The New Year’s Cleanse

Happy New Year! As we head into the first week of the year, many of us may be feeling the results of all that holiday fun. Perhaps a few pounds from 2016 have decided they might like to hang around for 2017. Well not so fast! As quickly as they joined your waistline, you can bid them farewell. From juices to shakes to teas to food based cleanses, there are a number of popular and effective ways to quickly shed that extra weight. Even a short 3 day cleanse is a great way to jump start your New Year’s goals, and get you mentally and physically back on track.

A cleanse gives the internal organs a break from having to digest processed and fatty foods, sugar, and alcohol, which is energy depleting too. Limiting your food choices takes unhealthy options out of the equation and forces you to regain your healthy focus. As that food fog lifts, mental clarity, more energy, better sleep, and clearer skin are other benefits that will leave you feeling rejuvenated. Plus that quick weight loss, while initially it may be mostly water, will leave you feeling lighter and less bloated — and everybody loves the confidence boost of their jeans being loose again!

Here is round up of the tried and true, and most popular new cleanses. 3 days, 1 week, 14 days or a month long, even if you’re not letter perfect, you’ll be feeling better and ready to the new year!

FOOD BASED CLEANSES

These food based cleanses feature a combination of healthy eating, along with protein shakes and nutritional supplements that support the body during detox and weight loss. They are most non-restrictive and are ideal for those looking for a regimented cleanse with something they can chew on.

Burn & Build Body

Burn & Build Body offers a variety of different cleanses. From their 7-Day Fit Kit ($129) to their 14 Day Detox ($229) to their 28 Day Protein Lean Power Food Diet ($295), they feature a combination of healthy food choices and protein shakes, along with nutritional and energy supplements. Each program has a different focus, from weight loss to anti-aging detox to fat burning, but all three are designed to detox the system, reshape eating habits, and increase energy. Dairy, sugar, and gluten are eliminated, along with processed and prepared foods, and replaced with lean proteins, whole grains (restricted amounts), fruits and vegetables. Protein shakes are consumed as snacks or meal replacements, depending on the cleanse. Burn & Build Body cleanses have been featured in The Oprah Magazine, Mens Fitness, T The New York Time Style Magazine, and Harpers Bazaar, among numerous other fashion and health publications, and are favorite of  your editor for a quick tune up. Old Workout Clothes Wanted!

JILL MOSKOWITZ SIFTING THROUGH PILES OF OLD WORKOUT WEAR

Of all the things you can sell on eBay, used workout clothes are not something for which you would imagine there would be market.  As it turns out however, there is for both buyer and seller, and 26-year old Jill Moskowitz, aka “fitbuyer212“, has figured out a way to make a six figure income doing just that. She’ll give you cash on the spot for your old leggings and sportbras too!

2 years ago, tired of her dog walking job in New York City, Jill started looking for alternative ways to make money. A California native who had gone to college in the city, she had always sold stuff on eBay. She stared listing her old Lululemon pieces and found there was a market. Clearly resourceful, she figured other people were probably just donating or throwing away their old workout wear, and she could make it business out of it.

Jill began by putting flyers up offering money for used workout wear, and printed business cards which she handed out outside of fitness studios. It was a struggle at first to find sellers but once word of mouth spread that there was this girl who would give you cash on the spot for your old stuff, her business started to boom. Earning over $100,000 in her first year and on track to double it this year, she has clearly found a market. Read More

Milly On The Marathon

”From afar, I had this crew pegged as Italian. Italian men are confident enough to wear pink, and they do quite well.  I was pleasantly surprised to discover these dudes are French. Move over Italians, French men wear pink and look TRES BEAU doing so! The French are fiercely committed to neck scarves, even on the running track. And they’re CHIC AF, non?”

…says MICHELLE SMITH, DESIGNER & FOUNDER, MILLY

Happy NYC Marathon Sunday! Today more than 50,000 runners will take over the streets of Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and the Bronx to cover the 5 boroughs and 26.2 miles that make up the New York City Marathon. What makes this one of the greatest sporting events in the world are not the pros — we know they can do it — but the thousands of regular folks like you and I, who decide this is the year they are going to run this unfathomable distance, and put in every ounce of their heart and soul into crossing that finish line.

One of the best pre-Marathon sights are the visiting runners on the roads and trails of Central Park. You can spot them from a mile away. Something about their bright colors and uniform style gives them away… or perhaps it’s the name of their homeland proudly displayed on their running jerseys.

So on a gorgeous fall morning, Style of Sport’s good buddy Michelle Smith, Designer and Founder of Milly, and I went for a stroll around the Central Park Reservoir to check out the running attire for this year’s race. Michelle is known for her popping colors, playful silhouettes, graphic tees – and an inimitable way of expressing her opinion. You’ll have to Google “AF” if you’re not familiar with that term.

Here is her fashion take on the runners of the NYC Marathon, as only she can give you!

Slim Aarons: The Sporting Life

Now on chic coffee tables everywhere is Slim Aarons:Women, the newest monograph of Slim Aarons photographs. As chronicler of the lives of the rich and aristocratic in the 1950’s, 60’s, and 70’s, Slim Aarons was unrivaled. His photographs are the embodiment of “the good life”, which of course includes the sporting life. Skiing in Austria, waterskiing in Antibes, surfing in Newport, canoeing in Lake Tahoe, and snorkeling in Bermuda are a few of the “leisure” activities, as Aarons refered to them, featured in the book.

Princess Lucy Ruspoli stands in front of a colourful wall of old skis in Lech am Arlberg, Austria, February 1979.

Aarons served as a photographer in World War II, and when it was over turned his camera in the opposite direction. According to the author of Slim Aarons:Women, Laura Hawk, who was Aaron’s assistant for over a decade, it was “people seeking pleasure” that inspired him, and he absolutely loved shooting sports. What became his niche of photographing the super wealthy was by accident, but it was there that he found the splendor in these activities and he was always looking for a new sporting angle. Hawk described one of their many trips to St. Moritz, when Aarons had heard about a new sport called “ski joering” at the famed Palace Hotel, where skiers were being across the ice pulled by a horse. He couldn’t wait to photograph it. Recalls Hawk, “Slim ran out into the middle of the track to get it head on. He was like a child about it. He loved the adrenaline rush!”

The Old Ball Game

All-Star Baseball series (R401-1), issued by Leaf Gum Company, 1948

With the teams now set for the 2016 World Series, the Chicago Cubs will face off against the Cleveland Indians in Game 1 this Tuesday, October 25th for the grand finale of the MLB baseball season. In another baseball finale, The Old Ball Game: New York Baseball, 1887–1977, a wonderful exhibit of historical baseball cards at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is on view for the last few weeks of its run.

Baseball cards were originally produced by tobacco companies, and starting in the 1880’s included in cigarette packs as a marketing gimmick. It wasn’t until the 1930s that they were included in packs of gum to appeal to the youth market. The exhibit showcases these artistic little gems, some of the earliest baseball cards ever produced, celebrating many of the game’s greatest players in the the prime of their careers. Read More

Whether or not you have actually bought the DVDs, chances are you’ve heard of Shaun T and “Insanity”, or Tony Horton and “P90X”. The high energy infomercials on which they’ve been sold are undeniably captivating and dominated the airwaves at those hours we all seem to be looking for something to watch. The infomercials and workouts, as well as the before and after body transformations, have made superstars, or “Super Trainers”, out of these fitness personalities, and earned the company that produces these workouts over $1 billion in sales.

Beachbody is the company behind these DVDs and many more, and producer of the most popular at home fitness and weight loss programming that also includes FOCUS T2521 Day FixBrazil Butt Lift, Fixate, and Hip Hop ABS, among others. P90X alone has sold approximately 7 million DVD copies since its inception. Beachbody On Demand launched in March of 2015, giving consumers unlimited streaming access to the entire library of workouts via their computers. Now available online is a wide variety of programs designed for those who want to lose weight, build muscle, learn to dance, start yoga, or simply eat healthier.

Included in the Beachbody On Demand programming there is also a reality show called The 20’s: The Search for the Next Beachbody Super Trainer. Hosted by one of the original reality TV stars, Dan Cortese, who many will remember from MTV Sports, the show pits a group of 10 hot bodied trainers against each other in competition to see who has what it takes to be the next fitness superstar. Robin Williams: Good Will Cycling

ROBIN WILLIAMS WITH HIS ZIPP “2001” TIME TRIAL ROAD BIKE, ONE OF THE FASTEST EVER MANUFACTURED, NOW ON AUCTION

Now on auction through October 25th at Paddle8, is a phenomenal collection of bicycles owned by none other than the late great actor and comedian Robin Williams. Williams was known as an avid cyclist, as well as a fierce advocate for people with disabilities. 87 of his favorite bicycles have been donated by the Williams family to honor these passions. Titled “The Collector: Robin Williams”, the auction is expected to generate over $200,000, with all proceeds to benefit two of the nonprofits to which he was dedicated: the Challenged Athletes Foundation, which supports athletes with disabilities through physical fitness and competitive athletics; and the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, which is dedicated to curing spinal cord injury.

