight champion, Jake LaMotta, a self-destructive boxer played by Robert DeNiro in his Academy Award winning role. The film launched the Hollywood careers of Joe Pesci and Cathy Moriarty, who also received Oscar nominations. DeNiro famously gained 60 pounds for the role to accurately portray LaMotta in his later years.

BREAKING AWAY (1979)

Academy award winner for Best Screenplay and nominee for Best Picture, Breaking Away is a charming movie about four friends coming to terms with life after high school. Doomed to live in the college town of Bloomington, Indiana, where the local kids are nicknamed “cutters”, a derogatory reference to their quarry working, blue-collar families, there exists a social struggle with the students of the nearby university. One of the friends is a talented cyclist, who in order to win the affections of one the college girls and emulate his cycling heroes, poses as an Italian exchange student. It is by chance an encounter with an Italian racing team that leads him and his friends to a cycling showdown with the local college boys where the true champions are victorious.

CHARIOTS OF FIRE 1981

Chariots of Fire is indeed one of the three sport movies to win Best Picture. The film is the true story of two British track athletes competing in the 1924 Summer Olympics: one is a devout Scottish missionary who runs for God; the other is Jewish and is running to escape the anti-semitism and class struggles he faces in Cambridge society. The movie’s opening sequence, set to Vangelis’s iconic theme song, is probably one of the most recognized in movie history.

moneyball-pic06

MONEYBALL (2011)

The most Oscar nominated sports film with six, including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, Moneyball is based on the true story of Oakland A’a manager Billy Beane, played by Brad Pitt, forced to reinvent his team on a lean budget. Inspired by a young Yale grad played by Jonah Hill, Beane defies conventional baseball scouting wisdom by using a controversial method of computer generated analysis called Sabermetrics. He puts together a winning team made up of flawed and overlooked players, all of whom have an ability to get on base and score runs, outsmarting and beating the richer clubs.

Tasty Little Bubbles Of Energy

There are hundreds of energy drinks on the market, many the equivalent of putting gasoline in your tank… literally. The energy high comes with a crashing low, that is both physically and mentally depleting. There are a number though, like E-Boost, David Kirsch’s Energy Bubbles and ZipFizz, with all natural ingredients that offer their pick-me-up power not with heart racing stimulants and chemicals, but vitamins, minerals and herbs recognized for a variety of additional health benefits. The ones I like are all individually packaged for on-the-go convenience and easily mixed with water. They are all refreshingly tasty as well!

DAVID KIRSCH ENERGY BUBBLES. From fitness and nutritional guru David Kirsch comes this effervescent orange flavored drink that provides a natural energy boost. David’s formula contains Taurine, Panax Ginseng, B6, B12 and other vitamins and nutrients to naturally energize both body and mind. It also has the special addition of chromium to help reduce body fat and build muscle.  ENERGY BUBBLES are a perfect pick me up before or during your workout, or any other time of day.

EBOOST. Available in Super Berry, Orange, Pink Lemonade and Acai Pomegranate, in the convenience of a shot or powder, EBOOST is packed with energy vitamins like C, D and B12, and super-nutrients like Green Tea, Quercetin, 5-HTP and Resveratrol, recognized for their anti-oxidant, immune and mood boosting benefits. EBOOST is sweetened with Stevia and contains no sugar, artificial flavors or colors.

ZIPFIZZ. I recently discovered this product at the Outdoor Retailer show, initially attracted by the cool packaging. ZIPFIZZ is an all-natural, great tasting drink-mix powder that delivers a revitalizing burst of energy to the body’s fuel system. Promoted as a hydrating energy drink, ZIPFIZZ is super charged with Vitamin C, B12 and potassium, among other ingredients especially beneficial for those traveling to high altitude (as I can attest having tested it out on a recent trip to Snowmass, CO). It comes in a variety of delicious flavors as well!

