Girl, 17, Cycles Across U.S. in 3 Weeks

RUTH ORKIN IN 1947; THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT PHOTOGRAPHED BY ORKIN IN 1939

In 1939, a 17-year old girl living in California decided to embark on a monumental bike trip across the country. The World’s Fair in New York City was her destination. That girl was award winning photojournalist and filmmaker Ruth Orkin (1921-1985).

Orkin grew up in Hollywood in the 1920s and 1930s, and at the age of 10, received her first camera, a 39¢ Univex. She began by photographing her friends and teachers at school. Obsessed with traveling after three cross country train trips with her family, she took a job as a teenager at a travel agency in 1937. When a pamphlet for American Youth Hostels arrived in the mail one day at work, offering cheap lodging and cooking facilities for travelers journeying by foot or bicycle, the call for adventure was too great to resist.

At 16, Orkin took her first Youth Hostel trip to San Francisco, and the following year somehow convinced her parents to let her bicycle across the country. Multiple newspapers carried the story of this 17-year old on a cross country tour of U.S. Youth Hostels. While she had actually hitchhiked from LA to Chicago, and then Chicago to New York – equally adventurous and kind of crazy — Orkin later wrote in her book, A Photo Journal, published in 1981, “The bicycling was done while I was sightseeing in each city: Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and Boston. I also biked the smaller distances between the four eastern cities and while hosteling through four New England states. All in all I biked a total of 2000 miles during those four months!”

Luxe Fitness Boutique Bandier Is Pumped For More

large-header-1 copy

This story originally appeared on one of our favorite websites, WELL+GOOD, the go-to-guide for all things health, fitness, and wellness!

Apparently, the supply of $145 mesh panel leggings and $75 floral sports bralettes has no end in sight. BANDIER, the fitness fashion boutique that stocks a wide array of luxe workout brands with locations in Southampton and Manhattan, plus a large e-commerce site, just announced three new stores in Manhasset, Dallas, and New York City’s Fifth Avenue.

“There’s definitely a huge demand for activewear in all of these places,” says founder Jennifer Bandier, who turned her passion for fitness (and role as a former music exec for bands like TLC) into a multi-brand activewear concept, where brands like Stella McCartney and K. Deer mingle on racks with Michi and Prismsport. “People are coming in and don’t want to wear one brand from head-to-toe, just like normal apparel. They like that they can come in to our store and mix-and-match curated fitness fashion pieces,” she says.

On October 21, Bandier’s Manhasset store will join Louis Vuitton and Chanel at The Americana Manhasset, which will cater to women on Long Island and its growing boutique fitness scene. The Dallas store, opening on November 6, will also open in luxury retail shopping center, Highland Park Village, making it the first Bandier boutique outside of New York. Something founder Bandier hints could be replicated again in 2016.

New York City Marathon: The Great Race

“THE NEW YORK CITY MARATHON: THE GREAT RACE” AT THE MUSEUM OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK

Now on view at The Museum of the City of New York is “The New York City Marathon: The Great Race”, the first ever exhibition to chart and celebrate the history of this epic race. From its humble beginnings in 1970, when a mere 127 participants ran 4 laps around Central Park, to its current 50,000 plus participants on a 26.2 mile course that winds through the five boroughs of New York City, the marathon is one of the city’s annual highlights for both runners and spectators alike. More than one million people line the streets to cheer these runners on, and are an integral part of the tapestry that makes this event so special.

“The Great Race” brings the marathon to life, telling its fascinating history as both a test of athletic endurance and inspiring example of civic pride and community spirit. An illustrated timeline documents its history along one wall, while at the heart of the exhibition are works by both amateur and professional photographers who responded to the Museum’s open call for images. From several thousand entries, a jury selected 120 photographs of the many sights seen along the 26.2 mile course, captured on devices ranging from cell phones to state of the art digital cameras. The show also features historic video footage of famous finishes, along with lifesize cutouts and profiles of key figures like Grete Waitz, Fred Lebow, and Bill Rogers, perfect for posing with for selfies!

CALL FOR ENTRIES: A SELECTION OF IMAGES FROM THE EXHIBITION

On a personal note, I am proud to say the exhibition is dedicated to my father, James A. Lebenthal, a long time trustee of The Museum of the City of New York and lifelong New Yorker, who was as passionate about the marathon as the city it celebrates. Though he never ran it himself, all three of his kids have mutiple times. For this runner’s view of last year’s race check out the 26.2 Miles of the New York City Marathon. My father passed away about a year ago, and initial funding of the exhibition was made possible by the many donations given to the Museum in his memory.

“The New York City Marathon: The Great Race” opened on Tuesday, October 20, 2015, just prior to the running of the 45th marathon on Sunday, November 1, and will be on view through March 8, 2016. The exhibition is being co-presented with New York Road Runners, the organizers of the TCS New York City Marathon, and the world’s premier community running organization.