Williams’ expansive and eccentric collection is considered legendary by cycling enthusiasts, containing many groundbreaking designs, and ranging from road to mountain, time trial to single speed, as well as one-of-a-kind choppers, unicycles, and scooters. Williams was known for his flamboyant style and these bicycles are no exception. Many of them were custom made, and tricked out with loudest graphics and the hottest components.

“Though bright, skin-tight spandex still remains one of the more embarrassing outfits to regularly witness your Dad wearing growing up”, the Williams family was quoted saying, “the sport of biking and the people Dad helped through his love of it will always hold a special place in the hearts of our family. Causes like the Reeve Foundation, championed by his longtime friends Chris and Dana Reeve, and the Challenged Athletes Foundation, in whose triathlons he often biked, were both deeply important to him and we’re honored to be able to continue to support them both in Dad’s name. And though not required, may we suggest wearing the loudest, most vibrant and brightly-patterned, skintight biking gear possible when riding them?”

New Balance x J.Crew

NEW BALANCE X J.CREW

Finally jumping into the activewear market — and with a sports performance partner to add some credibility — is J.Crew in collaboration with New Balance. Designed for running, spinning, yoga, boxing and more, and styled with that quintessential J.Crew chic preppy style, the New Balance x J. Crew women’s active collection seeks to be activewear you can actually be active in, besides running errands and wearing to lunch with friends.

Many have wondered what took J.Crew so long to get in the game.  J.Crew CEO, Millard “Mickey” Drexler, had been quoted saying they planned to sit out the athletic trend, realizing they did not have the expertise to create sports apparel. Partnering with one of the pre-eminent sport brands, New Balance, whose sneakers J.Crew has been selling since 2005, has solved that problem. As Drexler explained in WWD, “We did not have the expertise to do this alone. We have style sense and quality sense. But we didn’t have the technical sense in getting it done. It’s really important for us to do it — and to do it right.”

To show this is performance activewear, the collection is being modeled on real athletes and fitness personalities that include Gracie Cavalho, Muay Thai Boxer; Taryn Toomey, founder of “The Class”; Taye Johnson, a SoulCycle instructor; and Rachael Wang, an editor and runner. The New Balance x J. Crew collection goes on sale Tuesday, October 11 with 20 styles that include women’s sneakers, leggings, shorts, sports bras, tanks, short and long sleeved tops, jackets and pullovers, with plans to expand into men’s this spring. The collection will be sold both online and in 35 J.Crew stores in the U.S., as well as London and Toronto.

The “Big Papi” of Totes

L.L.BEAN DAVID ORTIZ COMMEMORATIVE BOAT & TOTE BAG

In celebration of the retirement of “Big Papi” and his contributions to the Red Sox, L.L.Bean has created the limited edition David Ortiz Commemorative Boat and Tote Bag, made from upcycled rain delay tarps used on the field at Fenway Park. The bag features Ortiz’s nickname “Big Papi” in gold lettering, and an interior pocket that reads “LEG3ND4RY,” a nod to his number 34 jersey — along with a graphic of Ortiz’s signature post-home run stance, pointing to the sky in tribute to his mother who died in a car crash in 2002.

Because the tote is made from repurposed materials, each one is unique, and a collector’s item for baseball and L.L.Bean fans alike. It’s a chance for Red Sox fans to own a piece of history representing two of their beloved icons, Fenway Park and David Ortiz, and this swan song season has been one of Big Papi’s biggest. Ortiz has hit 36 homers so far this year, the most for any player in their final season.

BigPapi.4

Available at select L.L.Bean stores and online beginning Friday, September 30th, the tote retails for $99.95. Due to anticipated demand, sales will be limited to one per customer. 34 of the net proceeds from the sale of these bags will be donated to the David Ortiz Children’s Fund, a non-profit organization committed to helping children in New England and the Dominican Republic who do not have access to the critical pediatric services they need. A big heart goes with that big bat… and that big bag.

Wollman Ice Skating rink was transformed into a horse ring for the third year in a row last week, in what has become a new annual fall highlight in New York City, the Rolex Central Park Horse Show. Nestled at the bottom of Central Park, with the luxury hotels of Central Park South as a backdrop, this metropolitan yet bucolic setting makes for a spectacular venue, and one that is distinctly New York.

New York City is not a place for those who expect success to come easily, and the course itself is extremely challenging for both riders and horses alike, squeezing the multiple combinations of the massive jumps that define a Grand Prix competition — up to 1.5 meters or roughly 5 feet in height and distance — into what is a small and oddly shaped arena. New York’s theme song aptly applies, “If I can make it here, I’ll make it anywhere”, and the lyrics could be changed to “If I can jump it here, I’ll jump it anywhere.”

The five day show has quickly established itself on the international circuit as one of the world’s leading equestrian competitions, combining Grand Prix show jumping and dressage. One of the most anticipated events of the show was the $216,000 Rolex U.S. Open Grand Prix. Held Friday evening, it featured two Olympians from Team USA who competed in Rio this summer, McLain Ward and Kent Farrington, both of whom won silver medals in Equestrian Team Jumping. We had the opportunity to meet Kent, a Rolex Testimonee, and currently ranked #2 in the world, just before the competition, to chat about what has become an iconic and uniquely NYC sporting event — as well as his first Olympic games in Rio.

American Jumper

BRIANNE GOUTAL

Sunday marks the final day of competition at The Hampton Classic horse show with the marquee event, the $300,000 Hampton Classic Grand Prix, closing the show. It is the grand finale of the Hamptons summer party season and regularly attracts the biggest celebrities and boldface names from the worlds of entertainment, fashion, media and finance. While many come for the social scenery, at the heart of this event is the Grand Prix competition featuring the sport’s best show jumpers.

Neil Latham is a British fine art photographer whose body of work, “American Thoroughbred”, was recently exhibited at Steven Kasher gallery in New York. This phenomenal collection of large-scale black and white portraits showcases America’s greatest race horses, along with an accompanying monograph American Thoroughbred. We profiled the artist and his work in June: Neil Latham: American Thoroughbred. What makes these images so unique is their graphic simplicity and the way they are created. He constructs a studio on site,  photographing the animals in front of a massive black backdrop, 20 feet tall by 36 feet wide.

Keeping the focus equestrian again for his next project, Latham has turned his lens and backdrop to show jumping and the Grand Prix. He has begun photographing a new series called “American Jumper”, that features the premier equestrians and their horses, with plans for an exhibition and art book in 2018. STYLE of SPORT has been collaborating with him on this project, and very excited to debut this sneak peak at a few of the top riders and horses he has photographed so far: Georgina Bloomberg on Crown, Brianne Goutal on Onira, and Sydney Shulman on Cosmeo.

W.O.W! Working Out With Kelly Killoren Bensimon

KELLY KILLOREN BENSIMON AT THE HAMPTON CLASSIC

The Hampton Classic horse show takes over the Hamptons social scene this week as the grand finale of the summer season. While many go to see and be seen, at the heart of the event are the equestrians of all ages and levels, and some celebrities too, that are there to compete. For this installment of “WOW: Working Out With” we caught a ride with one of the more recognizable faces, Kelly Killoren Bensimon, who is showing this week.

For many people the name Kelly Killoren Bensimon is synonymous with the “Real Housewives of New York”, the reality show on which she was a featured cast member for three seasons. Pitted in an infamous battle with another cast member, her story line made for the kind salacious programming that people regularly tune in to reality television. We actually don’t, but google it if you’re interested.

Kelly has been a model since she was 16 years old, having been discovered in Elite Model’s “Look of The Year” contest. Attending Columbia while modeling, it was a college professor that encouraged her to start writing for the magazines in which her pictures were appearing. Starting at Hamptons magazine, she would go on to Gotham and later become Editor-In-Chief of Elle Accessories.

Now 48 years old and the mother of two teenage girls, Kelly is still drop dead gorgeous. Take one look at her and it’s obvious she’s been an athlete her whole life. Hard as we may try, this kind of physique is not made in a gym. A competitive swimmer growing up, she runs, rides (obviously), and recently added SoulCycle to her fitness regimen, primarily to improve her equestrian skills. “It really keeps you grounded on the horse and strong,” she says.

While urban bike sharing programs are great for commuting and tooling around town, they are also the ideal sightseeing vehicle for both tourists and locals alike. Allowing you to go slow enough to take in the monuments, landmarks, and vistas of a city, and fast enough to cover some ground, you can get your exercise in along the way too. Plus with docking stations located all over the city, you never have to worry about locking your bike.

A few weeks ago, on a balmy summer’s eve, your STYLE of SPORT editor was invited by Rapha on a cycling art tour of Manhattan. Rapha is the posh English cycling apparel and accessory brand we happen to love and feature regularly for its blend of sophisticated style and performance. With a recently opened shop in Manhattans’s Soho called the Rapha Cycle Club, the store serves as a hub for the city’s cyclists and starting point for group road bike rides. On this evening, however, it would be an 8-mile city bike — or Citibike — ride through Soho, Chelsea, and a bit of midtown too.

The Rapha Transmission Tour, as they call it, was lead by Derrick Lewis, Rapha Communications Manager for North America. Its mission was to show us New York from a new perspective. As a lifelong New Yorker myself, I always welcome this opportunity. This would be a tour of New York City public art — those architectural structures, installations, sculptures, and paintings we see everyday, perhaps never really notice, and often know nothing about.