ACLI-MATE. Another great one for preventing high-altitude symptoms, I discovered ACLI-MATE in the very lofty ski resort of Crested Butte, CO. Available in a variety of tasty flavors, ACLI-MATE Mountain Sport drink contains the hydrating and energizing vitamins B and C, CoQ10, AND potassium, in addition to select botanicals like Rhodiola root, Schizandra berry and Ginko leaf extracts that provide a hydrating boost of energy both on and off the mountain.

EMERGEN-C. Really the original, this immune boosting blend of Vitamin C, nutrients, electrolytes and anti-oxidents, naturally replenish energy levels and enhance metabolic functions. Now available in a multitude of flavors like Tangerine, Mangosteen, Pink Lemonade and Triple Berry Blue, there is the tried and true Original Formula, in addition to Specialty blends like Multi-Vitamin and the sport specific Electro Mix.

“Cinelli: The Art And Design Of The Bicycle”

CIN2

CIN3

Last November, Rizzoli published a beautiful book called “Cinelli: The Art and Design of the Bicycle”, an illustrated retrospective of more than sixty-five years of one of the most pioneering and influential names in bicycle design. Since Cino Cinelli began making frames in Italy in the 1940s, Cinelli has set the standards for bicycle and component design, and continues to be one of the most prominent names in the fixed gear or “Fixie” culture of custom bikes and components.

Those with no interest in cycling, it’s culture, or history, might enjoy the conversation with Cinelli president Antonio Colombo and fashion designer Sir Paul Smith, which opens the book. As it turns out Smith began competitive cycling as a boy, and it was his early love of the beauty of the bicycle that was the beginning of his appreciation for design. Surprisingly Columbo, as an industrial designer, as always been inspired by fashion and design, and consisitently sought to transform the bicycle into rideable art.

The current popularity of the very hip fixed gear bike, the very chic European city bike, and very fast racing bike is as much inspired by the desire to own a bicycle as to own a beautiful thing. “Cinelli: The Art and Design of the Bicycle” takes a look at how form and function meet to create beauty in this everyday object. The Calendar: 28 Days Of Sunglasses

The calendar theme for this month is SUNGLASSES! It’s a short month and it’s going to be tough to narrow it down to 28 pairs of sunglasses, but here goes!

CLICK BELOW TO SHOP!

FEB.28: RAY-BAN WAYFARER. Here we are at the last day of February’s 28 Days Of Sunglasses. There are still so many more shades to feature, but it seemed right to give this final selection to another iconic Ray-Ban style, the only brand to get two days this month. The Wayfarer was first introduced in 1956 and is credited with being the best selling sunglass of all time. Originally a black frame with gray lenses, there are now hundreds of styles and colors available.

FEB.27: OLIVER PEOPLES. Since their first retail store opened in 1986 on Sunset Blvd. in West Hollywood, Oliver Peoples has been the “it” eyewear brand. Originally selling authentic, unworn vintage frames, they were the first to bring back the retro style sunglasses that old Hollywood had made famous. Aviators, horn-rimmed, clip-ons are just a few of the iconic styles that have been evergreens in their collection, and I myself have been a loyal customer since the early 90’s!

FEB.26: WARBY PARKER. Warby Parker has recently been in the news for having been retained by Google to design the look of their new internet glasses, and also for a recent investment by J.Crew CEO Mickey Drexler in the company. Warby Parker is clearly a very successful and hip e-commerce site selling their own line of trendy but affordable eyewear, with showrooms in major US cities as well. Personally I’m loving the Griffin, Appleton, and Everett!

FEB 25: MICHAEL KORS. Lime green, magenta, orange, lavender, blue… how to pick just one color of these fab spring toned, clear framed aviators!

FEB.24: VUARNET. Created by Olympic champion, Jean Vuarnet, who won the Downhill Skiing gold medal in 1960 at Squaw Valley, CA, and renowned French optician Roger Pouilloux, who had provided the eyewear to the French Ski Federation, Vuarnet is another iconic ski and lifestyle sunglass brand. The Skilynx lens, offers maximum protection in the mountains, where the suns UV rays are intensified by the snow and altitude. The yellow/green mineral lenses with anti-glare and silver bi-shaded coatings maximize optical clarity. They make everything look warm and sunny too!