Pucci Gets Decked Out

EMILIO PUCCI STREET AND CRUISER SKATEBOARDS

Sport and fashion have collided in a kaleidoscopic collection of Emilio Pucci skateboards, decked out with seven unmistakeably distinctive prints. The Italian fashion house challenged Swiss art and design students at University of ECAL in Lausanne to rethink Pucci’s classic aesthetics, and these vibrant skateboards are the result. Called “Dolce Vita”, this limited edition series features a playful mix of colors and patterns like ice cream cones, pasta shapes, high heels, diamonds, and other symbols of Italian culture.

There are two styles of skateboards, available in seven patterns and accented by colorful wheels. The Street model is a pro style skateboard designed for street and skate park tricks, and the Cruiser, with larger softer wheels, is for everyday recreational riding. All the Pucci boards are crafted with hand-selected hardwood and printed for optimum photo quality, scratch resistance, and durability.

Pucci teamed up with Nowness and director Edward Housden to create a short film, “Rolling with Emilio Pucci” which debuts the skateboard series. The five-minute film features model Martha-Rose Redding, sporting a silk crèpe di chine dress from the 2016 Pilot Resort Collection. She rides the Cruiser Shape as two boys rival her on the Street Shape. Without saying a word, the film articulates the chic and versatile style of the Pucci boards.

The boards are available for €370 (or roughly $420) exclusively at emiliopucci.com while quantities last. Designed for both skaters and fashionistas alike, better get on board fast before they all skate away!

Being Evel

EVEL KNIEVEL IN THE SKYCYCLE X-2 FROM “BEING EVEL”

Long before the “X-Games”, and action sports superstars like skateboarder Tony Hawk and snowboarder Shaun White were household names, there was “Evel” Knievel – a larger than life daredevil who captivated America with his motorcycle feats in the 1970’s. His jumps over multiple line-ups of cars, vans, and buses were infamous, and television rating bonanzas in an era when there were only three stations to watch. In a new documentary released earlier this year, “Being Evel”, we get an entertaining and inside look at the life and times the original “extreme athlete”. Says one of the film’s producers and narrator, Johnny Knoxville, of MTV’s “Jackass” fame, “I didn’t think of him as a daredevil, I thought of him as a superhero.”

The film traces the career of Robert Craig “Evel” Knievel from an insurance salesman some describe as a hustler, to a mega sports entertainer, with action packed archival footage and interviews with family members and those who worked with him along the way. In the era of ABC Wide World of Sports, America was glued to their TV sets each time he jumped, and out of the 10 most watched episodes of the show, Knievel’s jumps are 7 of the most popular. While most motorcycle riders wore black, his red, white, and blue star spangled leather suit and cape made him an American hero.

CAESARS PALACE JUMP AND CRASH

Knievel was legendary as much for his bone breaking crashes as his successful landings, and it was the footage of him crashing after his notorious jump over the fountains at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in 1967, his body bouncing and flip-flopping for 60 yards, that made him most famous. He became national news that day, and lucrative sponsorship and licensing deals followed in an era before that was how athletes got rich. Says Knievel in the film, “Nobody wants to see me die, but they don’t want to miss it if I do.”

Knievel is descibed as insatiable, constantly seeking bigger jumps, more money, and despite being married with a family, more women. The film follows the arc of his career that like his jumps, most notably the Snake River Canyon, went up and came down. The build up to what was truly a crazy stunt was impossible to ignore. Billed as the “death defying stunt of the century”, it was watched by more 2 million people on Pay-Per-View and closed circuit television, but seemed destined to fail from the start. The Skycycle X-2, a steam rocket motorcycle descibed by some a tin can, was to launch Knievel over the mile wide canyon with G Forces of 350 mph, yet Knievel had no training, no parachute experience, and on two test runs the Skycycle crashed into the river. Says Geraldo Rivera, who interviewed him before the jump, “It was the kind of stunt where you would see a guy kill himself. It was so audacious. It was so daring. It was so almost impossible in many ways but for his confidence”.

Being_Evel_still

Rigged with a parachute that deployed early on the takeoff, the jump fizzled and Skycycle dropped slowly into river. Knievel emerged unhurt, but so began his descent both literally and figuratively. He had become belligerent towards the media, who tore him up and it was widely questioned whether this was really a mechanical failure or the “Great Rip-Off of 1974”. He would continue to jump however, taking his act to London’s Wembley Stadium, and finally retiring after his longest jump of 14 Greyhound buses at Kings Island theme park in Ohio in 1975. But it was his maddest act of beating his former press secretary with a baseball bat, after the book he had authorized him to write was published, that brought about his ultimate decline. Sentenced to three years’ probation and six months in county jail, while publicly flaunting his brief incarceration, all sponsorship deals were revoked – cars, houses, money gone. Knievel was eventually forced to declare bankruptcy.

Evel Knievel died in 2007, and despite his ending is still considered an American icon.  For those of us who grew up in the 70’s and remember these televised jumps well, “Being Evel” is a fun look back and interesting view of how the phenomenon that was Evel Knievel all got started. Nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, “Being Evel” is now available on Amazon Video.
