CHAD IN HALF LORD OF THE FISHES VARIATION ~ CLAUDIA IN HAPPY BABY POSE

“The last thirty years was the practice of yoga; the last three years has been the application of yoga. Getting my son dressed and out the door in the morning is a daily test of patience and compassion and trying to not react in a knee-jerk way. I invite any Buddhist monk who has been studying in a monastery for however many years to take care of a three-year-old for a few days.” -CHAD

La Veloce Vita

2017 DUCATI SUPERSPORT

I don’t ride motorcycles but if I did, I’d ride a Ducati. Italian bred, they are works of art – powerful pieces of sculptural engineering that even to those who may never straddle one, are just plain sexy.

I’ve been on some pretty awesome press trips, and would have dreamed to be invited to Seville, Spain to test the new 2017 Ducati SuperSport, recently awarded the title of  “Most Beautiful Bike” at the prestigious EICMA Motorcycle Show in Milan, Italy. Lucky for distinguished writer and long time motorcycle aficionado Jake Bright, he got to go. Thrown in with some of racing’s best, his love of motorcycle riding clicked back into gear speeding around the track and through the Spanish countryside…

“LA VELOCE VITA”

by Jake Bright

The world starts to resemble an impressionist painting while tucked under the windscreen of a Ducati at 140mph. That’s where I found myself recently, clad in full leather gear on Spain’s Circuito Monteblanco race track. Only minutes prior, I had not ridden a motorcycle for several years. Days earlier I was on the frigid U.S. East Coast without even a helmet.

Courting Beauty

CLOCKWISE TOP LEFT: JULIEN FAREL HOLDING COURT AT HIS NAMESAKE SALON; JULIEN FAREL RESTORE SALON & SPA EXTERIOR; VICTORIA AZARENKA ON SERVE AT THE US OPEN IN 2017

Ever wonder why those pro tennis players look so good, nary a hair out of place, while running, swinging, and sweating it out on the court? Trimming the tresses and styling the locks of such top players as Rafael Nadal, Novac Djokovic and Victoria Azarenka, both on and off the court, is Julien Farel, who presides over the courts at the US Open Tennis Tournament and at his namesake Julien Farel Restore Salon & Spa.

Located at the Loews Regency Hotel in NYC, the flagship Julien Farel Restore Salon & Spa sits atop the home of New York’s famed “Power Breakfast”, the noted morning meeting spot for the city’s movers and shakers. The 10,000 square foot facility occupies the southern end of the hotel and is visible through the windows on the second floor, where the transition from hair salon at one end, into fitness center at the other, can be seen. Julien Farel presides over this cross-section of beauty and sport, and embodies the two himself.

JULIEN FAREL RUNNING ALONG THE EAST RIVER EARLY ON A WINTER MORNING

A lifelong athlete, Farel grew up as a competitive skier and soccer player, before getting into the sport of beauty. Rising every workday at 5am to run along the East River or ride his Peloton bike at home, this handsome Frenchman, usually attired in suit and tie, has been integrating fitness into his salons since 2008. For him the connection of beauty and sport is integral. “They work together”, says Farel. “Our clients want one-stop shopping. They want to look and feel great, inside and out.”

Catch The Waves

“THE WAVES”
The Pepperdine Women’s Beach Volleyball Team

PHOTOGRAPHS BY KEITH KING

This Saturday, March 4th, the Pepperdine Women’s Beach Volleyball team kicks off the 2017 season with their home opener against USC and UCLA. Yes, Beach Volleyball is a NCAA sport, and with 3 out of the top 5 ranked teams on the West Coast, these college athletes make you wish they all could be California girls. Tall, fit, and tan, with killer spikes and power blocks, these women are exactly as you picture them and then some.

Collegiate Beach Volleyball is a relatively new NCAA sport, which is why you may be surprised to hear about it. I know I was when I stumbled upon the Pepperdine Waves on Zuma Beach last fall, and couldn’t help but notice these physical specimens practicing on the court next to ours. Similar to college tennis, five teams of doubles compete for each school. The team winning 3 out of 5 matches wins the tournament. The Pepperdine Waves are ranked #4 going into the 2017 season, with USC ranked #1 and UCLA #3.