FEB.23: OLIVER GOLDSMITHFounded in 1926 by P. Oliver Goldsmith, OG sunglasses have have been the trend defining eyewear since the 1960’s and 1970’s, when sunglasses went from eye protection to a fashion statement. The eyewear of choice by such 20th Century style icons as Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn,  Peter Sellers and The Rolling Stones, in addition to the design houses of Dior and Givenchy, Oliver Goldsmith continues to create the most stylish of sunglasses. The gorgeous “Manhattan” created 1960, the cool “Karl”from 1967, the mod “Y-Not”from 1966 are just a few of the original designs still available today. Check out their vintage archive for fun too and see the original Space Visor, Butterfly and Tennis Raquet sunglasses!

FEB.22: CARRERA. Another iconic brand, Carrera has been making sunglasses and googles since 1956, but they became hot in the early 80’s with the CARRERA PORSCHE DESIGN collection. The look is still going strong and has some swagger, so get ready for stares if you want to rock these shades!

The NFL On Instagram

nfl2

Although I am not really a big football fan, other than cheering for the home team, I have been a follower of the NFL Instagram feed all season. These little square photographs that look like poloroids, faded with filters and framed with rough borders, have been given a special vintage quality that harken back to those early Sports Illustrated days. But it is also the image itself that is different. It is not the big play that is captured but something more intimate and almost innocent, as if the NFL were a high school football game.

So with the Super Bowl just a few days away and only 2 NFL teams left on the playing field, I thought I would share some of my visual highlights from the season.

The sporty girl gets dirty and when it’s time to clean up she likes her soap to leave her smelling naturally fresh. Flowers like jasmine and freesia, fruits like lemon and lime, herbs like verbena and sage are some of her favorites from nature’s scents. She appreciates nice packaging too.

ROW 1: RAPHA GINGHAM  LONG SLEEVE SHIRT; SATURDAYS SURF CROSBY ST, NYC; ROW 2: VANS AT DQM; NIKE STORE 21 MERCER; PREMIERE ISSUE OF SATURDAYS MAGAZINE; ROW 3: EARLY TOUR DE FRANCE; LIMITED EDITION KAI MALIE STAND-UP PADDLEBOARD AT ANTHROPOLOGIE; DQM NYC; ROW 4: PRO TEAM JACKETS AT RAPHA; HELMET FROM ADELINE ADELINE;  ADELINE ADELINE IN TRIBECA

The word “bespoke” conjures up an image of refined sophistication that one does not usually associate with skateboarding, surfing and cycling, but there is a whole new generation of hip and posh sporting goods stores that fit this description. In lower Manhattan, the surf shop SATURDAYS, skate shop DQM, Nike store 21 MERCER, and bicycle store ADELINE ADELINE have all opened in the last few years designed with a cool and minimal aesthetic. In addition, there are online stores like RAPHA, which design and carry retro cycling apparel and sportswear reminiscent of the early days of the Tour de France. Even clothing stores like Antropologie are following suit carrying a limited edition Kai Malie stand-up paddleboard and Van Heesch Copper Bicycle that patinas with age. Below are a few of my favorite “Bespoke” sporting goods stores. I am NYC based but love to hear about others in the US and abroad!

ADELINE ADELINE.Located in Tribeca, NYC, this very bespoke bicycle boutique sells only the most beautifully designed city bikes and accessories in the tradition of those seen on streets of Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and the English countryside. The store has a refined Scandinavian aesthetic that showcases these two wheeled works of art, in addition to a selection of helmets, bags and other accessories perfectly curated to compliment the bicycles they sell.

NIKE 21 MERCER. Tucked away in the middle of Soho, its hard to imagine this understated boutique is actually Nike store. 21 Mercer carries a specialized and hard-to find selection of Nike footwear and apparel, curated to appeal more to the design and fashion oriented customer than the athlete. 21 Mercer is home to the exclusive Nike Bespoke program, where customers can design their sneakers from scratch with almost unlimited design elements during a NIKEiD customization session. The boutique also carries limited edition pieces from the brand’s NSW line, a collection of refined and sophisticated off-field apparel.