RIO 2016 OLYMPICS: USAIN BOLT WINNING MEN’S 100M SEMI-FINAL

It was .58 seconds from the time Usain Bolt crossed the finish line and won his third consecutive gold medal in the Mens 100m to the image of that historical moment being available to news agencies and publications around the world. According to Ken Mainardis, Vice President of Sports Imagery and Services at Getty Images, 20 years ago during the Summer Olympics is Atlanta, the time from camera to customer was 40 minutes — but that was before the era of digital photography, when film and processing was still part of the equation.

Since 1988 Getty Images has been the IOC Official Partner. In these 2016 Olympics in Rio, 1.5 million images will be photographed by a team of 40 all-star photographers. Seconds after they are taken, photos will go directly from their cameras to a team of 20 photo editors. 85,000 images will be distributed worldwide within minutes thanks to approximately 62 miles of a state-of-the-art fiber optic network spanning the different venues of the Rio Games.

As you can imagine, for a sports photographer to be at the Olympics is the dream assignment and according to Mainardis, making the Getty team is as competitive as making the Olympic team. Specialists in the different sports contested like swimming, track & field, sailing, basketball, gymnastics, tennis, cycling, and more are selected. This is the ultimate test for these photographers to capture Olympic history and immortalize an athlete’s moment of glory.

4 Days in Rio: How To Crush the Olympic Games!

CLOCKWISE TOP LEFT: USAIN BOLT LEADING MEN’S 100M FINAL; BEACH VOLLEYBALL ARENA IN COPACABANA; YOUR EDITOR; ORIGINAL OMEGA STOPWATCH FROM 1932 SUMMER OLYMPICS; WOMEN’S 4X 100 WOMEN’S MEDLEY RELAY START

Four years ago during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, I started blogging about the sport and style of the Games. Fast 4-ward to 2016, and STYLE of SPORT is here in Rio at the Summer Olympics as a guest of Omega watches, the Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games — a distinction they have held for 27 Olympics since the 1932 Summer Games in Los Angeles. So this is how you crush the Olympics with some VIP access and a bit of luck on your side.

DAY 1: Take an overnight flight from NYC to Rio and hit the ground running! After a quick shower at the hotel (freshen up… it’s going to be a long day), head over to the Olympic Park for the Men’s Tennis semi-final match between Juan Del Potro vs. Rafael Nadal. You may think you’re going to see your typical major tennis event, but this is a battle between two countries, Argentina vs. Spain, and the crowd is as loud as a World Cup soccer match.

CLOCKWISE TOP LEFT: JUAN DEL POTRO WINNING MEN’S SEMI-FINAL AGAINST RAFAEL NADAL AS ARGENTINA CHEERS ON; OUTSIDE CARIOCA ARENA 1 IN OLYMPIC PARK; INSIDE MEN’S BASKETBALL USA VS. FRANCE

Follow that with a little swimming just across the park. How about the Men’s and Women’s 4 x 100 medley relay and USA wins gold in both! You get to see Michael Phelps anchoring the men’s race, but first do a double take when you spot Boomer, the most famous Olympic baby ever, and family in the Omega Hospitality Lounge having a bite with the rest of us before Dad swims. You’re off to a good start!

SOS Portfolio: Jeremy Koreski

koreski-14

koreski-16

Jeremy Koreski photographs surfing, among other outdoor sports, but he doesn’t take pictures in warm sunny locales. It’s cold, wet, and sometimes snowing where he is, but the subjects in his photographs never seem to mind. They’re too busy having fun. Bundled up and in wetsuits — with hoods, booties and gloves – they’re all smiles taking advantage of the natural playground their surroundings have to offer.

Koreski grew up in Tofino, British Columbia, a town on the west coast of Vancouver Island, about a 1½ hour ferry ride from Vancouver. There wasn’t a whole to do there other than watch TV or play outside. Koreski and his friends opted for the latter. Surrounded by water, surfing and fishing were the activities of choice. At 13 he picked up a camera and started shooting, documenting their outdoor adventures. Koreski still calls Vancouver Island home and his work showcases the lifestyle and culture of the Canadian coast and Pacific Northwest. The landscape is the star of his images, given perspective by the subjects in it.

With a 3D goggle seal, these goggles hug the eye socket, without leaving marks, to ensure maximum leak resistance — most importantly during starts and turns. Patented goggle strap features a tensioning scale that allows for a consistently accurate and secure fit with significantly less strap tension, so goggles feel more comfortable too.

ARENA COBRA ULTRA GOGGLES $59.95. As seen on 100m breaststroke gold medalist and world record holder, Adam Peaty, these ultra race goggles combine no-drag hydrodynamic design with extra wide peripheral vision for unbeatable performance in the pool.

TYR STEALTH MIRRORED RACING GOGGLES $17.99. Constructed with a low profile design, these sleek goggles offer a streamlined fit for minimal drag. Latex free, this performance goggle also has durable, hypoallergenic silicone gaskets that provide a comfortable, watertight seal and maintain their shape over time.

Rio 2016: The Ones To Follow

Image Map

As the Summer Olympics kick off, we’ve got the athletes to watch and the ones to follow. Here are 15 of our Olympic favorites whose road to Rio and Olympic journey can be seen through their own eyes and Instagrams. Click on the images above and follow these athletes as they go for the gold!

ROW 1: ALLYSON FELIX. Competing in the Women’s 400m, 4×100 and 4x400m relay, this will be Allyson Felix’s fourth Olympic Games, and she is still a medal contender. Unfortunately we won’t see her in the 200m, the event in which she won Olympic gold in 2012, having come up .01 seconds short in the Olympic trials. USAIN BOLT. The fastest human ever, holding both the 100m and 200m world records, Usain Bolt is back to defend his back to back gold medals (2008 and 2012) in both these events. MICHAEL PHELPS & RYAN LOCHTE. Michael Phelps, the most decorated athlete in Olympic history with 22 medals, 18 of them gold, is back for more in Rio, his fifth Olympic games. Having come out of retirement with a refreshed attitude, a stint in rehab behind him, he is a new father as well the flag bearer for Team USA. Back in Rio as well is friend and rival Ryan Lochte, who failed to qualify for the 400IM, the event in which he won the gold medal in London 2012, but who will be swimming in the 200IM.

ROW 2: VENUS WILLIAMS & SERENA WILLIAMS. The Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, are the two-time defending Olympic women’s doubles gold medalists and have a combined eight golds between them, four apiece. They are competing in both singles and doubles here in Rio, with Serena seeded no.1 and Venus no.5. MISSY FRANKLIN & KATIE LEDECKY. Missy Franklin will be swimming the 200m backstroke, 200m freestyle and 4x200m freestyle relay, but missed the cut in the 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke, the event in which she won gold in 2012. Teammate Katie Ledecky is heavily favored to be one of the most decorated swimmers of the 2016 Olympics, having swept the 2015 World Championships in the 200, 400, 800 and 1500-meter freestyle events and blowing away the competition in the US Olympic Swimming Trials.  SIMONE BILES & TEAM USA GYMNASTICS. The most powerful gymnast the sport has ever seen, Simone Biles has redefined what is possible in gymnastics and is heavily favored to win the all-around gold medal, in addition to multiple individual events. Biles and her teammates are defending their 2012 team gold medal and favored to win again, with 2012 all-around gold medalist Gabby Douglas returning, along with Aly Raisman, another individual gold medalist from the London games.

ROW 3: MEGAN RAPINOE & THE US WOMENS SOCCER TEAM. Still hot from their 2015 World Cup win, Megan Rapinoe and her teammates are poised to take home the gold in Brazil! IBTIHAJ MUHAMMAD. Ibtihaj Muhammad is America’s first hijab-wearing Olympian, a fencer competing in the Sabre events, a relatively new discipline of the sport in the Olympics for women. Muhammad, who at 30 is a first time Olympian, is a legitimate medal contender, ranked no.2 in the US and no.8 in the world. KERRY WALSH JENNINGS & APRIL ROSS. 3-time gold medalist Kerry Walsh Jennings is going for her 4th here in Rio in Beach Volleyball, but with a new partner and former rival, April Ross. Longtime teammate Misty May Trainer retired after the London games. Both have something to prove and are looking for the win here in Rio, where Beach Volleyball reigns supreme.

Follow all these athletes and lots more US Olympians on TEAM USA!

We asked Lucy Danziger, Founder and CEO of Hintd (the website that lets you create your ultimate wish list that anyone can shop), an Ironman triathlete herself, for some of her favorite training and competition essentials. From Ironman to Olympic to sprint distance races, whether you’re an old pro or newbie to the sport, here are a few hot picks to get a little edge on the competition this summer!

TOP ROW: SPECIALIZED ALIAS SPORT $2500. Combining performance with versatility, the Specialized Alias Sport is perfect for riders looking to get into triathlons who still want the design of a traditional road bike. The Alias Sport is made for triathletes who want one bike for every ride. GARMIN 920XT GPS WATCH $450. Offering a plethora of tri-sport tracking and data, along with everyday fitness monitoring, the Garmin 920XT is your ultimate swim, bike, and run companion. Though pricey, the new Maverick X from Roka is revolutionary in its design. By inverting the existing paradigm and starting with the arms up, this wetsuit is designed for total mobility throughout the stroke. Says Lucy Danziger, “It’s so thin and yet buoyant — like a skin more than a wetsuit. The sleeves don’t constrict at all so you feel fast and high in the water without the usual tight wetsuit feeling.” Says Roka, “It is the freest, fastest wetsuit ever built.”