A DAY AT THE BEACH
Coach Nina Matthies and the Pepperdine Women’s Beach Volleyball Team:
“We’re training eyes, mind, and bodies.”

Pepperdine University is a small Christian college nestled in the hills of Malibu, California. Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, it is one of the most beautiful college campuses you’ve ever seen. The Waves home court is on world famous Zuma Beach — think “Baywatch” — to keep you California dreaming. The NCAA announced beach volleyball as an emerging sport in January 2010, and Pepperdine officially added the program for the 2012 season.

“On 4/3/15 I woke up like the picture on the left. I’d had a stroke in my sleep which caused a palsy in the 3rd nerve of my brain, causing my right eye to swing out. I saw two of everything and could only see straight if I closed one eye. It’s taken over a year and a half, 3 surgeries, an ocean of tears, and the desperate need to regain my life to get ME back. I took the pic on the right just after taking my new SoulCycle instructor photos — hence the incredible and very fake lashes. I never imagined having the courage to share the ‘before’ pic, but think it’s important to recognize and celebrate the journey, no matter how painful. Unlike so many stories, this one has a happy ending, one that will hopefully inspire determination and hope!”

-Emma Zaks, Facebook post, November 18, 2016

This is the story of Emma Zaks, a bubbly, energetic, and very popular SoulCycle instructor. Those who ride with Emma watched this healthy and fit 33-year old woman go through an unimaginable two-year journey — becoming increasingly ill with debilitating symptoms, both gastro-intestinal and neurological, that ultimately resulted in a stroke.

On and off the SoulCycle schedule at first, Emma began subbing out her classes for other instructors. Then followed a long absence. She would later return to teach — a patch on one eye and face swollen from the steroids doctors had prescribed for devastating symptoms no one really could explain. An autoimmune disease of some sort was the rumor. As is her nature, Emma remained her upbeat self through it all, or so it appeared, never letting her riders see the pain and fear going on inside.

Luckily, this story has a happy ending. After her illness was finally diagnosed and treated, Emma started posting little bits of her journey on Facebook. So moved and overwhelmed by her strength and bravery, we asked her to tell us what happened from beginning to end. This is her story in her own words…. and her Facebook posts.

WOW! Working Out With Stephanie Ruhle

DUKING IT OUT AT SHADOWBOX WITH MSNBC ANCHOR, STEPHANIE RUHLE

PHOTOGRAPHS BY MAGGIE MANN

Stephanie Ruhle is the eponymous host of “MSNBC Live with Stephanie Ruhle,” which airs every weekday morning at 9 am. If you watch MSNBC regularly you will also see this busy newswoman pop up on your TV screens at other points during the day — especially now, when political developments are non-stop and there is never a dull moment in our nation’s news.

Previously a banker at Deutsche Bank and Credit Suisse, Stephanie got her start in business television as an anchor and managing editor for Bloomberg Television. There she co-hosted “Bloomberg GO,” Bloomberg’s flagship morning show. Among many other industry leaders, she regularly interviewed such financial titans as former Goldman Sachs President, Gary Cohn, now White House Director of the National Economic Council; Wall Street mogul, Wilbur Ross, now Commerce Secretary; famed “corporate raider” and Wall Street activist, Carl Icahn, now special adviser to the president on regulatory overhaul; and billionaire real estate tycoon, Donald Trump, now the 45th President of the United States.

Like many of those she has covered, Stephanie has shifted from business into political news in what has to be one of the most exciting times to be a reporter. It requires a lot physical and mental stamina. “It comes with a great responsibility,” she says, and you have to be “fitter than ever.” Given the time demands of her job; role as a wife and mother of three kids; and active involvement in women’s leadership development, having founded the Corporate Investment Bank Women’s Network and serving on the board of trustees for Girls Inc., how does Stephanie stay in such obviously good shape?

