Game, Set… Style!

Competing in front of sold out stadiums and on television sets worldwide, the professional athlete has to look as good as she plays. She needs a hairstyle that will keep the hair off her face while still showing off a little personal style. Ponytails and braids, headbands and visors are just a few tricks of the trade and favorites among tennis players — and no one knows more about that than Julien Farel, namesake of the Julien Farel Restore Salon & Spa.

Every year since 2007, Julien Farel and his team of stylists open a pop-up salon for the players and their VIPs at the US Open tennis tournament. They cut and style the on and off court looks of such players as Novak Djokovic, Victoria Azarenka, and Rafael Nadal. “What I love about it”, says Lucie Ducrot, one of the salon’s top stylists, “is you get to meet all the players intimately because you cut their hair. They are always so low key and down to earth, and you create a relationship because you see them every year. The first year I cut Novak Djokovic’s hair he won! I was so proud!”

With the tennis season in full swing, who better to create some sporty summer hairstyles for Style of Sport? We brought Lucie Ducrot out to the John McEnroe Tennis Academy at SPORTIME, located on Randall’s Island in Manhattan, to style the tresses of a few of their top players and coaches. The John McEnroe Tennis Academy offers advanced level tennis training, under the guidance of one of the sport’s greatest players and his staff of world-class coaches — while still providing young players the opportunity to live at home, continue their education, and participate in a variety of sports and extracurricular activities. Of primary importance is the maintenance of balanced and healthy lives…

W.O.W! Working Out With Lucy Sykes

LUCY SYKES AND YOUR EDITOR, CLAUDIA LEBENTHAL, GETTING OUR SWEAT ON AT FLYBARRE

PHOTOGRAPHS BY MAGGIE MANN

Fitness Junkie is an irresistibly fun novel set in the fitness landscape of NYC, that takes a hysterical look at our body obsessed culture. Written by fashion veteran Lucy Sykes, and award winning journalist Jo Piazza, bestselling authors of The Knockoff, the book tells the story of Janey Sweet, CEO of a couture wedding dress company, whose fat-phobic business partner gives her an ultimatum to lose weight or lose her job.

On a mission to drop 30 lbs. fast, Janey throws herself into the boutique fitness scene: sweating it out at “Soarbarre”, primal screaming at “The Workout”, and going topless at “Nipple Yoga”. Though the comparison to many popular workouts may seem obvious, Lucy Sykes swears the similarities are purely coincidental. Nevertheless, the spoof leaves readers speculating about who’s really who, and makes Fitness Junkie a page-turning romp through the crazy landscape of our weight consumed society.

We caught up with Sykes at an “Abs & Arms” class at FlyBarre, her go-to workout of choice, for a special Fitness Junkie class. Wearing Fitness Junkie tees made for the occasion, we sweated together through this fast-paced, body-sculpting barre class that incorporated weights, resistance bands, and core balls. After class, with Sykes rushing to the next stop on her promotional tour, we jumped in a taxi and found the nearest brownstone steps to chat about her inspiration for Fitness Junkie.

The “Optimists”

It was very windy last Sunday afternoon on The Great South Bay in Bellport, Long Island, and out in full force were the fleet of  “Opti” sailboats, or “Optimists” as they are formally called. Optis are the most sailed single class boat. They are used to teach kids to sail and thus are also the biggest youth racing class of sailboat. While younger sailors begin in Optimists, competitive sailors usually continue to race them up to 14 or 15 years of age. Due to their inherent stability, robust construction and relatively small sails, these little boats can handle winds of up to 30 knots and so seemingly can these impressive young sailors!

A Cavernous Journey

THE GATE OF SON DOONG CAVE

Story and Photographs by Kelly Ryerson

I’ve known fashion photographer Kelly Ryerson since the beginning of this millennium, and first worked with her at Women’s Sports & Fitness magazine, where we journeyed on many an outdoor adventure. One of our most memorable was to photograph some bathing beauties in Goldbug Hot Springs, a hidden gem of a natural hot tub, bubbling along the banks of the Salmon River in the mountains of Idaho.

Hiking has always been a source of joy and solace for Kelly. As kid growing up in Austin, Texas, trekking through the woods and trails was simply the way to get to whatever watering hole she and her friends decided to cool off in that day. When faced recently with the emotional wallop and pain of a divorce, it was to hiking that Kelly returned, finding comfort in both its physicality and serenity.

Last March, Kelly embarked on an epic 5-day journey to Sơn Đoòng Cave in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, Vietnam – only just recently discovered – photographing it in these majestic images shown here. This is the story of her cavernous adventure…

Converse x Carhartt WIP

CONVERSE X CARHARTT WIP CHUCK TAYLOR ALL STARS

We love a good mash-up, and the collaboration between these two venerable brands might be one of our all time favorites. The Converse x Carhartt WIP collection features three Chuck Taylor All Star ‘70s Ox sneakers, each style utilizing the classic workwear-inspired Carhartt WIP fabrics of Tiger Camo Ripstop, White Drill, and Hamilton Duck Canvas. Bringing the utilitarian Carhartt influence to the iconic Converse All Star silhouette, the collection highlights everyday wearability and quality craftsmanship.

Converse and Carhartt are two heritage brands rich in both sports history and American culture. The Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star, introduced in 1932, is the original basketball shoe, and Carhartt, founded in 1889 was one of the first American companies to pioneer workwear in the USA. Carhartt WIP tailors the company’s core product design to a new consumer who values the brand’s origins while looking for a more modern design and fit. Converse x Carhartt WIP collection perfectly integrates both brands’ distinct culture and aesthetic.