CLICK BOOKS & ORDER YOUR COPY!

Hanging at the beach or chilling on the porch, there’s nothing like a good book to keep you company on a hot summer day… and a rainy one too. From literary masterpieces to trashy bestsellers, new releases to old classics, here are 9 of our favorite sporty beach books for Summer 2016. Baseball, football, surfing, climbing and more… even if you don’t like sports, we think you’ll still enjoy these timeless stories and compelling reads.

BARBARIAN DAYS by William Finnegan (2015)

Surfing only looks like a sport. To initiates, it is something else: a beautiful addiction, a demanding course of study, a morally dangerous pastime, a way of life. Winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Autobiography, Barbarian Days is William Finnegan’s memoir of an obsession. Says Sports Illustrated, “Reading this guy on the subject of waves and water is like reading Hemingway on bullfighting.” Raised in California and Hawaii, Finnegan started surfing as a child. He has chased waves all over the world, wandering for years through the South Pacific, Australia, Asia, and Africa. Barbarian Days is an old-school adventure story, an intellectual autobiography, a social history, and an extraordinary exploration of the gradual mastering of an exacting, little-understood art.

SHOE DOG by Phil Knight (2016)

In this candid and riveting memoir, for the first time ever, Nike founder and board chairman Phil Knight shares the inside story of the company’s early days as an intrepid start-up and its evolution into one of the world’s most iconic, game-changing, and profitable brands. The man behind the swoosh, has always been a mystery. Now, in a memoir that’s surprising, humble, unfiltered, funny, and beautifully crafted, he tells his story at last.

HOUSE OF NAILS: A MEMOIR OF LIFE ON THE EDGE by Lenny Dykstra (2016)

Nicknamed “Nails” for his hustle and grit, Lenny Dykstra approached the game of baseball — and life — with mythic intensity. During his decade in the majors as a center fielder for the legendary 1980s Mets and the 1990s Phillies, he was named to three All-Star teams and played in two of the most memorable World Series of the modern era. Tobacco-stained, steroid-powered, and booze-and-drug-fueled, “Nails” also defined a notorious era of excess in baseball. Funny, unflinchingly honest, and irresistibly readable, House of Nails makes no apologies and leaves nothing left unsaid.

Rob Pruitt x J.Crew

ROB PRUITT FOR J.CREW

J.Crew has just launched a collection of 3 rash guards in collaboration with artist Rob Pruitt. Inspired by his Gradient Faces Series, 50% of the proceeds from these rash guard will be donated to the Skin Cancer Foundation in support of UV Safety month for July.

Rob Pruitt is a contemporary American conceptual artist whose work is notoriously eclectic, humorous, and ironic. Describing his own work, Pruitt has said his pieces are “basically blown-up versions of dining table craft projects.” A common thread in his work is multiplicity and he often creates serial paintings that share the same subject yet contain twists in composition. His Gradient Faces series is an example: scrawled line drawings of different facial expressions which are then transferred onto color gradients and flocked.

The Rob Pruitt for J.Crew collection is now available at J.Crew. Says Pruitt, “Seeing my art on a rash guard is like seeing my art on a human body as opposed to a canvas. I like how it changes from person to person.”

We like how it changes from surfer to surfer!

The Barclays Center hosted the 2016 NBA Draft Thursday evening, filled to capacity with a raucous crowd of fans exploding as each new player was selected for their team. As predicted by most, Ben Simmons was the No.1 pick, going to the Philadelphia 76ers; followed by Brandon Ingram at No. 2 selected by the LA Lakers; and Jaylen Brown at No.3 going to the Boston Celtics.

Swiss watchmakers Tissot, the Official Timekeeper of the NBA, gifted each first round draft pick with a personalized Tissot NBA PRC 200 watch, and on the spot engraved the caseback with the players name and number drafted. While these newly inducted players into the NBA will likely change teams over the course of their careers, the number they were selected in the draft will never change. These same watches are available for sale on NBAStore.com and tissotwatches.com.

Also are available are a fun collection of NBA themed watches, the Tissot Quickster Quartz Chronograph. With their bright multi-striped bands that match the team colors of 10 different teams in the league –including recent NBA Champions, the Cleveland Cavaliers — basketball fan or not, at $395 these watches make the perfect summer accessory.

The Aloha Shirt

The Hawaiian or “Aloha” shirt has been a cultural icon of the Hawaiian Islands and surf history for than 75 years. Still as popular as ever, collectors on eBay and at New York auction houses are paying thousands of dollars for a single shirt that cost less than a dollar in 1935. Now a half-billion-dollar-a-year industry, the Aloha shirt holds its legacy as a palpable symbol of Hawaii’s “Aloha Spirit.”

The newly updated edition of The Aloha Shirt: Spirit of the Islands (Patagonia Books) by Dale Hope is the complete book on the most enduring souvenir ever invented. It recounts the colorful stories behind these marvelous shirts celebrating the waterman culture and lifestyle, lavishly illustrated with hundreds of full color images, vintage black-and-white photos, and priceless examples of period “Hawaiiana.”

First developed in the early 1930s as a “tourist attraction,” Aloha shirts have their roots in the graphic prints and comfortable clothing that South Seas islanders have been wearing for hundreds of years. Around 1935, a small group of clothing manufacturers in Honolulu began to produce these wildly colorful, “air-conditioned” short-sleeved shirts for tourists that would give them an immediate sense of relaxation, and going “Hawaiian.” The shirts were considered “postcards you can wear.”

Shock To The System

As athletes, we are always on the quest for the latest innovation in sports medicine to prevent injuries from taking us out of the game. One of this editor’s go to resources is Duke Chiropractic, which offers full service sports rehabilitation. The latest innovation we discovered there is called “EPAT” or “Radial Shockwave Therapy.” EPAT stands for Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology, and is one of the most advanced and highly effective non-invasive treatments for neuromuscular disorders approved by the FDA.

In an overuse injury of a muscle or tendon, when we experience pain it is usually a result of inflammation. The body’s natural response is to create scar tissue to help heal the area, but according to Dr. Scott Duke of Duke Chiropractic, scar tissue reduces mobility, it is very weak and tears, and leads to the formation of more scar tissue and more pain. Probably most critical is that it lacks the blood supply to nourish and heal the injured area.

Enter EPAT, a regenerative treatment for tendon, muscle and bone disorders. Through a pneumatically controlled hand piece, compressed air produces a shockwave that delivers thousands of impulses deep within the tissue. These high frequency pressure waves feel like rapid fire zaps, and stimulate the body’s own reparative reaction, to enhance blood circulation and accelerate the healing process. Says Dr. Duke, ”With EPAT we can literally destroy scar tissue and help regenerate new tissue within the joint that prior to EPAT was too deep for our hands to reach.”

EPAT can be used to treat many painful soft tissue injuries, including Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, acute and chronic muscle pain and other conditions. At Duke Chiropractic they also use EPAT to treat frozen shoulder, post operative rotator cuff injuries, and even hip and knee replacements where scar tissue limits mobility and causes pain.

Radial Shockwave Therapy can also help the body produce more collagen — the protein that helps give tendons and ligaments their structure. There is an analgesic effect as well that can provide immediate pain relief. But probably the best news for athletes is that patients can continue activities immediately after treatment. There is no down time for those of us for whom there is nothing worse than being sidelined by a nagging injury.

To Be A Young Gymnast

COUNTDOWN TO RIO 2016

Just a couple months from now, all eyes will be on Rio and the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Gymnastics is one of the marquee and most anticipated sports of the Games. Every four years the world focuses their attention on a group of young girls from a host of nations, competing for that coveted gold medal, as both a team and individuals. It is the time between Olympics, however, when gymnasts toil in relative obscurity, working towards their goal. By the time these kids get to the Games, still just teenagers, they will have spent countless hours of their young lives in the gym, training for this moment, with millions watching, on the biggest sport stage in the world.

My 11-year old niece, Ellie, is a competitive gymnast, training with her teammates Talia, Sophie, Sophia, Gia, Abby, Daisy, Cassie, Hannah, Willa, CeCe, Cecily, Charlotte, Amelia and Galena on the NYC Elite team. Ellie competed in Level 6 last season. Each level is designated 1 through 10 by the US Gymnastics Association and characterized by increasingly difficult skill requirements. With her teammates, Ellie is looking to move up to Level 7 or 8 next year. With three gym locations in Manhattan, NYC Elite is considered the best team in New York City and is the only structured developmental gymnastics program in town. The girls are handpicked to be members of the team.

For those of you who follow the Style Of Sport Instagram, you might have noticed I’m amazed/obsessed by Ellie and her crew. She is what I dream and pretend to be… a real “athlete.” Watching her evolve into this level of gymnast, performing the moves I could never imagine any relative of mine being able to do, is mind blowing, but what’s most impressive is the time and dedication it takes.

nyc-elite-2

Last season, Ellie and her teammates trained 4 hours a day, 4 days a week. This coming year the commitment goes up to 20 hours, which means every day after school, from 4pm to 8pm, they will be in the gym training; not just practicing their events, but doing all-around conditioning as well. When practice is done, they will go home to eat dinner, do their homework and sleep. It’s a schedule not so different from a professional athlete, except they are not professionals, they are little girls. They have a saying at NYC Elite: If gymnastics were easy, they would call it football.

