In decisive fashion, Team USA team beat Japan last night 5-2 to win the Womens World Cup, stunning the previous world champions in a rematch of the 2011 World Cup final. The first three goals were scored in the first 16 minutes of play, two of them by Carli Lloyd who scored a total of three goals and emerged as the star of this World Cup with an unprecedented “hat trick.” It was her third goal that was no doubt the most impressive, launched midfield from 55 yards out and just over the head of Japan’s goalie, Ayumi Kaihori. Lloyd won the Golden Ball trophy for best player.

This is the third World Cup win for the American women, the last time being in 1999. That match was one of the most memorable soccer games in history, with players like Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy and Brandi Chastain, who famously whipped off her shirt after scoring the winning goal in the final seconds on a penalty kick. But with stars like Carli Lloyd, Abby Wambach, Hope Solo, Alex Morgan, and Megan Rapinoe, this American team established their own place in history with one of the most dominating wins in World Cup history.