SATURDAYS SURF NYC. In 2009, Saturdays opened its flagship store in SoHo as New York’s premier downtown surf shop. Carrying not just surf gear and apparel, but books, fine art and other accessories, Saturdays represents the lifestyle of the urban surfer. The clean open design, espresso bar, and garden patio in back have established it as much as a hang out destination as a store. Saturdays now designs and produces its own menswear line designed to appeal to the surfer and hipster alike. There are also addional stores in the West Village and Tokyo.

RAPHA PERFORMANCE ROADWEAR. Rapha Performance Roadwear is a premium sportswear and lifestyle brand focused on road bicycle racing, clothing and accessories. It is an online emporium of performance roadwear, accessories, publications and events, all celebrating the glory, culture and history of road riding.

DQM. When DQM first opened in 2003, on a nondescript street in Manhattan’s Bowery district, it had just twenty styles of sneakers, a few skateboards and five styles of house brand t-shirts. Founded by professional skateboarder Chris Keeffe, born and raised in New York City, DQM quickly found the support of the neighborhood and the downtown scene. Remaining true to its roots in skateboarding, DQM has grown to become one of New York’s premiere location for sneakers, menswear and skate goods, as well as a fully-fledged brand in its own right, with clothing and accessories sold in select locations around the world. In 2011, DQM opened its second store, The General, in partnership with Vans, in a landmark building in SoHo district, bringing one the most impressive collections of Vans to the East Coast.

Life’s a Beach and Then You Bodysurf

Spreads from “THE PLIGHT OF THE TORPEDO PEOPLE” by Keith Malloy (top) & “LIFE’S A BEACH” by Martin Parr

I received my Artbook / D.A.P. spring catalogue this week and in it were two books on a spread: Keith Malloy’s The Plight of the Torpedo People and Martin Parr’s Life’s a Beach. I’m not sure if the intent was to show the two extremes of a day at the beach but I loved the juxtaposition.

The Plight of the Torpedo People by Keith Malloy is a collection of photographs, frame grabs and personal essays documenting the making of his first film, “Come Hell or Highwater”, about the sport of bodysurfing. While Malloy is most widely known as a surfer, his exploration into the world of bodysurfing began some 10 years ago in a quest to reconnect with the ocean. “Come Hell or High Water” looks at the history, culture and beauty of the sport of bodysurfing, alongside the purity of experience that is riding a wave.

cyc2a
Spinning, triathlons and road riding are all extremely popular at the moment, and chances are you are participating in at least one of these activities. If so, you are in need of a good cycling shoe. Now as we are talking about shoes here, you want them to be kinda fab. In sports however, performance is key. What is most critical in a cycling shoe is that they be lightweight for efficiency, have a stiff sole for power, good ventilation, and adjustable straps for a secure and comfortable fit. Above I present 8 that have it all and are pretty hot looking too. So yes, you can have your cake and eat it too, as long as you keep riding!

Gabby Reece talks to SoulCycle’s Stacey Griffith

Left:Debby Hymowitz; Right:Courtesy of Gabby Reece

I STARTED GOING to SoulCycle about four years ago, beaten up and kind of broken by my first NYC Marathon. Unable to run, having finished with a stress fracture in my femur, I was looking for a replacement to give me those running endorphins and keep my marathon physique. I’d heard the buzz about SoulCycle, but really the only thing I cared about in a spinning class was good music played loud–which was surprisingly hard to find in NYC. Give me that and I could pedal forever.

Conveniently, SoulCycle had just opened on the Upper East Side in Manhattan near my house and so off I went to my first class. What I found was much more than I expected. It had the hip vibe of a cool club, but one where everybody was welcome. The whole look of the place– the candles burning in the spinning rooms, inspirational graphics on the wall, the cheerful albeit insanely crowded waiting area–drew me in. The teacher, who didn’t even know me, called out my name in class, and I instantly felt like a regular. Yes, there was great music, but there was other motivation too. There was a roomful of people having fun, and I was hooked.