There are 5 spots on the Olympic Gymnastics team for Rio 2016 — a decrease from the previous 6. For Tokyo 2020 it is being reduced again to 4. Given how many great gymnasts there are and how few spots there are on the team, it is a long shot for any of these girls to make the Olympic team in 2020, but their commitment at such a young age is what makes them contenders.

Neil Latham: American Thoroughbred

Opening Thursday, June 9, at Steven Kasher Gallery in New York is Neil Latham: American Thoroughbred, an exhibition that features over 25 large-scale black and white photographs of America’s greatest race horses. The show is being held in conjunction with the publication of Latham’s monograph American Thoroughbred on the eve of the 2016 Belmont Stakes.

The collection of images represents a 3-year journey in which Latham fully immersed himself into the sport of horse racing and its thoroughbreds. A drive upstate into horse country north of New York City, to clear his head after his mother’s passing, inspired the project with a chance spotting of a horse and a familiar muscularity. “I saw the muscular shoulder of a horse standing by a fence, and I flashed on my mother’s similar back shoulder as she worked in her rose garden,” says Latham. “I stopped breathing. I hit the brakes and stared.”

Convincing the most notable owners and trainers to let him photograph their multimillion-dollar racehorses, the project took him from the racetrack of Saratoga to the horse farms of Kentucky to the ranches of Southern California, where he photographed such thoroughbred legends as A.P. Indy, Curlin, Tapit, Rachel Alexandra, and Zenyatta — as well as American Pharoah, last year’s heralded Triple Crown winner.

g-tapit-img043_result_result copy

The images are studied portraits of these animals, graphic and architectural, each one carefully planned and sketched out in advance. Traveling with a portable studio, he photographed the horses on a black backdrop, 20 feet tall by 36 feet wide, which was rotated 10 degrees every fifteen minutes to maintain the perfect angle to the sun. He decided to use only natural lighting and chose to shoot on film with medium and large-format cameras. “To portray true essence, the image has to be truthful. I used film because it can’t be manipulated like digital photography. Film also gives a softness and subtlety that enhanced the emotional connection.”

Gap x Bielmann

Brian Bielmann, 58, has been a surf photographer for almost 40 years, and is one of the biggest names in the industry. His nephew, Brent Beilmann, 25, is the hot new lensman in the water, whose images are regularly featured on the pages of Surfing magazine. Both are distinguished by their fearlessness — getting on the waves with their subjects, and putting us in the water with the world’s best surfers.

A few months ago, Brian got a phone call from the Gap saying they were interested in producing a line of surf t-shirts with his images. He then got a phone call from his nephew saying he had received the same call. As it turned out, both were being followed on Instagram by two different people at the Gap who thought the two Bielmanns were one. Once they realized the two were related and what a fun story that was, the concept of featuring the images of both photographers in the Gap x Bielmann Surfer Graphic Tee collection was born.

“I’ve been shooting on the front lines and have paved the way for surf photographers in the present, including Brent, who’s carrying on the Bielmann name, continuing to push the limits by getting deeper inside the barrel in death defying waves”, says Brian. “My story of starting out as young photographer, almost dying on the reef and hitting head first, lead me into shooting more than surfing, making the Bielmann name a household name. Brent’s story was more about having to live up to the Bielmann name, and ending up really pushing new boundaries. It’s really a mentor and tutor kind of theme, and now we are both still killing it.”

The 6-piece collection features 3 images from each and is now available online at Gap.com. To read more about Brian and view a portfolio of his work, check out this feature we did in 2014: PORTFOLIO: BRIAN BIELMANN

Day At The Races

CLOCKWISE TOP LEFT: RACE NO. 6 OF THE DAY; PREAKNESS VILLAGE VIP PASS; CHRISTINE A. MOORE MILLINERY HATS ON SALE; STARTING GATES; THE WOODLAWN VASE, THE WINNER’S TROPHY

Saturday saw the running of the 141st Preakness Stakes on a wet and muddy track that changed the odds in the second leg of the Triple Crown. The win went to Exaggerator, one tough mudder, who surged in the final stretch to beat Nyquist — winner of this year’s Kentucky Derby and favored horse to win the race. While it is disappointing there will be no Triple Crown winner this year, it was a big win for Exagerrator, his over first over Nyquist after 4 attempts — including the Kentucky Derby, in which Exaggerator came in second.

As a guest of Longines, the Official Watch and Timekeeper of the Triple Crown, I got to see it all go down first hand. One of the coolest moments of the day was coincidentally being in the administrative offices of Pimlico Race Course, as the winner’s trophy, the Woodlawn Vase, was carried in by Army Sgt.1st Class Jonathan McGlone. The Woodlawn Vase was first awarded in 1861 to a stakes winning mare named Molly Jackson in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1917, it became the official trophy of the second jewel of the Triple Crown and was awarded to the Preakness winner Kalitan.

W.O.W! Al Roker & Deborah Roberts

AL ROKER, YOUR EDITOR, AND DEBORAH ROBERTS AT CITYROW

Photography by @Imagista

Al Roker and Deborah Roberts are just like any married couple raising a family, except a little more high profile. He is the jovial weatherman known to more than 30 million viewers as one of the stars of the Today show; and she is the venerable ABC News journalist and 20/20 correspondent, regularly making her own appearances on morning television as a reporter for Good Morning America. With sixteen Emmy Awards between them, Al Roker and Deborah Roberts are the first couple of television news.

Been There, Done That: Family Wisdom For Modern Times by Al Roker and Deborah Roberts is the new book this powerhouse duo have co-authored. Presented in a back and forth, “he said, she said” format, with stories told by each, the book gives an inside look at their daily lives as a couple, as parents, and as a family — that off camera are not much different from our own. In a funny, heartfelt, and honest collection of personal anecdotes, Al and Deborah share the life lessons learned and wisdom gained facing the challenges of a busy professional couple, raising kids in New York City, while focusing on maintaining a successful relationship of their own.

With two distinctive personalities, what makes the book a fun read is Al and Deborah’s different ways of looking at the same thing. This holds true when it comes to fitness. They have opposite body types, and while Deborah, naturally slim, loves working out and running in Central Park, Al, now half the size he once was, will tell you “I hate it.” Regardless he gets it done at 4:45 every morning before he goes on air.

America’s Cup Sails Into NYC

America’s Cup racing hit the harbor of New York City this weekend for the first time since 1920 and so did the crowds, as throngs of spectators lined the waterfronts of lower Manhattan and Jersey City to watch this world-class sailing competition. After a rainy week, and windless Saturday which cancelled the race, the sun finally came out on Sunday to shine brightly on a thrilling winner-take-all final.

No lead was safe as the wind shifted through wide arcs from the west to the north. It ranged anywhere from 5 to 20 knots — stopping the boats dead in the water, then slingshoting them forward with huge gusts. Emirates Team New Zealand dramatically unhooked itself from a starting buoy tangled on its rudder, and tactfully maneuvered the win in the opening event of the 2016 Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series.

The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series is the preliminary competition among the six countries in the 35th America’s Cup — United States, Great Britain, France, Japan, New Zealand and Sweden — to be held in Bermuda in June of 2017. Points earned count toward the final competition and determine who will take on defending champion Oracle Team USA.

Roka Rocks

ROKA R1 SWIM GOGGLE

Every now and again a new sport line comes along that so beautifully fuses design with functionality, you lust for a piece of gear or item of clothing even if you’re not a participant in that sport. ROKA, a triathlon focused performance brand that launched in 2013 with a revolutionary wetsuit, the Maverick Pro, is one of those lines.

ROKA was founded by two former All-American Stanford swimmers, who after competing in their first Half Ironman triathlon, set out to build a better wetsuit — a faster wetsuit — one that actually enhanced the body mechanics they’d spent years in the pool training to perfect. The wetsuit gained instant recognition among the top triathletes and world champions for record swim times. Later this month a new state of the art wetsuit, the Maverick X, will debut. Available on pre-order, it has triathletes buzzing and lined up to get into one, regardless of the $900 price tag.

MAVERICK X WETSUIT

For a much less expensive, but equally sleek piece of gear from ROKA, the new R1 Goggle ($35) is also now available on pre-order. Rethinking the goggle specifically for open water swimming, ROKA has developed RAPIDSIGHT technology that radically opens the forward viewing plane in the head-down swim position. The architecture along the top frame of the goggle has been minimized and a tilted lens design opens the field of view in the forward movement plane. This design offers a distinct competitive advantage for open water swimmers by allowing for better target spotting of things like buoys and other swimmers, with less disruption to form and mechanics. The R1 is ROKA’s fourth goggle frame to feature SPCTRM, a lens collection that offers the optimal tint for every condition: predawn darkness, fog, haze, transition light, glare, and bright sun in natural and urban environments.