2 Runners, 5 Shoes

TWO RUNNERS: SARAH & CLAUDIA

Looking for a little motivation to get you out on the road? How about a new pair of running shoes! We asked Nike, Asics, Newton, Hoka, and Brooks to send us their top picks for a lightweight neutral trainer. Since different runners like different shoes, I invited Sarah Toland, co-author of Lindsay Vonn’s recently published book, Strong Is The New Beautiful, and a 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier in the 5K and 10K, to road test these running shoes with me. She’s a tall and lanky gazelle of a runner, while I’m shorter and more compact in my running style  — what Sarah describes as “a recreational marathoner with zeal”. My goal is simply to get from point A to point B. Hers is to do it fast! Here are two different runners thoughts on five of the newest top trainers:

NIKE LUNARGLIDE 8 $120

Nike says: The LunarGlide 8 offers breathable support and exceptionally soft cushioning to help you glide through your longest runs. Engineered mesh provides comfortable breathability while Flywire technology adapts to your foot for a secure fit. The soft, contoured Lunarlon midsole has precision-lasered cuts on the sides that collapse during footstrike to help you reach a smoother stride. A dynamic support platform adds comfortable, lightweight stability without weighing you down.

Sarah says: I loved how the Lunarglide fit my narrow foot and offered a great combination of a firm feel and well-cushioned ride. I wish it was a bit more springy and responsive, otherwise it might be my favorite out of all those we tested.  Read More

Savory Goodness! 9 Healthy Snacks

We’ve expounded on our love of snacks in many a post. Being as active as we are, and working the long hours that we do, we are always looking for healthy treats to keep us going in between meals. We last shared our favorite sweets in Super Sweets, and now we’re on to the savory. Here’s 9 of our go-to favorites!

ROW 1: HARD BOILED EGG. At about 80 calories with 7 grams of protein, a hard boiled egg is a filling snack that doesn’t fill you up. There is ongoing discussion about the cholesterol count, but recent research has concluded that infrequent egg consumption does not increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Conveniently packaged in its own natural carrying case, boil them up and take them to go!

SEASNAX. Seasnax roasted seaweed sheets are marketed as “strangely addictive” and that they are. This is great news as seaweed is nutrient packed! It’s one of the richest sources of minerals, high in Iodine, Vitamin B12 and potassium. Seasnax come in convenient single serve packs that are a ridiculously low 15 calories a piece. Read More

The 31 Days of Fitness 2017!

ROW 1: CITY ROW; RUNNING; DANCEBODY; ROW 2: DOGPOUND; PURE YOGA; SWTICH PLAYGROUND; ROW 3: EXHALE CFX; RUMBLE; DEUCE GYM

Happy New Year everyone and welcome to The 31 Days of Fitness! Every January your editor embarks on a crazy adventure, and does a different workout or takes a different fitness class everyday all month long. My objective? To show our readers how many different exercise options are out there and that there are no excuses not to get in shape this 2017! The holidays have been fun but it’s time to get our butts back in gear as this new year begins. There is a workout for everyone out there — running, spinning, boxing, rowing, Crossfit, High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), pole dancing, yoga, pilates, and more — and I’m going to sample them all this month! I’m determined to find the workout for you — not just one you’ll do, but one you will actually enjoy!

January 31: BODY BY BOB. That’s it folks… the 31 Days of Fitness are officially a wrap! Back in NYC, we went out with a bang on Day 31, with a grand finale featuring none other than super trainer Bob Harper! Yes, “Biggest Loser” fans, THE Bob Harper, and let me tell you something… believe the hype! This guy gets star billing for a reason. He is a super motivator. Sampling some of the flavors of workouts I’ve done so far, with a few I hadn’t tasted yet, Bob whipped up an all-out, full-blast circuit of high intensity moves that kicked my butt after one round. Then he kept me going for 3 more rounds, coaching and inspiring me to drop my time too! Borrowing from Gymnastics, CrossFit, and HIIT workouts, the stations went from the Woodway Curve (cool to run on that self propelled treadmill again after Speedplay on Day 29); to Parallette Shoot Thrus (parallel bars on floor with leg swings to front and back); to the Schwinn Airdyne bike (told you it was back); to Thrusters (barbell squats with overhead press); to Sprawlers (burpees without the push-up); to Kettlebell swings.