It wasn’t until about a year ago that everything really started to change. Stacey Griffth, one of the founding SoulCycle instructors, began teaching a regular 7:30 am class, a perfect time for my schedule. Beaten up by my second NYC Marathon, and again desperate to keep that runners high and body, I started going about three times a week. I knew of Stacey’s cult-like following, and her classes were legendary. Getting in was tough. Class sign-up for the week opened Monday at noon, and her classes were usually sold out by 12:01. The Calendar: January’s 31 Days Of Workouts

The holidays are behind us and time to say farewell to December’s excesses. January is traditionally the shape up month and with that we thought we would offer 31 days of workout options. As we did with 31 Days of Sneakers in December, each day will feature a new class, sport, gym, dvd or other fun way to get back in shape or just liven up your routine.

JAN.31: CRUNCH. Wow, I cant believe it’s my last day of 31 Days of Workouts! I have had so much fun trying everything out, and for my last day wanted to feature a place that has it all, including some workouts I missed. Crunch started in 1989 as a basement aerobics studio in NYC’s East Village and now has gyms across the country. From the untraditional decor to the unbelievable class offerings, that mix traditional workouts with their own creations, like Bodyweb Bosu, Boing With Kangoo, Cycle Karaoke, Retro Robics, Cardio Striptease, Jillian Michael’s Bodyshred, and many many more… their philosophy has always been to make exercise FUN! So if you would like to try some of the workouts I featured this month and some of those I missed, Crunch is your place for one stop fitness.

JAN.30: STAND-UP PADDLE YOGA. From the snow to the water we go. Stand-Up Paddleboarding is a fun and great way to get some exercise, but unfortunately for many us enthusiasts it’s a summer or vacation activity only. I stumbled upon a this crazy workout called Aqua Stand-Up, an indoor stand-up paddleboard pool workout, which I couldn’t resist featuring. Besides paddling, there are lots of exercises you can do on a board, Yoga being one of them. Because the poses are performed on a moving surface, different muscles are engaged. So when the weather permits and you’re back on the board, why not give it a try. I myself am headed to Mexico in March for the 4th Annual Punta Sayulita Classic. Sayulita was voted as one of the top 10 SUP destinations in the world by Men’s Fitness magazine. Hope to see you all there!

JAN.29: WINTER SPORTS. Mother Nature has given us a good blast of winter this year, with lots of snow and cold temperatures. Why not take advantage! Skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, iceskating, and sledding are just a few of the fun ways to get outside, enjoy the weather and burn some calories at the same time. Consider it part of your cross training. I’m actually writing from Snowmass, CO where the sun is shining after a night of snowfall. Can’t say much more… gotta go hit the slopes!

JAN.28: MIXED MARTIAL ARTS: Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Karate, and Jiu-Jitsu are just a few of the disciplines of Mixed Martial Arts. Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts, established in 1984, is one of the most recognized Martial Arts training facilities, with many east coast locations. I myself checked out Jeet Kune Do at Anderson’s Martial Arts Academy, an impressive 12,000 sq.ft training facility located in downtown Manhattan. Jeet Kune Do is the martial art system Bruce Lee developed and draws its inspiration from many different philosophies of street fighting. While teaching practical fighting and self-defense skills, the punching and kicking of Jeet Kune Do, Muay Thai and all the other martial arts make these intense cardio workouts, in addition improving agility, increasing flexibility and building strength. To find a training facility near you click here.

JAN.27: KINECTED PILATES CENTER. With all the intense and crazy workouts out there, it is really important to incorporate some stretching and alignment into our fitness regimens. Pilates is a great way to do that. I took the Bands and Physioball mat class at Kinected, a Pilates studio recognized for their teaching training program and integration of wellness into their practice. This deceptively hard class, features exercises that focus on the Pilates tenets of core strength and body alignment. The studio is located in a lovely loft space, with cheerful attention to detail noticeable in the coordination of things like the bright blue walls, orange mats and clear Physioballs. Kinected also offers private and semi-private classes, physical therapy, Gyrotronics, Rolfing and other custom programs.