Sexy mesh, oversized logos, and varsity style are combined for a cool mix of gym gone glam. A sophisticated palette of black, white, grays, and neutrals are offset with the addition cobalt in the mix. Compression fits, seemless support, and wicking fabrics accentuate the comfort and performance focus of the line. The number 4 plays throughout — the date of Beyoncé, her mother, and her husband’s Jay-Z’s birthdays, as well as the couple’s wedding anniversary.

Martone Cycling Goes Hollywood

MARTONE CYCLING CO. LA POP-UP

Opening today in West Hollywood, CA. is the first Martone Cycling Co. pop-up shop. Along with the chic and playful Martone bicycles, the shop will be carrying a myriad of athletic and “athleisure” brands, plus sporty accessories, curated by us here at Style of Sport! Some of our favorite brands like Onzie, Tracksmith, Alala, MPG Sport, and Vuarnet (the iconic sunglass brand recently relaunched in the US!) will be featured in the store.

Designed in New York City, the brightly colored monochromatic Martone bicycles are as rugged as they are fashionable. Composed of steel alloy and aluminum, with puncture resistant tires to take on city streets, the bikes weigh in at a mere 26 pounds with the basket. The brand’s main differentiator in functionality is the “MCC Duomatic,” an innovative SRAM 2 speed gear system that shifts gears automatically depending on slope and speed. MCC is the only bicycle brand to employ this technology in the United States, letting the rider glide smoothly, and of course, in style!

Located at 8366 ½ W. 3rd Street (between Orlando and Sweetzer) in West Hollywood, the pop-up will be open throughout the month of April. Produced in conjunction with Liberty Fairs, the shop will offer Angelenos a unique peek into the world of Martone Cycling, with bicycles, activewear and accessories made for the LA lifestyle.

Available in four chic color combos, they’re made from a lightweight, high-wicking fabric and designed for comfort, grip and protection on warm weather rides. TREK 7.4 FX $769.99. As you may have noticed one of our favorite colors is orange, and we’re obsessed with this Trek! Lightweight and agile, the Trek 7.4 FX offers the speed of a road bike with the comfort of a city bike — perfect for fitness, commuting, or just zipping around.

CENTER COLUMN: ASSOS ZEGHO AMPLIFY SUNGLASSES $439. Looking as much like fashion opticals as sport shades, these flashy bike sunglasses are as equally dedicated to technical performance as style. Yes, they have a hefty price tag, but Assos partnered with Carl Zeiss Optics to create the ultimate lightweight, durable, one-piece lens with zero optical distortion — even at its curviest parts. The Zeiss lens spans and contours the face for a full 180 degree field of view, and a unique tinting gradient called “Tunnel Vision” provides optimal vision in changing light conditions. The Zeiss coating that hardens the lens is also anti-smudge, anti-static, hydrophobic and oleophobic for the ultimate protection on the road. ADIDAS PUREBOOST X WOMENS RUNNING SHOES $120. The newest entry into the very popular BOOST category from Adidas is the PureBOOST X that features the first ever floating arch. While most running shoes are adaptations of male shoes, the contours of the female foot inspired its design, and the high performance PureBOOST X was created purely with the female athlete in mind. The adaptive stretch mesh wraps underneath the midfoot to hug and support the foot throughout the run, while the BOOST midsole unleashes powerful energy and responsive cushioning. TANGRAM FACTORY SMART ROPE $79.98.  Jumping rope goes high tech with this LED embedded jump rope that displays your fitness data midair while you work out. 2 sets of ball bearings in each handle create a smooth movement, while magnetic sensors track jumps. With the Smart Rope app, “Smart Gym”, you can also track calories burned, interval training, time elapsed, and other fitness data. Click here to see how it works.

RIGHT COLUMN: ULTRACOR LEVEL PERFORATED CROP TOP $117. This sportbra is definitely worth taking your shirt off! Its quick drying and moisture wicking stretch fabric is perforated at the front and back for ventilation with chic sporty style. TORY SPORT SPLASH LEGGINGS $150. Add a high-energy burst of color to your workout with these Splash leggings. Engineered with the highest-quality Tactel® nylon fiber for performance, they’re super soft, lightweight, and stretchy for comfort. Check Tory Sport stores for availability. SPEEDO COLORBLOCK VEE CUT $69. Lap swimming can be dull, but not in this sexy cut out swimsuit! Speedo Endurance Lite resists the dragging, sagging, and bagging for better workouts and more fun in the pool.

Meter: The Runner’s Review

METER:THE RUNNER’S REVIEW is the quarterly print magazine published by Tracksmith, the relatively new but old school running apparel brand. The line takes its inspiration from the classic running styles of the 1970’s, and combines the look with modern performance fabrics.

Like Tracksmith, METER celebrates the culture and heritage of competitive running. With authenticity and simplicity, the photography and design presents the grace, intensity, and beauty of competitive running at its humblest, and the stories pay homage to its fabled athletes and races. Says Matt Taylor, CEO and Co-Founder of Tracksmith, “METER gives us an opportunity to explore the edges of running culture while also celebrating the history and traditions that make it the greatest and most accessible sport in the world. There’s no other place to get these types of stories.”

Available in single issue or subscription, the publications’s fourth issue is now available at Tracksmith.com. It is relay themed, with features such as: “The Women of the Penn Relays”, about the oldest track meet in the world and one at which women were not always welcome; “Izumo Ekiden”, one of Japan’s hugely popular road relays; and “Hood to Coast”, a 198-mile relay that starts halfway up Oregon’s Mt.Hood and finishes in the coastal town of Seaside.

Tory Sport Opens Shop

TORY SPORT FLATIRON

Coinciding with the release of their spring/summer collection, the second season of Tory Sport, is the brand’s much anticipated new store, prominently located in the Flatiron district of Manhattan. An assortment of other sport and fitness brands like Athleta, Nike Running, and New Balance have opened up flagship stores in this area in the last few years, as well as most recently the chic workout wear emporium, Bandier, making it a mecca for those looking for the hippest athletic and “athleisure” apparel.

Tory Sport, the activewear line from Tory Burch, debuted last fall with a pop-up that took over the Tory Burch store on Elizabeth St. Classic and elegant, yet playful and sporty, the spacious new store reflects the spirit of the line. Blue awnings and large screens, featuring videos and images that celebrate the grace and strength of athletes, pop against the building’s historic façade. The interior plays with contrast, providing a clean and minimal backdrop that lets the colorful palette and playful patterns of the new season pop.

Flatiron-1A-copy

Said CEO and Designer Tory Burch, “We thought about the casual vibe of a 70’s surf lodge and reimagined it with Scandinavian design principles.” The feel is chic sports club, with subtle references throughout — leather handrails evoke the grips of old-school tennis racquets, striped floors resemble pool lap lines, and a diamond pattern etched into nickel wall panels references a tennis net. Spring Cleaning: 8 Essential Detox Tips

SHANEY JO DARDEN, FOUNDER OF THE KEEP A BREAST FOUNDATION

Shaney Jo Darden is the Founder of the Keep A Breast Foundation (KAB), a non-profit organization she established in 2005 in response to the growing need for breast cancer awareness programs targeting young people. As a young woman herself, she had a number of friends who were diagnosed with breast cancer in their 20s and it was a wake up call to how early in life breast cancer can strike. She realized the conversation about breast cancer prevention needed to start much earlier, amongst her peers and in a language they spoke.

Keep A Breast began as an art movement. As a young designer in the creative scene of skateboard industry in the 90’s, Shaney jo drew upon the artistic community as a natural breeding ground for awareness and communication. Producing art shows at the time, she wanted to create something closer to the cause. What evolved was a series of customized breast casts, first of friends, painted by different influential artists such as Shepard Fairey and Ed Templeton, and later pro snowboarders, that in 2000 were officially showcased in an exhibition called Keep A Breast.

Keep A Breast shows were organized across the U.S. and throughout Europe, with growing participation by celebrity castees and artists. The success of these art benefits, highlighted by artists emerging from the skateboarding, music and action sports scenes, put breast cancer awareness on the map for a younger generation. Other youth oriented educational programs followed and today the Keep A Breast Foundation has three core programs, Traveling Education Booth, Treasured Chest, and most recently, Non Toxic Revolution — all of which promote breast cancer awareness through Art, Education, Awareness and Action.

While breast cancer is something the media generally focuses on in October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we should be conscious year round of the things we can do to prevent it. As spring officially kicks off, there is no better time than the present. With that in mind, we asked Shaney jo for some specific clean up tips to start the season off right…

W.O.W! Working Out With The Men of Wilhelmina

AT FLEX STUDIOS WITH MODEL CHRIS RYAN, SOS EDITOR CLAUDIA LEBENTHAL,
WILHELMINA CEO BILL WACKERMANN, AND MODEL CJ KOEGEL

PHOTOGRAPHY BY @IMAGISTA

Bill Wackermann is the CEO of Wilhelmina International Inc, having recently taken the helm at the famed modeling agency at the end of January. Although our paths had not crossed previously, Bill and I have common bond, having both spent many years at Condé Nast – he on the business side, most recently as the publisher of Condé Nast Traveler and Glamour, and me on the editorial side at Allure, Womens Sports & Fitness and Self.

Bill is someone who clearly takes his workouts very seriously–not just for the physical benefits, but also the spiritual ones. For this installment of W.O.W, we decided to try something new, a workout neither one of us had done before. Imagine my disappointment (not!), when Bill’s publicist asked if he could bring along two of Wilhelmina’s male models to join us — especially when I checked out the portfolios of CJ Koegel and Chris Ryan. All I can say is these are the days when I really do love my job.

We met up early Monday morning to check out the Flex 90 class at Flex Studios, a jam-packed 90-minute combo of TRX, Barre, and Pilates (30 minutes each). Taught by Jessica Cadden Osborne, coincidentally a Wilhelmina fitness model herself who we featured last summer in a SUP Yoga story, she put us all through our paces in one relentless, supercharged workout.

wow-flex-trx-1

PART 1 OF FLEX 90: TRX

While we both spend a lot of time working out, TRX, Barre, and Pilates are workouts you can’t fake your way through. On their own, they’re challenging enough, but together they are a brutal. They force you to use those little muscles that the big ones usually compensate for — in addition to a whole lot of core. Bill and I had our fitness put to the test, and I’m proud to say we held our own against the young studs. We chatted the next day about the workout, his new job, and how his approach to fitness is very much in tune with his philosophy on professional success:

Priority Goes Cruising

PRIORITY COAST

Our friends at Priority Bike have just announced a Kickstarter campaign for the newest addition to their line up, the Priority Coast — the first cruiser bike that’s really made for the beach. Designed to withstand sand, salt, and all the elements the coastal beach environment can muster, the Coast will not rust or breakdown like traditional cruisers.

Distinctive to all the bikes in the Priority family is the maintenance and grease-free belt drive system of the Coast in place of a traditional chain. This feature, along with a 100% aluminum frame and fork, stainless steel components and sealed bearings, makes the clunky, heavy steel, hard-to-pedal cruiser a bike of the past. The lightweight, smooth-riding Coast is ideal for riding to the beach for that morning surf session, yoga class, and all your outdoor activities. It even has a surfboard attachment for easy transportation with your board!

Remaining true to Priority’s socially-funded company structure, the pre-sale campaign will run on Kickstarter March 15th through April 15 at the pre-sale price of $349 (regular price $449). And stay tuned, because we’ll be giving one away to a lucky Style of Sport reader as summer gets closer!

On Deck: Photos by Spike

PHOTOS BY SPIKE SKATEBOARD DECKS

Timed coincidentally with the launch of the new cable TV channel from Vice Media, Viceland, of which Spike Jonze is co-president, is a series of skateboards featuring some of the photographer and filmmaker’s most iconic early images. Girl Skateboard Company, which Jonze co-founded in 1993, has just released the “Photos by Spike” board series and reproduced five of his favorite images that include The Beastie Boys (1994), Sonic Youth (1992), Bjork (1995), Nirvana (1991) and Karen O (2004).

Jonze began his career in the action sports world as a photographer shooting BMX and skateboarding for such vertical magazines as Freestylin’ and TransWorld Skateboarding. It was such skateboarding videos as “Video Days”, shot with his inimitable wit and point of view, often while skateboarding himself, that led to directing music videos as the Southern California skate culture intersected with the alternative music scene. The skateboarding footage he shot as cameraman for 100% by Sonic Youth got the attention of MTV in the early 90’s, and he went on to direct music videos for bands like Weezer, The Breeders, and later The Beastie Boys, creating some of their most memorable videos like Sabotage. Jonze’s feature film debut as director was “Being John Malkovich”, followed by such other notable classics as “Adaptation”, “Where The Wild Things Are”, and “Her”, which he also wrote and won the Oscar for Best Writing, Original Screenplay in 2014.

The Photos by Spike decks are available now at your local skateboard shop and March 16th online at crailstore.com. Like all things Spike Jonze, these skateboard decks are guaranteed to become pop cult classics.

Cycle for Survival

Earlier this week, Cycle for Survival, announced they had hit an incredible fundraising milestone… $100 million dollars! Cycle for Survival is an indoor cycling event that has become a national movement. Hosted by Equinox, in partnership with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, it was founded in 2007 by Jennifer Goodman Linn — a Memorial Sloan Kettering patient and Equinox member — with her husband, Dave, following Jen’s own rare cancer diagnosis. They wanted to do something to fight back. Despite losing her battle with cancer in 2011, Jen continues to inspire to this day.

From the $250,000 raised in its first year, to over $29 million already in 2016, now in its 10th year, Cycle for Survival has distinguished itself as the fastest-growing athletic fundraising event. 100 percent of every dollar raised goes directly to fund research and clinical trials led by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for rare cancers that include brain, pancreatic, ovarian, stomach, all types of pediatric cancers, and many others. These account for approximately half of all cancer diagnoses, and are often underfunded. Doctors and researchers who have received Cycle for Survival funding credit these resources for making groundbreaking discoveries possible. I am proud to say as a member of Stacey’s Crew, with just our two bikes we raised $15,667!

STACEY’S CREW: SOULCYCLE’S STACEY GRIFFITH & YOUR EDITOR, CLAUDIA LEBENTHAL

The Cycle for Survival rides take place at Equinox locations in over 15 cities across the country, with multiple rides in each. This year more than 27,000 riders will participate as members of self-formed teams that take 4 consecutive 50-minute spin classes, seeking donations in support for this cycling marathon. There are national teams as well, with riders participating in more than just one event. To look at the leaderboard of fundraising totals for these National Teams is pretty inspiring in itself… $444,492 for Team Perry, $300,734 for Team Ginger Strong, and $280,385 for JP Morgan Chase, just to name a few.

So besides seeking to inform, this post is seeking donations for our team or any other that might inspire you to give. $10, $25, $50, $100 or more… as I always say, there is no such thing as a small donation. Just give something… what you’d spend on a latte, bottle of wine, or nice dinner with friends. Or give a whole lot! You’ll feel good and won’t have to ride a bike for almost 4 hours!

Continuing their collaboration with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc. for a third season, this collection features the artist’s most famous wallpaper graphics, pop art flowers and cows, reproduced on the classic Chuck’ 70 design, and using modern details to celebrate the original Chuck Taylor All Star from the 1970’s.

There are currently 3 different hightop and 2 low top florals available, plus 2 t-shirt styles in full bloom for spring 2016!

W.O.W! Working Out With Tim Morehouse

THREE TIME OLYMPIC FENCER TIM MOREHOUSE (TOP) & YOUR EDITOR
PHOTOGRAPHY BY @IMAGISTA

Based on Manhattan’s Upper West Side is the Tim Morehouse Fencing Club, where I had an opportunity to bout and chat last week with three time Olympian Tim Morehouse. Currently, Tim is probably most recognized as the fencer in those Chase Mastery commercials with Serena Williams and The Rockettes, but its Tim’s silver medal in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, that have brought him fame and recognition as one of the sport’s greats.

Founded in 2015, Tim Morehouse Fencing Club teaches the Olympic sport of saber fencing  — one of the three disciplines of the sport that include epee and foil, and in which he won his Olympic medal. Sabre is based on the cavalry sword and you hit with sides of the blade, as opposed to foil and epee where you hit with the tip. The club offers classes and instruction for competitors of all ages and ability levels, but it is his work with kids that is most noteworthy. Founder of “Fencing In The Schools“, Tim is passionate about sharing the sport he fell in love with at age 13, and giving the same opportunities he had to inner city and rural school kids.

“My life was profoundly changed when I stumbled upon the sport of fencing and a coach who believed in me,” says Tim. “When I started, I thought I was just playing a sport, but something unexpected happened at practice. While I was working on turning on the scoring light, I was also turning on my internal light, awakening my own potential and illuminating the path to becoming my best self.” It is his mission to “Turn The Light On” for students across the country and help them become engaged, active, confident adults who can set goals and exceed them, lead a team, and have a positive impact on the world.

As a lifelong athlete, very appreciative of the self confidence and positive foundation sports provide from an early age, and the aunt of a competitive gymnast we featured in To be a Young Gymnast, I wanted to hear more about his sport — both the physical and mental aspects of fencing, its benefits for young and old, and who we should have our eyes on this summer in Rio at the Olympic games.

Redford plays a ruthlessly ambitious skier competing in Europe for Olympic gold and Gene Hackman is the coach who tries to temper his narcissistic drive for glory. Read More

Elevation Mask Training

YOUR EDITOR WORKING OUT WITH THE ELEVATION TRAINING MASK 2.0

If you’ve ever skied out West, you’re familiar with the lack of oxygen at high altitudes and have experienced elevation training. You may have noticed how super human you feel when you return to sea level — a result of your aerobic threshold having increased by adjusting to the air up there. Athletes often opt to train at altitudes. Oxygen deprivation increases the production of red blood cells, which aids oxygen delivery to the muscles, giving them a competitive edge.

There is no need to leave home any longer to train at altitude. The Elevation Training Mask 2.0 mimics training at a high altitude. It adjusts between 3,000 and 18,000 feet, by controlling the flow of air delivered to the body, and trains your lungs to use oxygen more efficiently. The Seattle Seahawks star running back Marshawn Lynch is often seen warming up on the sidelines with his mask on. The Miami Heat’s Dwayne Wade posted a picture last summer of the whole team using elevation training masks.

The masks are now popping up in gyms across the country, as reported recently in both Cosmopolitan and Womens Healthand this editor couldn’t resist giving one a try. I was put through the paces by James Brewer at Exceed Physical Culture, who uses the mask with clients looking to max out their workouts. From slower movements like dumbbell flys and presses, to full body moves like squats, plyometrics, and the sled push shown above, I did find the mask forces you to be more conscientious of your breathing, and take slower breaths in rhythm with the exercise you’re performing. If you’ve ever gone scuba diving, the sensation is similar to breathing through a regulator. The other thing I noticed, which reminded me of the feeling after a non-stop ski run out West, was my abs contracted with that heavy breathing — a bonus core workout. Read More

The store is filled with jackets, pants, hats and base layers of French, Italian, Austrian, Swedish, German, and Swiss lines like Fusalp, DuveticaFrauenshcuh,  E11, Ortovox, Eisbar and Kru. Win These Skis for Valentines Day!

ENTER OUR SKI VALENTINES DAY GIVEAWAY!

To show our love for you this Valentines Day, STYLE OF SPORT is giving away a pair of the almost sold out, 2016 RENOUN skis! And these are not just any skis. Recently featured in The New York Times, United Hemispheres, and USA Today for their breakthrough innovation, these IPSO Gold Medal award winning skis — top prize in the industry — are completely revolutionary.

Utilizing a Hyper Damping Technology™, the stiffness of the RENOUN ski automatically adjusts to changing terrain and conditions. RENOUN Founder and ski engineer, 24-year old wunderkind Cyrus Schenck, discovered that by injecting a layer what’s known as “non-Newtonian polymer” into the core the skis — a malleable compound that stiffens with impact — he could create the ultimate all mountain ski. On hard pack they maintain stiffness, but in soft snow and powder they flex. CLICK HERE for a demo and watch as Schenck molds the compound around a beer bottle, smashes it, and it remains intact. The technology also helps to eliminate the problem of ski chatter at high speeds by helping them absorb more vibrations, while at lower speeds or in powder, they are lively and responsive.

Tea Totaler

TEAVANA WELLNESS TEAS

Besides just waking up and calming down, tea is known for its many health benefits. Health food stores have long had aisles dedicated just to tea, with blends that aid digestion, boost the immune system, sooth tension, and support healthy organ function, among many other things.

The Tea Council of the USA reported Americans consumed more than 80 billion servings of tea in 2014 and their interest in the health benefits of tea is growing. So much so, that earlier this month, Teavana, which is owned by Starbucks, launched a new line of seven wellness teas. Each loose-leaf blend has a wellness theme with a unique mix of tealeaves, fruits and botanicals.

Rejuvenate is a morning tea and contains a mix of black tea and yerba mate with hints of cinnamon and cardamom. The Rejuvenate blend is the highest in caffeine content, meant to invigorate and inspire you for the day ahead. Defense is a low-caff white tea blend with tangs of blackberry and contains 50% of the recommended daily dose of Vitamin C. Purify, another white tea with hints of jasmine and orange petals, promotes hydration and healthy skin. Rev Up is a bold blend of black tea, green tea, and high quality Chinese oolong with hints of peach, apricot and mango made to support a healthy metabolism. Recover is a detoxifying green and mint tea that also contains 50% of the daily dose of Vitamin C. Comfort is a mix of spearmint and peppermint with hints of ginger, lemon and rooibos meant to sooth and uplift. Serenity, an evening tea, is a calming blend of chamomile, orange and rose.

Each tea blend offers a unique flavor that promotes an important component of wellness. The teas cost $12.50 each for 2 ounces of loose leaf tea. They are now available at 350 of Teavana’s retail stores and online at Teavana.com

CFDA + NFL SUPER BOWL 50 DESIGNER FOOTBALLS
CLOCKWISE TOP LEFT: MARK MCNAIRY; NICOLE MILLER; LISA PERRY; TANYA TAYLOR; SHINOLA; TODD SNYDER; SANGLIM LEE; MICHAEL BASTIAN

As they did two years ago with a football helmet collaboration, the NFL and CFDA have partnered once again to produce a collection of 50 designer footballs that go on auction today through Feb.14, at NFL.COM/Auction, in support of the NFL Foundation. In celebration of Super Bowl 50, 50 CFDA members have created their own Bespoke Designer Footballs, including such designers as Nicole Miller, Georgina Chapman, Billy Reid, Lisa Perry, Todd Snyder and Betsey Johnson. The balls all have a gold theme, symbolic of the 50th anniversary of the Super Bowl, but otherwise these football creations reflect the distinctive style of each designer.

“We are absolutely thrilled to continue our work with the CFDA and their amazing roster of designers to showcase that fans can merge their love of fashion and football,” said Rhiannon Madden, NFL Vice President Consumer Products. “The auction of these one-of-a-kind footballs that capture the excitement of Super Bowl 50, and bring each designers individual aesthetic to life, will benefit the NFL foundation.”

The designer balls will be unveiled Jan. 20 at the NFL’s offices in New York, and displayed in San Francisco in the week leading up to Super Bowl 50 on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016. The footballs will be featured in NFL Shop at Super Bowl, NFL Experience and On The Fifty, the Super Bowl 50 restaurant, among other NFL events around Levi’s Stadium in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The NFL Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of those touched by the game of football. Through its grant programs, the Foundation supports youth and high school football programs, health and safety efforts such as Heads Up Football, and community health initiatives, including NFL PLAY 60.

Don’t miss the chance to own or at least check out these couture footballs, whose beauty is more than pig-skin deep!

Keep Calm & Meditate On

THE DEN

While you might consider meditation a discipline for only the deeply spiritual or those still stuck in the 70’s, it is now one of the hottest new wellness trends. Meditation studios have been popping up all over the country, many designed with the modern feel of a boutique fitness or yoga studio, and with a variety of class options. Chic, contemporary, and very zen, these drop-in studios offer a new spin on traditional meditation practices.

Tal Rabinowitz, founder and owner of LA’s newest drop-in meditation studio The DEN, started penciling meditation into her daily schedule as an NBC executive. She and several colleagues would try to block off time in their busy days to reflect and unwind. But she wasn’t satisfied, saying, “Sometimes it’s hard on your own. I wanted something better and something regular, before work or after work, kind of like exercise classes.”

That’s when she came up with The DEN. Rabinowitz’s studio is a beautifully designed multi-use space which she says embodies “exactly who I am.” She and her clients can not only take a class, but also lounge, relax and read with a cup of tea. The DEN is unique because of its variety of offerings and evoked feelings of “home.”

While the aesthetics may have changed, the benefits of meditation remain the same, and are perhaps more important than ever. Meditation is proven to reduce tension and anxiety; improve mood and focus; and boost energy and creativity. In this digital era in which we are always connected to the outside, meditation provides an opportunity to unplug and re-focus on the inside. Says Rabinowitz, “We’re all just craving a moment of balance.”

From NYC to LA, here are the new meditation studios that have got even the busiest learning to check out to check in:

MNDFL NYC

MNDFL

MNDFL is located in NYC with locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn. MNDFL’s inventors, spiritual blogger Ellie Burrows and The Buddha Walks Into A Bar author Lodro Rinzler, dreamed of a non-traditional, non-religious space to meditate. The modern studio at MNDFL features exposed brick walls, large greenery and neutral-colored plush cushions. MNDFL offers drop in classes for 30 or 45 minutes of modern guided meditation. When you book your cushion, you chose from a “menu” of meditations catered to your mood or current state; for example, there is MNDFL Breath for relaxation, MNDFL Mamas for expecting mothers, or MNDFL Sleep for insomniacs. When classes aren’t taking place, the studio is open to the public for self-guided practice. 10 East 8th St, New York, NY. Photograph: Stephen Wilson

Unplug Meditation Center

UNPLUG

Founded by Suze Yalof Schwartz, former executive fashion editor at Glamour magazine, LA-based UNPLUG was the first of its kind as a chic, boutique meditation studio. Clients can “drop-in” for 30 or 45-minute guided meditation classes, a format that the The New York Times described as “a Drybar for meditation” UNPLUG’s minimalist aesthetics make it a peaceful and uncluttered place to unwind. The classes focus on mindfulness, breath work, and imagination, and the “drop-in” style allows people to investigate the practice of meditation. UNPLUG offers crafted unique meditation programs for kids and corporate groups, too. 12401 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, Ca.

NIKE “BIKETOWN” BIKE DESIGN FOR THE CITY OF PORTLAND BIKE SHARE PROGRAM

For more than 40 years, Nike has called the greater area of Portland, Oregon home, and made the city synonymous with the brand. Thus it is no surprise that when the City of Portland, including the Portland Bureau of Transportation, decided to launch a bike sharing program, they would do so in partnership with Nike.

Nike is the sole sponsor of the City of Portland Bike Share Program called BIKETOWN, which includes $10 million over five years. When the Portland City Council voted unanimously to create Portland Bike Share last September, it authorized a system with 600 bikes. With Nike as title sponsor, the system will now launch with 1000 bikes. Additionally, Nike is contributing designs for BIKETOWN’s stations, the visual bike identity and digital branding.

“We’re proud of our long history of partnership with the City of Portland and believe that the BIKETOWN bike share program is one more example of how we can work together to help make Portland an even more active, vibrant and innovative community – goals Nike and the City of Portland share,” said Nike Vice President of Global Community Impact Jorge Casimiro.
